About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day

gifts to their pets.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names to see who their valentines would be. They

would wear the names on their sleeves for one week. The phrase “to wear your heart on your sleeve” may

have begun during that period..

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel •On Feb. 14, 1867, Sakichi Toyoda, whose textile machinery company spawned the Toyota Motor Corp., is born. In 1937, Toyota was formed as a spinoff of his Toyoda Loom Works. “Toyota” reportedly was considered a luckier name than “Toyoda” and is easier to write in Japanese characters.

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better. They fight for honor at the first challenge, make love with no moral restraint, and they do not for all their marvelous instincts appear to know about death. Being such wonderfully uncomplicated beings, they need us to do their worrying.

Teresa House provides compassionate care and support to residents who are nearing the end of a terminal illness, and to their families, in a home-like setting. Made possible by the generosit y of our community, all care is provided free of charge at our two bed residence. We are located at 21 Highland Road in the Village of Geneseo.

Volunteers are essential to the success of a comfort care home. To carry out our mission of care, we require 70 volunteer caregivers each week. Additional volunteers assist with publicity, fundraising and maintenance tasks. At the present time, our greatest need is for volunteer caregivers.

Volunteer caregivers work in teams of two to provide care and companionship to residents and family members. Duties include providing compassion, hands-on caregiving, medication assistance, meal preparation and light housekeeping.

Volunteer Testimonials:

When I talk to people about TH, I tell them that, contrary to some beliefs, Comfort Care Homes are full of life! Teresa House is a place where kindness and love reside--not to mention humor and joy. It is a gift to myself to be a part of the Teresa House team. ~ Jean H. (1997)

Volunteering at Teresa House gives you a great sense of community involvement. Being active with thi s organization is extremely rewarding as you meet other volunteers and see first-hand what a differenc e you’re making in so many people’s lives. ~ Hannah G. (2010)

I have been volunteering ever since I was a little girl and have never felt so loved and appreciated than I do by the residents of Teresa House. If you love to give back to the community this is one of the be st places to meet some of the best people. You also have the opportunity to hear their story and help t hem in their time of need. ~ Richelle P. (2012)

Volunteering connects me with my community, as well as with my own heart. I receive as much, if not more, than I give. Being part of the Teresa House family weaves me into the fabric of the lives of o thers - a truly priceless gift! ~ Miriam L. (2003)

No previous experience is required. Volunteers are provided with training and are supported with ongoing mentoring from experienced volunteers and nurses. New volunteers work as an extra, with teams of two seasoned volunteers, while gaining experience. Volunteers choose shifts in accordance with their personal schedules and available time. Care shifts are four hours in duration and are available days and evenings, seven days a week. Whether you can dedicate four hours once a week, once a month or even during just certain months of the year, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

If you have a desire to help others, to serve the community and to work with an extraordinary team of compassionate individuals, please contact us and/or visit our website: www.teresahouse.org . To sign-up for an upcoming orientation or to learn more about volunteer opportunities, please call Peter Brandt, Volunteer Coordinator, at 585-705-3721 or leave a message at Teresa House, 585-243-1978.

Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

Are You Worried About The Security Of Your Home?

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE from Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

Remote viewing is a key feature for our customers. Strategically placed surveillance equipment

can give you peace of mind.

On Friday I was at

Walmart in Henrietta. My

friend and I notice a sign for

a special on a mani-pedi. I

said “Should I?” And she

said go for it. First I had my

first Pedicure ever. Kim did a

wonderful job. I felt like a

queen. My friend took

pictures and said to me

“Now that’s off your bucket

list.” I was unaware that one

of the customers asked my

friend what that meant. She

explained that I have cancer

and had never had a

pedicure. Next I had a

wonderful manicure and

had more fun picking out

colors of nail polish. When I

was done the manicurist

said there’d be no charge.

Everyone in there chipped

in to pay for me! I was so

surprised. They also gave

me a $15 gift certificate to

Walmart. What a wonderful

surprise. I’d like to thank

those who were at Regal

Nails at the Henrietta

Walmart!

