Excitement bubbled up inside me when Iwas asked to write an introduction to thismagazine. I always love to share mypassion for conscious, clean, healthy living, and so I hope the contents of my article, and the entire magazine, will inspire youand perhaps galvanise you into action to“be the change you wish to see in theworld”, as Ghandi said. My only concernwas that to do this topic justice, I wouldneed to include volumes of material!Instead, I decided to keep it simple, practical and down to earth by sharing afew ideas, tips, tools, and processes youcan easily incorporate into your everydaylife. With very little effort, and yet a lot ofjoy, you can bring consciousness into eachand every moment.

Responding to theinner callThe fact you are reading this isconfirmation that somewhere, deep withinyou, there is a longing to make a differenceto life: to yourself, loved ones, extendedfamily, humanity, and Mother Earth. I know Idon’t need to remind you that for true andlasting change to occur it has to start fromwithin. The ripples of awakening, caring forothers and consciously respecting theplanet, will come from within our ownhearts, affecting our actions, which will be aresponse to that inner call. If you undertake

this work, then soon it will be natural tofeel compassion and understanding forloved ones and colleagues. You can bringconsciousness into your work place, helping colleagues and employees growand reach their full potential.

With regards to how you eat, what couldbe more fulfilling than honouring andenlivening your body with life-giving,organic, poison-free, locally grown food?Feel how good it can be to buyconsciously, supporting Fair Tradeemployment. And, if you can, why notchoose a vehicle that creates lesspollution? Every positive action will leadon to the next...

Your global familyIt will then become second nature toextend that same caring to your globalfamily and environment. I believe we canall feel inspired by the possibility ofwalking more softly on this planet, andresponding to the call from within to livemore conscious, open, caring, fulfillinglives. You may be drawn to giving back tolife in some way, not only to your localcommunity but on a global scale. Overconsumption and the unconscious use ofprecious resources is no longer a popularmodel. Instead, there is a call to useresources more wisely, looking beyondthe instant gratification that comes fromfulfilling our every personal desire andwhim. Let’s recognise the precious bountywith which we have been blessed; let’scherish it, respect it and feel inspired toshare it. Truly, each moment can be oneof living consciously – being open notonly to how Grace can give to you, buthow it can use you to give somethingback. As Miten – the musician whosebeautiful songs are played at Journeyworkshops – so wisely sings, we must “tryto leave this world more beautiful thanwe found it”.

BRANDON’S ADvICE

Breathe pure air

Luckily, I live on a magical section ofthe Welsh coast, on a cliff top in anancient, unspoiled area of idyllic

countryside, untouched by industry, but Istill like to ensure the air I breathe isabsolutely free from householdpollutants. For this reason I use an airpurifier/ionizer. I even take a small ionizingunit to hotel rooms to clear the air whenon tour. Ionizers create the same negativecharge you get in the air at the beach orwalking in the woods, especially after it’srained. Most homes are positivelycharged thanks to all the electronicdevices and chemical pollutants withinthem. This positive ionization can makeyou feel drained and heavy. However, when air is negatively ionised, it not onlypurifies your home but makes you feelbetter as you’re breathing enlivened air.

Eat organicChoosing to purchase organic productshelps ensure you ingest fewer, if any, toxins or nasty chemicals. The toxicityfrom chemical fertilisers and treatmentsgets into our organs, and the amountscan be shocking. Did you know thatregular, non-organic coffeecan contain 78 differentpoisons? Think of the toxicbuild up in your organseven if you drink only onecup everyday for many years. So, whenever feasible, getorganically grown coffee, and, if it’s decaf, make sureit’s decaffeinated by waterprocess, which is toxinfree. Starbucks use organically-grown FairTrade coffee and have a hugelysupportive employee policy.

Eating organic, in-season and localproduce where possible helps theenvironment and local communities. Italso means the food wont have beenflown in from New Zealand or Sri Lanka, thereby losing precious life-force en route, wasting unnecessary energy and creatinghuge carbon emissions in the process.

Keep movingMaintainphysical fitnessby moving yourbody daily, be itthrough walking, dancing, yoga, orrunning. AsMiten beautifullysings, “You gottamove!”

“When air isnegativelyionised, it notonly purifiesyour home butmakes you feelbetter as you'rebreathingenlivened air”

BRANDON’S ADvICE

De-clutterInvite fresh energy into your life by de-junking your home, including wardrobes, closets, broom cupboards and the attic. What is one man’s trash is another man’streasure, so share what you no longerwant/need with those around you. Ofcourse, clearing out on the outside alsolends itself to supporting a good mentalclear out, so make sure you meditate, chant, sing, laugh and love on a regularbasis. Plus, do Journey process work tohelp clear out any stubborn negativebeliefs and habits, so your inner diamondcan shine bright!

Buy Fair TradeAs far as possible, buy produce labelled‘Fair Trade’, so the workers harvestingyour food are paid fair living wages fortheir work. Fair Trade also applies toclothing. Some of the clothes in M&Shave a Fair Trade label, so I chose thosewhen possible, as this supports cottonproducers and factory production lineworkers in other countries. Not only do Ilike to shop where the products are FairTrade and made from natural materials, but also at stores endeavouring to be amore carbon-neutral. It makes me feelgood to know what I am wearingcontributed to healthy wages for otherhuman beings, and that the shop wasenvironmentally conscious. When I have acup of tea, I try to use products that arenot only consciously produced, but fromcompanies contributing back to the

environment and their employees, such asOrganic India, who plant a tree for everybox of tea sold. In fact, because ofOrganic India, Kevin and I decided tosponsor an entire village in its tree-planting project.

Drink pure waterI only drink purified water now, and havea reverse osmosis system that pullseverything, and I mean even bacteria, parasites and metals, out of the water. Idrink loads of it, and make sure to takehealthy minerals as supplements, as theseare also removed from the water.

Eat alkalineWhen it comes to food in general, Irecommend a largely alkaline diet as it isclaimed that cancer can’t survive inalkaline (non-acidic) environments. So, eatlots of fresh fruits and leafy greens, vegetables, fresh squeezed vegetablejuices and protein from natural, organicsources, and drink plenty of filtered water.Wheat, dairy, cheese, meats, processedfoods, starchy foods and refined sugarstend to create an acidic environment, sotry to limit those and definitely consume

them with lots of alkaline greens. And asa rule of thumb it’s better to eat living,high-water-content foods that cleanseand don’t clog.

Detox every yearOnce a year I go on a highly purifying, life-giving, detox cleanse. It starts with twodays of purely raw food followed by fivedays of vegetable juice fasting, finishedwith one day of raw food to get my bodyenergised again. During this cleanse I havecolonics and massages on alternate days, take herbs for cleansing my internalorgans and blood, and probiotics, foodenzymes and healthy supplements. I doyoga everyday and include some othersport like walking or swimming. I alsoinclude chanting, Satsang, meditations anda Journey process every day.

My morning smoothieFill your body with vibrancy and goodness each day with my morning smoothie and cleansing regime.

* ½ organic apple * 2 sticks organic celery * 1/3 organic cucumber * 1 organic lemon* 1 thumb-size piece organic ginger * 1 cup of organic, dark green leaves * 1 spoon of supergreen powder

(spirulina, chlorella etc) * Filtered water Chop up the above ingredients, addthem to a powerful blender - I use aVitamix - and add enough pure waterto make it drinkable. Enjoy in themorning, after your cup of water andlemon juice to cleanse the liver.

Use healthy skincareLook for genuinely natural cosmetics, soaps and creams. So many so-callednatural creams contain carcinogens(chemicals that can be cancer producing),and what you put on your skin does sinkin and can enter your blood stream. Irecommend using products that aresulphate and paraben free, ideally madesolely from plant derivatives. Usually, genuinely natural products can cost a bitmore, but they often last longer. So manycosmetic companies have jumped on the

bandwagon and label their products‘Natural’ and ‘Organic’ when only oneingredient might be either of those things. So, be vigilant in reading labels. Somegood brands include Dr Hauschka, StellaMcCartney, Miessence, Living Nature, andZia, who are fully committed to 100percent organic products. Use adeodorant that is aluminium free, asaluminium is highly toxic. I use a mineralsalt crystal that kills bacteria. Buy cruelty-free, plant-based beauty products too, asit’s horrible to think that, for the sake ofour beauty, animals are being torturedand killed.

