Wealthy Victorians builtimpressive conservatories toenhance their homes andmake statements about theirposition in society.

While some people might havea greenhouse in their back yard orgarden to grow tomatoes and houseplants, the rich could afford to in-dulge their tastes in more elaboratestructures.

A century ago many villas andmansions in south Liverpool boast-ed beautiful conservatories.

Unlike today, they were made of

wood and metal. They aimed to pro-tect plants from the cold as well asprovide havens for family andguests.

Most were connected to thehouse, like today, but sometimestook on huge proportions. The con-servatory at Palmyra in AigburthVale was almost as big as the mainhouse.

Other impressive examples wereat Crofton, in Sudley Road, andHolmstead near Mossley HillChurch.

The conservatory at Sudley

House, now an artgallery, was rebuilt afew years ago using tra-di t ional methods.Sudley, like otherneighbouring big hous-es, once featured ex-tensive greenhouses toprovide food and flow-ers throughout the year.

Sefton Park’s PalmHouse is a conserva-tory on a massive scale, dwarfing even thelargest domestic ver-sions. Red granite wasbrought from the Isleof Mull to support thecast iron and steelstructure containing 20tons of glass.

Opened in 1896 andheated by two big boil-ers, it cost a total of£10,000 including theplants.

the heat of the hothouse or stove.“The only distinction between a

conservatory and a greenhouse isthat in the former the plants growin borders of earth; in the latter theyare in pots.”

In warmer parts of the country, the roof and sides were capable ofbeing removed in summer.

CHILDWALL COMMUNITYASSOCIATION

A new group hasbeen establishedto try and makeChildwall a betterplace to live, workand play.

Initially, they cametogether as a result ofpublic opposition tothe plans by HopeUniversity to close offTaggart Avenue. Thisled to a massive peti-tion and was success-ful in getting it stopped.Following on fromthis, some of the resi-dents decided that theyneeded to create anAssociation to includelocal residents, busi-nesses and partneragencies.

A n i n t e r i mC o m m i t t e e w a sformed and, from this,a public meeting washeld at the end ofMarch at the TennisClub on DunbabinRoad to formalise it.This was well-attend-ed despite the bitterlycold and snowy weath-er.

The Chair of thisnew initiative, MrEddie Fearns of OultonRoad says: “This newAssociation is the firsto f i t s k i n d f o rChildwall and, per-haps, not before time.

THE PALM HOUSE, SEFTON PARKHolly Lodge will beexhibiting in ThePalm House from the18th June until the20th June, and youare invited to a Coffeeand Croissant morn-ing on 20th June toenjoy the exhibition, meet our staff, vol-unteers, board andgardener.

You are also invited tocontribute towards theexhibition! Holly Lodge

will be yarn bombing ourtrees, which involvesk n i t t i n g n u m e r o u ssquares and then sewingthem together to make acover for some of ourtrees. Would you like toknit some squares to beincluded in this fantasticdisplay? If so pleasesend your squares intoThe Palm House no lat-er than 3rd June 2013 andwe will pass them on toHolly Lodge to includethem in their display.

Although we firstcame together to stopthe road closure, thereare many more thingswe’d like to see im-proved, includingparking issues and thegeneral upkeep of thearea. We want to workpositively with the lo-cal ward councillors, the Police and otherneighbourhood agen-cies to tackle these forthe benefit of all theresidents, both nowand in the future”.

The staff at The Palm Houseare very excited about this ex-hibition and looking forward toseeing our own knitted squaresbeing part of something beau-tiful too! We look forward to re-ceiving your knitted squares

and seeing you on 20th June. Many thanks from all The

STRANGE TALES

by AntonValdemart

The door waslong familiar tohim and he won-dered what laybehind this woodand iron portal atthe base of thestone tower.

Roger sometimespaused by the door’sshadowy, forbiddingpresence. Once he hadgingerly given it a push– there was no handle– but it had not yield-ed.

At difficult times hefound himself lookingat the door. The pastyear had been chal-lenging: a new job, adisastrous love affairand financial worries.

Roger was very low-spirited that Sundaymorning and took oneof his customary walksin an attempt to refresh

LOST KEYSREPLACED

his soul.He strode out across

the park, beset by yap-ping dogs and dis-tracted people talkingaimlessly on mobilephones. Soon he foundhimself staring at thedoor.

He gasped in disbe-lief – a tiny gap re-vealed that it was open.Roger stepped forwardand pushed it firmly. The door creaked opento reveal a gloomyroom lit only by a tinywindow.

The door closed be-hind him of its own ac-cord. It took a few sec-onds for his eyes to getused to the gloom.

He saw a man star-ing at him from a darkcorner. The man satbolt upright and worean old-fashioned uni-form and peaked capmarked Guide. Morealarming was his pale, cadaverous face cov-ered – like his uniform– with cobwebs.

“ I ’ l l show youaround, sir,” he saidwithout introductionor pleasantries.

Pointing to the spi-ral staircase going upthe tower he said: “Upthere is what may be”.

Then, turning stiffly,he nodded to anotherdoorway in a murkycorner: “Down there iswhat will be.”

Roger followed theGuide up the spiral

staircase until theyreached the top of thetower.

Although it was lateNovember, the scenespread below wasbathed in summer sun-shine. Lush green treesand colourful flowerbeds spread around.

In the distance werefamiliar streets andlandmarks but mostwere reduced to ivy-covered ruins. To thenorth of the city cen-

tre were gleaming,glass covered towers.

Wide roads cutthrough the ruins to theshining buildingswhere people massed, contrasting with theemptiness of the old-er surroundings.