So you work for this company for 6 years, show up every day, do any job that was asked of you, work nights, weekends, holidays, whenever needed, never have an issue with a fellow employee, have the respect of fellow employees, never an issue with a customer, never do any damage to equipment, told you’re an outstanding employee and amazing work ethic but you get terminated because they’re making changes in 2016. So that’s the American dream? Does everything right and it still doesn’t matter? Thanks guys!!!

We had a party at our home in an east side suburb last night. Guests included members of a local private school football team. As they were leaving, neighbors (who know us well and have our phone number) called the police. When you see these young men in the newspaper being

lauded for their grades and athletic achievements, I hope you are all ashamed of yourselves. Would you have called 911 if they were white? The police officers who responded were thrilled to meet these well-known local athletes. These boys were walking to their cars. And you called the police. Disgusting.

Shame on people who book an appointment with a hair stylist and then fail to show up, or even call to say you can’t keep the appointment. It is more disgraceful when the appointment is for three or more hours. You are stealing money from the stylist, who more than likely is paid on commission, and cannot fill the time with someone else. Have consideration for a person who is working to make a living!

On January 16th about 10am, my brother was in a terrible accident, caused by a station wagon cutting in front of him. Swerving to miss this person, he crashed head on into another car! The person left the scene leaving behind two people who were taken to emergency! If anyone witnessed this accident, please contact Monroe Co. Sheriff’s Dept. This person is a menace to the roads and needs to be caught before someone is killed!

Thanks very much to the

person (s) who found &

turned in my keys at Tops!

I wanted to say “Thank

You So Much” to the

gentleman who helped me

and my children change

our windshield wipers in

the Geneseo Dollar Tree

parking lot the Sunday

before Christmas. Thank

you for also teaching my

son Trevor how to remove

the old wiper blades for

future reference.

Sincerely,

A very grateful

single mom!

The residents of Lakeville

THANK YOU to all the local

Gratefully Yours,

Residents of

Many thanks to the

who took her winnings and

and me to make our new

year happier!

Tips to Speed t hrough

Airport Security

* Pick the fastest security

agent. If you are a pro at

picking the fastest checkout

line at the grocery store, now

is the time to use your skills.

Sometimes it isn’t about the

shortest line, but the most

efficient agent.

* Don’t push the 3-1-1 rule.

Peanut butter, jam, gravy and

cranberry sauce won’t make it

through security even if they

are your lunch for the day.

Treat these items just as you

would lotions, toothpaste and

other liquids and gels.

* Keep gifts unwrapped. No

one wants to have their

Christmas presents greedily

torn apart by TSA officers, but

if they need too, they will.

Wrap your gifts after you’ve

flown.

* Be a neat packer. Carefully

packed suitcases are fre-

quently easier to scan with

the X-ray machine. If TSA

agents do need to open your

bag, you will be saved the

embarrassment of your suit-

case’s contents exploding all

over the airport.

* Organize carry-ons. Once

you get to the X-ray machine,

it’s best if you are ready to

go. Stow your laptop in an

easy-to-reach space and have

your 3-1-1 bag ready. A few

moments of planning before-

hand can save you hold-ups

and stress while you’re in

line.

* Plan a sensible outfit. Your

airport outfit might have to be

a little boring in order to

speed through security. You

don’t want to have to take off

jewelry, belts, scarves, coats

and lace-up boots, so today is

the day to wear slip on shoes

and a simple, one-layer outfit

with no accessories.

* Have your documents

ready. Get out your drivers’

license, passport and board-

ing pass before you reach the

agent. This keeps you from

having to root around in your

pockets and bags while you

make others wait.

3 ways to improve indoor air quality all year long

As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.

In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

1. Clean the floors: Dirty floors are one of the chief contributors to poor indoor air quality. Dust, dirt, pollen, and pet dander can accumulate on floors, leading to poor air quality and potentially aggravating respiratory conditions such as asthma. When vacuuming, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which is a uniquely designed mechanical air filter that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander and dust mites. When you finish vacuuming, mop floors to gather any dust or allergens that escaped the vacuum.

2. Control indoor air moisture: Moist air is great for dust mites and mold, both of which are very bad for humans, so do everything you can to maintain healthy levels of indoor air moisture. Dehumidifiers can reduce indoor air moisture and control allergens, but it’s important to take additional steps as

well. When bathing, try to keep a bathroom window open on a slight crack to prevent mold growth. When preparing meals in the kitchen, make use of your exhaust fan. In addition, don’t overwater houseplants, as they can become breeding grounds for mold.