Wear natural fabricI like cotton, silk, rayon and hemp fabrics asthey feel healthier, allow my skin tobreathe, and are longer lasting than mostsynthetics. And it doesn’t always costmore.

Recycle everythingKevin and I recycle everything, from ourbooks, which we lend out to people, toour clothing, which we donate to charity.Even this magazine is printed on recycledpaper. Everything we have should and can

be used by someone else ifthere’s life still in it. So, if youdon’t absolutely lovesomething, and wear oruse it regularly, give itaway to someone whowill! Make sure you buyrecycled paper products:toilet paper, kitchen roll, writing paper, printerpaper. They only cost afew pennies more butyou’ll feel so muchbetter about usingthem. Ourlocalgovernment hasmade recyclingreally easy, soonce a week weput all ourrecycling out forcollection. If youdon’t have that service, just take it to thelocal recycling centre (larger supermarketsoften have collection bins in their carparks). Take the kids with you and make ita fun and educational experience forthem. Kids enjoy helping Mother Earth andmaking a difference – it feels good!

My daily regimeWhen I’m at home, I start with a 25-minute workout on our indoor bike andcross trainer, followed by three minuteson my mini trampoline, which is greatfor moving and cleansing the lymphaticsystem – the system responsible forremoving waste products. I usuallychoose music that uplifts and inspires. Iftime permits, I like to do yoga after myaerobic routine, and if I’m on holiday, I’lldo some sports, too. Following this, I dothree minutes of stretching. When theweather is fine, I go for a hike on thecliffs outside my home overlooking thesea, so that wonderfully sweet, negativelyionised sea air purifies my lungs andgoes into my blood stream.

Respecting my bodyLater I have a small helping of organicberries followed by a freshly blendedveggie smoothie (see box opposite)

made from apple, cucumber, celery, dark green leaves, lemon and ginger, laced with healthy super greenpowders. I use a Vitamix blender soall the fibre remains in the drink.Mid-morning I have an egg-whiteomelette (made from free rangeeggs) with vegetables of the dayand a salad made of avocados, peppers and green leaves. At myother meals I always include a bigsalad. Every week I get at least oneor two massages to deeply relaxmy muscles and get the lymphflowing. I prefer deep tissue orsports massage to really work themuscles, but from time to time Iinclude other body work, such asThai massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, acupressure, kinesiology, or shiatsu. Often, myday includes meditation, chanting, prayer and hanging out in goodcompany with fellow lovers ofTruth.

Go non-toxicYou can buy non-toxic paint for your walls, hypoallergenic covers for your mattressand pillows, and even hypoallergeniccarpets. Look closely at the labels to seeexactly what you’re getting. Make sure youinvest in a healthy, supportive bed as youspend up to a third of your life in one, anda good night’s sleep is essential for health. I have a Tempur-Pedic mattress made frommemory foam, a type used for astronautsin outer space because no bacteria cansurvive in it, but I also recommend pillow-top mattresses with ‘give’ and support. Also, try to invest in natural, Fair Tradecotton bed linen.

Choose non-allergenic, non-toxicdetergents too for laundry, generalcleaning and washing up, as they are goodfor both the environment and your health.

Our eco homeAs you may know, Kevin and I are thrilledthat our green, eco-build house is finallycomplete. Some of the things we haveimplemented that allow us to be morecarbon conscious are: collecting rainwater to to flush toilets; using eco-friendlyinsulation made from recyclednewspapers; choosingbamboo flooring so notrees were felled; airdumping, meaningtransferring the warmair that comes throughthe large glass windowsto other parts of thehouse and, into agenerator to produceelectricity; having triple-paned windows; installingunder-floor heating, which spreadsheat more efficiently than radiators;selecting eco-friendly cement and non-toxic paint; using sustainable wood whereneeded (three trees are planted for eachone felled); choosing eco roofing.

A life of inner peaceOf course, you’ve already figured out I’mgoing to recommend Journey processwork! I don’t know of any more powerfulwork out there for clearing emotionalblocks and opening you into peace andwholeness within. It’s fast, simple, effectiveand lasting. And, there is nothing morejoyous than opening into your ownessence and living from the calmness andjoy you find. It feels right to live lifeauthentically, as an expression of yourtrue self. I get a Journey process once aweek, to release any built up blocks, oldor new, and really polish my innerdiamond. I think of it as general housecleaning for the soul. And, as my own veilsclear away, I find more energy, life, potential and joy arises spontaneously, ofits own accord. It causes me to feel happyand at peace with myself and loved ones.So get creative! Call Journey friends andschedule weekly process work. Get intogear and attend an event if you can –serving either as a trainer or sitting on anAdvanced retreat – to recharge yourspiritual batteries.

It’s a family affairSo much of our stress isn’t just related towork, it’s linked to strained relations withloved ones. To alleviate this and learn toconnect wholesomely with your family, Idearly recommend attending the Healingwith Conscious Communication retreat, where you’ll learn to communicateelegantly, and in a way that empowersyour loved ones. So often we hurt thosewe love without knowing it, withnegatively embedded commands. It’s timeto start letting our words be ones thatencourage, support and empower others. It’s time to communicate healthily andconsciously.

It must be loveSpeaking of relationships, I can think of nobetter seminar for understanding andpenetrating the lies of our relationshipgames than the No Ego Retreat. Much ofthe time, the unhealthy games we playwith our loved ones remain hidden –even from ourselves.

We don’t realise we are unconsciouslydefending ourselves from getting hurt byputting up walls and not knowing how totake them down. Instead, we blame andcriticise others and ourselves, and putourselves into constant motion to avoidwhat is really going on under the surface. Our relationships become a mirror for allthe unmet pain we harbour, and, likewounded animals in the woods, we attackbefore laying ourselves out to beemotionally vulnerable. At the No EgoRetreat, you’ll unearth all the painfulpatterns controlling your life and facethem head on, penetrating the lies, andfinding true freedom and wholeness. Then, instead of having an automaticknee-jerk defence response, you’ll be freeto respond from the real truth of what isin your heart. Communication becomesmore open, honest and authentic; you’llfeel more real and at ease. You’ll alsorecognise what’s your stuff and what’stheirs, and, with your own issues, you’ll bemore able and willing to own them, clearthem, and find healthier ways of being. It’sThe Journey’s most powerful week-longretreat and is a must if you are sincereabout living in freedom, expressing thereal you.

I am woman! (or man)Look out for our JourneyMan andJourneyWoman retreats taking placeworldwide. At the recent Advanced NoEgo Retreat, I welcomed people to writeprivate letters to me, sharing personalissues they wanted to be brought up insatsang. I was stunned at how many wereabout the deep pain associated withintimacy and sexual issues. One manshared feeling inadequate as a man, though he loved his wife dearly. Anotherwoman shared her pain of feelinguncomfortable living in a female body –how she didn’t know how to be ‘equal’ inwhat she saw as a male dominatedworld. She felt sexually shutdown, lost infear and completely insignificant as awoman. Another man shared how he feltintimidated out there in the ‘real world’.He was okay as long as he was achievingsomething at work, but felt incompetentrelating to people, especially women. Somany gender-specific issues arose. Ifyou’re looking to feel whole and at homein your skin, or wanting to be at ease withyour own version of masculinity orfemininity, I strongly encourage you toattend JourneyMan or JourneyWoman. Itfeels like a must for all of us!

“Communicationbecomes more open, honest and authentic;you’ll feel more realand at ease”

BRANDON’S ADvICE

Love your job andreach your potentialMost of us spend about a third of ourlives at work. Of all places, our workplaceneeds to be supportive, open and able tohelp us reach our potential – no matterwhat our profession. Of course, it has tofirst begin with each of us as individuals. We need to take off our own ‘lids’, clearout the deeply held negative beliefs thatact as silent saboteurs, such as self-imposed limitations and damagingnegative self-beliefs. Only when all ourprogrammes are exposed and clearedwill our true leadership potential arise. We need to uncover our own naturalgenius, talents and skills, and from there, empower our work colleagues to do thesame. We ought to be able to leave workfeeling inspired – used by Grace to ourfullest capacity. Everyone ought to feelthey’ve made a difference, andexperience natural contentment thatarises when a job has been well done.Personally, seeing our employees beingstretched, expanded and fully reachingtheir potential feels truly satisfying. Itcreates a wholesome and successfulbusiness on all levels, and, as a boss, I gohome at night knowing our beloved teamis being encouraged and nourished; there

is nothing more inspiring. In response tothis call to spread The Journey into theworld of work, Kevin has formedConscious Company, which givespowerful seminars called ConsciousLeadership to business people who trulywant to liberate their own leadershippotential and bring consciousness intotheir careers. The results from thesehugely inspiring seminars have beenastounding. One businessman’s incomeand profitability increased three-fold afterthe programme; some shared feelingmore relaxed and confident in worksituations that previously were stressful;others shared how productivity in theirbusiness – both their own and theircolleagues’ – soared since the workshop;yet more shared about successfulcontracts being signed, unexpecteddoors opening, or instead of feelingemotionally drained, felt excited to go towork again. We want to access whatGrace has in store for us, to fulfil ourpotential and be able to look back andsay we did our best and helped serveothers to achieve their own potential.Kevin offers a special commitment toJourney graduates, offering them a much-reduced rate for the ConsciousLeadership course, because of theircommitment to truth, to life and to TheJourney.

