Namaste...Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) is a non-religious, non-political, non-governmental and not-for-profit volunteer andinternship organization founded in 2005. We aim to empow-er marginalized communities by implementing integratedand holistic approaches for community development. Wom-en and children are the core focus of the organization. Im-proving the life conditions of women and children is crucialto alleviating poverty in Nepal, as such VIN seeks to addresscommunity issues through four major projects: women’s em-powerment, children’s development, community health and youth empowerment. Educa-tion, health, income and basic infra-structure are the four pillars of our initiatives to empowerthe marginalized and disadvantaged communities in Nepal.

VIN piloted its first project through the

Jitpurphedi Village Development Com-

mittee (VDC). The village is part of the Kathmandu District. Even though it is so close to the

country’s capital, it is a marginalized and shadowed community. Feasibility and preliminary

studies revealed that the education level and the living standards of the people were very

low. There were not any organizations working in the area, so when introduced to VIN the

local community showed an immense interest. VIN therefore chose to focus on this site and

has been working there since the beginning of 2007.

VIN has now extended its working area to Okhaldhunga (Everest region) 250 Km north eastof Kathmandu.

Empowering Marginalized CommunitiesVolunteers Initiative Nepal's (VImission and that of the Long aMid Term Volunteer projects is tempower marginalized communties. In so doing, VIN aims to prvide people with the right tooand knowledge to help theselves. The focus is on helpinwomen and children through specialeducational and community training projects which promote equality, economic well-beingand basic human rights. VIN has adopted an integrated development approach by relying onboth international and local volunteers.

Specific Objectives To help women become self-reliant through a number of initiatives including;

literacy classes, income generation projects, savings, credits groups; and raising awarenesson health, sanitation and the environment.

To support and provide facilities for early childhood development and encourag-

ing a good basic foundation for young children at the start of their education.

To provide a platform for children to par-

ticipate in non-formal creative activities, as wellas developing their life skills and making themaware of their basic rights through the establish-ment of Children's Clubs in schools.

To provide sponsored education to disad-

vantaged children including; orphans, conflictvictim children and children from very poor and disadvantaged families and to help chil-dren who have suffered as a result of the conflict to regain access to education.

To raise awareness of the need for English language skills and to facilitate teaching

English within schools, Buddhist monasteries and nunneries.

To help ensure a quality of education being provided, through conducting teacher

training workshops, seminars and exchange visits.

To provide resources and healthcare professionals to assist the health post which

serves the local community. To raise awareness of the benefits of good sanitation and pro-vide education in personal hygiene. To provide access to basic hygiene facilities like toilets

To offer support in the establishment of a Com-

unity Learning Center (CLC) to provide learninglatforms for eliminating illiteracy and for develop-ng the professional capacity of local people.

Why volunteer with VIN?VIN is one of the few Nepali run organizations currently operating in Nepal whose missionserves to directly empower marginalized people and promote a greater sense of voluteering.Our projects operate year round and international volunteers can feel satisfied by contributingto an organization that is working to improve the quality of life of the Nepali people— with anemphasis on improving education for marginalized groups such as women and children.

THIS MEANS THAT: You will be making a sustainable difference in the most marginalized communities

You’ll take part in structured projects where you will have the opportunity to

contribute, together with VIN's onsite team, in achieving a lasting difference for yourtarget community’s shared vision. Our permanent staff continuously facilitate theprojects even if there are no volunteers. So there is no question on interruption of theprojects.

Project fees (excluding the necessary administrative expenses), will go directly

towards supporting our local projects and activities. There are no large overheads tosupport, or internationally based NGO to which fees are paid. You can be satisfiedknowing that you are directly assisting the local community.

Our dedicated staff is attentive to your needs throughout your volunteering period.

Ongoing support will ensure that volunteers feel not only safe, but comfortable intheir placements and in Nepal in general. Volunteer safety is our major priority.

Our community placement is located in outskirt of Kathmandu valley, Nuwakot and

Okhaldhunga district. Okhaldhunga is 250km north east of Kathmandu in the Everestregion.

