Out of respect to renew our covenant to God and each other as United Methodists, we again offer ourselves to the greater good of Christ. We resolve, at this season, to affirm that the Bishop and Cabinet will discern how pastors are deployed for the best possible missional configuration in the East Ohio Conference, of which we are a part. It is our hope to serve this movement to help support our pastor to lead in equipping the laity reach out and “to make and mature disciples for the transformation of the world”, in this one United Methodist Church with many mission outposts.

EAST OHIO CONFERENCE AVERAGE WORSHIP ATTENDANCE REPORTING

EXPLANATION AND GUIDELINES

As we think about how congregations are to report average worship attendance in this day and age when individuals do not have to be physically present in a congregation to take part in a worship service, let’s begin by taking a moment to explore what we mean by worship. In discussing this matter the Florida Annual Conference concluded, “The well-spring of a congregation's life together is their worship. Christ calls us out of the world to gather around Him as passionate worshipers. We gather with attitudes of trust and gratitude, of openness and obedience. We gather to be formed as God's people through praise, prayer, Word and Sacrament. While it is impossible to measure a worshiper's openness to the Holy Spirit, we can assume that those encountering the Living Water tend to come back.” Therefore, the best measurement for Passionate worship is: The average number of people in attendance at regularly scheduled worship service(s).

In The East Ohio Conference, we affirm the following regarding worship:

● Worship is scheduled for twelve months of the year and the attendance at each service is included inthe average worship attendance figure.

● Worship includes the regular celebration of the sacraments. Our hope is that communion would becelebrated at least 4 times a year.

● Regularly scheduled worship services include any service held on a consistent basis as an opportunityfor worship. In many congregations this will be the Sunday morning service(s).

● Congregations might also offer a Sunday evening service, a youth worship service, a Saturday eveningor mid-week service. These are examples of other worship opportunities that should be included inaverage worship attendance.

● If a nursing home or care facility service meets the above definition for worship i.e. regularlyscheduled throughout the year, and the celebration of sacraments, it should be included in theaverage worship attendance.

● Children who participate in all or part of any such service may be included in the count. This wouldinclude children who participate in a children's church service especially designed for them. This wouldnot include infants in the nursery who do not attend a worship service.

What is not included in average worship attendance:

● Based on the instructions found for line 7 of the End of the Year Report, average worship attendancedoes not include attendance at irregularly held worship services, such as a Holy Thursday, ChristmasEve Service, weddings or funerals.

● The End of the Year Report also asks congregations to keep track of and report the number of personswho attend worship online (7a). This means reporting the “average number of unique viewers whoaccess worship online. This includes those live streaming your worship service and views/downloads ofrecorded worship services (audio or video), sermons, and/or podcasts.” This number does not include“generic hits/visits to your website” or people who receive and read a sermon after receiving it bysnailmail.

● Do not include weekends when worship services are cancelled in your average worship attendance. For example, if worship services have to be cancelled on a Sunday morning during the winter becauseof the weather, you would not include the attendance for those worship services when you calculatethe average worship attendance at the end of the year.

❖ We suggest churches track the average worship attendance for each worship service that meets the above

definition as a way to better understand how they are engaging people through worship.
