Does your state of mind affect your ability

to carry out intentions? The latest

evidence suggests that the emotional state

of both sender and receiver is important!

Some intriguing recent studies of healing,c a rried out by Gary Schwartz at theU n i ve rsity of A ri zona and his colleague,

B e ve rly Rubik, a biophysicist and fo u n d i n gd i rector of the Center for Frontier Sciences atTemple Unive rs i t y, P h i l a d e l p h i a , h ave examinedwhether the healer’s own state affects the successof healing. Th ey used as their ‘ p a t i e n t ’ E. colib a c t e ria that had been seve re ly stressed by asudden blast of heat.

The scientists assembled 14 pra c t i t i o n e rs ofR e i k i , a Japanese fo rm of healing, and aske dthem to attempt to ‘ h e a l ’ the bacteria usings t a n d a rd Reiki tre a t m e n t . Each practitioner wa sa s ked to heal three diffe rent samples. To countup the number of bacteria that survive d ,scientists made use of equipment with anautomated counter.

I n i t i a l ly, it ap p e a red that the Reikip ra c t i t i o n e rs made no diffe rence to the ove ra l ls u r v i val of the viable bacteri a . H o we ve r, on closerlook the scientists discove red that they we rem o re successful on certain days than on others .I n d e e d , on some day s , S c h wartz discove re d , t h eb a c t e ria we re actually worse off after the samplehad been exposed to healing. The healersap p e a red to be having a positive effect on somed ays and a deleterious one on others . S c h wa r t zand Rubik wo n d e red whether this spotty tra c kre c o rd might have something to do with theh e a l e rs ’ own states of wellbeing on the days theyc a rried out the healing.

The scientists decided to assess the healers ,using a psychological test called the A ri zo n aI n t eg ra t i ve Outcomes Scale (AIOS). AIOS is an

i n g e n i o u s ly simple visual way to assess a pers o n ’sg l o b a l — s p i ri t u a l , s o c i a l , m e n t a l , e m o t i o n a l , a n dp hy s i c a l — wellbeing during the previous 24h o u rs and the previous month. The test is asimple hori zontal line with the wo rds ‘ wo rst yo uh ave ever been’ on the left and ‘best you havee ver been’ on the ri g h t . The patients are told tore flect on their general sense of we l l b e i n g ,‘taking into account your phy s i c a l , m e n t a l ,e m o t i o n a l , s o c i a l , and spiritual condition’ o ve rthe past 24 hours . Th ey mark a point on the linewith an X that, in their view, re p resents theiro ve rall sense of wellbeing for the past 24 hours ,

Psychologist Iris Bell, one of Schwa r t z ’scolleagues at the Unive rsity of A ri zo n a , c re a t e dAIOS as a simple vehicle for patients to assesstheir own global wellbeing with somethingbesides a report of physical symptoms. In anumber of studies, AIOS was found to be auseful tool for gauging ove rall levels of phy s i c a l ,m e n t a l , and emotional health.

In the next batch of studies, Schwartz andRubik asked the Reiki healers to assess themselveson the AIOS scale before and after they’d carriedout the Reiki. After analyzing the data, thescientists discovered an important trend.The timeswhen the healers felt really well in themselvescorrelated with the sessions in which they had abeneficial effect on the bacteria—the counts inthe healed bacteria were higher than those of theheat-shocked controls. The days when the healersscored lower on the AIOS test were also the dayson which they had a deleterious effect on thebacteria, and killed off more bacteria than died inthe controls. The practitioner’s own wellbeing was anessential aspect of successful healing.

Schwartz and Rubik decided to see if the AIOStest applied to other types of healers as well. Theyrecruited a large group of patients who were to behealed by a number of practitioners of Johrei,

another form of Japanese healing. Before and afterthe healing sessions, both patients andpractitioners were asked to fill out both AIOS anda questionnaire to assess the emotional state ofmind before and after the healing.