Kevin has also made a commitment totrain and use only Journey practitionerswhen this work begins moving into morecorporate coaching and presentations inbusinesses directly. This means Journeypractitioners will be leading the way inteaching businesses and organisations toreach their potential all around the world. If you want to make a difference to thelives of others, and make your workplacea more harmonious, productive, wholesome environment, I stronglyencourage you to attend.

Bringing spiritualityinto my lifeIn all areas of my life I am committed tobeing spiritually conscious. There is much Ido to deepen in love and open widerinto Grace. I like to engage in activitiesthat encourage an ease of being and joyin my everyday life. At our Journey

seminars we meditate, pray, sing anddance to up-lifting music, then roll up oursleeves and do deeply healing processwork. All these joyous and liberatingpractises are brought into my daily life; Ipray and meditate before every task, be ita Journey process or writing an article, aboard meeting, radio show or phone call;in my car I listen to Miten and DevaPremal or Kirtana, and sing at the top ofmy lungs – it’s probably a funny sight foranyone who pulls up at the lights next tome! At home, this music usually playssoftly in the background, permeating myhome with Grace. I recommend havingchanting evenings at home with yourfriends; just put on some music, singtogether and meditate, share with oneanother and do Journey processes ifthere is time. Keeping good companyallows you to stay saturated in Grace. Iknow that if I am conscious of the kind ofcompany I keep, and the types ofbusinesses I support, my whole life canbecome spiritual.

It’s down to all of usUltimately, it is my prayer that we bringGrace and consciousness into everyaspect of our lives – from our familyrelationships and businessesenvironments, to our homes, bodies, thefood we eat, and our very beings. Kevinand I want to bring Graceinto everything, fromcommunication, to ourworkout routine andspiritual life. Everybreath we take andevery action wemake can be toserve life, theenvironment, humanity, andourselves. It’s timefor us all to celebrateliving consciously.

Diabetes, heart disease and cancermight top most health agendas interms of monetary investment

and media awareness, but there’s another, perhaps more insidious condition silentlycreeping its way through society, oftenundiscussed due to social stigma:depression. In the UK, the Governmenthas been pushing to raise awareness ofdepression, especially in the NationalHealth Service (NHS). Deputy PrimeMinister Nick Clegg said earlier this year :“We are still not doing enough toaddress the often serious physical healthproblems of those with [depression].”Depression is also gradually becomingless taboo thanks in part to celebritiescoming ‘out of the dark’ so to speak, andrevealing they too are or have beensufferers; these include former footballerStan Collymore, who has helped raisefunds for the charity The DepressionAlliance, and comedian, writer and mentalhealth campaigner Ruby Wax, whoinvestigates the mind and writes candidlyabout her own experiences of depressionin her new book Sane New World(Hodder).

The silent saboteurA recent UK survey revealed that almosthalf of Brits are or have been depressed. The study, conducted by the DepressionAlliance, covered 2000 adults and foundthat just over a third (37 percent), andhalf of women (53 percent) in Britain hadreported feelings of depression eithercurrently or in the past. The usualestimate is one in four. Most of those saidthey’d experienceddepressions also reportedfeelings of loneliness as aresult. The survey, madepublic in January 2014, Butmen, it seems, are less likelyto get help. Separate figures in 2013showed around two-thirds of patientsreferred for counseling or behavioraltherapy in the UK were women(475,000) compared to 274,000 men.The charity’s survey found that seven inten men who reported suffering fromdepression found talking to someoneclose about things was helpful inmaintaining their recovery, compared withalmost eight in ten women. However, they were less likely to seek help.

Decades ofdepressionOne man who knows just what it’s like tosuffer with depression is Kevin Billett,CEO and co-founder of self-developmenttherapy The Journey. “Since my teens, Ihad suffered from clinical depression.Though a relatively successfulbusinessman of mostly positive andoutgoing disposition, I would often findmyself in despair, not able to get out ofbed in the morning. I would take days offwork to lie on the sofa, unable tomotivate myself to do more than watchtelevision and sleep. My friends’ andfamily’s advice that I should either ‘pull

myself together’ or ‘snap out of it’ was ofno solace.” Kevin thinks he knows why somany of us, in Western cultures, areaffected with depression. “As children, weoften grow up learning strategies to keepour emotions in check, or hidden, as it’s‘safer’ not to feel or express them, especially the ‘unwanted’ ones that creatediscomfort for our elders or are judgedas inappropriate,” says Kevin.

But failing to express emotions onlyresults in them becoming trapped withinthe body, says Kevin. “Years of blockingyour emotions can not only lead tophysical illnesses but also depression,” hesays. Despite being advised by doctors totake conventional drugs, Kevin didn’t wantto go down that route. However, by hislate 30s, things had gotten worse. “I wasmentally disassociated from my friendsand family, and unable to focus longenough to hold a simple, intelligentconversation,” says Kevin. “Anxious aboutevery personal circumstance, I wouldoften find myself sitting in my car inremote places, not knowing how I hadgot there.” By then suicidal with despair,Kevin reluctantly turned to his GP, whoreferred him to a psychiatrist who gavehim a prescription for Prozac, Diazepamand Temazepam. With no other realisticoption, Kevin gave in. “The drugs enabledme to function normally, at least, thoughthey left me with a sense of unreality, and, more worryingly, an overt aggressivenessthat eventually caused me to plunge backinto depression. “I now know that thesedrugs, which are often the first and onlyline of help given to support those withdepression, actually further suppress thebody’s natural state of happiness.

SPECIAL REPORT

Tackling depression head onIt might seem like depression is spreading faster than an Aussie bush fire, but anti-depressioncampaigners such as Kevin Billett are throwing healing waters onto the root causes of the problem, starting Down Under. Katy Sunnassee reports

“Years of blocking your emotionscan not only lead to physicalillnesses but also depression”

Depressing statistics• Mental illness costs the UK

economy more than £105billionevery year, with depression andanxiety alone costing £16.4billionthrough NHS treatment and lostearnings

• Around 350 Million peopleworldwide suffer with depression, according to the World HealthOrganization

• Around a third of men and half ofwomen in Britain, according to apoll by The Depression Alliance, reported feelings of depression

They were originally developed not as acure for depression, but as anti-anxietydrugs, and they essentially suppress allemotions and keep people in a state offogginess,” says Kevin.

Healing childhoodtraumaAfter 20 years of suffering in the dark, itwas self-healing therapy method TheJourney that kicked Kevin’s depressioninto touch (and of which he is now CEOand married to its creator, Brandon Bays,a best-selling author and teacher in thefield of mind-body healing). cellularhealing seminar teacher). “What Iexperienced was probably the mostprofound thing of my life, up to thatpoint,” says Kevin, recalling his experienceof the weekend workshop, now sometwo decades ago. “I was encouraged touncover the emotional layers that laybeneath my depression, and eventuallyencountered a hopelessness sooverwhelming that I had been preparedto do anything to avoid it. But, in finallyfacing this hopelessness, its hold on meevaporated!” Kevin says he was able toresolve the childhood issues that he feelswas the root cause of his depression, andfelt a sense of inner peace, stillness andconfidence. Within 48 hours, and againstthe advice of his medical consultant, Kevinstopped his medication. “Although Iwould never recommend anyonewithdraw from this type of drug soabruptly, my personal experience wasthat the depth of wellbeing I discoveredon The Journey, stayed with me. I havenot had a moment of depression since.”

