Have you ever needed a vacation to recover from your vacation? Jet lag, fl ight cancellations, border and security lineups, car rentals, lost luggage, vaccinations, passports, visas, and travel insurance are some of the potentially energy draining travel nuisances that come to mind. Experiencing a new culture and the

adventure and thrills of travel can be a great experience that provides memories to last a lifetime, but doesn’t the pressure to see everything and do everything evaporate with a well-planned road trip? Remember the times when the journey was part of the adventure, and all the neat stops and photo ops along the way were half the fun, or at least turned into infamous “remember when…” tales down the road?

With a trip to La Casa Cottage Resort, you can enjoy fun, sun and relaxation including activities for the whole family. No matter where you’re coming from, there will be some must-see stops along the way. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to relax in your own stand-alone cottage, fully-equipped with full kitchens, balconies, and lake views. Th e set-up off ers you fl exibility to enjoy a home cooked meal, or to dine at the resort’s Zocalos restaurant with new head chef, Brian Keyes. Many cottages will even allow your family pet to join you, where on most trips they are left out. Additionally, with the number of cottages available at the resort, it is a perfect setting for great family reunions, or reunions of any type.

With a cottage vacation you can replace the mass produced holiday with something more personal and unique, while enjoying the sights and sounds of your own backyard and supporting local communities. We hope you’ll look into Lake Okanagan’s La Casa Cottage Resort for your next staycation.

by gordon mckeeparis day trip

If you have been to Paris a few times, or you are spending a week or more in the city, then you may want to shake things up a bit and head out

of the city for the day and a change of scenery.

Th e most popular day trip from Paris, with good reason, is the chateau of Versailles. Louis XIV’s gran-diose reconstruction of a royal hunting lodge may be

one of the most spectacular displays of wealth and pomp ever. About 30 minutes driving time from the centre of Paris, in a charming little town, you will fi nd the famous Gallery of Mirrors and dozens of equally sumptuous rooms crammed full of objet d’art and your fellow tourists. But Versailles, big as it is, has always been crowded. Even back in the day competi-tion at court for a good room was something fi erce.

Aft er taking in all the interior wonders, the acres of gardens provide a respite from the crowds and really shouldn’t be missed. If you are tired of walking, there are golf carts available to rent. To ensure you get the most out of your visit, make a reservation in advance or use your Museums and Monuments pass to go to the head of the line.

A slightly less well known chateau easily accessible as a day trip from Paris is Fontainebleau, about 55km from the centre of Paris. Th is is another ancient palace transformed. Originally built by Louis VII in the 12th century and expanded by Francis I, it then fell into disrepair by the time of the Revolution. Th ese days, it is mostly associated with Napoleon who renovated it into its present form.

If you’ve had enough of palaces, then Claude Mon-et’s house and garden in Giverny is a relaxing destina-tion a mere 80 km west of Paris. Th e gardens with the Japanese bridge and lily pond which inspired much of his later work are free to enter and the house with Monet’s collections is certainly worth the entrance charge. You can also visit the village’s impressive Mu-seum of Impressionist Art. And if you still haven’t had your fi ll of art, a small detour to the village of Auver sur Oise will put you in the world of Vincent van Gogh.

Th e town of Chartres is about 90 km southwest of Paris with frequent trains available to get you there and back. It is home to Chartres Cathedral, consid-ered one of the fi nest Gothic buildings in Europe. It’s dazzling stained glass has been amazing visitors since 1271 and is almost completely original. Th e building holding up the stained glass is quite something as well – adorned with hundreds of statues and is also virtu-ally as it was originally built. Many churches were de-

faced or destroyed during the French Revolution but Chartres Cathedral was so beloved that the towns-people protected it from damage. To help you get the most of your visit, Mr. Malcolm Miller has been giv-ing guided tours/lectures since the early ‘80s, and his love and knowledge of the building are profound. It is defi nitely worth arriving for one of his 1 hour tours at 12:00 and 2:45.

If you are looking for some excitement aft er all that art and culture, perhaps Eurodisney, Mickey’s French home, is the change of pace needed. It is easily acces-sible in about 35 minutes from the RER Nation train station. You’ll enjoy all the Disney excitement, pa-rades, fi reworks, and a castle. It could be a great break for families with kids or bigger kids, too.

Th is is just a sampling of some of the fun you can have within a few hours of Paris. With the great train system in Europe, there’s plenty of options to consider to add to your vacation.

sive depression. Th en get ready for the volcanic hike of a lifetime; wear layers to deal with the changing temperatures. Th e descent from the summit is roughly 27 miles, so pack a picnic lunch.

Aran Islands, IrelandTh e classic cable-knit fi sherman’s sweater may have put the Aran Is-lands on the sartorial map, but this group of three islands at the mouth of Galway Bay has long been on the picnicker’s map. Pick up some smoked salmon and brown bread—and perhaps some whiskey—before embarking on a scenic ferry ride to the karst limestone landscapes and rough green terrain of Inishmore is-land.

