Kevin Pearce is a champion snowboarder, sports commentator, motivational speaker, and advocate for those affected by traumatic brain injuries and Down’s Syndrome. At age 18, Kevin soared onto the professional snowboard stage, winning over ten snowboarding competitions all over the world, including four medals at the X Games. While training for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Kevin sustained a traumatic brain injury. His ongoing rehabilitation and training have been inspirational to both the international snowboard community and fans around the world. Kevin is the subject of the 2013 documentary, The Crash Reel. Kevin’s talk will focus on the importance of

family, friends and support in overcoming obstacles. He will also touch on always looking forward to the next opportunity, no matter what life throws in your way.

This session will review specific strategies to support coping with anger or irritability, being positive, and gaining a sense of control over moods and reactions. Practical suggestions will be discussed and survivor input/examples will be incorporated via co-presentation and/or video.

Join us to explore a gentle and accessible yoga and meditation class. A Realistic-Holistic Approach to Pain Management in Brain Injury| Leonard Kamen, Physiatrist, MossRehab

This presentation will focus on a biopsychosocial approach to pain management, with appreciation of the individual nature of traumatic brain injury. It will address the physical and behavioral contributions to pain along with the role of the support system in approaching this chronic condition. Medical and rehabilitation resources for pain management will be discussed.

Aging with a TBI: Know the Risks and Remedies| Amanda Rabinowitz, Project Director, MossRehab Traumatic Brain Injury Model System

Persons with TBI may be at risk for certain medical conditions, re-injury, and social isolation as they age. However, research suggests that much of this risk can be offset with attentive medical care and healthy lifestyle choices. This session will present a summary of the state-of-the-science on aging after TBI, and provide specific recommendations for aging well with brain injury.

Community Health Choices: The New Medicaid Waiver Program for Pennsylvanians who Have a Disability | Amy E. Lowenstein, Supervising Attorney, Pennsylvania Health Law Project

The Community Health Choices (CHC) waiver program made its debut in 2018, beginning in 14 southwestern PA counties, and in 2019 was made available in the five southeastern PA counties. By January 2020, the CHC waiver program will be available in every Pennsylvania county. This presentation will discuss what CHC means for people transitioning from other Office of Long-Term Living Waivers or who have a newly acquired disability, the CHC evaluation

process, and important information for individuals with brain injuries and their families to know about accessing brain injury services and supports through CHC.

Tai Chi Chuan (Tai Chi/Taiji) is a practice that integrates martial arts movements with Qi (pronounced Chee), circulation, breathing, and stretching techniques. Dr. Silverman will show us how Tai Chi is capable of healing, rejuvenating, and prolonging life.

Nutrition has an enormous impact on our overall health and is a key tool to help the brain heal and function at its highest capacity. This presentation will discuss some educational tools and nutrition facts, along with adaptive cooking techniques, to allow individuals to cook and create healthy meals for themselves.

TBI often leads to poor quality of sleep and daytime fatigue, which interfere with a return to full community participation. This presentation will describe how a TBI causes changes in sleep, as well as the most common sleep problems that result

from TBI. We will provide practical guidance about how to get an accurate diagnosis of a sleep problem and describe some of the most useful treatment strategies that can result in improved restful sleep.

In 2006, Alan Segal’s life was changed forever after experiencing a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Not only did he learn to walk and talk again, but he was inspired to give back to the community that aided his recovery process. The Jazz Sanctuary, a Council on Brain Injury grantee, is committed to bringing music and its healing powers to the brain injury community. The Jazz Sanctuary will close out the conference by playing a short concert.
