President’s Message Dear LNRWF Members, First, I want to thank all of you that attended our first club luncheon meeting at San Juan Hills Golf Club on March 27. The Board and I received feedback that the food was delicious and the service was excellent, so I hope more of you will attend in the future. In addition, it is a lovely venue with the golf course, gardens and a waterfall just steps away from our meeting room. I would also like to thank guest Councilperson Steve Dicterow for attending and updating us on what is happening in Laguna Beach city politics. Finally, I extend a special “thank you” to our club’s 1st Vice President-Program Chair Jennifer Sterling for arranging such a moving presentation by guest speaker and human trafficking survivor Shari Ho. You can learn more about Shari and her story at www.ShariHo.com.

At our upcoming April 24 luncheon, our meeting topic will be featuring the 2nd Amendment of the United States Bill of Rights (ratified in 1791, declaring the right to keep and bear arms) and how to protect it. This is a meeting you will want to ask your firearm enthusiast friends (male and female) to attend, as well as those acquaintances who want to understand more about our rights as citizens and responsible firearm ownership. We will have speakers from the California Rifle and Pistol Association and local Laguna Niguel business On Target Shooting Range, as well as self-defense merchandise from Damsels in Defense. As always, you can find a reservation form for this luncheon event on our website lnwrf.org and included with this newsletter.

Don’t forget our Education Scholarship fundraising event at Salt Creek Wine Company at Towne Center on Sunday June 23 from 4-6pm. Any donations to this event are welcomed. Reservation forms and tickets can be purchased on our website lnrwf.org. Just click on Our Meetings/Calendar of Events.

Thanks again for your continued support for our club and for Republican causes.

Sherry Astrella President

“This is an urgent humanitarian issue. My administration is committed to leveraging every resource we have to confront this threat, to support victims and survivors and to hold [human] traffickers accountable for their heinous crimes.” - President Donald Trump

Membership Report Happy Spring, LNRWF Members!

The CFRW Spring Board of Directors Conference is being held in our backyard this year. The conference is May 31, June 1 and June 2 at the Hilton Doubletree in Santa Ana across from John Wayne Airport. If you have never been to a CFRW conference, this is a great opportunity to join our Republican sisters in a supportive and enthusiastic environment. You will make new friends and begin preparation for the 2020 elections. The more knowledge we possess, the better we can make the case for why Republican principles work for all Americans, not just Republicans. Together, let’s learn how to effectively change hearts and minds. You may register on the CFRW website cfrw.org.

As of the end of March, our membership grew to 80 – including 15 new members. 2019 Membership dues were payable on January 1, 2019 and delinquent on March 31. We all live very busy lives and this may have been overlooked. I am contacting members this month to renew their dues. We have provided three ways to update your membership:

1) Apply online at LNRWF.org.

2) You may mail a check for $30 to LNRWF, P.O. Box 6532, Laguna Niguel, CA 92607.

3) You may call me directly at 949 800-9153, and I can process your credit card number and membership for you.

Enjoy the spring!

Thank you,

Nancy Meade Cotton VP Membership

Ticket prices are $39 We have sponsorships available starting at $100 which include the price of one ticket with proceeds going directly to the scholarship fund. Some of you also have relationships/connections to businesses that would be willing to donate “packages” such as golf outings, boat excursions, fine jewelry, wine tours, mini-getaways to anywhere, airline tickets, gun range memberships, gardening baskets, spa and pampering packages, etc., - you get the idea. Most of us do a lot of networking and know someone, somewhere who is willing to donate, if we just ask. Remember ladies, this is for our scholarship fund, and our goal is to help ease our young Republican students’ scholastic expenses. Help us help them.