National Sculpture Garden, Wash-ington, D.C.All summer long, the Jazz in the Sculpture Garden series is music to picnickers’ ears. As an extension of the National Gallery of Art, this el-egant oasis adjacent to the National Mall garden houses 17 three-dimen-sional works of art from such nota-bles as Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, and Roy Lichtenstein.

lloyds welcomes “cruises abroad”

Aft er close to 23 years in business, Ron and Sharon Woloschuk are taking a well

deserved retirement from the day-to-day routine of operating a travel agency. Ron and Sharon opened a ‘cruise-only’ agency in Kerrisdale in 1989 and were ahead of the curve, successfully selling out several full ship charters with Holland America on 3 and 4 day West Coast itinerar-ies. Th ey followed up with a focus on hosting cruise-tours to worldwide destinations and this coupled with great customer service proved to be a recipe for success. To this day they enjoy (and will continue to do so) the opportunity to accompany their clients (many of whom have become good friends) on unique worldwide itineraries. “It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience” says Ron, “Sharon and I had the good fortune

of working with our son Curtis, so it was a real family aff air. However, given our passion for travel and our desire to improve our golf game, we wanted to step back now while we are young enough to enjoy the fruits of our labour. In conjunction with Lloyds, we anticipate hosting future travel adventures and as always, cli-ent suggestions are appreciated.”

“We chose to work with Lloyds, as we had a great relationship with Barbara Broadbent when she owned her own agency (Banner Travel) just around the corner from us in Ker-risdale and the fact that Barbara currently works with Lloyds was to us an endorsement of Lloyd’s integ-rity and professionalism. Meeting owners, Bruce and Wendy Fougner, convinced us we would be making the right decision as it was really im-

portant to us that our clients be well looked aft er. We also like the idea that Lloyds off ers their own escorted tours (both land and sea)” says Sha-ron.

“A testament to Sharon and Ron was a turnout of close to 70 faithful clientele for a wine and cheese re-ception held in their honour at our offi ce in mid-April.” states Wendy. “We were also amazed to hear so many great travel stories from those that attended.”

So, all of us at Lloyds extend a big welcome to past clients of Cruises Abroad. If you received a paper copy of this newsletter we also have a full colour electronic version that we can email you, so please let us know your preference.

beautiful burma

For some people with wanderlust, the lure of exotic lands and people so unlike home are what keep them going. For others, it’s the opportunity to immerse themselves in history and culture. Luckily, travel to the various regions in Asia satisfi es most travel hankerings. One location you might consider adding

when travelling to the more well-known travel destinations of Th ailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, is Burma (Myanmar).

You can visit Burma throughout the year, but the best time is between October and February when the weather is neither too hot nor wet. Th ere are so many options, including neighbouring countries, to make your trip to the region memorable and as busy, or relaxed, as you like to be on vacation.

While in Burma, you might want to ensure you put some of these options on your must-do list:

Tour the 2500 year-old Shwe Dagon Pagoda, the largest and oldest golden monument on earth, where * Burmese kings and queens have donated their body weight in gold to the pyramid.

See the golden throne of the last Burmese king that just might outshine those of emperors, maharajas, *

Page 11: Lloyds Quarterly Newsletter - May 2012

www.lloydstravel.com | MAY 2012MAY 2012 11

Charlemagne, Louis XVI, Napoleon, Cleopatra and William the Conqueror. You’ll marvel at the throne’s carvings that depict many a tale.

Explore Kuthodaw Pagoda at the foot of Mandalay Hill, the home of the white marble Buddhist bible. * Inscribed on 729 marble slabs and placed in individual temples within a square, it is an unbelievable site.

Ring the Mingun Bell, a wonder at a height of 26 feet and weighing 90.55 metric tons.*

Visit the 2400 year-old miracle Golden Rock, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. You have probably seen images of this * golden boulder precariously balanced on the edge of a cliff .

Tour the amazing fl oating-islands and row a boat in the highest and largest lake in SE Asia.*

See living mummies. Th at’s right, living mummies. Th ese are the preserved bodies of Buddhist monks * that are said to be still growing nails and hair decades and centuries aft er death.

Feel small by visiting the largest reclining Buddha in the World, the Shwethalyaung – a colossal, 181’ * long reclining statue of Buddha. It is said to have been built in 994 AD, lost when Bago (Pegu) was de-stroyed in 1757, and then rediscovered under a cover of jungle growth in 1881.

If you are pagoda and miracle weary, you might enjoy scuba diving among the coral of the southern * Myanmar sea. Or, for the extremely daring, you may wish to climb Khakaborazi Peak, the highest peak in southeast Asia and sister mountain to Everest. If more calming pursuits are what you are interested in, spend a bit of time with a fortune-teller and see your future or enjoy a bit of shopping to get some great deals on jewelry.