THE PROCESSApplication for Placement Booking

Volunteers must apply to our partner organizations in their own country.

Attach your updated resume / curriculum vitae (CV) with two referee contact details(referees can be for your work/university/family);

Await confirmation from VIN for acceptance;

If you wish to work for more than one placement, then you are required to pay €60 ex-tra to cover our added logistical work.

VIN Volunteer / Internship project induction starts on the 1st and 15th of each month.The induction period is considered part of your project period. If you wish tocome in between for a short period, you will receive a basic orientation before theplacement. Please arrive one day prior (e.g. on the 14th if you are starting on the 15th)to the project induction date.

PlacementAfter you receive the confirmation letter from VIN, you will also receive your placement in-formation; project specific information, a host family information sheet, fundraiser TIPS, aproject schedule and other induction information etc. Your placement information sheetwill contain all the information that you need to prepare for your journey and stay in Nepal.It is very important that you read the entire information sheet at least once and understandall the contents. Your information sheet will be sent to your sending organization at least 3weeks prior to your arrival in Nepal. The pre-arrival letter will include all the necessary in-formation that will make your journey to Nepal as smooth and trouble free as possible.

Day of ArrivalVolunteers must send their flight details so that VIN staff can receive the volunteers fromthe airport. Please arrive one day prior to the project start date with your method of trans-portation (this is usually flight). Our project starts on the 1st and 15th of every month.

InductionThe induction is spread over three days and starts on 1st and 15th of each month. During theinduction you will have different sessions.These sessions include:

Introduction to the organization:Brief introduction about VIN - history,projects, working communities etc.

Arrival review: We will have a talkabout how your first day was, aboutthe airport pickups, as well as answer-ing questions about problems and con-cerns.

Sightseeing: S ightseeing is also part of the induction period, comprised of twodifferent places of cultural importance heritage of Kathmandu valley, such as Boudha,Patan Square, Pashupatinath etc.

Cultural Tips: When compared to western culture, there are a lot of differences inculture. We provide tips which will help to adapt into the Nepali life style smoothly.

Placement Information: You will receive a support pack with detailed informationabout the host family, your daily schedule, their traditions and family members.

Project Orientation: Briefing about your chosen project, e.g. teaching Tips

Health Tips: You will be provided with some vital health tips by the VIN doctor.

Nepali Language: You will receive two to three basic Nepali language classes.

Project ExplorationYou will have a project coordinator with you to introduce the place you will be staying atand your work. VIN staff will coordinate your work throughout your stay – you are howev-er expected to maintain a high level of independence.

Performance Monitoring and Follow UpEach volunteer is allocated an L/MTV Coordinator on his/her arrival. The L/MTV Coordinator is a staff of VIN ands/he supports you with your project. Monitoring your pro-gress during your voluntary service through Monthly re-ports, L/MTV get-togethers, one to one sessions, emailsand phone calls. The L/MTV Manager also makes monthlyproject visits during the placement where possible.

MeetingsMeetings are conducted once in every month. They are held on a Friday (Saturday is publicholiday in Nepal). During the meeting you can share your experiences, challenges andplans. This is also a great way to meet volunteers from different projects, different countriesand cultures.

Evaluation and Exit

At the end of your volunteering period you will have to submit a few reports, including anexit form, a handover note for the next volunteer who willtake your placement and an article about your experience. Youwill then sit for an exit interview with the Executive Directorand the Volunteer Manager . This also serves as a feedback ses-sion. Finally, you will then receive a Certificate of Completionfrom VIN for your volunteering period.

We accept only cash,(if you wish to pay by PayPal, there will be 5.5% extra cost to cover PayPal’s cost and transferfees). You can also pay in NPR, USD, Sterling Pounds and Australian dollars. The fee is non-refundable.

For students/career builders who need totranslate their academic knowledge intopractical skills.

More independent. Will usually requireless guidane and supervision.

May require more mentoring, guidance andsupervision.

Involves less logistical support. Will require more logistical support in theform of paperwork, supervision andcommunication with the university/school.This accounts for the higher fee for interns.