Schwartz and Brooks compared the AIOS testsof both the healers and those they’d healed, anddiscovered another interesting effect. Althoughthe patients evidenced the greatest change in thetests before and after the test, the healers also feltbetter in every way after they’d performed thehealing. The act of healing, and perhaps thehealing context, was itself healing. Giving was asgood for the sender as the receiver. Healing someonehealed the healer.1

Two prayer studies, one of cardiac patients andthe other of infertile women, have discoveredpositive effects only when those who pray for thepatients have themselves been prayed for.2

i n t e n t i o n ’ sent to cancer patients by their spouses.H e rcolleague Je rome Stone assembled a training pro g ra mfor the study. Stone believed that his senders neededto learn how to generate compassion or empathy fo rtheir partners , with a technique based larg e ly on theTonglen Buddhist idea of ‘giving and re c e i v i n g ’ .

These practices would train the partner to deve l o pa true understanding of the suffe ring of another, t ot a ke on the suffe ring without being bu rdened by itand to tra n s fo rm it through the process of healing.D e veloping true empathy helps dissolve theb o u n d a ries and sense of self between the sender andre c e i ve r. Rollin McCra t y, d i rector of HeartMath, has fo u n dthat a steady (or what they called ‘ c o h e rent’) va ri a t i o nin heart beat is more like ly with ‘ p o s i t i ve’—loving ora l t ruistic—thoughts and that this ‘ c o h e re n c e ’ i sq u i c k ly picked up by the bra i n , which soon pulses ins y n c h ro ny. 1

R e s e a rch shows that touch or even focus on theheart or compassionate feelings for the other is ap o werful means of causing bra i n wave entra i n m e n tb e t ween people. When two people touch wh i l efocusing loving thoughts on their hearts, t h e‘ c o h e re n t ’ heart rhythms of one can entrain the bra i nof the other.

B e fo re you set your intention, it may be importantto fo rm an empathetic connection with the object ofyour intention.

Establish connectionFi rst try it out on someone with whom you alre a dyh ave a strong bond—a partner, a child, a sibl i n g , adear fri e n d .! With someone you don’t know, exchange an object

or photograp h .! Get to know the pers o n . Go for a walk with him

or meet him fi rs t .! Spent half an hour meditating together fi rs t .! Ask the person to be open to receiving yo u r

intention when you are sending it.If you are sending an intention to something non-

human or inanimate, you can also establish somec o n n e c t i o n . Find out all you can about the object ofyour intentions—whether a plant, an animal or aninanimate object. Place it near you for a peri o db e fo re sending your intention. It goes without say i n gthat you should be nice to it—even if ‘ i t ’ is yo u rcomputer or photocopier.

Be compassionateTo encourage a sense of unive rsal compassion duri n gyour intention session:

! Focus your attention to your heart, as though yo ua re sending light to it. O b s e r ve the light spre a d i n gf rom your heart to the rest of your body. Send aloving thought, i e , ‘ M ay I be well and free fro ms u ffe ri n g .’

! On the out bre a t h , imagine a white light ra d i a t i n go u t wa rd from your heart. As you do, t h i n k : ‘ Iap p reciate the kindnesses and love of all livingc re a t u re s . D u ring your intention, if you are sending healingto someone, fi rst try to put yo u rself in his situation.Imagine what it is like to be him and to be faced withhis current cri s i s . Try to feel and have empathy fo ryour re c e i ve r ’s suffe ri n g .Ask yo u rself how yo u ’d fe e lif you we re suffe ring in this manner and how yo u ’dmost want to be healed.

In our earlier Lesson# we discovered that most.masters/ of intention undergo a loosening ofthe ego! But what does a state of surrender doto the brain?