REPUBLICAN CONVERSATION POINTS Allison Olson, CFRW Advocate

NEW CONTACT NUMBER Our Advocate's Office has a new phone number! If you need to reach Allison Olson or have a general inquiry, please make note of her new office number: (925) 285-6514. The old office number is no longer in service. Thank you! YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED! FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR HERE These bills are being heard Tuesday, April 9th, so CALL YOUR LEGISLATOR (if they sit on the indicated committees) on MONDAY, April 8 to MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD! AB 1571 (Kiley, R) Free Speech on Campus Act - SUPPORT AB 1571 is being heard in the Assembly Higher Education Committee. As we mentioned last week in the Capitol Update, even needing a bill that strengthens the First Amendment in our state is concerning. AB 1571 would protect the free speech of our College Republicans, when they bring conservative speakers to their campuses. All Assemblyman Kiley is asking is that our College Republicans are afforded the same rights and privileges as every other student on our state community college campuses, CSUs, and UCs, when asserting their freedom of expression. This bill was killed in committee last legislative session- why would the liberal Democrats in Sacramento want to suppress free speech on our campuses? It's because it's speech they don't agree with. Our state needs to recognize that all speech should be protected on our campuses, unless it incites violence. SUPPORT AB 1571! Assembly Higher Education Committee AB 392 (Weber, D) Police Use of Force - OPPOSE AB 392 will change one word in the law, but would have vast repercussions for our law enforcement officers. Currently, regarding the use of force for police officers, the law states that a reasonable use of force is allowable in the apprehension of a suspect. This bill would change the word "reasonable" to "necessary", making it more difficult for our officers to do their job. This not only would make the officers themselves less safe because they may be second-guessing their decisions, but that, in turn, would make our communities less safe. No law enforcement agency in the state supports this bill, as it directly affects how they do their jobs. Assemblywoman Weber should pull the bill and allow SB 230 (Cabarello, D) to move forward, which has some support from policing agencies. Furthermore, this bill will be voted on by the Assembly on the floor after it passes, circumventing a fiscal committee where more review and public opinion could take place. The Assembly Democrats want to railroad this bill through. We support our law enforcement agencies and we care about their safety and the safety of our communities. Ask your legislator to VOTE NO on AB 392! AB 392 will be heard in the Assembly Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, April 9th. OPPOSE AB 392! Assembly Public Safety Committee AB 138 (Bloom, D) and AB 766 (Chui, D) Soda Tax and Soda Ban - OPPOSE Enough with the nanny-state, the ‘government knows better than you, sugar is bad and you're fat’ bills. Both AB 138 and AB 766 take aim at soda. AB 138 proposes a 2-cent tax per ounce of soda sold. Apparently, the legislature thinks you can't control your own soda consumption, so they'd like to tax you out of drinking it. This is a regressive tax, which ultimately hurts the poor and working class more than the middle class and much more than liberal elites in SF and LA who don't drink soda. Similarly, AB 766 will ban soda containers that are larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, gas stations, and mini-marts. Assemblyman Chui is calling it an "unsealed beverage container portion cap", but what is to stop someone from buying three 12 oz cans and downing them in a row? The logic is flawed and so is the bill. Call your legislator and ask them to VOTE NO on both AB 138 and AB 766! The soda ban/tax bills are being heard in the Assembly Health Committee on Tuesday, April 9th. VOTE NO on AB 138 and AB 766! She has shared, “as every true Texan should, I registered as a Republican at an on-campus voter registration event.” While attending Chapman University of Law, where she specialized in Tax law, she worked at two different litigation firms where Stephanie learned “that there are no winners when it comes to litigation.” After opening her own estate planning law firm in 2009, with the motto “Honesty, Integrity and Client Satisfaction”, she is happy to report that she is celebrating her 10th year as a local business owner. It was our own former club President and current Laguna Niguel City Councilperson Sandy Rains who persuaded her to join our club. As our membership secretary, Stephanie works hard on our club’s per capita reports and membership directory. Having served 6 years on the Laguna Niguel’s Traffic and Transportation Commission, she is the new chair of the Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce. We are so fortunate to have Stephanie as an active member of our city and our club!
