We are in the days leading up to Easter, when we commemorate Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. In the Christian commu-nity, this has often been marked by a time of turning from sin and seeking to tame sinful desires through fasting. For those familiar with this practice, the typical ques-tion is, “What are you giving up for Lent (days leading up to Easter)?” This is some-thing I have regularly practiced and find it beneficial.

The Christian life, how-ever, is not primarily marked by giving up but getting. We have been given the greatest possible gift, the very life of the Son of God given for us so that we might live a new life with God forever. For those who believe in Jesus, we now know that life between the first coming of Christ when the decisive battle was won and when Christ returns and all who re-spond to the good news of Jesus Christ will be brought into a new glorious crea-tion. In between, our primary purpose is to bring this good news and God’s power into the world.

This Easter, I want to invite and even chal-lenge you to add a purpose to your life. Easter Sunday is one of the most likely times for people who don’t normally at-tend a church to come to a worship ser-vice. We are preparing for a great celebra-tion of the power of Christ to set us free into life. We think it is Good News that the world needs to hear. I know that for a lot of people, sharing our faith or just in-

viting someone to a worship service can be very intimidating. But if we believe this is the best news the world has been given, at some point, we need to face our fears and go for it.

I’m not asking you to break out the “Four Spiritual Laws” or go knocking door to door. Just invite friends or a family to come to Easter Sunday morning and may-

be have brunch, lunch, or dinner with you as a follow-up.

Not only are we hoping that the message of Christ will draw people to Jesus, but we are planning to invite peo-

ple to come back and see how Christ wants to set us free in life at its best. We are going to start a five week series on Apr. 8, called “Squeezed: Choosing to Make Room for Life.” It is a series that is intend-ed to provide biblical wisdom and show how the power of Jesus can help us experi-ence the best that life has to offer.

Another way you can participate in this missional goal is to pray. Pray that God would shine in his light through our church family. Pray that we would contin-ue to grow so that his life might shine through us. Pray that we would be win-some and committed to sharing Jesus with our friends and neighbors. Pray that we continually respond to his plans and his ways. Pray that we would embrace being on mission for Him

Jesus came to lead us into life that is really life. He came to save us from just surviving in a broken world to thriving in a new life, with new purpose, hope and peace. Paul is one of our greatest teachers in understand-ing the way of Jesus. We are going to spend four weeks leading up to Holy Week under-standing Paul’s great claim that “to live is Christ” and even more “to die is gain.”

Even though France is the largest country in Western Europe, the most visited desti-nation in the world, and certainly one of the most beautiful, France is also described as the “front line for spiritual battle.” Only 1% of the population attend an Evangeli-cal Christian church. This Easter, we will be sending our special offering to Merrie Goddard, our missionary in France. This special financial gift will help Merrie with her missionary needs in order to continue being able to minister with Youth for Christ International in France. Merrie will be visiting West Side Church Apr. 10-27—look for opportunities to meet Merrie and hear her speak about her ministry in April.

March 29 - Maundy Thursday Remembering the meaning of the Last Supper—drawing near to God through music, prayer, and the Word—understanding our ongoing communion with Him today.

March 30 - Good Friday Commemorating and reflecting on the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf.

April 1 - Easter Sunday Celebrating the Joy and Hope we have in Jesus’ Resurrection.

ope has many faces: a family seeing their home restored from a devastating flood, a young homeless boy finding safe haven from the street gangs of his home town, a college stu-dent learning English skills which will open new opportunities. These are the kinds of hope which our mission teams will be seek-ing to bring to the people of Houston, Colombia, and the Czech Republic this summer.

Our youth team led by Ben Downey, Youth Pastor and Steve Critchlow, will be partnering with the ministry Praying Pelican to help restore houses for some of the more than 500,000 people

who are still displaced or living in damaged homes from the flooding brought last year by Hurricane Harvey. This event, the largest housing disaster in American history, affected over 300,000 homes, 20% of which were occupied by people who live below the poverty line. Our students will be providing some of the man-power needed in helping local churches and organizations working toward long-term recovery for both the physical and spiritual needs of Houston residents.

Twelve adults and 2 youth led by Steve and Sandra Critchlow will be headed to the mountains outside Medellin, Colombia to provide support for Open Arms Foundation. Through a friendship with Phil and Carolina Bullard, West Side hosted Enoch and Christina Hernandez in January to learn more about their ministry to young boys and girls from the streets of Medellin. Reaching out with Jesus’ love, they seek to teach confidence and encourage oppor-tunities that point these youngsters away from the dysfunction and hopeless future that pervades their culture. Our team will be constructing a boy’s dorm where they can find the safety and comfort of a place to sleep each night, something not to be taken for granted.

Karel Coppock and 8 others will be going to Scrip-ture Union ESL camp in the mountains north of Prague in the Czech Republic for the third year. In this beautiful setting college age students gather to improve their English skills, and in the process get exposure to Christian teaching and worship. In a country which is atheist in its constitution, this is a rare opportunity. Czech youth are eager to learn and practice English with native speakers, as fluency in English is often a key to success in business. Many of these kids have told previous teams that this camp is the highlight of their year, and there have been numbers of them

each year give their lives to Christ. Through our partnership with missionaries Andrew and Amy Funka, West Siders have been grateful to be a part of this ministry.

This April we have the opportunity to help raise support to bring hope to these three areas through our fundraiser A Night of Hope: Spread-ing light, bringing hope across the globe. It’s a big chal-lenge, and we have big goals. But we have a big God who calls us to bring hope and light to His world. Won’t you join us?