Feeling upliftedDown UnderKevin’s profound experience led him tocreate a weekend workshop targetedsolely for other suffers. Entitled ‘Out ofthe Blue – freedom from the real causesof depression’, the programme was firstheld early in February 2014 in

Melbourne, Australia. Using Journeyworktechniques to specifically deal withdepression, anxiety, stress related issuesand other related health problems, theworkshop helped participants locate anderadicate the root causes of depression, leading to “freedom from limitations, anda newfound passion for life” says Kevin.Prior to starting the course, two thirds ofthe participants filled in a questionnaireindicating levels of depression, anxietyand stress ranging from mild to severe.Pre-workshop responses indicatedmoderate levels of depression, anxietyand stress (out of a range of normal, mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe),with post-workshop responses showing,in some cases, more than 70 percentlower scores in all three categories.

All in the mind? But, is it all just mumbo jumbo? Can self-help processes like The Journey reallymake lasting changes to people? It seemssceptics and supporters of orthodoxwestern medicine are beginning to losetheir basis for argument, as developmentsin the field of psychoneuroimmunology(PNI) begin to suggest our thoughtpatterns do indeed affect our bodychemistry. This has led researchers to theconclusion that negative thinking cansuppress the immune system. PNIresearch looks at the interactionsbetween the nervous, endocrine andimmune systems and stress or illness. Ifyou are experiencing any negativeemotions such as fear or anger, these arepicked up by your brain, which promptsyour endocrine system to releasehormones that have an adverse effect onimmunity, thereby leaving you more opento disease. A meta analysis of 300 articlesand studies published in 2004 (1), pointedto a link between chronic stress andreduced immune function. The authorsstated that the most chronic stressorswere “associated with reliable decreasesin almost all functional immune measuresexamined”. Dr Janice Kiecolt-Glaser ofOhio State University’s Wexner MedicalCenter (2), looked at the blood tests forimmune function of medical studentsduring exams and compared them tobaseline blood tests taken a month priorto their final exams. A decline was seen innatural killer T-cells (atype of cytotoxiclymphocyte critical tothe immune system),which are responsible

for fighting viruses and even attackingcancerous cells. For Kevin, this all justproves, scientifically, what he has alreadyexperienced. “We know angry people aremore prone to heart attacks, stressed-outfolks get ulcers, and even that strong andlong buried emotions like grief, fear andresentment can contribute to cancer,” hesays. “But by lifting the blanket ofdepression, and opening into the naturalflow of our emotions instead of trying tosuppress them with drugs, we can beginto live life fully, passionately, joyously andin vibrant health.”

OUT OF THE BLUE: Kevin Billett, CEO of The Journey, banished his depression and has now developed aJourney course to specifically tackle mental illness

Page 14: Living Consciously 2015

For much of his life, Kevin Billett, co-director of The Journey, struggledwith food. “At 14 I felt pudgy and

embarrassed about my waistline. At 16 Ilooked at my body with anger anddecided to do something about it ‘onceand for all’ but to no avail,” he says, remembering how upset and frustratedhe would feel that no matter what he did,the weight stayed. Since his mid-twentiesKevin was always 30-50 poundsoverweight, which took a huge toll on hisself-esteem not to mention fitness levelsand lifestyle choices. Though he tried dietsand made many commitments toexercise regularly, the results were limitedand temporary, and Kevin wouldsuccumb to the internal battle betweenwhat he wanted to eat and what hisbody really needed. “I carried onstruggling, eating more and doing lessuntil my weight crept back to, andbeyond, its previous levels. Each time mydetermination to 'get serious' seemedmore hopeless than the last,” he says. Andhe’s far from alone. Official NHS statisticsshow a marked rise in obesity over a

period of 18 years, with 13 percent ofmen and 16 percent of women classifiedas obese in 1993, compared to 24percent and 26 percent in 2011(1). TheNHS Choices website (nhs.uk) blames theincrease on “easy access to cheap, high-energy food that is often aggressivelymarketed” along with people leadingmore sedentary lifestyles thanks toincreased TV watching, internet browsing, and driving more than walking. However, being less physically active is only half ofthe weight gain epidemic; it’s the rise injunk food, and people literally becomingaddicted to foods high in sugar, bad fatsand artificial additives, that’s causingpeople not only to pile on pounds, but fallinto depression or create other chronichealth conditions, such as autoimmunediseases or adrenal fatigue – where theadrenal glands are overworked by thestress of a highly processed diet. A junkfood diet could even lead to arthritis, saysLynne McTaggart, editor of What Doctor’sDon’t Tell You (wddty.com). In theDecember 2013 issue, which included aspecial report on arthritis, she wrote that

the disease is not only caused by excessweight but by eating foods that causeinflammation. “The major contributors aresugar, processed and fried foods, whichrelease oxidising free radicals into thesystem that, in excess, can damage thetissues around joints,” she said(2). It can’t bedenied: eating a poor diet leads manypeople to suffer emotionally, physically andmentally, especially when they usecomfort food as a crutch.

Food for thoughtBut help is at hand for those stuck indestructive cycles with food, thanks to anew week-long retreat created by Kevinand his co-workers. Having accumulatedyears’ of experience dealing with people’sfood and weight issues during Journeyprocesses, including his own, Kevin andother Journey practitioners created Stopthe Food Fight, a powerful, effectiveprogramme to specifically help people withfood additions, unhealthy habits, andstubborn weight. “The results have beenastonishing. My core relationship with

food has fundamentally shifted. I nolonger crave anything, and instead onlywant to eat what my body needs to keepit healthy. My food fight has stopped.”Kevin’s weight dropped effortlessly, hesays, and his desire to exercise returned.

Seven days tofreedomDuring the retreat, participants feast onhealthy food and take plenty of exercise, but, more importantly, undergo Journey

processing to banish deep-seated,unhealthy behaviours around food, andlearn ways to create lasting change.“People leave feeling inspired, energised, refreshed and full of motivation tocontinue their healthy changes, bothphysically and mentally,” says Kevin. Withsuccess stories already hailing from eventsin Australia and the US, there’s bound tobe more transformations occurring thisNovember when Stop The Food Fighttakes place in Holland this November. So, if you’ve long struggled with weight

issues and food addictions, why not bookyourself a place on the course and be incontrol of food again, not the other wayaround.

“My food issues vanished!”Journey Practitioner Bet Diening-Weatherston, who is presenting Stop TheFood Fight in London this year, reveals howthe programme changed her own life.

When I first attended this seven-dayexperience I thought the focus would just beon food and diet, but although Stop The FoodFight did begin with a discussion aroundoverconsumption and habits, it quickly movedon to why we abuse food.I soon realised the way Iate and what I atereflected my relationshipwith myself, others andlife. Clearly I’d been usingfood to reward or punishmyself. Issues of self-esteem and self-worth arose, as I brought to light how I’d beenmeasuring my self worth by the approval/disapproval of others.

Shaking it upThe course was far from just verbal; we all got moving, doing specificbody movements to stir up cell memories, such as a ‘liver cleanse’ torelease toxins. A series of techniques helped us make peace with thepast and become inspired by the possibilities life offers.Kevin's tailor-made process allowed us to clear out and heal frompast emotional, physical and mental blocks, guiding us throughoutwith love, humour, clarity and humility to become our best selves.

Getting resultsBy the end, all my self-defeating issues were addressed and healed. Allof a sudden the fight with food simply stopped! I now find iteffortlessly to eat more consciously and healthfully. I also enjoy regularexercise and celebrate my body’s abilities to be strong and fit. Myissues around self-worth are healing. All in all it’s truly been life-changing.The retreat gives you a set of tools to live a life of love, awarenessand compassion for yourself and others, not to mention theinspiration to create a meaningful legacy for humanity.

“The way I treated foodwas a metaphor for my

relationship withmyself, others and life”

“It was never aboutthe weight”Pepé Soomers, whodiscovered The Journey a fewyears ago, describes himself ashaving been “thin and wiry”until his late twenties, whenhe suddenly gained 45 poundsin just over a year – for noapparent reason.

Doctors could find nothingwrong with him, and dietitianshad no clue about how to helphim as he was eating healthily.

Only yo-yo dieting led to significant weight loss, but it wouldalways creep back on. Resorting to meal replacement barsand shakes led to a 30-pound weight loss, but also the lossof most of Pepé’s hair! That was the final straw – no moredieting.