Most people assume that intention is a stro n g‘ o o m p h ’ , or motiva t i o n , t h rough which yo up roject your thoughts to another pers o n

to ensure that your wishes are carried out. Ic o n s i d e red it similar to the intense projected thoughtsI have when witnessing one of my children perfo rmin publ i c.When my sporty youngest plays netball, a l lof my thoughts are ri veted on the ball, p a r t i c u l a rlywhen she gets hold of it, as if I am willing it to flyinside the net. When my eldest daughter onceap p e a red in a camp solo, I found myself mentally atone with her, willing her to hit the tough high noteson key.

To address exactly how intention wo rk s , I re c e n t lystudied the ‘ m a s t e rs ’ of intention: p ra c t i t i o n e rs ofancient disciplines—Buddhism, Q i go n g , s h a m a n i s m ,h e a l i n g — who had been trained to perfo rme x t ra o rd i n a ry acts through their thoughts andwo rked out the common denominators they share d .

I n i t i a l ly, m a ny healers experience a heightening oftheir cognitive pro c e s s e s , but most soon reach a pointwhen inner chatter ceases, and they experience afalling away of all sensation but pure image (Living TheField Lesson Thirty-two) . The focusing seems to dissolvetheir own boundari e s . Th ey suddenly become awa reof the inner wo rkings of the patient’s body andu l t i m a t e ly have a sense of being engulfed by him.

M a ny achieve this state by using the patient as the

object of meditation. D r. Judith Swa c k , m i n d / b o dyhealer who has developed her own holisticp s y c h o t h e rapy system, d e s c ri b e s , “I look dire c t ly atthe client and focus all of my senses fo r wa rd towa rdthe client and enter a re c e p t i ve state wh e re I payi n t e rnal attention to any subtle info rmation andi m p ression coming in like a kind of ra d a r.” M a nyother healers likewise enter an altered state, s i m p ly by‘listening to the patient’—“audibly or otherwise.”“ Just thinking of the need to help someone,”w rote Dr.P i e d i l a t o ,“slows the blood in my ve i n s .”

But was loosening the tight hold of the egoimportant in all types of intention? Inve s t i g a t o rs atthe Behav i o ral Neurology Pro g ram and RotmanR e s e a rch Institute at the Unive rsity of To ro n t oattempted to replicate the wo rk of the Pri n c e t o nPEAR lab using random event genera t o rs , but withone important twist: t h ey ’d enlisted seve ral patientswith frontal-lobe damage. The patients who hads u ffe red right frontal-lobe damage, which like lya ffected their ability to focus and maintain attention,had no effect on the machines. The only person toh ave greater than normal effect was a volunteer witha damaged left frontal lobe but whose right fro n t a llobe was intact. The inve s t i g a t o rs speculated that thevo l u n t e e r ’s particular handicap like ly gave him areduced sense of self, but a normal state of attention.Achieving a state of a reduced self-awa re n e s s — ad i fficult state for an ord i n a ry person to achieve —might allow for greater effects of intention on them a c h i n e s . 1

Most studies of meditation# mediumship and healing show that people successful at intention imagine themselves and the healee

as one with the universe!

! Frame your intention# state it clearly and then let go of the outcome!

! If you are trying to heal someone or send an intention to someone else# once you have achieved peak attention# turn your

attention to the subject! Imagine merging with him or her! Try to imagine your mind literally at one with his or her mind and

body!

! Look at your subject 2or a photograph of him or her-!

! Focus all your attention toward your subject!

! Begin to pay internal attention to any senses or impressions coming to you! Remember: they won/t arrive logically or as a

whole# but be fleeting and impressionistic# much like the information you receive through remote viewing 2see Frontier

! State your intention clearly and make it specific!

! Close your internal meditation with a request and then move your own ego aside! Remember: this .power/ does not originate

experts on altered states of consciousness, d i s c o ve re dthat during these altered states, the body natura l ly‘switches off’ certain neural connections, including ana rea near the back of the brain that constantlycalculates a pers o n ’s spatial ori e n t a t i o n , the sense ofwh e re one’s body ends and the external wo rld beg i n s .D u ring a tra n s p e rsonal or transcendent experi e n c e ,this region becomes inactive : the boundary in therelationship between the self and the other bl u r; yo uno longer know wh e re you end and someone elseb eg i n s .