A New Kind of Fundraiser. This year we are shaking things up a little. Our goal is to fund not just one, but three trips to different parts of the world. It will take efforts from West Side and beyond. We will be ventur-ing beyond our facilities to provide a special evening with excellent food, elegant décor, and unique auction items. We encourage you to invite your friends to this opportunity to make a difference in the world. Tables for eight are available as well as single tickets.

“A Vision for Vocation: An Evening With Steven Garber”

What does it mean to be called? Come hear Dr. Steven Garber offer a broad vision of calling (or, as he puts it, vocation) that pertains to all of life – in our homes, workplaces, and community. Steve is a husband, father, author, professor of Marketplace Theology and Leadership at Regent College, and founding director of the Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation, & Culture in Washington D.C.

Steve says, “The word ‘vocation’ is a rich one, having to address the wholeness of life, the range of relationships and

responsibilities. Work, yes, but also families, and neighbors, and citizenship, locally and globally—all of this and more is seen as vocation, that to which I am called as a human being, living my life before the face of God.”

Regent College and Dan Wodrich, Flourish Director, will share the story and identify whole-life discipleship activities and resources – currently available and being planned – to bless and benefit individuals, congrega-tions, ministries, and workplace leaders and groups in our community. Come explore God’s call to each and all of us to share in His flourishing of the Mid-Columbia.

Jack Dowell describes Ingalls Creek as the place where God “re-ravels my un-raveled soul”. Without all the distractions of city life, you can build and strengthen relationships, new and old, family and friends. Where else can you solve the eternal questions of life, the universe, and how to properly put toilet paper on the roll? There are even the comforts of home like a kitchen and indoor toilets and showers! It is not nearly as primitive as camping was in your (or your parents’) childhood.

Support Group meets monthly for fellowship, education, and support. If you are a full-time care-

giver or relative of a loved one with Alzhei-mer’s or other Dementia OR if you care for a

loved one with a chronic, debilitating disease and you need “a break” from the chores and care you provide then this group is for you! Coming Up - Easter Sunday Apr. 1, as we thank Jesus for defeating sin and death! And we’re celebrat-ing these truths again this year with our Egg Hunt for

elementary age kids. It’s an out-reach to our com-munity and a fun object lesson as

we learn about the empty tomb. Please help us with this by donating plastic eggs and individually wrapped nut-free candy (like Starburst). You can bring your donations of empty plastic eggs and/or nut-free can-dy to WS North Holy Word Studios on Sundays and Wednesdays or to the Church Office during the

week. We will fill the eggs.

Children & Family Ministry - Mark Your Calendars!

out the 2018 Trainee Ministry Program at West Side Church!

This is an intensive 9-week program that provides guidance

and instruction within a supportive community, learning min-

istry skills through engaging with children and youth within

the church. If you know someone who may be interested in

learning more about this program, have them visit:

for this opportunity are available on the website. All applica-

tions will be considered and interviews scheduled as we re-

ceive them. Applications are due no later than Sun., Apr. 8.

The 2018 summer will run from Jun. 13-Aug. 16.

Trainee Ministry - Summer 2018

The purpose of our program is to introduce children to Jesus and cultivate a relationship with Him through a variety of fun and creative lessons, activities and relationships.

Our Deacons strive to provide a comforting time for family and friends who mourn the passing and celebrate the life of their loved one (Matthew 5:4) and rejoice in the promise of eternal life (John 5:24). Our role is to set-up and serve refreshments to those gathering after memorial services held at West Side Church. Family members are often relieved that the details of a memorial reception can be left to the Dea-cons, allowing the family to focus on spending time with one another. Because death is unpredictable, we never know when or how often we will be called to serve in this role. Members of the church family can reach out to a grieving family by providing

food items or desserts or by offering their time to help set-up or serve at a reception. If you have an interest in assisting with memorial receptions, please contact Kip McGilliard (217.508.9989 or [email protected]).

Registration for the upcoming school year (2018-19) at West Side Preschool has begun, and there’s been a strong response. Our two Pre-Kindergarten classes are full and the waiting list is growing. Only 12 spots remain for those children that turn 3 before Aug. 31, and there are still numerous openings for the 2-year old classes. Please tell your friends that now is the time to register for inclusion in the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.

Somewhere in our neighborhood is a kind, thoughtful, and big-hearted young lady of high school age who stopped by the preschool on her way home from school. As I worked in the classroom, she asked if I was a teacher and when I said yes, she held out her hand, saying, “I know it’s not

much, but I wanted to give something for the educa-tion of young children.” She poured these pennies

into my hand. After I paused, thanked her, and told her that she had made my day, she was on her way. Somewhere, a mother should be very proud.

Wow! The West Side Preschool received a check for $64.61 from the Fred Meyer Community Awards Pro-gram for the fourth quarter of 2017. Seventeen house-holds shopped and, without any cost to them, sup-ported our ministry to children and families through-out the Tri-Cities. Thank you for helping us earn free money! The Letter to the Ephesians - WS South Room 306 (Upper Room)

Paul’s epistle, known as the Letter to the Ephesians, is considered by many to be Paul’s most eloquent expression of the unity of all things in Christ and of what it means to live as His church. Written while Paul was imprisoned in Rome, in all likelihood it was a circular letter meant to be shared among church-es rather than being directed specifically to the church at Ephesus. Join us as we study this “Queen of the Epistles” and explore its lessons for our own lives as followers of Jesus and late recipients of the circular.

Women of the Word: 12 Women of the Bible - WS North Room 2-4 (Library)

We invite you to “Twelve Women of the Bible: Life-Changing Stories for Women Today.” Each lesson will focus on one biblical woman. These women will help you discover new insights and provide a powerful witness to God’s gracious love.