3. Resist synthetic fragrances: A home that smells good tends to feel more pleasant, especially during winter months when windows are closed. But synthetic fragrances, such as those found in detergents and air fresheners, may be providing that welcoming scent at a heavy cost to a home’s inhabitants. Such fragrances may be emitting various chemicals, including volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air, affecting indoor air quality and possibly even human health. When buying laundry products, look for those that are fragrance-free, also choosing home cleaning products that do not include any artificial fragrances.

Indoor air quality tends to suffer in colder months, when windows are closed and doors are open only briefly. But homeowners can take a handful of simple yet effective steps to ensure the air in their homes is healthy all year long.

Mopping after vacuuming can remove any lingering allergens and improve indoor air quality.

It takes a Community Imagine a place where children spend time with

positive teen and adult role models, are exposed to theater and art, gain confidence and self-esteem, experience positive peer interactions and make new friends. Imagine different generations coming together to enjoy a hot meal and conversation. Imagine a community coming together to make these programs a reality. Seventeen years ago, church and community members saw a need for programs like these and responded with the LeRoy Christian Community Project.

LCCP’s free After School Program currently supports over 40 children and families from many different walks of life. It is open to children in grades 1-6 and operates Monday-Friday from 3-5 pm. The organization’s Teen Drop-In Center meets from 5-7pm the first Tuesday of the month and is open to teens in grades 7-12. Many of the teens also volunteer with the After School Program.

Over the years, LCCP has expanded to include additional programs:

The Backpack Club is a food assistance program to help families provide meals for their children on weekends. Backpacks are filled with kid-friendly food that children can prepare themselves. Each child in the family receives 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items, 2 dinner items and snacks. This year the Backpack Club has 25 families (with over 70 children) receiving support.

“Mommy and Me Playgroup” is geared for moms and children aged newborn to kindergarten. The group meets on 1st and 3rd Fridays at the LeRoy Village Fitness for lunch and playtime. An average of 10 moms and 25 kids attend each week.

Caregiver Connection meets the third Tuesday of each month for a time of sharing and support for those who serve as caregiver to a loved one. Topics include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, grief and loss, financial hardships, dealing with stress, and caring for oneself while being a caregiver.

Grace’s Kitchen is a free meal program offered Tuesday evenings from 5 pm -7 pm at the Masonic Community Center. The program is run by Selby Davis and an amazing crew of volunteers. Each week, Grace’s Kitchen serves an average of 135 meals. It is a great time of food, fun and fellowship.

Summer Day Camp runs Monday - Friday from 8am - 4pm for seven weeks. Each week has a different theme, such as sports, carnival or safari; activities include arts and crafts, games, and field trips. The program is fee based, but fees are kept as

low as possible so that all children can have the opportunity to attend. A local foundation has provided scholarships in the past.

In addition to fundraisers, donations and grants, LCCP is partially funded by local churches. Unfortunately, its programs are in jeopardy, due to a recent loss in grant funding and resulting budget deficit. Led by Executive Director Susan Wakefield and Assistant Director Jana Pritchett, the nonprofit organization launched Lift LCCP, a capital campaign to raise $75,000 to support the programs that they offer to the LeRoy community.

Here are examples of how your tax deductible donation can help: • $100 will sponsor a child in the After School

Program for one month. • $100 will provide dinner for 75 people at

Grace’s Kitchen. • $100 will provide a backpack for a family of

5 for one month.

For more information, or to make a donation online, visit: www.leroychristiancommunityproject.org,

or www.facebook.com/leroylccp. Or contact LCCP at (585) 768-7540,

or via e-mail at [email protected]. Donations may be mailed to at 7 E. Main St., LeRoy, 14482.

INSULATED SIDING CAN

KEEP YOUR HEAT W HERE IT

BELONGS -- INSIDE!

If you w ere hit by the “ polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it w as a good reminder that the best w ay to stay w arm w as to dress in layers.

The same is true for houses. Today’s homeow ners looking for w ays to improve their home’s energy performance are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding w ith rigid foam insulation that is laminated or permanently attached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer to w ard off the cold.