Accommodation

VIN arranges accommodation for your induction period and your placement peri-od, this means two to three nights at a hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu and then yourhost family or monastery/nunnery. The costs are covered by your project fee. Inplacement accommodation, your sleeping arrangements may be private or sharedand in most cases you will be required to share a bathroom and toilet facilities withyour host family or the monks/nuns. It is important for you to realize that bath-room and toilet facilities and standards of hygiene will be in accordance with localstandards. These facilities and standards may sometimes be very basic and may notbe up to in western standards. You must be prepared to cope with this.

Food

VIN provides food during the placement from the project fee. You will receive atthree meals a day throughout the placement, which will be of Nepali standards andusually Daal Bhat (lentil soup andrice), vegetable curry, pickle etc. If youwish to supplement your diet with otherfood the responsibility and cost lies withyou. We will only cover food and accom-modation for the period agreed for yourplacement and only at your placement.

In most cases you will be staying with ahost family after the project induction andwill share the same food with them. Should you have any specific dietary needs,please let us know before your arrival in Nepal. Should you wish to visit the city onthe weekends then you must cover your own food and accommodation costs.

Transportation

You will be received from the airport and dropped of at the hotel on the day ofyour arrival. After the induction period you will be placed with your host familyor monastery/nunnery. At the end of your entire volunteering period you willbe picked up from the host family and dropped off at a hotel or the VIN office.All of the above mentioned transportation facilities will be provided by VIN.Your personal travel (not including the first drop off at your placement and yourfinal pick up from your placement) will be at your own costs.

RegistrationAll the registration formalities will be completed in the first three days during the inductionperiod. This will consist of understanding and signing a contract and paying the project fee.Please note that the entire project fee will be collected during the induction days.

You will have to produce a photocopy of your passport and of your visa as well as a pass-port photo. VIN will issue a volunteer identity card for you.

Where will your money go?We are a non profit organization enabling us tokeep our prices as affordable as possible. We re-ceive absolutely no financial support from thegovernment of Nepal or from any other foreignagency. The main source of income available forVIN is the project fee that is collected from thevolunteers.

Food & accommodation for the volunteer (project induction, localtransport, host families, meals)

Staff salary: VIN has 18 paid national staff to run its proj ects and paid lo-cal volunteers.

All supports such as emergency measures and coordination of the pro-ject.

Office administration: including office rent, telephone, internet, supplies,electricity, water.

Promotional and development activities: maintaining the website, fold-ers and leaflets.

A large part of your fee however is reserved to support of VIN’s differentcommunity projects: women’s empowerment, children & youth develop-ment and community health.

VINLTV01A - English in Buddhist Monastery

VIN’s teaching English at Buddhist monastery/nunnery project aims to give volunteers/interns atrue taste of life at the monastery. It aims for an ex-change between the religious members of a certaincommunity and foreigners from a drastically differ-ent community that have just one thing in common:the eagerness to learn. You may learn about Buddhistculture, while the monks and nuns may learn theEnglish language, an extremely important asset forthem.

Possible Daily activities

Creating lesson plans for your daily teaching. Teach regular English classes. Interacting with the children of the Buddhist monastery. Helpthe other teachers advance their English. Teach basic sanitation/hygiene.

VINLTV01B - English at Community School

VIN’s teaching in Nepali-Community Schools project targets international volunteersor interns who are looking to take part in a hands-on Nepali classroom experience.With your help, VIN hopes to deliver the children and their local communities a cruciallife skill: speaking English. This life skill, if acquired will take the Nepali people muchfurther [Due to school holidays these projects will remain closed during the months January & sometimes in April, July &

October. You are encouraged to take part in the winter camps in January. There are also other VIN projects].

Creating lesson plans for your daily teaching. Teach regular English classes and other subjects. Interacting with the children of the local community. Helping the other teachers advance their English. Create local teaching resources with local teachers.


