With the support of the Government in Tajikistan, telecommunications technologies have developed rapidly. In three years, the subscriber base of cellular services grew by 61.7%. The level of mobile penetration has reached 88.6%. There are six mobile phone companies operating in the country: MLT, “Babilon-M”, “Tсell”, “Beeline”, and “TK-mobile”, JSC “Tajiktelekom”. According to ComNews Research, Tajikistan’s mobile communication market has been recognized as one of the most competitive among CIS countries. Babilon Mobile operates within the GSM-900/1800 standard and is owned by local and foreign shareholders. The commercial launch of the network took place on 1 January 2003. In July 2005 the company launched its commercial operation of a 3G network. As a result of the network upgrade subscribers of Babilon-Mobile can now use mobile Internet at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbit/sec. Tajikistan has broad prospects for the development of mobile Internet, with Babilon Mobile, TT-Mobile, Indigo, and “Takom” engaged in its promotion.