This was also demonstrated in a study of Ti b e t a nm o n k s .2 Moments of meditative experience showe dup as more activity in the bra i n ’s frontal lobes withless activity in the parietal lobes. Meditation and

other altered states affected the temporal lobes, wh i c hhouse the amy g d a l a , a cluster of cells re s p o n s i ble fo rthe sense of whether we like or dislike what wep e rc e i ve . Our ‘sense of self’ is housed in the tempora llobe of the left hemisphere . To function norm a l ly,both temporal lobes must wo rk in harm o ny.S t i mulation of the temporal lobes or disorder in themm ay create fa m i l i a rity or stra n g e n e s s — c o m m o nfe a t u res of a transcendent experi e n c e . The latest evidence of direct0mental0influence0on0living0systems research dem0onstrates that when one person is trainedto send intention to another# many of therecipient/s physiological responses willmirror the sender/s!

Psychologists Mari lyn Schlitz and DeanRadin of the Institute of Noetic Scienceswanted to find out what happens in the

b o dy of the re c e i ver when a sender sends outan intention. Th ey decided to seek out couplesin which one partner was suffe ring fro mc a n c e r.

One of their colleagues, Je rome Stone, anu rse and practicing Buddhist, w rote a tra i n i n gm a nual for the couples after having analy zed anumber of healers and distilled their commonp ra c t i c e s .

Radin divided the couples into three gro u p s .The fi rst group (the ‘ t rained group’) was tou n d e rgo Stone’s tra i n i n g , p ra c t i c ecompassionate intention daily for thre emonths and then carry out the test. The secondg roup (called the ‘ wait group’) was to carry outthe test fi rst and then have the tra i n i n g . The 18h e a l t hy couples composing the third gro u p(the control group) we re to have no training ata l l , but we re simply to undergo the test.

With all three gro u p s , the member of thecouple with the cancer (or one of thedesignated partners in the control group) wa sa s ked to sit in a black reclining chair placed ina one-ton, s o l i d - s t e e l , d o u bl e - wa l l e d ,e l e c t ro m a g n e t i c a l ly shielded enclosure . E a c hinhabitant was fitted to an array of medicalg a d g e t ry to measure bra i n wave s , h e a r t b e a t ,b reathing ra t e , skin conductance andp e ri p h e ral blood fl o w. A video camera stoodd i s c re e t ly in the corn e r.

Some 20 meters away, the other partner wa sseated in the dark , attached to the samemedical equipment as his or her partner,s t a ring at a small, blank television scre e n .Wh e n e ver the image of the partner in theshielded room abru p t ly flashed onto the T Vs c re e n , the other member of the couple was tosend a compassionate intention to his or herpartner for 10 seconds.

Radin then compiled all the phy s i o l o g i c a ldata from the three gro u p s , and studied theresults between partners and as gro u pcomposite ave ra g e s . Each phy s i o l o g i c a lresponse offe red fascinating info rmation as tothe effect of intention on the re c e i ve r.

For instance, in the case of measuring bl o o dflow to the extre m i t i e s , in eve ry gro u p , t h e

Jerome Stone/s compassionate0intention programThe first component of Jerome Stone/s program involved teaching the sender how to focus and concentrate# as in

meditation# to create a high degree of sustained attention! The scientific evidence indicates that meditation establishes

more coherent brainwaves: at least $* studies show that EEG synchronization occurs between the four regions of the

brain during meditation! Other studies of meditation have shown that it creates more coherent biophoton emissions"

and# in general# aids healing!

Stone also believed that his senders needed to learn how to generate compassion or empathy for their partners# and

used a technique based largely on the Tonglen Buddhist idea of .giving and receiving/! This practice would train the

partner in how to develop a true understanding of the suffering of another# to take on the suffering without being

burdened by it# and to transform it through the process of sending healing!

