History of Sports Medicine

The origins of sports medicine lie in ancient Greece and ancient Rome where physical education was a necessary and valued aspect of youth – training and athletic contests first became a part of everyday life during these times. However, it was not until 1928 at the Olympics in St. Moritz, when a committee came together to plan the First International Conference of Sports Medicine, that the term itself was coined. In the 5th century, however, the care of athletes was primarily the responsibility of specialists. These were trainer-coaches who were considered to be experts on diet, physical therapy, hygiene, and sport-specific techniques.

Team physicians must effectively communicate with the player, parent(s), trainer, coach, and administration for efficient care.

With professional athletes, the agents as well as the team league add an extra dimension for direction of care.

Tampa, FL (April 16, 2007) -- Larry Lemak, MD, chief executive officer of the Sports Medicine and Athletic-Related Trauma Institute (SMART) at USF Health, has been named the “2007 Sports Medicine Person of the Year” by the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida (ATAF). Dr. Lemak received the award April 14 at the annual ATAF Clinical Symposium and Business Meeting in Orlando.

National Center for Sports Safety

Mission: The National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS) was founded to promote the importance of injury prevention and safety in youth sports through education and research.

NCSS Curriculum

A sports safety course developed by the NCSS in conjunction with representatives from medical, sports, and emergency response fields.

• It focuses on educating coaches in three key areas:Injury Prevention, Sports Safety, and Emergency

Response

• Aimed at decreasing the number and/or severity of injuries and fatalities among youth athletes.

• Specifically designed to provide ALL coaches with a foundation in the most basic areas of sports safety education.

Justification for Community Sports Safety

“There is not one parent that would drop their child off at a local community pool if there were not a certified lifeguard on duty.

That same standard of care should be available at every sports facility in this country.”

Injury Surveillance

The Injury Surveillance Program’s objective is to monitor injury data to provide factual statistics and severity of injuries thru analysis of the data collected.

This data will be utilized to further injury prevention and to create best practices for preventing injuries.

Pilot Program focused on 45 Schools in Central Alabama (Jefferson & Shelby Counties), with an intention to roll out into a statewide program once methodology is honed.

All data collected will be on behalf of AHSAA.

Experiences

Though I have had to work hard to be successful in our practice, I have been able to share some wonderful experiences via sports with my family!

Conclusion

Though I have had to work very hard to be a Sports Medicine Surgeon, it has allowed me to make lifelong friends.

And really, it has also allowed me to spend some good time with my wife, and our best friends….our three dogs, three sons, and five grand children!