Before you go, keep in mind, you will need a visa, so make sure you have that in your trip planning. While there, you will want to refrain from kissing and hugging in public, pointing at things with your feet, sitting with your back to a Buddha image, or acting inappropriately toward a sacred thing such as a Buddha image or touching a monk. And before you leave, make sure you understand what needs to be declared to Customs so you don’t have items confi scated when you depart.

For more information, or to book a trip to this unique destination, contact Lesli: (604) 872-5464 phone1-800-800-7252 [email protected].

This voyage juxtaposes the vibrant colors of autumn leaves with the shimmering sands of exotic beaches. In Maine, you can explore the culturally

rich Arts District of Portland and also tour the childhood home of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which is the oldest standing structure on the peninsula. Single-mindedly concentrating on one country at a time before moving on to the next, this splendid voyage presents the region’s true luminaries. In Italy, discover the joy of simply ambling about the streets of gracious Por-tofi no. Watch a fi ery sunset over the Bay of Naples, and you will understand why the wealthiest ancient Romans chose Sorrento for their summer homes. Spain tantalizes with sophisticated urban pleasures such as the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the more relaxed beach-blessed island of Ibiza. And what better way to see the extravagances of the French Riviera than to stroll Saint-Tropez’s harbor, marveling at the sheer lavishness of the yachts?

If you’re wondering what you might like to do for Christmas this year, how about gathering

up your family (large or small) and sailing with Holland America on a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise ??

It’s a great experience that can cross generational lines (however many of those you may have in your family).

On December 23, 2012 you sail from Ft. Lauderdale on the ms Nieuw Amsterdam. Th e stops will be Half Moon Cay (their own won-derful private island); Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Georgetown, Cayman Is-lands; and Mahogany Bay, Hondu-ras; then back to Ft. Lauderdale for 30 Dec.

Th e ship is the newest of the Hol-

land America fl eet, carrying a maxi-mum of 2100 guests. Th eir academy-trained professional crew members take genuine pride in making your cruise relaxing and remarkable in every way. We have a group booking on this sailing, so prices are good, and there are special extras to enjoy.

Th ere are a multitude of excur-sions off ered : all kinds of sea sports, horseback riding, nature walks, fi sh-ing, parasailing, biking, turtle farms, dolphin encounters – to name but a few. You can also just wander the ports on your own…at your leisure.

Tantalizing dining room menus change by the day. Th e breakfast, lunch and dinner buff ets in the Lido are one of the many other options. In the evening, a classic Italian restau-rant is set up in one area of the Lido.

Th e Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind are specialty restaurants, with a nomi-nal fee for dining there. Colourful Christmas decorations, great enter-tainment, a variety of planned ac-tivities and the ever-popular casino are there for you to enjoy.

Club Hal is a wonderful area for kids- divided by ages. Kids ages 3-7; Tweens ages 8-12; and the Loft and the Oasis for Teens. Th ey have fully-trained counselors, with a wide va-riety of activities. Also featured are Kids & Teens Culinary Workshops.

Hope you can join us .. Barbara and Ian will be there with members of Barbara’s family – four genera-tions in all!!

DID YOU KNOW?Lloyds has an online booking en-

gine on the website? If you haven’t tried it already, you should. You can search for fl ights, hotels, packaged vacations and last-minute deals. Th e best part is you get the indepen-dence of booking your own travel arrangements while having the se-curity of a travel agent to help when you have questions. And you may be surprised to know, we’ve tested it, that the prices are at or below those found on Expedia. So, when plan-ning your next holiday, do some pre-planning and investigation us-ing our online booking tool.

PASSPORTS Many countries are not allowing

you to travel with a water damaged passport. When travelling make sure you not only protect your pass-port from theft , but also from liq-uid damage. You don’t want a note on fi le that you might be tampering with your passport.

It may sound like a broken record, but check your passport, check your passport, and if you haven’t lately, check your passport when you begin your trip planning. Lots of countries are beginning to change their requirements and are asking for passports to be valid for at least 6 months beyond entering the coun-try. You don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute, or, worse yet, be denied entry when you get there. So when you are checking to see if you need a visa for travel, also check and

see if there are specifi c passport re-quirements.

TRAVEL INSURANCEOver the last year, our agents have

seen fi rst hand why travel insurance is important when traveling. Al-though no one plans to get seriously injured, or die, while on vacation, it does happen. You don’t want to be incurring huge costs that were never planned for. It doesn’t even have to be you that causes the change in travel plans. What if a loved one gets sick, or there’s some other crisis, and you have to cancel your trip or come back early? Th e scenarios are end-less. Make sure you’re covered. Buy your travel insurance - it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