Developing true empathy would also help to dissolve the boundaries and sense of self between the sender and

receiver! Positive# loving thoughts also had positive physiological effects! Rollin McCraty/s research at the Institute of

HeartMath in Boulder Creek# California# showed that a steady 2or# as they called it# .coherent/- variation in heartbeat was

more likely with .positive/5loving or altruistic5thoughts and that this .coherence/ was quickly picked up by the brain#

which soon pulsed in synchrony and was evidenced by improved cognitive performance!$

After Stone instructed the partners in simple techniques of meditation# he also taught them how to be compassionate

when carrying out intention!

The final aspect of Stone/s training involved instilling belief and confidence in both senders and receivers! Stone had

discovered evidence in both the healing and parapsychological literature that believing in the process assists in the

success of psychic processes such as extrasensory perception 2ESP-# which# like intention# involve transferring

.information/ across distances!)

s e n d e r ’s skin conductance increased twoseconds after seeing the partner’s image, a n dthe re c e i ver re c o rded a similar arousal a half-second after the image had fl a s h e d .F u r t h e rm o re , the response persisted for seve nseconds after the stimu l u s .

The re c e i ver clearly ap p e a red to beresponding to intention—indeed, a l m o s ti n s t a n t a n e o u s ly. In fa c t , the re c e i ve r ’s re s p o n s eo c c u rred at least one second faster than wo u l dh ave been possible for the sender to havec o n s c i o u s ly fo rmulated an intention. Radin wa snot sure whether this meant that the re c e i ve rhad had a premonition of the intention. Or itmight simply have re flected the turgid natureof the skin-conductance re s p o n s e ; the re c e i ve rwas like ly responding in his or her extre m i t i e sto info rmation sent by the sender’s centra ln e r vous system, which would have reacted tothe initial stimulation of the image on themonitor far more quickly than the electri c a limpulses sent to the fi n g e r t i p s .

N e ve r t h e l e s s , in Radin’s view, the couples’t wo skin-conductance responses we re tra c k i n geach other, albeit slightly out of phase.

A similar situation was seen with the heartra t e . The sender’s heart rate increased fi veseconds after the stimulus prompt to send thei n t e n t i o n — which was consistent with thep hysical response that occurs in the bodyd u ring the process of making some sort ofmental effo r t . But an identical increase tookplace in the re c e i ve r, which would not hap p e no rd i n a ri ly if he or she we re simply resting in are c l i n e r.

Blood flow fo l l o wed a similar pattern .Wh e n e ver we experience something thats t i mulates us, the vascular netwo rk in oure x t remities constricts slightly to maximizeblood flow to the central core of the body. I nR a d i n ’s study, this phenomenon occurred in

the sender and was soon imitated in the bodyof the re c e i ve r.

As for re s p i ra t i o n , on ave ra g e , wh e n e ver thes t i mulus image ap p e a re d , the senderi m m e d i a t e ly inhaled sharp ly and expelled theair 15 seconds later. This re s p i ra t o ry re s p o n s ere s e m bles that of someone about to steadyt h e m s e l ves for the task at hand.

In this case, Radin witnessed a diffe re n tresponse in the re c e i ve r. One fascinating example of directedintention is the ability of energies5yours orenergy in open space5to be capturedforever on film!

William Ti l l e r, S t a n fo rd Unive rs i t yprofessor emeritus of materials science,became particularly intrigued by the

power of thought when he was approached by aYugoslav named Stanislav Ojack, who claimed tohave a strange effect on photographic film.

Ojack showed Tiller a batch of pictures he’dt a ken with his Ko d a k , using ord i n a ry fi l m .Although the camera had been mounted on atripod and the pictures had been taken by a two-foot-long shutter-release gadget, in every example,the photos had portions in sharp focus. In otheri n s t a n c e s , objects we re bl u rred and eve ntransparent, so that you could see objects behindthem that should have been obscured from view.The camera and the film had been examined byKodak specialists, but had been found to be insound working order.

