Our Sunday School ministry has grown and now is completely out of space with classes meeting in the hallway, sanctuary, offices, auditorium, and “the old basement “ of the Heritage Center We have two classes that need a place to meet and have no rooms

available. We are also blessed to have a new small group min-istry being birthed under the direction of Ricci Arthur, that will likewise expand our reach and growth. As we have sought the Lord in the past He has taken us down several roads and brought us to several crossroads and turned us in the right direction. Once again, as we have been walking through the long range master site planning process and are now be-ginning to narrow the master plan down to one piece of the puzzle, God is taking us exactly where we need

to be. By His divine direction we have secured the services of Don Highlander to be our architect and Impact Stewardship to assist us with our stewardship campaign. What lies ahead as God continues to direct us di-vinely? Faith! As I was reading from Oswald Cham-bers, “My Utmost For his Highest” this morning, this statement spoke loud and clear. “Every time you ven-ture out in the life of faith, you will find something in your common-sense circumstances that flatly contra-

dicts your faith. Common sense is not faith, and faith is not common sense; they stand in relation of the natu-ral and the spiritual. Can you trust Jesus Christ where your common sense cannot trust Him?”

GOD’S GREAT DIRECTIONS… BY FAITH

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to “trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not to our own understanding, in all our ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Over the last 4 to 5 years we have been dili-gently asking the Lord to direct us as we began once

again thinking about expansion of our facilities. We have been very cautious as we sought first, to be-come debt free from the existing building mortgage before we moved forward. As a result, we as a church determined to launch two Sunday morning worship services, which increased our regular Sunday morning attendance by 75 people on average every Sunday morning. The early worship service is near 100% capac-ity and the second service is at 60% plus capacity.

FAIR MINISTRY TO BE AT THE HOCKING COUNTY FAIR

This year’s Fair Ministry comes to a close with our participation in the Hocking County Fair.

We invite you to stop by our church booth at the Hocking County Fair Monday, September 12 through Saturday, September 17. The church booth will be open from Noon to 9:00 p.m. each day. Our booth will be located just inside the front gates. Throughout the week we will be handing out gospel tracts, church information, free popcorn, and will have water, and coffee available. We will also be doing kids face painting and will have a bike giveaway.

The church booth is also a way to promote our

church’s various ministries and upcoming events. If you have a ministry you would like to promote, or

want to volunteer to work at the church booth, con-tact Jason Lipp.

Many thanks to everyone who donated books to the church library. We also want to thank those who donated money. We received $250 and were able to purchase 28 new books and DVDs. The library is open during each church service and

Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Items can be checked out for one month.

SENIOR ADULT TRIP PLANNED

All senior adults age 60 and up are invited to our

next senior adult outing. The group will be touring the State House in Columbus on Saturday, October 1. They will leave from the church at 10:00 a.m. The tour is at noon. After the tour they will be eating at Spa-ghetti Warehouse. The tour is free of charge. Atten-dees are responsible for their meal. This year’s din-ner will be Saturday, November 12 at noon and will

take place at the Main Campus. .

Work has begun for this year’s Live Nativity. This will be our third year and we have had an average of 500 people attend the performances each year. It takes a lot of people to make the Live Nativity happen. We would like to have 50 youth in the Youth Choir. We need up to 30 angels. There are also spots for cast members, servers, greeters, guides, costume preparation, ad-

vertising, set up and clean up. We also need live animals such as horses, donkeys, goats, and a camel. This year’s Live Nativity will be Friday and Saturday, December 9 and 10 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Contact Heather Dickerson to help with the Live Nativity.

THE “LEGACY OF HOPE” PROJECT IS NOW MOVING FORWARD The next steps are as follows: 1. Assimilating the Building Committee into “work groups” 2. Launch and complete our Stewardship Campaign under the direction of Gary Enfinger and Impact Stewardship.

Campaign runs September-November.

Pledged giving will beover a 3 year period.

Sunday school stewardship emphasis.

Preaching stewardship emphasis.

Training is currently underway with the Stewardship Teams.

Stewardship Team leaders are Al Webb (Campaign Chairman), Kelly/Shelia Wolfe, Steve/Lisa Heavener, Jim/Beth Martin and Dave/Julie Turner.

Everyone will be able to contribute in a number of creative ways to make the project a possibility. 3. We have secured Don Highlander of Connecting Spaces for architectural services.

Don was our architect on the existing building project.

Don has worked with Builders for Christ on volunteer driven projects. 4. Complete the "extreme interior makeover" of the Heritage Center.

The new look will be youth oriented yet user friendly for all ages!

The Ebenezer volunteer design team is hard at work developing ideas and calculating cost.

5. Calculate a clear cost of the next building phase based on architectural drawings. 6. Determine the feasibility of building the children's wing, sanctuary expansion and adult classroom addition based on securing Baptist Builders for Christ and the stewardship generosity from the people at Ebenezer.

Builders For Christ lead team will be here this October 15-16 to evaluate and pledge their support to help us building in the summer of 2017!

7. Building in 2017 will only be possible as we trust God by faith and we each sacrificially give. We are growing and out of space! However we will not build if doing so encumbers the church financially, thus preventing us from continuing to support our ongoing missions and ministries. The Legacy of Hope project will take great sacrifice on the part of every individual at Ebenezer. Sacrifice in prayer, serving, giving and sharing the load of leadership. Each individual at Ebenezer will play a critical role so that we can insure leaving a Legacy of Hope to future generations.

