The dock was originally built toaccommodate sailing ships with a cargocapacity of up to 1,000 tons, but by the turnof the 20th century only 7% of ships using theport were sailing ships. The dock's days werenumbered and it was finally closed in 1972.

The refurbishment of Albert Dock wascarried out by the Arrowcroft Group in theearly 80s. Plans were prepared in 1982, workbegan in 1983 and the first phase was openedin 1984 in time for the arrival of the TallShips Race and the International GardenFestival.

Acareful plan is needed when youvisit Liverpool, or you arecertain to miss some of the mostinteresting parts. You would

need to take a month off work to experience allthe attractions the city has to offer.

So, you want a museum? Which onewould that be then? Would it be the MaritimeMuseum or perhaps the World Museum? Waita minute, was it the Slavery Museum orpossibly the Museum of Liverpool? A certainquartet was ‘quite’ successful in the 1960s, somaybe you want to find out more about themin the Beatles Museum? I think you can seewhat we are getting at. There is just so much todo and so much variety, so the aforementionedplan really is a good idea.

Everywhere you walk you experiencehistory. From the Grade I and Grade II listedbuildings throughout the city (second only in

number to London in the UK) to theenchanting waterfront highlighting Liverpool’smaritime heritage as one of the world’s mostimportant cities.

You can’t miss the Albert Dock, acomplex of restored dock buildings andwarehouses which hosts an abundance ofshops, coffee bars, restaurants, pubs, clubs andmuseums. It’s here where The Beatles StoryMuseum is housed.

Once you have finished in the BeatlesMuseum, take a stroll back across to the citycentre and see where it all started for the ‘FabFour’. Walk down Matthew Street and see thefamous Cavern Club where they made theirname.

We hope you enjoy Liverpool’s wonderfulattractions and that this section of ourmagazine helps to enhance that enjoyment.

The variety of internationalcuisine in Liverpool is endless asyou would expect from acosmopolitan city, but while you

are here, you really should try some of the localdelicacies that the city is famed for.

Traditionally, food in the UK is centredaround meat dishes including Beef, Pork,Chicken and Lamb and some well knownspecialities such as Bubble and Squeak, Toad inThe Hole and Yorkshire Pudding, but while youare in Liverpool you just have to try the maindish of the city, ‘Scouse’. Basically a localversion of Irish stew, ingredients includepotatoes, carrots, lamb, onions and spices, andit is served with a cob of bread. The dishbecame so synonymous with the city that localshave become known as ‘Scousers’ throughoutthe country.

Various strange sounding sandwiches, orin Liverpool better known as a ‘Butty’ shouldalso be sampled. Why not try a Chip Butty or

a Sugar Butty or even a Conny Onny Butty. The latter is a bizarre concoction containingcondensed milk.

If you want something sweet then try alocal black and white striped toffee with a sugarcoated covering and a minty flavour called the‘Everton Mint’. Developed in Liverpool morethan 100 years ago and still to this day throwninto the crowd at every Everton Football Clubmatch, the mint became so popular that theEverton club became internationally famous fortheir nickname of ‘The Toffees’.

If local dishes don’t tickle your fancy, there is no need to worry. The city has somewonderful international restaurants and manyof them are featured in this section of ourmagazine.

Whether it be Chinese, Italian, Indian oralmost any other national cuisine, we arecertain that whatever your particular favouritemay be, Liverpool will satisfy your taste budsperfectly. Bon Appetit!

The quirky cocktail bar onHarrington Street (opposite theHard Days Night Hotel)challenges the perception thatcheap cocktails constitute lowquality drinks, and conductsbusiness in an honest andphilanthropic manner.

Owner Mark said "We operate in adifferent way to the chains. We offer very lowprices for a city centre venue, but still use high-end brands in our food and drinks. Our regularssay that this is what makes the bar unique. That, and a warm reception, classy atmosphereand Rat Pack tunes in the air.”

The Ethical Glass offers a place to go afterwork, meet friends, or just a really cool hangout with strong drinks, and quality-over-quantity food. With no sports screens, alcopops

or karaoke, you'll be amongst the right crowd ina relaxed ambiance.

Mark continued "I wanted to createsomething different. Providing a personal touchand bringing back the values of the bar tenderfrom the good old days. I want people to knowwhat to expect at The Ethical Glass. We don'tuse gimmicks, fudged 2-for-1 promotions, pintsat £1.70, nor Blossom Hill – just quality brandsat honest prices."

On entering the bar you get a warm, homely feeling and an expectation that youwon't be met by groups of rowdy drunks on astag party. So it's ideal for that after workcatch-up drink, a meeting place for a group offriends or a lunch date.

Public Transport

The Public transport system is run by MerseyTravel and is usually very reliable. Trains, buses andferries run frequently throughout the day and thereis also a night-bus service.

The easiest way to get around is by theexcellent Merseyrail system which links mostsuburban areas to the city centre.

The two main bus stations can be found on

Roe Street and Paradise Street. Buses are frequentacross the whole city and amongst the cheapest inthe country.

The cheapest and most convenient way to getaround is to buy a Saveaway ticket which gives you24 hours unlimited journeys on any train or bus inLiverpool, Wirral or the wider Merseyside area. Theyare available from newsagents, railway stations andbus stations.

There is also an underground system thatoperates between Liverpool’s four main train stations(Lime Street, Central Station, James Street andMoorfields).

The quickest way to get to the other side ofthe river is by Merseyrail but for outstanding viewsof the city, we recommend that you catch one of thefamous Mersey Ferries from Pier Head.

Mersey Travel also combine public transportwith various deals on visitor attractions, combinedtravel and entry promotions, and other partneroffers, making public transport part of your Liverpooladventure. For more details, visit their website at:www.merseytravel.gov.uk.

Financially the world is still in crisisand ‘The Recession’ is affecting themajority of countries. Even Asiaand The Arab States are not as

buoyant as they were, but that is due toTechnologies and Oil respectively.

Britain is still deep in a financiallyturbulent situation, with opinions swingingfrom a Double Dip Recession is around thecorner, to we are at the start of the Fight BackTo Recovery?

For a number of reasons, Liverpoolappears to have weathered this financial storma lot better than most cities, one of the reasonsbeing, that the Scousers are a resilient lot.

Financial indications in 2007 showed thatwe were at the end of several years of growthand therefore most cities and businesses startedto prepare for hard times ahead. However, nobody knew they would be as bad as theyhave been, or how long it was going to affectthe economy.

While most cities were bracingthemselves for difficult times, Liverpool waspreparing to be the Capital Of Culture in 2008.That particular year was a great one for thecity, not only financially, but because it reallyput Liverpool on the cultural map of the world.

Even now, the city is still benefiting from thatprestigious title.

Following this, the landscape of the citystarted to change courtesy of The ThreeGraces, Liverpool 1 Shopping Centre, TheCruise Ship Terminal and The Eye. Add to thatnumerous high class apartments and hotelsbeing built and it’s easy to understand whythese changes brought more prosperity to theinfrastructure of the city.

Another great financial uplift has comefrom the Education Sector. The Universitiesand Colleges have made themselves sodesirable, that the increase in foreign studentsstudying and living here really has madeLiverpool a very popular ‘University City’.

The financial effect this has on any citycannot be underestimated. Liverpool knowsthat, and we intend to look after our studentswell. In fact, the amount of students who endup living here permanently is increasing everyyear.

Overall, Liverpool has weathered thestormy seas of financial crisis better than manycities and it appears that is going to continue.Yes, there will be some casualties along the way,but we are a sturdy lot in this city and willalways find a way to fight back!