The same effects occurred with other people'scameras, so long as Ojack carried the camera nextto his body for several days before he beganshooting. He claimed that whenever he took apicture while experiencing certain feelings in hisupper back and back of the neck—around thefourth thoracic and seventh cervical vertebrae—some weird anomalous image would appear in thephotograph, usually by making people in thefo reg round tra n s p a re n t . The most noticeabl eimages occurred during a spiritual or meaningfulevent such as at a sacred shrine or a particularlyinvolving lecture on metaphysics.

Ojack was of the Baha’i faith and carried outdaily prayer. In his earlier examples, the photoshad seemed to change whenever he’d sent anintention to ‘reveal God’s universe’.

Tiller had been intrigued enough to set up anexperiment. He used Stan’s Kodak camera and anequivalent Minolta, filled them both with identicalKodak film, mounted them on a tripod speciallybuilt to hold them both and employed the sameshutter release with the same color film in bothinstances. The single difference was allowing Stanproximity to the Kodak.

Although Stan was never allowed to touch thefilm, Tiller asked him to ‘sensitize’ his Kodakcamera by keeping it close to his body for severaldays. The Minolta, which was to be the control,

would be kept apart from Stan at all times. Hethen asked Stan to hold an intention to ‘revealGod’s universe’ while Tiller snapped photos ofseveral locales. Afterward, he asked the Kodakorganization to develop both sets of film, andthen compared the two.

The film that came back was quiteextraordinary.The ‘sensitized’ photos had the samestrange images as the ones Stan had initiallybrought to him. In many of the photos taken withthe ‘sensitized’ camera, the images of people in thep i c t u re ap p e a red partially tra n s p a rent ortranslucent. In one, for instance, a picture of agroup on a stage, a man standing in front of ablackboard was so completely transparent that theblackboard was entirely visible ‘through’ him. Lightappeared to emanate from a woman and toconnect with the others on the stage.

The photos of the same people taken with theu n s e n s i t i zed camera ap p e a red as you wo u l dexpect, with the blackboard obscured by theirbodies, as would occur by normal vision. Evenmore extraordinary, the sensitized camera was ableto take clear and distinguishable photos of theinside of the Stanford church with its lens cap stillon.1

Tiller had puzzled about the physics of howthis might be possible. He was beginning to thinkthat some kinds of radiation exist in nature thatcan travel through materials that are opaque tov i s i ble light.He began referring to them as ‘subtle’ energy.

Whatever unknown quality was inherent inStan’s energy field, his emanations could somehowbe detected and imprinted by the film in thesensitized camera. It seemed to Tiller that, in someway, Stan’s intention was so powerful that it couldbe captured on film.

The more Tiller investigated Stan, the more he’db egun to believe that something in humanthought had the power to alter the ve rymolecular bonds of matter he thought he so wellu n d e rs t o o d . Tiller suspected that Ojack wa s‘tuning’ in to the Zero Point Field or, moreprecisely, what he called the ‘vacuum’—exactly theterritory he believed these subtle energies mightoccupy.

meeting a healer named Cui Xin Zhi in southernChina and learning from him a form of Qigongmovements, which she practiced religiously fort wo hours twice a day, she was having apsychokinetic effect around her house. “Afterabout a month, astonishing events happened:metal objects around the house wo u l dspontaneously be displaced, the screen of mymobile phone would turn blank, my automaticwatch would function erratically, a tape recorderwould turn itself on, t ransmitting garbl e dmessages of unknown origin, and lights wouldswitch on and off by themselves.”

When she contacted her Qigong master, hecongratulated her and said that her Qigongpractice was having an effect. When the mastercame to visit her, she was astonished by some ofthe photographs she took of him, which showed“unexplainable phenomena”. In one series ofphotos of Cui kneeling in front of a Buddha, he’dbecome almost entirely transparent in the last offour photos.