VINLTV01C- English for Deaf People

VIN’s Working with Deaf People project aims to givethe deaf people of Nepal a better shot at a quality ed-ucation. For too long now Nepal’s educational sys-tem has neglected the special needs of these peoplewho end up dropping out of school due to the lack ofattention to them. It is an incredibly fulfilling experi-ence to help those that need it most [Due to school holidays

Activities

Teach English. If you do not have a background in sign language there will bemany other ways in which you may help the school.

Set up workshops, field trips, health/sanitation sessions and various otherthings.

VINLTV01D– Teaching Computer Science

Has the idea of giving back crossed your mind? Haveyou talent/know-how to donate? VIN put togetherthe computer technology project in recognition of in-formation technology as a fast-moving, efficientmeans of communication. As things stand, there is asevere shortage of IT-know-how in Nepal. The coun-try will need to do much to improve, let alone catchup, with the outside world and join the IT-age. HelpNepal get ahead! Your participation is key to provid-ing them these tools.

Daily activities

Teach basic IT in public/community schools as well as their teachers, communi-ty youth and women.

Or/And help out in the main VIN office to maintain/improve VIN’s website. Teach computer and internet skills to local teachers.


VINLTV01E - Teaching/Coaching Sports

There is truth in that sports bring people together.Seize the opportunity and share your love for sports,or a sport of your liking, with the people of Nepal.Football/Soccer and cricket are big in Nepal whileother sports are only now beginning to take root. Asa volunteer or intern sports coach/teacher you wouldbring joy and know-how to a Nepal full of warmthand enthusiasm but few means and little know-how.

Your Role

Teach/Coach sport(s) to children and teachers in a school. Or/And teach/coach sport(s) within the community. Popular sports in Nepal are—volleyball, football, cricket, basketball and you

can add any more indoor and outdoor games.

VINLTV01F - Teaching Yoga

Nepal is a beautiful country of contrasts and naturalriches, struggling to find its modern identity and de-velopment in the midst of political struggles. Youwould be bringing Yoga to Nepal and give people achance to live a better life that comes from within,independently of the challenges and changes takingplace outside of people’s own power. You would beteaching at a Buddhist monastery or in the local com-munity. Namaste!

Your Role

Creating plans for your daily teaching. Teach regular yoga classes. Interacting with the people of the local community.


VINLTV01G - Arts and Crafts

Art is a powerful and creative means of expression. Itcan bring about positive life-enhancing change toyou and the Nepalese people, both ways. As a volun-teer or intern you will be given the unique oppor-tunity to teach arts and crafts, of your choosing, andalso learn the trade through the artistic lens of theNepalese people. Arts and crafts would also includedance. Here’s your chance to make a creative differ-ence in Nepal through art.

Your Possible Role

Teach arts and crafts (drawing, painting, creating gift cards, music, dance) atyour placement school.

Or/And learn/teach arts and crafts with local crafts people or local community.

VINLTV01H - Cultural Immersion & Teaching

This is for those who want to learn about Nepali cul-ture. You will be placed into a typical Nepali home ina village. This project has been known to pull visi-tors out of that “visitor’s bubble” and integrate theminto the place of an accepted family member of a Ne-pali household. You would be “giving back” byteaching English at the community school. This is aunique and unforgettable experience [Due to school holidaysthese projects will remain closed during the months January & sometimes inApril, July & October. You are encouraged to take part in the winter camps inJanuary. There are also other VIN projects].

Your Role

Learn Nepali language and culture through day to day activities. Interact with local community members. Teach basic English at school or other subject/activity of interest and need. Or organize basic fun activities at early childhood development centers.

VINLTV02A- Child Care: Orphanage


Every year hundreds of orphaned children wanderthe streets of Kathmandu. A majority of them be-come child labourers and never get time to actuallyenjoy their childhood. VIN aims to provide themtheir childhood and an education. VIN has beenworking in collaboration with various orphanageshomes in Nepal. If you were to become a volunteeror intern you could be placed into one of the orphan-ages VIN works with, providing the children withthe care and support they never received.

Daily activities at the orphanage

Teaching basic English (science and math if possible), aid children with homework/projects. Provide care and affection for children.

