Water for everyone in Khayelitsha
• Over 500.000 inhabitants
• Second largest township
• Area of 24 km²
•Constantly growing population
• Almost no metering and therefore no control of water distribution
• Huge leakage of water identified instead of arriving at the people‘s homes.
What are we talking about ?

• 45 radio equipped meters
• leakage detection is activated• data for every 2 hours since 11th May 2010
Data analysis for 114 days:
Total water consumption: 1.269,412 m³Total leakage alarm: 5 metersLoss due to leakage: 540,360 m³Percentage of leakage: 42,57 %

Advantages:
• Khayelitsha at your finger tips!!! Easy - one mouse click to detect leakage
• 100 % automatic => no reading errors, no-one has to enter Khayelitsha
• 100 % control over water supply into Khayelitsha
• Leakage alarm
• Project can be duplicated to any other township in ZA
• 13 radio receivers• Antennas on lamp posts

Industry Facts!
•No municipality can balance their water
•15-20% of all meters are not read at all
•Unknown %’s of meters that are incorrectly read
•Billing estimates are made irrespective of consumption
As a result!40 000 Khayelitsha meters @ R7.92 per 1x meter read per month
Traditional meter reading costs R4 million per year
System savings on meter reading data
•System running costs=virtually zero•One product that never has to be removed•Leakage detection and diagnostic systems•Tamper detection•Unaccounted for water and water balances•Accurate and timeous

Project Summary:
Continual annual leakage Cost
Continual annual meter read Cost
•Total project cost equated 1/3 of councils annual loss
Saved money can be invested into other projects for the PEOPLE!
Result: NO LEAKAGE COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT
Total control over water consumption immediately after system installation

The Challenge:As a response to the current increase in water and waste water charges, and in line with Dublin Port Authorities commitment to water conservation, HYDROMETER was contracted to design and implement an intelligent monitoring system which interfaced directly with Dublin City Councils existing AMR network.

Case Study Dublin PortCase Study Dublin PortObjective:
•Obtain daily water meter data from over 130 commercial premises.
•Recorded data to be analysed in conjunction with DCC export information•Changing topography added to the complexity of the project•area to be monitored had a geographical spread of two square kilometers with the greatest distance between meter and receiver of 2.1 kilometers.
•Main objective- WATER CONSERVATION
The Solution:
•Initial survey undertaken to identify the customers, premises, meters and their locations to be monitored.
•The survey highlighted any physical constraints and health and safety risks to be taken into account during the initial design phase.

Antenna Installation
•Range testing highlighted radio black spots by building shadow & urban canyon.
•Designers paid attention to communicating with meters in these areas.
•A specific solution was produced for each meter located in a poor radio area, this resulted in a small number of meters requiring their transponders to be upgraded.
![Page 20: Lloyd Long –CEO: Aqua-Loc South Africa Hydrometer GmbH](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022012623/61a2cbd43087f96d21225c79/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)

THE RESULTS•The solution is currently providing accurate hourly meter reads for all water meters. •This information is used to pin point specific areas and customers where further conservation measures are required.
Meter Locations overlaid on a satellite map.
•The system also manages the daily aggregation of all water consumption and compares it to the export meter daily usage figure.
•The export meters are set up on the system as main meters (Parent) with the commercial meters set up as sub meters (Child).
•Dublin Port is in the process of subdividing its network into smaller district metered areas, the new DMA meters will also be integrated to allow for finer analysis per DMA.