Although Pat’s Qigong master had neve rencountered this phenomenon before, he believedthat through her practice of Qigong, she wasaccessing innate, hitherto unrealized abilities. Bypracticing Qigong, he told her, she energized theflow of qi in her body. As focused intention is thesecret to accessing the power, something in theintention to take a photograph imprinted themind’s will on the photo.

That same year, when Cui came to visit Pat’sfamily in Southern Italy, she photographed himshowing her how to ‘collect energy’ from the seaand moonlight. When she developed the film,“extraordinary sparks of light” appeared in thepictures taken that evening. She also discovered

that the flash of her camera had stopped working.Pat believed that her teacher had wh a t

appeared to be a powerful magnetic field, whichaffected electronic equipment. “I learned to carrylots of batteries when I was around Cui, andexpected my tape-recorders and CD players to alsomalfunction.”

Pat also photographed Cui in the act of doinga healing and passing his leg over an injured legof a friend of theirs. The photos showed electricalenergy passing between them.

“These photos suggest that there is some truthto the idea that healing wo rks withelectromagnetic energy. The healer acts as achannel for a much higher, limitless source of thisenergy and transfers it via his hands to thepatient,” says Pat. After the healing, the patient’sknee pain was gone.

Another time, when Pat was visiting Lebanon,she witnessed some ancient ruins from downtownBeirut, discovered during a civil war lasting 17years between the Christians and Muslims. As themoon was full, she pulled out her camera top h o t o g raph the scene over the ru i n s . Th edeveloped photographs showed light in thread-likefilaments of red and gold, pouring out of themoon.

The images brought to mind a visit to the Indians p i ritual master Mother Meera a decade ago , wh e nshe told Pat that our purposes is to re veal our light,which is “in us like a bu d ” . Besides Ojack, a number of individuals claim tobe able to capture ‘orbs’ on film. Many students ofR a m t h a ’s School of Enlightenment in Ye l m ,Washington, claim to regularly photograph orbswhen in the presence of Ramtha, the discarnateentity channeled by J.Z. Knight.

These anomalous images captured in photosappear as balls, flashes or trails of light. In many,if not most, instances, orbs have a perfectly logicalexplanation as a photographic artifact: they arecaused by flash reflection, or dust or droplets ofmoisture in front of the lens of the camera.Because the speck or drop is lying just out of focalrange, the light reflected from the dust or dropletcauses what is known as a ‘circle of confusion’ onthe chip inside the digital camera that records thepictures.As the spec or drop is too close to be infocus, the object spreads out across the chip andshows up as a big blob of light on the film.

Usually, these artifacts appear to be white orgrey, although some are rainbow hued, usuallybecause of refraction or a problem with thecamera lens.

Throwing flour around or spraying dropletsclose to the lens of a digital camera while focusing

on an object in the distance and snapping flashpictures will generally produce a good orb (seebox, above).

Many such orbs appear transparent becausewhat is being photographed is not the droplets orparticles themselves, only the light source. Usually,says the Association for the Scientific Study ofAnomalous Phenomena (ASSAP), faint orbs arethe most transparent.

How important is it to set aside aparticular place to carry out intentions?New scientific evidence suggests thatintentions create a 6linger6 effect which6conditions6 the space to aid futurei n t e n t i o n s !

William Ti l l e r, S t a n fo rd pro fessor emeri t u sof materials science, put intention tothe supreme test through his series of

‘ bl a c k - b ox experi m e n t s ’ , which attempted to‘ c h a rg e ’ this simple, low-tech machine with ahuman intention and used it to affect a chemicalp rocess (see Living The Field Lesson One) .

His experiment rested on the unthinkabl eassumption that thoughts could be imprisoned ina bit of electronic memory and, l a t e r, ‘ re l e a s e d ’ t oa ffect the physical wo rl d . This fanciful idea wo u l dlead to a bizarre experimental re s u l t , o ffe ri n gc o nvincing evidence that there is such a thing asthe right place for carrying out intentions.