Lighter at the end of the tunnelFortunately, Pepé discovered Stop The Food Fight and, sinceattending, says his weight issues have changed radically. “Icame to realise the whole thing was never about food, butabout issues connected to protecting myself fromemotional harm,” says Pepé, which he now believes led himto gain extra weight.Pepé was able to clearhis issues despite thediscomfort.“Though itwas painful to gothrough the process, itwas easier than draggingthe weight around withme,” he says. Now, Pepé only eats what nourishes his body, and the weight came off until he lost 20kg! “I feel revitalised, energetic, fit, positive and, most of all, full of trust for thefuture. The tension and pressure have gone, and I finally feelfree after years of struggle!”

“I was saved from alife on the streets”As a child, I was sexually abused by mystep father and physically andpsychologically abused by both parents. Bythe time I was 12, I was selling cannabis; by14, I was actually smoking the stuff. I wenton to marry an alcoholic and had sevenchildren. After taking yet another beating, Iran away from my husband, left mychildren with my mother and went toWatford in the hope of being re-housedand to start a new life. But things wentvery wrong and I ended up on the streets, where I lived for about nine years, gettingrespite in night shelters and couch-surfingwhere I could. I too then became analcoholic and abused my body with drugsto numb the pain and suffering I felt. I alsohad a few brushes with the law; in short, Ihad completely lost my way and washeading down a path of destruction.Emotionally I was drained, tired of my

jumbled thoughts about my past andpresent, and fears for the future, pessimistic of ever seeing change... until Imet Barry. Barry Phillips, a Journeypractitioner, helped me completelychanged my life after just one Journeysession. I found a sense of freedom, clarityof mind, acceptance of my past andchildhood, along with forgiveness. I havesince done the process many more timesusing Journey therapy CDs and books toguide me and to find inner strength Inever realised I had. I now want to sharewith others the joy, peace of mind andfreedom from the self, which can beobtained through doing Journeywork.

“Grandad’s cancercleared in just twomonths”I believe a holistic approach combined withdoing Journeywork helped my grandfather,Donald Upton, clear himself of cancer atthe age of 82. Having been diagnosed withthe most aggressive type of prostatecancer, he went into remission within justtwo months thanks to a combination oftherapies. He had always been a pioneer ofalternative approaches, and was on theCouncil for Complementary Medicine andwas one of the founders of a prominentosteopathic college in London. Because ofhis beliefs in the power of the mind andbody to heal itself, he declinedchemotherapy and radiotherapy, insteadgoing to work on himself by beginning atotally raw food diet and doingJourneywork to clear his emotional blocks, just like Brandon did when she cleared heruterine tumour. Within two months ofbeginning this holistic healing programme,he had reduced his cancer down to 13percent, which is deemed full remission. Helooked about 60 years old and was vital, healthy and radiant.

“I’ve re-gained myhealth”Having been diagnosed with cancer in2004, I had a large portion of my sigmoidcolon removed. For the next yeareverything was OK but then in 2005, Ideveloped complications involvingscarring around the titanium staples thathad been used during the surgery. For thenext three years I had to undergo somevery painful procedures to rip the scartissue using an inflatable device (similar toan angioplasty). After nine of these painfulprocedures there was still no end in sight. So, I decided to seek somealternative/complementary healthcare inthe form of visiting a naturopath. Inaddition to making changes to my dietand undertaking a cleanse, my MD atwork suggested I read a book called TheJourney. In September 2008, I attendedmy first Journey Intensive, and onDecember 17th I had my last procedurewith the gastroenterologist and haven'tseen the inside of a hospital since. I'vecontinued to do Journey processes andhave also done other forgiveness work. Both my spiritual and physical health havebeen steadily improving ever since.

“My depressioncompletelyvanished!”In 1997, my husband, Russell, died ofcancer after four years. We’d beentogether almost two decades. The illnesstook a tremendous toll on both of us andour children in the lead up to his death.Russell so wanted to stay alive, yet hisbody was riddled with cancer – he wasso weak. After the funeral Iwas exhausted, wornout from allthe worry

that I had lived with for so long. I wasvulnerable and completely disorientated. Isoon fell into a deep depression. As atrained counsellor/psychologist, I naturallyturned to my profession for help, and sawa counsellor once a week for almost fouryears. I spent most of my time in bed, trying to drown out the never-endingsuicidal thoughts. Someonerecommended Brandon’s book TheJourney to me; as soon as I read it, I knewit was going to help me. I immediatelyfound an accredited Journey practitionerin my home town, went to see her, and injust one session I felt the depression lift.

“This is amazing,” I said, as I felt theemotional trauma from the past fouryears leave my womb, where it hadbeen stored. I thought to myself thatif I could clear something as big asthat then there had to be so muchhope for the healing of the entireplanet. Three sessions later, which Idid all by myself, I was able to stoptaking my depression medication.Since then, I have stayed faithful toJourneywork on a regular basis andkeep clearing more and more things asthey come up. The Journey is the mostempowering set of skills I know.

The Visionary LeadershipAdvanced Programme

Change from the heart

Uncover your own authentic greatness, the innate visionaryleader that lies within, and become an agent of conscioustransformation in your family, career and society.

A message from the programme’sfounder...“Humanity is facing a difficultconundrum: we rely on leadership toorganise and regulate our societies, our

governments, our religions, our cultural and sports groups, ourcorporations, yet every existing model of leadership that exists isdeeply flawed. In every area of our lives, self-interest, greed, corruption, short-term blindness and fear of danger and lack arenot just commonplace, but have often become the norm. Ourtrust in our leaders, those who deeply influence and shape thecontext in which our lives take place, has eroded anddisintegrated, leaving us cynical and despairing.

If humanity is to succeed and thrive, if it is to developwholesomely, something big will have to change. We will needto reappraise who we are, what drives us, what is mostimportant and what we are willing to contribute to changing ourold fear- and greed-driven paradigms. Ultimately, we will needto access a greatness deep in ourselves, a capacity that may havelain dormant all our lives. We will need to wake up to our infinitecapacity to imagine, to envision, to create, to innovate and tolove – not just for the sake of our individual selves, but for thesake of others as an integral part of that same universal self.

The Visionary Leadership program will allow you to uncover andconsciously utilize an authentic greatness that lies within you, agreatness you may have long recognized but may not, until now, have known how to access and use. It is an opportunity to clearout old restrictive conditioning and to explore and practice yourown unique expression of conscious greatness in the company ofothers willing to do the same.

If not you, then who? If not now, when?”

Seven years ago I began tocontemplate how Journeyworkmight be relevant to people in

leadership and the world of business.Requests had been coming in thick andfast about how to use The Journey toolsin a more professional, less typically‘spiritual’ context, and I’d finally run out ofexcuses not to cater for this growingneed. But how would I go about creatingthe content for a new course? I wentaway on solitary retreat for a few monthsto open up, pray, and see what mightarise from the stillness.

Road to discoveryI’d already been doing Journeywork for 13years by that point, 11 of which wereworking full time alongside Brandon, andseven of them teaching The Journey toothers. Yet, despite all my training and innerwork, when I pondered what consciousleadership might entail, I saw clearly that Idid not fully embody its principles.Admitting this truth to myself felt deeplyshameful. In spite of the deep healing andtransformation I had undergone, I still felt Iwas playing small in life, making excuses, playing the resentful victim, and blamingothers for burdening me withresponsibilities that kept my real potentialunder wraps. It was then I realised I’d beenon autopilot, all the while thinking I was inthe groove of self-development, whenreally I was in a rut.

A sharp awakeningOver the years, I had built up anexpectation of what Journeywork coulddo, and ideas about what I thought truth, change, development and freedomlooked like. But, in doing so, I’d grownstale in my progress and had turned awayfrom the mystery and magic of theunexpected. The questions I asked myselfthen I now ask of others: are you in thegroove or in a rut? Are you soaring in

freedom, or are there ways in which youare still playing small? Are you merelyopen to truth, or hungrily embracing it?

The answers provided me with a catalyst. They drove to the surface a strongdetermination to stop, change, open upand surrender with humility to whateverlife wanted to teach me. I now don’trecognise myself from seven years ago; Iam now a new man. I feel more joy, blissand freedom on a daily basis.