M ost exter ior w alls have insulation in betw een the w all studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, w hich are poor insulators. This is called “ thermal br idging.” Insulated siding improves energy effic iency by reduc ing thermal bridging. Like a blanket, it is continuous insulation over the studs, w hich helps homes stay w arm in w inter and cool in summer.

Designed to reach higher levels of r igidity, stability and thermal resistance -- “ R-value” -- insulated siding is subjec t to an array of regulations, standards and third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-effic iency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifies as home insulation. In addition, it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protec tion Agency as a building produc t that can help qualify homes under the Energy Star Qualified Homes Program.

CONSERVE ENERGY THIS W INTER BY CHOOSING THE RIGHT W INDOW S

W inter is upon us, but the w indow hasn’t c losed for homeow ners to keep their heating bills from going through the roof.

While exploring tactics for cutting energy costs, there might be no more critical consideration than w indow s. A home w ith ineffic ient w indow s is almost like a home w ith a hole in the w all -- and installing energy-effic ient w indow s can shave up to 15 percent off heating and cooling bills, according to estimates based on data set forth in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star Savings Estimates (w w w.energystar.gov/w indow s).

Numerous fac tors determine a w indow ’s energy effic iency. W indow s w ith a low er “ U-Factor,” for example, are preferable in colder regions because they allow less heat to escape.

Here are some other tips to find the best w indow s for your home:

• Consider your conservation goals. One homeow ner may simply w ant greater energy effic iency. Another may be draw n to “ passive” or “ net zero” building practices -- w hose requirements are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures w ith incredibly minimal heating and cooling systems.

• Don’t sacrifice beauty for efficiency. W indow s should be beautiful, functional, durable and energy effic ient.

• Add w indow treatments. Certain w indow treatments also can help maintain comfortable temperatures in a home.

• Consult an expert. Homeow ners should speak w ith a professional w hen selecting w indow s, to explore and identify solutions for their home and c limate.

STOP COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE FROM GETTING INTO HOM ES TO PREVENT DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE

Eliminate points of entry. Seal entry points around the house. Replace loose mortar and w eather stripping. Install a mesh cover or cap over chimneys and other exposed openings.

Pow er tool safety t ips

Pow er tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improvement projects. But pow er tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not w ithout risk. According to the Work Safe Center, pow er tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Keeping safe is of the utmost priority w hen using pow er tools. Here’s how :

• Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use.

• Keep your tools c lean and in proper operating condition.

• Use the right tool for the job.

• Alw ays w ear eye protection, such as safety glasses or goggles.

• Wear standard cotton or leathe r w ork gloves to protect hands.

• Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs w ith loud pow er tools.

• Don’t use pow er tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials.

• Alw ays check that w ires are kept aw ay from blades.

• M aintain a tight grip on a tool.

• Do not overreach w hen using tools, and maintain balance.

• Pay attention w hen w orking w ith any pow er tool.

• Only use attachments specifically recommended for the pow er tools and ensure proper installation.

• Unplug all pow er tools during breaks and anytime w hen tools are not in use.

• Routinely inspect tools for damage.

• Keep tools stored in secure locations w hen not in use.

Add Little Touches - An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from

an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both

modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvi ous, but as visitors look

around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

BMI Not a Total Picture of Health DEAR DR. ROACH: About seven years ago, my blood pressure was high, and I was overweight and in a stressful job.

I quit the job, my blood pressure went down, and I lost over 40 pounds. I have kept the weight off all these years. I work part time, standing on my feet about 25 hours a week. My doctor has been happy with me. At my last appointment, I was told my BMI is too high and that I am obese.

Where did this “BMI” come from? I am 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weigh 194 pounds. I am a large-framed woman (I delivered 12- pound babies through NATURAL childbirth!). Now I feel like I should forget it and go back to eating what I want, when I want! -- P.S.

ANSWER: BMI, the body mass index, is a way of determining obesity by standardizing weight for people of different heights. It is equal to weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in meters) squared. BMI predicts the development of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even overall mortality rates moderately well. It is certainly not a perfect measurement. Someone whose BMI is obese (over 30) might have very little body fat; he or she might be very muscular or have larger bones than another person of the same height.

