Liverpool Sound City: The final countdown May 17 2010 by Jade Wright, Liverpool Echo

MUSICIANS and music fans are gearing up for the launch of Liverpool Sound City.

With more than 400 bands playing across 35 stages to 30,000 people, the city is preparing for a four-day party.

Acts ranging from British rapper and grime superstar Tinchy Stryder to pop starlet Paloma Faith and Mercury prize-winner Speech Debelle will headline the festival, with more than 100 up-and-coming local bands ready to shine.

There will also be sets from indie legends The Fall and rising stars The Maccabees and Delphic, as well as a St George s Hall performance from Echo And The Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch. Now in its third year, the festival has expanded each time.

Festival director David Pichilingi said: This is the biggest and best Sound City yet.

Bands now want to come to Liverpool to play in front of a world- class audience consisting of some of the key players from the international music business.

In just three years, Liverpool Sound City has grown and seen significant interest to become one of the most sought-after music festivals in the world today.

As well as the concerts, Sound City is much more than just a music festival, with film screenings, photography exhibitions, Q&A sessions and football tournaments.

There will also be more than 60 speakers and 1,000 delegates taking part in the festival s music business conference at the Hilton and Hard Days Night hotels.

The keynote speaker at the conference is the man who set up Sire Records, the legendary Seymour Stein.

As well as signing Madonna, the world s most successful female artist, he also single-handedly changed the direction of garage bands.
