TASK 5:LOCAL AGENDA 21
You are given a task by the mayor of your hometown to evaluate and give suggestion on how
to plan the town in accordance with Local Agenda 21. Write a brief report on your evaluation
and suggestion.
A Local Agenda 21 is the strategy and action programme for implementing sustainable
development at a local level. The Local Agenda 21 should be developed in close liaison with
local communities and organisations.
Sustainable development is based on the idea that the quality of people’s lives, and the state of
our communities, is affected by a combination of economic, social and environmental
factors. Aberdeen City Council published its Local Agenda 21 Strategy in 2000, and it forms part
of our Community Plan.
As given task by the mayor of my hometown to evaluate and give suggestions on how to plan the
town in accordance with Local Agenda 21,I will set a clear set of actions that should be taken to
ensure sustainable development at local authority level. They cover:
1. Governance
• Promoting effective arrangements and mechanisms that integrate in a balanced manner
the three dimensions of sustainable development which accounts economic, social and
environment.
• Ensuring coherence and consistency in policy formulation and implementation.
• Promoting transparency and effective involvement of all relevant parts of government
and of civil society in decision-making.
• Strengthening institutional mechanisms dealing with policy formulation, coordination,
implementation and review as well as reinforcing inter-linkages among these
mechanisms.
2. Local Management towards sustainability
• Provide cycle lane to promote active transport usage
• Install Rainharvesting System for new houses
• Have more recycling centres which is near and accessible by all the living community
• Proper schedule of waste collection and dump the solid waste at sanitary landfill
3. Natural common goods
• Reduce the dependence on importing good from other states or countries instead produce
own food supplies for the community to shorten the cycles; Promote Vertical Farming
4. Responsible consumption and lifestyle choices
• Awareness campaigns to change the mindset of the people in making a more sustainable
choices of lifestyle
• Eat more vegetables
• Reduce energy and water usage
• Reduce Air Travel
• Zero-waste
5. Planning and design
• Compact City- is an urban planning and urban design concept, which promotes relatively
high residential density with mixed land uses. It is based on an efficient public transport
system and has an urban layout which – according to its advocates – encourages walking
and cycling, low energy consumption and reduced pollution
• Mixed design-Mixed-use community within 600 m walking distance of core commercial
areas and rapid transit stop
• Polycentric design-disperse from the centre of concentration
Design house with much more reduced size and lighting ,natural ventilation, heat
insulation,smaller staircase
Porous Car Park and Swale to allow natural diversion of rainwater which flows into river
6. Better mobility, less traffic
• Pedestrian Walkway
• Improve public transport in terms of efficiency, punctuality, user friendly and covers
awider network
• Provide cycle lane
7. Local Action for health
• Provide good services of health centres
8. Vibrant and sustainable local economy
• Short Cycles:More efficient local use of natural resources to have greater local economy
autonomy by lessening importing which reduce transportation
9. Social equity and justice
• Provide more green space areas
• Bicycles service