Show them basic sanitary habits such as brushing teeth and washing hands. Organize creative activities such as arts and crafts. Help to run and clean orphanage. Walk children to school and bring them back.

VINLTV02B- Child Care: Early Childhood Development

VIN’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centresare set up in rural communities for children of 3 to 5years of age. These centers work to surround chil-dren who belong to marginalized communities, witha friendly learning environment. You as a volunteermay offer your care and support for these childrenby having VIN place you in one of these ECDs. Beinga volunteer/intern at an ECD is a hands-on experi-ence that is sure to be rewarding [Due to school holidays theseprojects will remain closed during the months January & sometimes in April,July & October. Volunteers are encouraged to take part in the winter camps inJanuary. There are also other VIN projects].

Daily activities

Play games and rhymes with the children to develop mind, body and soul. Provide care and affection for children. Create activities that encourage the development of their motor, social and kin-

aesthetic skills. Create teaching materials through locally available resources.


VINLTV02C - Child Right’s and Children’s Clubs

VIN’s children’s clubs are co-curricular projects setup for children of 6 to 16 years of age. This is a plat-form provided for children that aims to develop theirinnate skills, develop their creativity, increase theirawareness of community issues such as health andthe environment, as well as help them apply whatthey have learnt in the classroom to real life situa-tions. Make your mark and make a difference for thenew generation of children in Nepal!

Your Role

Create workshops that deal with leadership training, life skills and other waysto empower kids.

Organize creative activities oriented around such tasks as contemporary dance&/or formal debate on issues such as promoting/protecting human rights.

VINLTV02D - Working for Street Children

Bring a ray of hope and an embracing smile to thedeprived street children of Kathmandu. This cityalone has an estimated 1 000 street children. School isnot an option. They work the streets, seek meals ingarbage heaps, sleep in the streets, and fall prey totraffickers and other abuse. As a volunteer/intern youcould make a world of difference. The children takegreat comfort and joy spending time with those whotruly care, that which has been lacking all along.

Daily activities

Provide make-shift education activities. Engage in recreational activities with children. Teach basic cleanliness and hygiene. Spend time with and provide them with love and care, and direction. Work at our partners drop in centers to provide basic care for these children.

VINLTV03A - Health and Medical Care


VINLTVO31-HEALTH AND MEDICAL CAREThe Health & Medical Care project aims to improvethe health of the community through education,health services and public health improvements.VIN mobilizes local and international volunteers orinterns with health backgrounds in the rural areaswhere people do not have access to health facili-ties. We support the local health post with a nurseand a doctor. Help us keep the project alive and pro-vide medical care to those most in need. You as avolunteer or intern can make a difference.

Daily activities

Provide diagnosis and medical care to community or support medical staff. Work with doctors and nurses to distribute medicine. Provide basic counseling to the patients. Support VIN doctors by measuring temperature, pulse rate and blood pressure. Raise awareness on basic health and hygiene among local community.

VINLTV03D - Animal Care

In the Animal Care project people care for animalsand animals care for people. The project aims to pro-mote and protect some of the most vulnerable ani-mals in Nepal, especially dogs. The project is muchmore than a shelter for animals in that it practicesand promotes caring and friendly behavior towardsanimals. We are looking for those whose hearts arewarm and loving, and beat for the welfare of the ne-glected animals of Nepal.

Daily activities

Work at animal care centers. Spend quality one-on-one time with the animals. Provide exercise for the dogs by taking them for a walk Care and bathe/groom animals and keep shelter clean. Help promote friendly behavior towards animals.

VINLTV04A-AGROFORESTRYParticipate in a project which aims to reduce Nepal’sdependence on the more demanding and less profita-ble traditional terrace farming in exchange for agro-forestry farming. This is a form of land cultivationwhere crops are grown among trees. It provides agreater biodiversity and greater harvests. Due to the lack of awareness matched by a rapidpopulation growth, natural resources have been de-pleted much more quickly than expected. VIN’s envi-ronment project is one that revolves around raisingawareness to local people about the conditions of theenvironment. As a volunteer or intern you can makea difference by letting VIN place you in one of therural areas, with a Nepali family. You may carry outthis awareness campaign through drama produc-tions, games, etc.

