SHIPPING AND LOGISTICS WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SHIPPING AND LOGISTICS? A location at the centre of the UK, new post-panamax port capacity coming on-line and direct motorway, rail and inland Manchester Ship Canal links, means that there are huge opportunities for shipping and logistics investments in Liverpool. Liverpool is one of the main gateways into the UK. The Port of Liverpool is the UK’s largest west coast container port and has a capacity of c650,000 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) per annum as well as bulk handling capability. A £300m investment in post-panamax facilities is underway and will add c750,000 TEU capacity as well as increasing vessel size. This will add opportunities for shipping lines, logistics and maritime services alike. There is a cost and time advantage for many users to import goods through Liverpool compared to ports in the South East of England and there is a multi-modal choice for onward distribution. Half the UK container market is closer to Liverpool than the south of England and virtually the entire country can be reached in legal driver hours from Liverpool. In addition to the Port, Liverpool can offer air freight opportunities through Liverpool John Lennon Airport with an ability for night flights; facilities for UK distributors; and An expanding international port with a large scale investment in a post-panamax terminal expected to double container capacity to 1.5m TEUs per annum. Liverpool already represents a base for 5 of the 6 largest shipping lines in the world and can provide every shipping, warehousing and commercial support service. With a total population of just over 1.5 million people, and a working population of nearly 1 million, companies locating in the wider City can access a considerable pool of labour. In addition, over 6.2 million people live within an hour’s drive time of the area.

It is estimated that there are 34,000 people already employed in the maritime, airport and related sectors in the city.

There is a university Technical College (uTC) in the City region entirely focused on maritime skills.

The average unemployment level in Liverpool is 5.6%, a little higher than both the North West and uK average. The local unemployment level means that there is a sustainable pool of labour available to new companies locating to the area.

The slightly higher unemployment tends to place less pressure on wage rates, skills and may potentially improve staff retention rates.

The expansion of the Port of Liverpool is being undertaken by the large uK private company Peel Holdings whilst Associated British Ports also have a base on the Mersey.

In addition to the Port of Liverpool expansion, Peel is investing £500m in three inland ports along the Manchester ship canal.

Logistics company Stobart alongside retailer Tesco have identified the opportunities created by a Liverpool location and have developed a multi modal transport hub in Halton (within the City region).

WHAT IS HAPPeNING IN THe WIDer LOCAL eCONOMy?

Outside of the port and logistics sector there are lots of other things going on across the city economy.

The major companies are investing here including Jaguar Land rover – who make the evoque and Freelander Models in the city; Novartis who manufacture vaccines; and Bibby Line who straddle maritime and financial services activities and are one of Liverpool’s oldest major companies.

Other companies with a significant presence in Liverpool and the wider region include Princes Group, royal and Sun Alliance, Bank of New york, Johnson Controls, unilever and many others.

Investment in the city continues with perhaps the largest current regeneration project outside of the Port sector involving the redevelopment of the royal Liverpool Hospital which once complete will have involved a £424m project, there is also a major bridge project (£600m) creating a second crossing of the Mersey; and the on-going investment in offshore wind and oil and gas in Morecambe Bay.

All in all, there has never been a better time to move business into Liverpool. The Liverpool City region generates £23bn in economic output every year and in the last decade Liverpool was one of the uK’s fastest growing cities recording a 39% increase in output - the city is vibrant, dynamic and alive with opportunity.