The birth of a newprogrammeFrom that experience of innerquestioning, I began to wonder how Icould be of greater service to others. Ibecame a ‘lab rat of consciousness’, so tospeak: actively and enthusiastically seekingout my own issues, facing them head on,

clearing them for good and findinggreater levels of freedom. This process ledto the creation of the VisionaryLeadership programme, which ispresented around the world withamazing results, helping people releasetheir unconscious limitations, and touncover their greatness and leadershippotential. JOURNEY IN PRACTISE

Every day I witness the deep, lastingtransformation of the people whocome to see me in my practice as a

clinical psychologist in Canada. I seepeople freeing themselves fromdepression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem,debilitating mood disorders, physicalailments such as IBS, migraines and evencancer. I know what the Journey can dofor others, and have alsowitnessed itsprofound effects formyself. So, when I wasasked to pen somehealing stories aboutJourneywork, I wasn’tquite sure where tobegin, as the tales werenumerous! For starters, there was the client whocleared herself of breast cancerin just two processes; one whosuffered from sexual impotence foryears but was able to resume anormal sex life after he competed twoJourney processes; the person who hadpanic attacks and couldn’t sleep, who feltinstant relief and change after the firstsession; and the client who was sodepressed they could not get out of bedfor weeks, who, after Journeywork, became fully functional and well. Therewas also the lady completely obsessedwith and unable to let go of a pastrelationship, who managed to forgive andmove on; a woman distraught by and indenial of her mother's terminal illness, who, after a Journey process, could attendto her mum and be there to hold herhand as she passed; the women sufferingwith fibromyalgia who had all becomepain free; and a client whose decade ofchronic hemorrhoid bleeding cleared upafter we worked on seemingly ‘unrelated’issues. I could share countless otherhealing stories of change, transformationand healing on a physical, emotional and

spiritual plane. All are worthy of a page inthemselves, but should I tell my own tale,I wondered?

From sceptic toconvertFor me, The Journey enabled me to finallyrelease myself from the relentless, yetsubtle, critical inner voice that kept tellingme I was never good or worthy enough,no matter what I did or how much Isucceeded.

Until I did TheJourney, I thoughtI had already‘cleared my shit’, topardon the phrase. Beinga fervent believer ofchange coming from within, Ihad, over the years, undergoneextensive psychological treatmentand carried out continuous trainingin self-development fields. I had beenin the client chair many times and wasconstantly willing to look at myself to

improve in some way. But, somehow Iknew there was more. So, when threepeople, in just two days, mentioned thatThe Journey workshop was coming toOttawa, where I live, I took that as a signand registered. Already I felt a pull, a littlevoice inside saying it was going to changemy life, and boy did it!

The weekend was a revelation. I wentalong with no expectations; I was aloof; Ihadn’t even read Brandon’s book. I wasinitially a little overwhelmed by theintensity of the love in the room, even inthe way I was welcomed. My ever-protective mind, full of fear, startedwondering whether I’d stumbled intosome sort of spiritual cult; after all, I’dseen many things in my 20 years workingin hospitals, schools, and attendingworkshops. However, once my fearssubsided I felt and lived the magic alongwith everyone else. The weekend wasamazing and I finally made contact withthe free, non-judgmental part of me that, though I’d glimpsed before, I’d never beenable to access whenever I liked. TheJourney gave me a tool, not just had arandom experience, to enable me to getback to that state of freedom; a tool sopowerful it felt like having access to amagic wand. From that weekend, suchwas the change in my very being, Idecided to enroll on the training course

to become a certified JourneyPractitioner!

Helping others findfreedom at lastIn the meantime, I began to integrate thetools and processes into my psychologypractice, with wondrous results.

Clients were able to reach down to whatwe call their ‘source’, which is a deep, freepart of themselves, and start to heal. Theywere releasing block and stuck emotionsfrom the past, often through forgivenessof themselves and others. Someexperienced spontaneous healing; somegot better gradually. I myself am nowfreer from those critical voices, whichallows me truly to be myself as I guideothers on their paths of transformation. My daughter, now 24, used to help out inmy practice by taking down the answerphone messages. She was dumbfoundedby the countless calls of gratitude Ireceived. One day she asked me, with anequal measure of curiosity and scepticism,

“Are you God or what? People love youso much!” It was flattering but in reality, people were in love with the freedomthey had found, and were simply gratefulto have been introduced or awakened totheir infinite potential.

I am glad that there is a tool to helppeople fully access the unlimited potentialthat exists in us all; this tool, which youwill learn on The Journey Intensive, is vastenough to cover all human experiencesand emotions, clear or heal themcompletely, then restore meaning anddignity to even the most ‘damaged’ ofsouls. I share these stories here, includingmy own, with the hope of spreading theword about The Journey and its amazing, transformative abilities. Whatever youmay be suffering with or from in your life, know that there is a path to healing. I amliving proof, as are my clients.

JOURNEY WORLD

Sometimes it’s hard to believe it’sbeen 15 years since I left myengineering profession in Singapore

to set up homes for underprivilegedchildren in Lucknow, India. The safe house, called Apna Ghar, was established byCOME (Children of Mother Earth), andstarted off with just seven kids; we nowhouse more than 200. There are orphans, kids who’ve been abandoned, thosewhose parents might be sex workers, orchildren who just ended up living on thestreet. Apna Ghar offers them anenvironment where love and care flows, and it gives me great satisfaction towitness their transformation.

Bearing deepemotional scarsLights out is around 9pm each evening. The kids have a habit of falling asleep allover the place, with their quilts orcomforters strewn about, so I like to visiteach one to rearrange their pillows andtuck them in, just like a loving father would. One night, during the winter of 2006, I waspuzzled to see then six-year-old Bhaveshwide awake, gazing at the ceiling. Before Icould ask him a question, he fell into myarms, sobbing. Tears flowed with intensityand, as he clung to me, he whispered, “I ammissing my mother.” I embraced him withall my love and compassion, wiping histears. After an hour, he slept, but I was stillwide awake, thinking about how we couldbetter serve the needs of these childrenwith such diverse backgrounds. I beganchecking on other children and wassurprised to find about a fifth of thempretended to be asleep, their issues oftentroubling them during the night. Asidefrom the psychological and emotionalsupport we had been providing, these kidsclearly needed some sort of additionalemotional support. But what exactly?

Answered prayersThe answers came from Ms Siang Hui Tay,a young documentarian from Singaporewho did The Journey Advanced retreatsome years ago in Australia; Ms Tayconnected our project with The Journey,; a team of workers, who had been travelingthrough India on a Satsang pilgrimage, arrived on our doorstep a few monthslater. Those who spoke Hindi spent timedoing Journeywork with the children, andit made an immediate, positive impact: thekids were happier after just one process. Iwanted to know more, so decided toexperience the work for myself on aJourney Intensive in Sydney. On the lastday of the Advanced Skills workshop, oneof the trainers asked me what I’d gainedfrom the course; “A whole new world,”was my answer.

Shedding theirpainful pastOn my return to India, I began doingJourneywork with the children. It wasamazing to see them start opening up.Many painful secrets and bottled emotionswere released. The children have very sad, abusive and lonely pasts due to lives on thestreets, begging, stealing and workingwithout pay, suffering physical and mentalabuse almost every day. During the‘campfire’ part of the process (where youimagine sitting at a campfire and bringing tomind those who have wronged you insome way) there were many ‘culprits’, andsometimes it took 2-3 hours to completethe process. Their stories often made mecry, and I wondered how these innocent, tender beings withstood such pain andagony. Finally, little Bhavesh revealed his truestory. On arrival at the safe house, he’dbriefly told us his father was an alcoholicand abusive, and that his mother passed

away when he was five. He could onlyremember ‘Nandi Gram’, a railway stationin West Bengal where he boarded a trainto nowhere and ended up at Gorakhpur.During his process he remembered thewhole picture, including how his drunkenfather stabbed his mother to death. Herecalled how frightened he was and howhe ran away to avoid his dad. He weptmany times during the process and it wastough for us to hear.

Bhavesh was much better after doingJourney work, and became more outgoing, cheerful and playful. I hope, with moreprocess work, he will get even better. I havegiven Journey processes to some of thecaretakers at Apna Ghar, and now they arevery careful when giving instructions to thechildren. They explain things in detail, toavoid misunderstandings, which has beenvery helpful. I am forever grateful to TheJourney and it’s team of amazingpractitioners for all their generous support, and wish to continue the positive work atApna Ghar to help even more youngsterswho are victims of circumstance.

