If you have been to Paris a few times, or you are spending a week or more in the city, then you may want to shake things up a bit and head out

of the city for the day and a change of scenery.

Th e most popular day trip from Paris, with good reason, is the chateau of Versailles. Louis XIV’s gran-diose reconstruction of a royal hunting lodge may be

one of the most spectacular displays of wealth and pomp ever. About 30 minutes driving time from the centre of Paris, in a charming little town, you will fi nd the famous Gallery of Mirrors and dozens of equally sumptuous rooms crammed full of objet d’art and your fellow tourists. But Versailles, big as it is, has always been crowded. Even back in the day competi-tion at court for a good room was something fi erce.


Aft er taking in all the interior wonders, the acres of gardens provide a respite from the crowds and really shouldn’t be missed. If you are tired of walking, there are golf carts available to rent. To ensure you get the most out of your visit, make a reservation in advance or use your Museums and Monuments pass to go to the head of the line.

A slightly less well known chateau easily accessible as a day trip from Paris is Fontainebleau, about 55km from the centre of Paris. Th is is another ancient palace transformed. Originally built by Louis VII in the 12th century and expanded by Francis I, it then fell into disrepair by the time of the Revolution. Th ese days, it is mostly associated with Napoleon who renovated it into its present form.

If you’ve had enough of palaces, then Claude Mon-et’s house and garden in Giverny is a relaxing destina-tion a mere 80 km west of Paris. Th e gardens with the Japanese bridge and lily pond which inspired much of his later work are free to enter and the house with Monet’s collections is certainly worth the entrance charge. You can also visit the village’s impressive Mu-seum of Impressionist Art. And if you still haven’t had your fi ll of art, a small detour to the village of Auver sur Oise will put you in the world of Vincent van Gogh.

Th e town of Chartres is about 90 km southwest of Paris with frequent trains available to get you there and back. It is home to Chartres Cathedral, consid-ered one of the fi nest Gothic buildings in Europe. It’s dazzling stained glass has been amazing visitors since 1271 and is almost completely original. Th e building holding up the stained glass is quite something as well – adorned with hundreds of statues and is also virtu-ally as it was originally built. Many churches were de-

faced or destroyed during the French Revolution but Chartres Cathedral was so beloved that the towns-people protected it from damage. To help you get the most of your visit, Mr. Malcolm Miller has been giv-ing guided tours/lectures since the early ‘80s, and his love and knowledge of the building are profound. It is defi nitely worth arriving for one of his 1 hour tours at 12:00 and 2:45.

If you are looking for some excitement aft er all that art and culture, perhaps Eurodisney, Mickey’s French home, is the change of pace needed. It is easily acces-sible in about 35 minutes from the RER Nation train station. You’ll enjoy all the Disney excitement, pa-rades, fi reworks, and a castle. It could be a great break for families with kids or bigger kids, too.

Th is is just a sampling of some of the fun you can have within a few hours of Paris. With the great train system in Europe, there’s plenty of options to consider to add to your vacation.

National Sculpture Garden, Wash-ington, D.C.All summer long, the Jazz in the Sculpture Garden series is music to picnickers’ ears. As an extension of the National Gallery of Art, this el-egant oasis adjacent to the National Mall garden houses 17 three-dimen-sional works of art from such nota-bles as Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, and Roy Lichtenstein.

life, from raptors to tule elk, and bor-dered by a coastline favored by ele-phant seals. Head to the nearby Point Reyes Lighthouse for prime whale watching in January and March and coastal beauty year-round.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, Western Cape, South AfricaMake a quick green escape from Cape Town for a picnic lunch in this spectacularly rugged and refi ned space on the slopes of Table Moun-tain. Pack a bottle of wine from Stel-lenbosch and some biltong and hike the trails through natural forests and fynbos (“fi ne bush” or shrubland in Afrikaans).

Jardin des Tuileries, Paris, FranceFountains, sculptures, two museums and countless comfortable chairs make this garden on the perimeter of the Musée du Louvre a surprisingly tranquil space for staging your own “déjeuner sur l’herbe”.

Haleakala National Park, HawaiiHow many picnics can you fi t into a day? Beat the sunrise and head to the summit of Maui’s Haleakala vol-cano—to a 10,023-foot peak called Pu’u ‘Ula’ula—to enjoy a breakfast picnic as dawn unfolds over a mas-

Aft er close to 23 years in business, Ron and Sharon Woloschuk are taking a well

deserved retirement from the day-to-day routine of operating a travel agency. Ron and Sharon opened a ‘cruise-only’ agency in Kerrisdale in 1989 and were ahead of the curve, successfully selling out several full ship charters with Holland America on 3 and 4 day West Coast itinerar-ies. Th ey followed up with a focus on hosting cruise-tours to worldwide destinations and this coupled with great customer service proved to be a recipe for success. To this day they enjoy (and will continue to do so) the opportunity to accompany their clients (many of whom have become good friends) on unique worldwide itineraries. “It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience” says Ron, “Sharon and I had the good fortune

of working with our son Curtis, so it was a real family aff air. However, given our passion for travel and our desire to improve our golf game, we wanted to step back now while we are young enough to enjoy the fruits of our labour. For some people with wanderlust, the lure of exotic lands and people so unlike home are what keep them going. For others, it’s the opportunity to immerse themselves in history and culture. Luckily, travel to the various regions in Asia satisfi es most travel hankerings. One location you might consider adding

when travelling to the more well-known travel destinations of Th ailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, is Burma (Myanmar).

You can visit Burma throughout the year, but the best time is between October and February when the weather is neither too hot nor wet. Th ere are so many options, including neighbouring countries, to make your trip to the region memorable and as busy, or relaxed, as you like to be on vacation.

While in Burma, you might want to ensure you put some of these options on your must-do list:

Tour the 2500 year-old Shwe Dagon Pagoda, the largest and oldest golden monument on earth, where * Burmese kings and queens have donated their body weight in gold to the pyramid.

See the golden throne of the last Burmese king that just might outshine those of emperors, maharajas, *


Charlemagne, Louis XVI, Napoleon, Cleopatra and William the Conqueror. You’ll marvel at the throne’s carvings that depict many a tale.

See living mummies. Th at’s right, living mummies. Th ese are the preserved bodies of Buddhist monks * that are said to be still growing nails and hair decades and centuries aft er death.

Feel small by visiting the largest reclining Buddha in the World, the Shwethalyaung – a colossal, 181’ * long reclining statue of Buddha. It is said to have been built in 994 AD, lost when Bago (Pegu) was de-stroyed in 1757, and then rediscovered under a cover of jungle growth in 1881.

If you are pagoda and miracle weary, you might enjoy scuba diving among the coral of the southern * Myanmar sea. Or, for the extremely daring, you may wish to climb Khakaborazi Peak, the highest peak in southeast Asia and sister mountain to Everest. If more calming pursuits are what you are interested in, spend a bit of time with a fortune-teller and see your future or enjoy a bit of shopping to get some great deals on jewelry.

Before you go, keep in mind, you will need a visa, so make sure you have that in your trip planning. While there, you will want to refrain from kissing and hugging in public, pointing at things with your feet, sitting with your back to a Buddha image, or acting inappropriately toward a sacred thing such as a Buddha image or touching a monk. And before you leave, make sure you understand what needs to be declared to Customs so you don’t have items confi scated when you depart.

PASSPORTS Many countries are not allowing