Some physicians measure waist circumference, since that looks at abdominal fat, and research shows that using both measurements gives a more complete picture of health.

Personally, I congratulate you for getting and keeping off 40 pounds, and think you made a wise investment in your health by finding a less-stressful job. Your BMI is 31, just in the “obese” range. However, women of your BMI but whose waist circumference is less than 31.5 inches (80cm) have a much lower risk of medical complications later.

By the way, having babies that large does indicate an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes later in life. Your doctor hopefully is checking you periodically. Getting regular exercise and eating a good diet reduces your risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, so please don’t get frustrated by this single, incomplete measure of your health.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last night I washed my face with soap and water. I toweled dry and saw blood dripping from the side of my nose. I figured I must have scrubbed too hard and opened a pore. This pore bled and bled for over an hour before I used styptic powder. That stopped the bleeding instantly. Now I’m afraid to wash that area, as it may start bleeding again. I’m 61. I don’t take any medication except a baby aspirin every night, and Aleve when my arthritis kicks up. Is this common? -- J.R.

ANSWER: No, that isn’t common. It makes me concerned that the pore you think is bleeding actually may be a subtle or early skin condition predisposed to bleeding. The ones I am most concerned about are basal cell and squamous cell cancers. See a dermatologist and get it examined.

Aspirin and naproxen (Aleve) do make bleeding more likely, but I still think you should get it looked at.

Assess your sleeping conditions. Your bedroom should be cool - between

60 and 67 degrees - and should be dark and quiet. Consider using room-

darkening shades, and make sure to ‘power down’ before you go to sleep.

This means turning off TVs, computers or other sources of blue light that

may hurt your sleep. To help block-out extra noise, consider using a fan or

‘white noise’ machines to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Make sure that you go to bed and get up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends. Having a consistent sleep pattern helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle, helping you to sleep better at night. If you have trouble falling asleep within the first 20 minutes or so of going to bed, that’s okay - simply go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. Agonizing over falling asleep will only make it tougher for you to get the rest you need.

Passages rem em bering loved ones

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

CHANNELING POSITIVE ENERGY As the medical community has increasingly come to accept

that there is a spiritual dimension to healing, it has become quite common for physicians to refer patients for religious counseling, particularly to help them cope with grief and terminal illness. This is done in the belief that treating the whole person can bring about better outcomes than those produced by focusing specifically on one area. Research shows that expressions of faith help produce a stronger immune system and cut the severity of depression. Clearly, if the mind rules the body, it would seem to be of great benefit to suffuse the mind with faith. A positive attitude fostered by a belief in something greater than ourselves is empowering.

Adding elements that serve to represent the faith of the deceased will individualize the commemoration. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to assure that your requests are honored. We will assist you with all of your planning needs. Reach us today at (585) 346-5401 . We invite you to tour tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY .

Did you know ?

Fitness boot camp classes are grow ing in popularity at fitness facilities across the country. This t ype of group physical training, w hich may take place indoors or outside, employs personal trainers and sometimes former military personnel as instructors. The regimen is designed to build strength and endurance through i ntense group exercise intervals. Classes may run 30 minutes to one hour in length. M any classes include some form of fast-paced cardiovascular exercise, along w ith a series of strength-training elements, like using dumbbells or the resistance of one’s ow n body w eight. Flexibility exercises or stretching may be part of the classes, borrow ing ele ments from yoga and Pilates. Although the boot camp class gets its name from military training drills, it’s not abou t being yelled at or receiving negative reinforcement from instructors. M any people enjoy these c lasses because they allo w s partic ipants to compete against one another, competition that many people feel encourages them to do theirbest.

Why does anyone ever lie? The confidence man and other unscrupulous people tell lies to dupe their victims. Others may lie because the truth could be an admission of guilt. Still others lie because they do not want to hurt someone else’s feelings. Where telling the truth could mean humiliation and punishment, it takes character to avoid resorting to a lie.

We hate the ones to whom we have to lie because they’re in a position to force us to do something for which we hate ourselves. Our goal should be to live in such a way as to eliminate any situation where a lie is ever necessary.

Thoughtful families select a funeral director as they do a doctor or attorney. We would welcome a “get-acquainted” visit by you, in our office or in your home. Call us to schedule an appointment.