When Ravi’s first email arrivedat our offices, pleading forhelp, we were all moved to

tears,” remembers Megan Bardsley, aJourney worker at the time. MD KevinBillett and members of the team, including Megan and Tina, happened tobe in India on a pilgrimage and so wentto meet Ravi and the children. “Theexperience of meeting all the childrenbroke our hearts, especially hearingPooja's tale,” says Megan.

Turned away by herown familyPooja was seven years old when she firstwent to live at Apna Ghar. Two weeksbefore, her mother had been “cancelled”,she said, meaning she had been stabbed, leaving Pooja, her five-year old brother, and three-year old sister without parents. The day of the stabbing, Pooja and herbrother went to their mother’sworkplace, found her injured, flaggeddown a two-wheeler rickshaw, and tookher to the hospital while she was stillalive, but they were turned away becauseof poverty and social status. The driver ofthe rickshaw took pity on the childrenand said they could use the rickshaw forthe night. Pooja and her brother cartedtheir mother to another hospital, where

she was bandaged but not admitted. There, Pooja was told to take her motherhome to die. Using the rickshaw, thebrother and sister struggled home, wheretheir beloved mother mother passesaway before morning.

“Pooja told us how she used all themoney she had saved to bury hermother, since they could not afford acremation,” says Tina. “At the funeral, shebegged her relatives to take her and hersiblings in, promising to be well behaved. No one one did. “It was Ravi Rai whotook Pooja and her siblings in, gave thema home, a family, a life, lots of love, andeverything a child needs to grow and toshine,” says Tina.

From sorry to joyPooja’s story brought everyone in theroom to tears. “But the joy that emanatedfrom the room after she and the otherchildren had completed theirJourneywork blew the roof off the place! We all wept at the amazing change,”recalls Megan. “I felt extra blessed as

Pooja ran and hugged me with such loveand intensity; I don’t know who washugging more, me or her!” Out of adesire to support Ravi and his work, andinspired by the young girl’stransformation, the Pooja Project wasborn: a CD compilation of beautiful musicplayed at advanced retreats, withproceeds going towards JourneyOutreach children programmes. JOURNEY WORLD

Areas of South Africa can be rifewith violence, rape, substanceabuse and poverty. Alexandra, a

township in the Gauteng province ofJohannesburg, is no exception, and manychildren there are vulnerable. Pass ratesin schools are low, and anger andaggression are commonplace. Althoughcircumstances are often bleak, hope andpeace have been brought into the heartsof children at the Kwa-BhekilangaSecondary School, thanks to threeJourney practitioners. Junior Morudu,Juditte Nthabiseng Schlebusch and JayBhana set up the Alexandra SchoolsProject in 2008 to help children andsome adults release their past pain andbreak through to their inner brilliance.

Reducing crime andteen pregnanciesCovering five grade levels (age 8-12), thepractitioners give Journeywork to eachclass as a group, once a week. Studentswho participate may have been: rapedand/or abused, victims or witnesses ofattempted murders, attacked andassaulted, stigmatised by chronic physicalconditions such as epilepsy, or haveattempted suicide. Since the projectbegan, teachers have reported reducedviolence, less drug use, fewer pregnancies, improved learning and behavior in andout of class, and higher self-esteem in

their students. One teacher said: “If thisprogramme can get through to ourlearners, we can have violence-freeschools and good citizens.” Anothercommented: “Every year, there arepregnancies in each class from grades 10-12. My class (where The Journey is doneregularly) makes me very proud becausenone of them have become pregnant thisyear (2010).”

No more fightingOne student in particular stood out forhis unbelievable turnaround. “Prior todoing The Journey, he was coming toschool high on drugs, totally unkempt andwas living on the streets,” said oneteacher, “but after doing the work he wasback at school, sober every day, and livingat home once more.” The AlexandraSchools Project is recognised by thecountry’s Department of Education asbeing the “most important tool forintervention” for traumatised, underperforming or difficult learners.

But it’s not just teachers who notice vastimprovements – the kids realise theyhave changed, too. One admitted: “BeforeI did The Journey, my temper was veryshort. I used to fight against anyone whodisturbed me. After The Journey, I got theconfidence to control my temper. Now Italk instead of fight.” Another said: “I was athief and a fighter, a drunk and a liar. I hadno respect. I called myself a bad boy.Through doing The Journey, I haveforgiven my parents and myself. I am nowjoyous – not a ‘bad boy’.” These are just afew examples of how The Journey is

impacting the lives of those whosefutures might otherwise be bleak. Thework is clearly making a difference bybringing joy, peace and love into thehearts of those in challenging situations, but additional funds are still needed toallow the programme to reach out tomore young people in South Africa.

A school in mourningThe Journeywork was really put tothe test in October 2010 when atragic road accident killed twopeople, one of whom was a student, outside the Kwa-BhekilangaSecondary School in Alexandra. Tohelp those who were traumatised bythe event, a group bereavementprocess was carried out during anassembly, attended by educators, students and psychologists from theDepartment of Education. One ofthe psychologists was so impressed, she decided to attend a JourneyIntensive and the Advanced Skillsworkshop. Since then, she has takenbereavement processes into otherschools.

JOURNEY WORLD

Iwant to learn this method!” was thefirst thing I said to myself after mymother-in-law gave me Brandon Bays’

book The Journey. It had only taken me aweekend to read, and I could barely waitfor the first Journey Intensive to arrive inIsrael, where I lived. That was back in2008, and it was Brandon herself leadingthe seminar. I knew straight away therewas something special and authentichappening, both within me and TheJourney community as a whole, and feltthere was a mission waiting for me toundertake. After the Intensive, I signed upfor the Journey Practitioner Programme. Iwas quite nervous as the courseapproached, and questions filled my mindabout where it was going to lead me.Almost missing my flight to Germany, where the course was held, almost hadme in doubts. Was it a sign not to go? But,with faith, I put one foot in front of theother and let myself be guided...

A vision of freedomDuring the week, I had a most profoundJourney process where I saw myselfbreaking the shackles of slavery anddelivering myself to freedom, with Mosesas my mentor, no less! I then saw a biggervision for Israel: me guiding an entirenation to freedom! This became burnedinto my mind’s eye, and was so deep andprofound I can still see it today. My life’spurpose continued to unfold throughoutthe week, and though my job was at theIsraeli Ministry of Education, my visiongrew into how The Journey could be usedby counsellors, education ministers andteachers throughout all of the country.Intuition told me to begin with adults, asthat would be the fastest way to connectwith a multitude of children. I was soexcited and on a high about this vision!

Straight toworkWhen I returned home, I toldpeople about my vision. As partof course work for thePractitioners programme, I hadto conduct 48 one-to-oneJourney processes as case studies. Suddenly, people who had heard of my experienceshowed up in droves, and, in no time at all,I’d completed all my processes and sharedwith each person my vision for the IsraeliTeachers and Education Counsellors. Thanks to help from others, I ended up being given the chance to talkat an Education Ministry conference aboutthe benefits of The Journey. The day arrived– October 1st, 2008 – for me to presentmy findings. I wasn’t expecting many toattend, especially as it it was solely foreducators and teachers, and I’d been sobusy in the run up that I’d not had achance to promote the event. But, to myshock and surprise, 550 people showed up!Words couldn’t express how humbled Ifelt. Those in attendance said they couldreally see my passion for The Journey andmy vision for Israel, and it really cementedin my mind the possibilities of fulfilling mylife’s purpose.

A bright futureSince that wonderful day six years ago, somany exciting things have happened. TheMinistry of Education enquired aboutincorporating The Journey into educationprogrammes; counsellors have set upgroups to bring The Journey to bothstudents and teachers, much to my delightand amazement. Some of the commentsreceived from teachers who’ve undertakenthis work have been extremely

encouraging. One said they were a “muchbetter community” with “so much love inour schools now”. One teacher, Tal, has setup a ‘corner for emotions’ in her classroom. It contains balloons on which she writewords such as anger, fear, sadness, etc. Nextto this is an aquarium containing a diamond.During the day, when pupils feel upset, theycan drop their emotion into the water andreturn to their seat silently. At the end ofeach day, Tal holds a discussion for pupils toshare the emotions from the day, followedby a meditation to uncover what wasbeneath the negative emotion. Finally, theyempty the water, clean the diamond, and fillthe tank with clean water to start the nextday afresh. For the past three years, therehave been open workshops held for alleducational workers, many of whom reportincreased self-belief both for their studentsand themselves, including a better ability tomanage any classroom crises. The future islooking bright, with plans to developJourney programmes within the healthsector. A connection has already been madewith the association called Sons ofAbraham, which develops projects topromote peaceful co-existence betweenthe Hebrew and Arabic people.