Tiller tried out black boxes on a great nu m b e rof subjects, choosing experimental targets thatwould show a genu i n e , m e a s u ra ble change—changing the pH of wa t e r, i n c reasing the activity ofa liver enzyme called alkaline phosphatase (ALP)or speeding up the developmental processes of thef ruit fly.All three experiments we re extra o rd i n a ri lys u c c e s s f u l .1

After three months, the results of Ti l l e r ’s studiesb egan to impro ve ; the more he repeated thee x p e ri m e n t , the stronger and quicker the effe c t s .

Tiller took readings of the air tempera t u re andd i s c o ve red that the tempera t u re ap p e a red to begoing up and down according to a regular rhy t h mor oscillation, dipping and climbing at reg u l a ri n t e r va l s . When he plotted it, he saw that thet e m p e ra t u re change was oscillating at a pre c i s er hy t h m : e ve ry 45 minutes or so, it va ried by some 4 °C. When Tiller then measured the water pH inthe lab,he observed the same phenomenon as with thet e m p e ra t u re : t h e re we re periodic oscillations of atleast one-quarter of a unit on the pH scale, a n dregular dips and peaks in the wa t e r ’s ability toconduct electri c i t y. Conditioning your intention space! Choose a place to carry out your intentions that feels comfortable! Clear away any extraneous items and make

Thus far# we/ve been working on intention as

used by individuals! Now it/s time to bring some

of these ideas into your community!

Assemble a group of your friends who areinterested in trying out some group-intention exercises. Create an intention

space where you will meet each time.As with yourindividual experiments, each member of yourgroup should have a notebook and a calendar.

When you are first starting, note the date andtimes of your intentions. Each intentionexperiment should be carried out after you have‘powered up’ together in your intention space,using the program outlined in Living The FieldLessons Thirty-two to Forty-four.

Depending on the nature of your intention,make one member of the group responsible forresearching figures involving your local accident,weather or crime statistics. For these types ofstatistics, it’s a good idea to get hold of reports forthe last five years in your area and surroundingcommunities so you can make comparisons.

When you meet, decide on a group-intentionstatement. When you are ‘powering up’, visualizeyourselves as a single entity (say, within a giantbubble or any other unifying image). Once youare all in a collective meditative state, have onemember of the group read out the statement.

Meet regularly to send the same intentions.Keep a careful reading of the statistics for onemonth before and several months after you havesent the intentions, and note any changes. Sendthe results to The Intention Experiment website:www.theintentionexperiment.com.

You can even use this program to send healingintentions as a group to one of your members.

During a course of mine at Esalen, one of ourmembers, Ruth, fell and bruised her ribs. She wasdazed and so shaken by the experience that shewas worried about driving home that day. We allsent her healing intentions, and she immediatelyre v i ve d , and felt calm and confident aboutstepping into her car.

This type of approach has even been triedremotely by our Intention Experiment virtualcommunity (www. theintentionexperiment.com).Don Berry, a disabled vet, has an incurable diseasethat has totally fused his spine, from head tosacroiliac. He says he has no spaces between hisspine and so has no movement. “I cannot bend, Icannot turn my head—I am as solid as a rock.”

He asked if a group of people would send anintention at the same time, focusing on allowinghis neck to turn just as a normal person’s would.

Says Don, “It has been documented for years[over a decade] that I have absolutely no neckmovement. Even a few centimeters would beproof; anything in the inches would be a ‘miracle’.As it has been so well documented throughmedical records, there is no cure . . . any improve-ment would have to be attributed to intention ora sudden intervention of God as no one has EVERhad any bone growth decrease.”

Spontaneously, a bunch of readers decided tobegin sending intentions to Don’s neck twice aweek (Thursday and Sundays). Don says he’sstarted to feel better and has begun to keep adiary of his progress.
