T he Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club, is thrilled to announce the 2011 “Citizens of the Year”, Loren and Craig DeRoy. The DeRoys will be honored for their philanthropic work at a gala dinner on Friday, October 21 at Trump National Golf Club. Long-time Peninsula residents, the DeRoys have been involved in numerous nonprofit organizations both here and abroad. Currently President of the Board of Trustees for the Palos Verdes Art Center, Loren’s support of the Art Center includes writing an award winning curriculum for Art at Your Fingertips, soliciting grants and developing an arts-based therapeutic program for local hospitals. Loren is equally supportive of land conservancy and sustainability issues. Her work with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy spans more than a decade. Several of the key projects she has spearheaded include the development of the White Point Nature Preserve and the transformation of the former Nike Missile site into a public park and nature preserve. As co-founder of the Visual Arts Booster Club at Peninsula High School, Loren has provided a platform for fine arts education at the secondary school level. She has also served on local government commissions, for both Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates. As a businessman, entrepreneur and attorney, Craig is a leader in worldwide initiatives focusing on securing land rights for the poor and improving financial literacy. His involvement with the Clinton Global Initiative led to the founding of Medeem US and Medeem Ghana Ltd., social impact enterprises committed to bringing legal empowerment to the world’s poor, through programs to formalize and document land rights. In addition to published articles, Craig’s photographs have appeared in several children’s books. Tying together their focus on global land rights with their commitment to the local community, the DeRoys recently established the Medeem Institute at Marymount College in Rancho Palos Verdes. This exciting partnership expands research, field work and service opportunities for Marymount students and faculty in Global Studies, Business and other programs at the college. “The Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Club is pleased to partner with the Chamber of Commerce to honor Loren and Craig as “Citizens of the Year,” said David Rowe, President of the PVP Rotary Club. “Their leadership and work in the philanthropic arena is an inspiration to our community.” For information regarding the Citizen of the Year event (including tickets, tribute book ads and silent auction donations), please contact the Chamber at 310-377-8111 or debby@ palosverdeschamber.com Griswold & Griswold Insurance Agency, Inc. A Tradition of Community Dedication G riswold & Griswold Insurance was founded in 1948 by Earl “Bill” Griswold. Originally located in downtown Los Angeles, his business focused on providing physicians with life, disability and health policies. In 1987, it relocated to the suburbs and is now at 25550 Hawthorne Blvd., Ste. 200 Torrance, CA 90505. Bill, with his wife Keiko, were heavily involved in their community and were loyal attendees of Torrance Memorial’s Holiday Festival, Providence Little Company of Mary’s fundraisers and Cancer Support Community’s gala, to name a few. In 2002, Bill and Keiko’s son Steven joined the agency and expanded the portfolio of products to include property and casualty lines. Sadly, Bill passed away in 2006, leaving the company reins in Steven’s capable hands. He continues to expand and innovate the business to give more value-added benefits to their clients. Griswold & Griswold continues its dedication to their community by its unfaltering support of the programs and organizations that mean the most to our clients. “We are very happy to be able to support the work of the Chamber because of the hard work and dedication they put in to supporting local businesses,” said Steven Griswold, Vice President. Local First! Why is it so important to do business locally? In these challenging economic times,

community becomes increasingly more important. Supporting our local businesses serves to strengthen all aspects of our community. Many local business owners are also local residents with a sincere interest in the well-being of the community. Supporting local businesses is supporting your neighbors. Local business success benefits the community on so many levels. Supporting local business gives these businesses the opportunity and means to invest in local

non-profits—local non-profits in turn support children’s programs, educational programs and municipal activities. Local business success also results in local jobs—local jobs provide more money to invest in local business success—the circle continues and we all benefit! Doing business locally saves you money on gas—save gas, keep the environment green and keep YOUR green so you can then Bank Local! The list goes on and on! We all win when we go local first, so be a good neighbor and support your community—Go Local First!