AROUND THE WORLD

Stress and burnout are high on thelist of 21st century maladies, and aJourney practitioner duo in The

Netherlands is helping governmentemployees return to work after periodsof stress-related absence. In 2008,Barbara Kok and Victor Overmarsestablished The Burnout Poli, a treatmentcentre in Voorburg, which won a contractto supply Journeywork to employeesfrom all ministries in the Netherlandssuffering from burnout or other stress-related illnesses. The centre offers atherapy based on three pillars: mentalcoaching, emotional therapy and physicaltreatment by an osteopath. Theemotional therapy part is based onJourneywork, which, say the practitioners,is making a real difference by going

beyond what conventional treatmentscan offer. In a relatively short time period, huge results are being achieved, accordingto the practitioners: the recovery time isquick and there is next to no incidence ofrelapse. Twelve governmentaldepartments now offer the triple therapypackage to their employees as well asother institutions and companiesthroughout the Netherlands. “We noticedthat with stress-related health problems, talking therapies alone are not thesolution,” said Journey PractitionersBarbara and Victor. “If you really want torecover, you have to find the underlyingcauses of stress and clear them out at thedeepest level, which allows for consistentand lasting health results,” they added.

“People undergo a wonderful personalliberation. Not only are they empoweredto return to work, but they feel genuinelyhappy and in touch with their authenticselves.”

In 2006, a group of practitionervolunteers introduced Journeywork tofemale prisoners of Westville Prison in

Durban, South Africa. Due to the growthand success of the programme, anadditional pilot programme andpartnership was set up with the

Department of Correctional Services towork with victims of crime. Having passedquality assurance, the programme gainedaccreditation from the Department ofCorrectional Services (DCS) in Durban.Rahila Khan, prison project leader, recounts his tale of how the programmeworked for one inmate, who not onlyhealed her mental but physical illnesses:“Some years back I received a verymoving letter from a woman who hadbeen incarcerated for life in the Durbancorrectional facility. She was in for murder, which had happened while defending herchild against violent physical attacks fromher husband. While in prison, she hadcontracted Hepatitis C, which hadbecome very advanced; she had been toldshe would die an early death. In her lettershe pleaded for us to continue sendingJourney Practitioners into the prisons.

Well, after just three months and three fullJourney processes, her blood count levelswere shown to be in the normal rangeand she was pronounced medically curedof her illness! “She later wrote to mesaying that although she would neverleave the prison, nor get the chance towatch her children grow up, she felt ‘morefree now’ than she ever had been on theoutside.” Mr Pooben Pillay, from the Officeof Education and Training at theDepartment of Correctional Services inSouth Africa, was also singing the praisesof the Journey programme, encouragingits continuation. “Offenders who wereconsidered challenging, transformed theirlives from having been addicted toprescribed medication, in poor state ofmental health, in poor general conduct, tolives full of hope, purpose andconfidence,” he said.

REAL LIFE

Are you tired of playing small in life?Of feeling overwhelmed by aseemingly endless ‘to do’ list that

saps your energy and creativity? If you’reconstantly trying to be superwoman yetfeel miserable, unfulfilled and worn out, thenew All-European JourneyWoman Retreatcould help you regain access to a pool ofinnate, powerful feminine intuition that’sburied deep inside you. Senior Journeypractitioners Bettina Hallifax and ArianeSchurmann host the new JourneyWomanretreat this October in The Netherlands, and say it’s for any woman irrespective oflanguage, background or conditioning.“There is a magic that happens whenwomen come together and are open; it’slike we effortlessly remember a temporarilyforgotten language deep within our bones,”says Bettina. Both presenters stronglybelieve that all transformation, whether it’smore wealth, better health or happierrelationships, begins within. But, sometimeswe are not even aware of the issues andsabotaging beliefs that hold us back. “Theseissues prevent us from receiving all theblessings we deserve,” says Ariane, whothinks thousands of years of femalerepression are stored in our collectiveconsciousness. “If these unconscious beliefsare not addressed, we block off abundance, health, expression and creativity. We mightcontinue the search, reading books andfollowing spiritual masters, yet it’s the divinewoman within that is calling us home!”

How it all beganIn 2008, Bettina and Ariane were delegatesat the first European JourneyWomanretreat, and were so moved andtransformed by the event that they wentaway and, individually, exploredJourneywork within their own femalegroups and one-to-one sessions. Thisautumn, they come together tocollaborate on the biggest JourneyWomanevent in history. Here, they recall theirindividual JourneyWoman experiences.

Bettina’sstory…Prior to JourneyWoman, Ithought I was a privileged,

free and fully emancipated woman – aleader in my chosen profession. I felt noneed to work on ‘women’s stuff ’, and hadno conscious recollection of issues mymother, grandmother and great-grandmother had faced and unwittinglypassed on to me. So, it was a shock todiscover that, deeply hidden away, I had awhole web of belief systems aroundrelationships with other women, inferioritycomplexes and hidden ‘certainties’ aboutwhat life as a woman must be like. I was, unconsciously, repeating ancient unhealthypatterns from my ancestors. I was puttingmyself second, playing small and wasn’t freeat all! Once I’d opened up to this, I realisedI actually needed to be in a supportiveenvironment with other women to accessand remove these unhealthy patterns. Somuch was revealed to me in this firstretreat; I let go of envy, rage and otherhidden emotions, mainly around not beinga mother. I came to a place of peace andcompletion, deeply rooted in my full power. After the retreat, my whole being changed.Journeywork has enriched my lifeenormously, as has learning to listen to mybody and be in an atmosphere ofacceptance with other women.

Ariane’sstory…It wasn’t until I’d read theJourneyWoman flier for the

fifth time that I realised I hadn’t felt fulfilledand joyful in as long as I could remember. So, I booked a place for myself and mydaughter, Ninya. Boy, were we in for a ride!I discovered I’d had been living on maleenergy. Though I was a strong woman, Ihad been in leadership roles my whole lifeand didn’t really understand or knowwhat being a woman actually meant. I wasquick to judge other women as ‘weak’,even though inside I was burning out froma total lack of soft, feminine energy. At theretreat, I discovered my inner truth for thefirst time, and learned how to speak thattruth then live it. My whole life has nowchanged for the better. Joy has returnedto my body and soul, and I feel free to bea woman in a woman’s body. What’smore, I found my life’s calling and thecourage to move to the next level. To thisday I still experience the fulfilment of thatretreat, and – the biggest gift of all – mydaughter and I transcended theconditioned ‘mother/daughter’ roles andnow live in harmony and freedom. We’veeven started our own company together! If you feel drawn to creating lastingchange and finding inner fulfilment, whynot sign up for the biggestJourneyWoman retreat of all time? Itmight just change your life.

Discover the Mystery that Lies Within

Many of the issues we face as women are ingrained at a cellular level, having been passed on from

generation to generation. The spoken and unspoken challenges we face as women have become part of our

consciousness and at times hold us to a way of life which actually limits our own natural way of being.

JourneyWoman is your key to discovering the real feminine freedom that lies within.

• Experience the divine presence of the real you - a woman in all her glory, power, strength, beauty,

presence and grace

• Cut through the concepts of what it means to be a woman and clear these limiting patterns out at the level

of consciousness.

• Open into your true female essence. You'll leave enriched, having experienced what this new definition of

the feminine is, and begin living your life, free to soar in all your womanly glory.

Bettina: After the first Journey Woman

Retreat my whole posture changed,

inside and out. The calling to explore

deeper in a sacred female circle, accessing

and uncovering what a “heavy burden from the

past” we all carry in our subconscious became

louder and louder! Exploring with, inviting in and

trusting other women enriched my life enormously!

Learning to listen to my body and being in a circle

where everything is allowed helped me to explore

all sides of me.

Ariane: The greatest benefit was the joy

that returned to my body and soul, the

freedom I regained and the permission I

gave myself to be myself, a woman in a

woman’s body. I found my life’s calling and the

courage to move to the next level. My fulfilment

levels were boosted a thousand percent and are long

lasting, and the biggest gift of all – my daughter and

I went beyond the conditioned mother and daughter

roles and are now living in harmony and freedom –

even starting a company together as soul sisters!
