Look at your home through the eyes of a burglar. If you can get in without keys then so can a burglar. No forced entry is used in approximately one in four burglaries.

• Always secure your doors and windows whenever possible. • Outside lighting will make your home less appealing to burglars

and draw attention to anyone breaking in. • In your absence from home give the impression that it is

occupied by using timer switches on internal lights and perhaps leaving a radio on.

• Check any security you have has passed attack test standards. There are a range of doors, windows, locks and other security items that are available. Seek the advice of your local Crime Reduction Offi cer.

• Review your security at least every 12 months. Does it need updating? Are you complying with basic crime reduction advice?

Garden Wise

Burglary of garden sheds and theft of garden equipment is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. Your garden furniture and tools are very saleable items so you must make it as diffi cult as possible for any would be thief to get to your property.

• Good locks should be fi tted to shed doors and windows, always use them.

• Purchase a shed/garage alarm – available at most DIY stores.• Postcode your property with either an ultra violet pen, permanent

marker or by scratching on the details. • Remember to lock all doors and windows when out in the

garden, do not make it easy for sneak in thieves. • Detail any particular identifi cation marks on your property

including damage marks. • Equipment should never be left unattended.

• Expensive or unusual items of equipment or garden ornaments should be photographed.

• Walls, fences and gates should always be kept in good condition. • Illuminate dark areas of your garden where possible. • Screens for thieves to work behind should be avoided, keep

hedges, shrubs and large plants cut back.• Plant bushes with thorns, especially under windows.• Gravel pathways or gravel under windows prevent a silent

approach.• Neighbourhood Watch would be very benefi cial, why not join

one in your area or set one up if one doesn’t already exist.

Holidays

As we are approaching the main holiday periods it is worth remembering that the local Neighbourhood Policing Team has initiated a Temporary Unoccupied Scheme (TUH).

• All you need to do is to complete a form which is available by calling into Eccleshill police station, emailing or visiting the Neighbourhood Policing website (details below).

• We will, whenever possible, visit your home whilst you are away to check all is in order.

Nursery pupils at Fulneck School in Leeds have celebrated Mini Pots of Care Day by decorating plant pots and tending to daffodils in the School’s Sensory Garden.

On Monday 7th March pupils at Lambs’ Hill Nursery, at Fulneck School, were joined by Ann Hodgson, West Yorkshire Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care, to celebrate Mini Pots for Care day.

Mini Pots of Care were distributed to the school last autumn, and the children were encouraged to plant a daffodil bulb each and tend to the plants throughout winter, ready for them to bloom in spring.

Sue Hodgson, Nursery Manager at Lambs’ Hill, said: “After opening our Sensory Garden last year the nursery pupils have shown a keen interest in planting and growing and the Mini Pots of Care campaign has taught the children how to care for a plant, much like a nurse cares for sick people.”

The Mini Pots of Care Day also helped kick off Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Great Daffodil Appeal 2011. Every March the charity encourages everyone in the UK to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin in support of Marie Curie Nurses. All money raised will allow Marie Curie nurses to provide more free care to people with a terminal illness in their own homes and the charity’s hospices.

Ann Hodgson said: “It was lovely to see the children enjoying looking after their daffodils. The Mini Pots of Care campaign provides both

fun and educational activities for the children, while also raising money for Marie Curie nurses.

“We are extremely grateful to Fulneck School for taking part in the Mini Pots of Care campaign, and their fundraising has been a great start to the Great Daffodil Appeal 2011.”

David Goulbourn, Headmaster of Fulneck Junior School, said: “At Fulneck Junior School we aim to support fundraising events throughout the year as they are both fun and educational for the pupils, while also teaching them to care for others.

“The outstanding result in the latest Inspection Report for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) has shown that Fulneck School provides a fantastic learning environment for its Nursery pupils. The staff are committed to meeting every child’s individual needs, which results in outstanding levels of achievement at this stage.”

To fi nd out more about Fulneck School, visit www.fulneckschool.co.uk or contact the Marketing Manager, Susanna Domeniconi on 0113 257 0235.

Was the expression used by Richard Greenwood, local franchise owner of Ovenu, the UK’s premier oven valeting service. Bookings this year are showing a remarkable growth of around 50% on the corresponding period of 2010 and Richard puts this down to last year’s “new crop” of delighted clients now returning to the fold to have their annual spring clean.

