Your Neighbor as Yourself
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “you shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first command-
ment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself” [Matthew 22:37]
A professional football player was interviewed about the threat of brain injury in the game. He countered
with a question to the woman: “Tell me, do you love your husband?” “I certainly do,” she answered, “Why
do you ask?” “Because I love football,” he said, “and I would do anything to be able to play anytime.”
When that interview was conducted, the Super Bowl was only about 30 games old. This month of February,
Super Bowl LIV will be held. To be present for the pageantry costs a lot of money, if you can get a ticket to
go. Millions will view the event, making it a premium advertising target. This year, there is a pregame gala,
with music and hype beginning about 2 in the afternoon. The stars for that part of the event aren’t people you
would normally associate with the game. They are kind of like a cheerleading pregame assembly for your
High School team, only more.
Hours later, the kickoff itself comes after pregame analysis and interviews with participants. And after the
flyover that accompanies the national anthem and after the coin flip. The amount of play of the actual game
in the first half is 30 minutes. Then comes the half-time, with VERY brief analysis of the first half, then the
half-time show. The half-time show lasts long as the performers care to cavort; how you gonna stop ‘em?
Then the last 30 minutes of the game completes the competition… unless there’s overtime. Then the trophy is
awarded, then the locker room interviews, and then post-game analysis.
The statement by the pro football player was “I love football”, not “I love the Super Bowl.” Real sweat and
pain, real ambition and commitment make a football player real, pro or not. Teammates aim at a common
goal one game at a time, with the team working best as one. When someone fails, you huddle up, pat ‘im on
the back, and figure out how to support him. The focus is on something outside yourself, grinding self-
sacrifice as the element itself. During the actual game, each player must set aside critique of other’s play to
do his own work. Teams that don’t extend such care don’t stay teams very long, and rarely succeed. To gath-
er together against all resistance, to advance despite setbacks demands all you’ve got.
When you adjust rules for safety and officiating, those changes may threaten the game itself. Which brings us
back to the interview: a football player who loves football, a team effort. To dump love as an expression of
care for another “as yourself”, is to lose love altogether. This Valentine’s month, consider your neighbors:
your spouse, your children, your friends. Share with them the forgiveness of sins you have from Christ Jesus,
and pass His love along. ~ Peace, Pastor Nate

Thank you Dear Living Word Lutheran Church,
Thank you very much for your generous donation of the beautiful quilts to Someplace Safe. No doubt they will
bring much comfort and warth to people who are in need in our community. We provide assistance to women, men
and children who have been victims of crime or abuse.
Thank you for the gift of your time and talent. Your gift is much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Susan Keehn
Dear Living Word Lutheran Church,
Please accept our deepest gratitude for your gift to Mount Carmel. We appreciate your generosity. Your invest-
ment means that each person who comes to Mount Carmel experiences God’s love and grace through rest, spiritual
renewal and recreation. Because of faithful donors like you: Those who are weary find their strength renewed, Dis-
connected families have time to play and pray together, and Those who are grieving find hope in Jesus resurrection.
In Christ,
Pastor Jana Swenson
Dear Partners in Mission,
Thank you again to the outreach witness of this Great Commission driven congregation.
It is important to note that some 700,000 refugees from S. Sudan fled across the border into Ethiopia. Many more
are in other countries adjacent to S. Sudan. This does give the Ethiopia Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus oppor-
tunity for witness to these desperate people. We are in communication the leaders of EECMY and Tabor as to how
we might in some small way support that witness.
Thank you again for your support
In Christ,
Dear Living Word Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your support of East European Mission Network Ministries, it is greatly appreciated and will help
us to continue to reach the millions of Spiritual Orphans after more than three generations of communist imposed
atheism. Because of this, there are no grandmothers and grandfathers, no mothers and fathers..on one that can share
their faith with the current generation.
Your congregation IS THE GENERATION OF FAITH, to these spiritual orphans and we praise God for your con-
tinues partnership.
In His Service,
Thank you to everyone that helped make our First 3 Days of Prayer a Success.
We had 12 adults come to pray with our youth on Wednesday, January 8.
We also posted a live Facebook event and had 9 others praying with us from home.

Annual Meeting
Annual Meeting
LWLC Annual Meeting was held on
Sunday, January 26 following the 9am
service. Pastor Nate provided opening
devotion, Gaylen Lerohl, LWLC Council
President, provided comments which was
followed by fellowship and a pot luck.
Thank to everyone that participated.
Matthew describes Jesus’ three-year ministry to the people of Israel. He goes to great lengths to show that Jesus
fulfilled the prophecies of the Torah, prophecies that God would send a Messiah to restore the broken covenant
with his people. He describes Jesus as the descendent of Abraham and David, a true Israelite. His story mirrors the
story of Israel and ends with His death and resurrection, His claim to be the final sacrifice, the reconciliation of the
nation prophesied seven hundred years prior.
At dawn of the first day of the week after the Sabbath when Jesus was executed, Mary and Mary Magdalene went
to the tomb. They witnessed an earthquake and saw an angel roll back the stone from the tomb. Sitting on the
stone, he told the women Jesus was risen and they should go and tell the news to the disciples. Jesus met the wom-
en on the road, comforted them and directed them to tell His disciples to meet Him in Galilee. There he gave the
disciples final instructions, “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disci-
ples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
“Go and make disciples!” This is our directive too. So, what are these disciples? Simply, followers or students
of a master or teacher. The Gospels describe Jesus choosing twelve disciples early in his ministry. They were blue
collar guys – some fishermen, a tax collector – no Bible scholars, theologians or priests. Common uneducated men
of the people - but they left their occupations, families and life to go on the road with Jesus. For three years they
walked with Him learning as they went, assisting Jesus and sharing their knowledge of the good news with the
crowds hungry for Jesus’ teaching.
We are directed to do likewise but are unnerved by the thought of going out and evangelizing strangers, wonder-
ing if we will say the right thing. Frightening for most of us, frightening enough to prevent us from sharing the
news that Jesus the Christ has made the sacrifice, has done the work!
Pastor Greg and Susan Finke have looked with “new eyes” at the Gospels and have regained an understanding of
how we can integrate discipling into our lives. They encourage learning Jesus’ methods and lessons as presented in
the Gospels, refreshingly simple insights to discipling we can apply to our lives.
Our self-assessment has identified “outreach” as a weakness of our congregation. We can adopt the Finkes’ meth-
ods to address the weakness. Theirs’ is not a Bible study or complex program to develop evangelists. It simply
helps us discern Jesus’ methods and teachings about the Kingdom as recorded in the Gospels. We will invite inter-
ested members to intentionally apply the lessons from the gospels and share, when appropriate, with friends and
acquaintances who could benefit from hearing our stories of the good news. Making disciples one at a time!