Many drivers are neither properlylicensed nor trained, vehicles are poorly maintainedand public vehicles are often overloaded (US Depart-ment of State). This is arguably one of the visibly andaudibly largest problems that afflict the city. As avolunteer or intern you would perform a valuableand socially important task by assisting the trafficpolice in traffic management and road user educa-tion. Prior to setting off you will undergo a special-ized training.

Control traffic at busy intersections under supervision of traffic police. Educate road users on rules and safe driving. Assist, especially children, old and disabled in safe usage of road. Conduct surveys for better traffic management. Help run “No Horn” campaign.

VIN has been instrumental in overseeing the recentgrowth of women’s income generation initiatives. You will be key to overseeing and trackinggrowth and furthering these initiatives.

VINLTV06C Women’s Empowerment: Microcredit Cooperative

Microcredit Cooperative Support projects have beenkey to the recent surge of women’s income generation projects. In this VIN:s support and training hasenabled many women to join the Women`s Micro-credit Cooperative. Women are now afforded credit.This in turn permits them to start their own incomegeneration activities, such as goat keeping and vege-table farming. Your role is critical to advance thefunctionality of these cooperatives.

Daily activities

Support VIN to set up women’s cooperatives to run micro-credits. Establish or strengthen social groups of women to create solidarity and reinforce microcredit. Facilitate and advance functionality of microcredit cooperatives. Develop small grant proposals to fund women's empowerment projects. If possible: research for funding agencies and raise funds for local projects.


VINLTV06D - Women’s Trafficking Prevention

Each year in Nepal an estimated 10,000-15,000 girlsare trafficked across the border to be sold into Indianbrothels or forced to become domestic servants, beg-gars, factory workers or other workers. This projectaims to prevent the trafficking of girls from Nepal,within the country or outside. You as a volunteer orintern will contribute by making a detailed study onwhat causes women’s trafficking and how to mini-mize it.

How you can help

With VIN staff visit trafficking prone areas & study the contributing factors. Research whether the family knew that their girl was being trafficked. Conduct awareness campaign projects in the community. Research and conduct case studies of families whose girls have been sold.

VINLTV07A - Youth Club and Life Skills

VIN’s youth clubs are co-curricular projects set upfor youth of 16 years of age and above. This is pro-vided for the youth and aims to foster teamwork, lifeskills, develop creativity, organization/planning,awareness of community issues such as health, theenvironment, and human rights. The volunteers under this project in involve in theconstruction of earthquake resistant infrastructure.

toilets, Community Learning Centers etc.

Post Disaster Relief: Reconstruction and Sustainability

3. Earthquake Resistant Home Construction Education (REECH) VINLTV11 - C – We willeducate people at all our working sites on building earthquake resistant homes throughour technical education program. At least 32,000 people will benefit out of this project.

Specific activities: Awareness campaigns in the community people, students on construction of the

earthquake resistant home. The volunteer can also develop a concept paper onREECH with more research.

4. Entrepreneurship Building: VINLTV11 - D - This project will help overcome financialchallenges for the Earthquake victims through multipurpose agro farm, vocational trainingslike plumbing, masonry, electrification, furniture, professional farming, dairy products,water filters making training, etc. We will target young men and women on this project.We hope to train 3000 youth (age between 16 to 40) people in different working sites.

We need very professional and technical manpower for this project.Specific activities: Provide specific trainings to earthquake victims such as multipurpose agro farm project. Facilitate youth entrepreneurship development by providing vocational trainings, e.g.

Plumbing, Masonry, Electrician, Carpentry, farming - permaculture, cottage industry likesoap making,

5.) Working with the earthquake victim children, VINLTV05 - E : The children from many partsof rural Nepal were rescued and brought under a same roof with an aim to support their livingand provide quality education. There are 350 students aged 4-17 years in a communityschool in Thankot.

The main objective of this project is to support and care the earthquake victims children fortheir overall development and protect their child rights by providing them favorableenvironment for their growth.