There is no doubt that the warmer, longer days of early spring affect people in a positive way and the “valeting” of ovens, as Ovenu prefers to call it, has a particularly strong demand after the long winter we have just endured. The most loathed household chore is “music to the ears” of the highly trained, highly professional team of oven valeting technicians, setting about to restore the dirtiest ovens to a pristine level of cleanliness. The beauty of our service, Richard says, is that the householder just does not have the equipment nor the expertise to emulate our standards of cleanliness and whilst most fi rst timers to the service are keen to be given an assurance of value-for-money, their fears are soon allayed once the job is completed. One of the really good aspects of dealing with Ovenu is that the company website (www.ovenu.co.uk) has a short video which illustrates the cleaning process and that, coupled with the hundreds of testimonials from clients, is proving a very useful and persuasive tool.

The client base, Richard explains, is quite varied although the typical client tends to be the retired person who perhaps no longer has the energy, mobility or resolve  to clean their own oven. Or people with young families who don’t have much time on their hands. Or again people who want to use their leisure time in better ways than tackling their dirty ovens.

A large proportion of Richard’s team is family related with all of them living in the locality. People still like to feel they are dealing with local businesses and local people and whilst the team covers all of West Yorkshire, the main emphasis is to service the local need.

The business should see around 2500 ovens being cleaned this year but the forecast is to double this fi gure within the next two to three years on the basis that the majority of all new clients will re-book within a twelve to eighteen months period. “Interesting times “ Indeed!

This annual event will this year take place on

Saturday, May 10, from Elmwood Hotel in the

village. The walk of around seven miles has been

sponsored by the Calverley Rotary Club and will

start at 11am.

Walkers will be following a route dating back

to the Middle Ages to raise funds for the four

care homes in the village of Calverley: Champion

House, St Luke’s, 16A and B Salisbury Street and

Brookleigh Sheltered Home.

Organisers of Calverley’s annual Millennium Walk,

are inviting people to join them on their tenth

seven-mile stroll around the village boundaries, the

walk was originally called ‘Beating the Bounds’.

Organiser David Williams comments, “The aim of

the yearly walk besides bringing the community

closer together is to raise funds for the village’s

four care homes.

Each of the homes has an ongoing project or

area where the monies raised helps to assist their

efforts”, said Mr Williams.

He added: “Everyone is welcome. Please come and

support and let’s have a great day.”

Sponsorship forms are available from shops and

the library, or a donation can be made on the day.

Champion House, a converted, extended stone

built property, provides care for people with

physical disabilities. Care is provided on two fl oors

in singly occupied rooms, some of which are very

spacious. The third fl oor of the home is used as a

training area for staff. Each person has their own

private room decorated to their own personal

taste, and is provided with all necessary aids and

adaptations to suit their individual requirements.

Calverley is a very close knit, caring and supportive

community and sincere thanks go to all Calverley

residents who support these worthy causes

through the Millenium Walk.

Riverford offers organic Fairtrade pineapple to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight

Organic vegbox company Riverford were offering customers organic Fairtrade pineapple to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight (28 February-13 March 2011). As well as providing something exotic and tasty for its customers, this will make a real difference to the lives of the African growers.

The pineapple, from Togo in West Africa, is grown by a group of farmers who are paid a fair wage and given a guaranteed market for their produce. This helps the farmers; boosting their income and getting their children back into local schools.

“We believe in treating our growers and suppliers fairly, whether they are in the UK or

overseas,” says Andrew Wilson, who delivers Riverford boxes in the West Yorkshire Area area. “We’re very excited about selling this pineapple; it’s incredibly sweet and has zero air miles, as we never air freight any of our produce. By buying it, you can make a real difference to the lives of the African growers and their families.”

Riverford also offers organic Fairtrade bananas alongside its vegboxes. The bananas are grown by a group of farmers in the Dominican Republic.

To see Riverford founder Guy Watson’s trip to visit the pineapple growers in Togo, see www.riverford.co.uk/about_us/fair_trade

Champion House is part of the Leonard Cheshire

Disability, which is the leading charity provider of

services for disabled people in the UK.

All our fundraising projects are funded by the

involvement of our local community and Champion

House’s support group. Our Annual Garden fete is

our main fundraising event of the year. Last Year

we raised a staggering £7500.

This year we are holding our garden fete on

Saturday the 11th June 2011 at 2pm.

The money fundraised this year will go towards a

sensory garden for our residents. By raising money

for projects like this it can enhance somebody’s

quality of life tremendously.

We will be selling garden fete tickets at the local

supermarkets over the next few weeks. There are

lots of prizes to win including £100 cash.

There are many stalls and attractions including,

Bouncy Castle Jousting pole, Splat the Rat, An

Assault Course, children’s corner, Face Painting,

Dancers, Plant Stall, Cake Stall, Cream Teas, BBQ

and much more

We have a wonderful day every year, but this

cannot be possible without the support and

generosity from our local businesses and the

community.