“Now we’ll seewhat will be,” said theGuide leading his vis-itor back down thestaircase, then furtherdown over slime-cov-ered steps overlooking

a huge cavernousspace.

Figures writhed andlaboured at varioustasks. A well-knownpolitician wearilypushed an overflowingwheelie bin up a steepslope. He emptied itsstinking contents intoa loathsome pit filledwith people wallowingin rubbish.

Every t ime thepolitician emptied thebin and pushed it down

the slope it would fillup again immediatelyand his toil beganagain.

Among the otherhorrors was a smartly-dressed woman fran-tically beating off twohuge metal birds thatswooped on her againand again.

Before letting Rogerout, the Guide fixedhim with his chillinggaze and said: “Fewpass through the doorbut all keep its se-crets”.

Memories - some-thing we alle n d e a v o u r t omake and cherishwith a fondnesslike no other.Whilst this seemsa normal part oflife, what aboutthe flip side; likelosing your mem-ory?

Imagine losing all ofyour memories, every-thing you know andlove, and even the ba-sic ability to recog-nise those friends andrelatives you love andt r e a s u r e d e a r l y.Unfortunately, that’swhat is now happen-ing more often as a re-sult of Alzheimer’s andDementia.

Not only is this cru-el for the sufferer, butheart breaking andfrustrating for theirl o v e d o n e s .A l z h e i m e r ’s a n dDementia snatches thepeople you love. Theylook the same, theymay even sound thesame, but they aren’tthemselves. This is acruel and degradingdisease and needsmore people to helplead the battle againstit.

MEMORIESby Hannah Frances Davey

Having witnessedthis first hand, I trulyknow and understandthe need for more re-search into a cure forA l z h e i m e r ’s a n dDementia. It has nowbeen a year since myNan, Hannah FrancesDavey, lost her battlewith the disease. I sawher change from a veryproud, well-conductedand warm lady into ashadow of her formerself, gaunt-looking andfrail. We should all re-fuse to accept this as“the norm”. It isn’t.

I am fundraising forAlzheimer’s Society

to raise awareness ofthis disease and helpget vital funds to se-cure my own future, that of my loved onesand everyone else. Ifwe all do this, we’ll allhave a much betterchance to succeed inour mission.

On 12th April 2013,I hosted an alternativeg i g i n a i d o fAlzheimer’s Societyand had local bandsElephantom, Oceanis,RamRaid and MetroManila Aide, with a setfrom Filth Dubstep andeveryone involved hada great night of music

and merriment, as well as the chance to be in-volved in a massive prize giveaway. You canstill help by donating to my Just Giving page;http://www.justgiving.com/Han-Davey-Before-I-Forget

Please help this truly worthy cause. We haveto step up and ensure our own futures aren’tsnatched away by Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Another two defeatsmounts pressure onStoneycroft to get offthe bottom of thetable. The home de-feat by REMYCA bythe odd goal was a re-al sickener, with thegame being settled bya controversial penal-ty for handball.

This was a scrappygame that on balance the‘Croft should have wonbut “should haves” are notgood enough for them

right now.The game against APH

at Cheshire Lines wasdisappointing to say theleast. After an even startin which the ‘Croft lookedcomfortable at the backand posed a threat goingforward and when EddieBaker turned sweetly inthe box and forced a su-perb double save fromthe Aigburth keeper, hopes were raised that aresult was in their grasp.Smart play followed fromthe visitors before a fa-

miliar story unfoldedwhen in the 40th minutean aimless ball evadedboth defenders and at-tackers alike to bouncehigh and float into the netto put the home side inf r o n t a n d f o r t h eStoneycroft heads to drop.

Despite sterling per-formances from LiamCurrie and debutant MikeGough at the centre of de-fence, Croft’s inability tokeep possession provedcostly and APH coastedto victory adding four to

their first half score. AdamBaker, coming on as sub-stitute, got one back forStoneycroft with a well hitshot but it was to proveno more than a consola-tion.

I t m e a n s t h eStoneycroft players haveto pick themselves up andstrive to salvage some-thing from what is fast be-coming an easily forget-table season and the nextthree fixtures will provevital if they are to rescueany crumbs of comfort.

The f irst teamrecorded their12thstraight victory,with a 2-1 awayvictory in a physi-c a l e n c o u n t e ragainst Aluminiwith top marks-man Antony Wongbagging a brace.Their rejuvenatedform has propelledthem into the semifinals of their divi-sional cup andthird in the league.P r i o r t o t h eAlumini victorythey beat LucasSports the previ-ous week 6-1, withJ o e R e y n o l d samongst the goalsand Tom Mangancoming off thebench to net twice.

The third team com-pleted their fixtureswith a 3-1 defeat toJ a y m c w i t h S t eKeegan netting. Willyand Jimmy’s teamhave finished in a re-

spectable mid table po-sition in their first sea-son with a team show-ing an emphasis onyouth (despite the in-clusion of Hilly).

The veterans regis-tered one of their bestperformances againstl e a g u e l e a d e r sJawbone. Despite go-ing down early to a 2-0 deficit, they cameback to draw 2-2 in agreat team effort withNeil James scoringboth goals. They thenwent on strongly tobeat De La Salle 7-1with Neil Jamesgrabbing a hat trick, and Kevin Addo , MickRussell and MarkCarney chipping inwith goals.

A special mentionmust also go to theladies football teamwho play on a Sundayafternoon. They arenow through to the se-mi final of their cupand best wishes go tothem in winning somesilver ware.
