Presentation: Dating
Violence
Black History Month, or National African American
History Month, is an annual celebration of achieve-
ments by black Americans and a time for recognizing
the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.
The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the
brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and
other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every
U.S. president has officially designated the month of
February as Black History Month. Other countries
around the world, including Canada and the United
Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black
history.

Teen Dating Violence (DV) Awareness Month
This is a national effort to raise awareness about abuse in teen and 20 some-
thing relationships and promote programs that prevent abuse during the month
of February and beyond.
Our students participated in a Dating Violence workshop presented by Ms. An-
gelica Brodeur of Women in Distress. Ms. Brodeur is an educational specialist
specializing in educating teens regarding developing healthy relationships and
building self-esteem The workshop was very informative and hands-on! Our
students received an opportunity to participate by asking questions, enacting
dating scenes, viewing a documentary, and also having question and answer
time. The information was well received, and we look forward in Ms. Brodeur
returning to LJEC in the future.
Lastly, dating violence is more common than many people think. One in three
teens in the U.S. will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse by some-
one they are in a relationship with. It is my goal as the School Social Worker to
spread awareness to our students and assist in them in developing healthy rela-
tionships.

Lanier-James Education Center is a
mandatory uniform school. All stu-
dents are required to be in uniform

Take Our Daughters and Sons to
Work Day
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) celebrates
Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on
Tuesday, February 2, 2016. This year ’s theme
is "Sparking AHA! Moments.” . BCPS joins the
national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day campaign to provide opportunities
for parents and other adults to showcase their places of employment, explain their job
responsibilities, introduce their co-workers, and present the various career choices that
are available in the workplace. Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is designed
to assist students in formulating ideas about future career paths. A day at work will
heighten the aspirations of students, helping them to make the connection between ac-
ademic success and success in the world of work.