So we built the wall and the whole wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. Nehemiah 4:6

Institute on the Constitution presents “Our Christian Heritage: The Truth of America’s Biblical Founding”, a one day seminar for pastors, church and community leaders. This will take place Saturday, September 24, 10:00

a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Materials are $40. Couples can share materials. A free lunch will be served to par-ticipants. Registration deadline is Monday, September 19. There is limited space, so those interested should sign up early. Some of the topics to be discussed include: Christo-pher Columbus’ real reason for sailing west; why the Pilgrims came to America; Why the Declaration of In-dependence, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution are arguably the most important document in the world.

Other subjects will include modern day applications, what pastors and other Christians can do, what does the Bible say about politics and earthly government, and legal guidelines for pastors and churches. Register by calling the church office at 385-8411.

A new year of Sunday Nights at Ebenezer com-mences September 25 at 5:30 p.m. Discipleship Classes and Bible study groups will be available for all ages. We encourage you and your family to become a part of our Sunday night activities.

Gopher Buddies (ages 4 & 5) and Olympians (grades one through four) will learn Bible verses, engage in Christian service, activities, games, and more each Sun-day night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Youth 190 (grades five and six) and grades seven and eight will be doing a study entitled “Teach Us Your Way”, based on the Sermon on the Mount. Pastor

Phil Westenbarger will be leading a study on the Ser-mon on the Mount. “Strengthening Your Grip”, a book study by Charles Swindoll will be led by Scott Lipker. Each of these studies runs 12 weeks. INSTITUTE ON THE CONSTITUTION PRESENTS ONE-DAY SEMINAR

Each year millions of men, women and children are victims of sexual and forced-labor human trafficking. For the past several years our church has held a bene-fit golf outing with proceeds going to fight human trafficking.

This year’s golf outing will be Saturday, September 10 at Pumpkin Vine Golf Course in Bremen. The gath-ering time is 9:00 a.m. with tee off at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $35 per person for the 18 hole event. This is a four player scramble. Participants are asked to assemble their teams. A meal will be provided after the golf outing. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army to help in their effort to combat human trafficking. For more information, contact the church office.

A common statement within Christianity goes some-thing like this, “Doctrine divides, we need to spend less time concerning ourselves with these issues and spend more time loving Jesus and people.” This is an interesting statement for a number of reasons. First, there is no ques-

tion that Christians should love Jesus and people more. However, who defines who Jesus is and what love is? My idea of Jesus and love may differ from someone else. What about those under the Christian umbrella that see Jesus as more feminine than others do? Do Christians and Mormons believe in the same Jesus? We sure do use the same terminology. Many of you have already an-swered these questions in your mind. Guess what just happened? Doctrine/theology just happened. Second, should we apply this idea to those living out-side of America? One of many questions grabbed my at-

tention in an article entitled, Perceptions of Jesus, Chris-tians & Evangelism in the UK. “So what do UK adults know and believe about Jesus Christ?” Here is a stagger-ing find: “You don’t have to be a Christian to believe Jesus actually walked the earth 2,000 years ago, and among the general population of UK adults, this historical reality

is a common assumption.”¹ While tragic, if doctrine does

not matter then neither does this result. Just encourage

them to love Jesus and people, right? Third, I find it inter-

9

esting that the apostle Paul told young Timothy “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine…(2 Timothy 4:3). Furthermore, Paul encourages Timothy to “remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines” (1 Timothy 1:3). If doctrine

does not matter why does Paul bring up the importance of it? Christian theologian J.I Packer said something sobering, “A much-traveled leader, a native American (be it said), has declared that he finds North American Protestantism, man-centered, manipulative, success-oriented, self-indulgent and sentimental, as it blatantly is, to be 3,000 miles wide and half an inch deep.” ²

Not all doctrinal points are worth dividing over, but if a per-son believes none are worthy of division something is terribly wrong. It has been said the moment you open your mouth to explain who Jesus is you are engaging in doctrine and

theology, Therefore, it is of extreme importance. Doctrine comes from Scripture and this alone tells us who Christ is and what love truly is. Next time we will begin looking at what doctrines are worthy of division and later those that are not.

Vacation Bible School was held July 11 through 15. We had an amazing time with an average of 130 children attending throughout the week. Our theme was “Investigating Dinosaurs”. During the week Scott and Amy Campbell taught about how dinosaurs fit into the Bible’s account of crea-tion by using slideshow presentations and hands-on displays of fossils and life size dino-saur models. Throughout the week children also partici-pated in The Perry County Sheriff’s Depart-ment’s Safety Town and learned about police investigations, equipment, and being safe in the park, They also toured police vehicles and met Argo, the department’s K-9. Other activities each evening included wor-ship, crafts, Bible lessons, “dino snacks”, and games. For Tuesday’s game time, Hocking Hills Inflatables provided two bounce houses. Friday’s closing ceremony gave parents the opportunity to see what their children learned at VBS. Afterwards, pizza was pro-vided for everyone. The week capped off with a tug of war over a dino mud pit. Thank you to Les & Tina Smathers, all of our VBS workers, Sheriff William Barker and the Perry County Sheriff’s Department, Scott & Amy Campbell, Shelley Riggs for donating decorations, and Hocking Hills Inflatables for your hard work and dedication to our church’s VBS ministry.
