DIYNews● BOSCH has announced its

The tools include a new powerpaint roller (£129.99), availablefrom February, which can be usedwith pretty much any emulsion, notjust special packs, and is really easyto clean – brilliant.

There’s also a new drip-freewall-paint spray gun (£179.99,available from April) and a newcordless screwdriver (£59.99,available from June), with a built-inrotating container for bits, so you’llnever have to waste time searchingfor the right bit again.

Other new additions, launchingthis month, include a cordlesstacker (£59.99) and an improvedcordless glue gun (£69.99).

The Bosch IXO IV cordlessscrewdriver (£39.99), which has30% more power than before, willbe available in May. There’s even aSwarovski crystal-encrustedversion, £299.99, for DIY withadded bling. One for the ladies, Ithink.

Tape in thewarmth

Save money and feel warmer thanksto weatherstripping insulation tape.Weatherstripping is tape that sealsthe gaps between the moving partsof a window or door.

As well as helping to prevent draughts, itacts as a barrier against dust, insects andnoise, and is a lot cheaper and easier to fitthan double or secondary glazing.Weatherstripping comes in different types –look for one with adhesive backing to makefitting it quicker.● Period windows tend to be draughty, soweatherstripping is ideal for them, especially if you can’t have secondary ordouble glazing because of planning

restrictions. To prepare the window frame, remove any loose paint, then touch it up (ifnecessary) and leave to dry. Clean and drythe frame before applying the tape.● Fitting weatherstripping to sashwindows is quite complicated because youneed it along the top and bottom sashes(both sides), the bottom of the bottom sash, the top of the top sash and the outer meetingrail (the point where the top of the bottomsash meets the bottom of the top sash).Follow the manufacturer’s instructions forapplying the weatherstripping, and consult agood DIY book or website for the order inwhich to fit it on sash windows.● If your windows are more modern, theymay have a slot designed forweatherstripping, known as a kerf. Theweatherstripping needed for this has atubular edge on one side and a lip on theother to provide a tight seal.● To replace tubular weatherstripping, start by prising it off from the tubular edge.Ensuring that the surface is clean and dryand that no remnants of the old tape remain, press the new weatherstripping firmly intothe slot and trim to fit exactly.

Prepare your windows anddoors for what the elementswill throw at them this winterby fitting weatherstripping, says Julia Gray

will be unveiled at the end ofJanuary. For moreinformation, visitwww.littlegreene.com

Don’t endup in

THE holiday’s over andwhile it’s common to feelyou’re suffering from alittle too much partying, there’s another often

overlooked symptom – a decorhangover.

Once you’ve disposed of thatsparkling tree and taken downcolourful cards, even the best ofrooms can look dull and bare bycomparison. Winter’s harsh lightcan expose past-their-best colourschemes and furnishings, too.

“Don’t suffer from decordoldrums. Instead, take this asthe perfect time to look at roomsafresh and decide whether theyreally work for you,” says ClareNolan, stylist and interiorsauthor, whose new book, MakingA House Your Home, is packedwith inspiration and clever tipsto help with a New Year revamp.

“Step away from questions ofstyle and think about what it isyou actually do at home. How doyou spend your time?

“Making changes to your homeso it fits your lifestyle can be justas important as choosing thecolour of the walls. So if you lovea hobby, you should be trying tomake a space where you canenjoy it or, if you entertain a lot,the dining area should be afeature.”

To revamp a home, you mayonly need to re-arrangefurniture, which could also openup a new area. By repositioningartwork, mirrors, rugs andlighting, you can create differentfocal points and change theatmosphere.

“Avoid the knee-jerk reaction ofchucking out and buying new,”says Clare.

“When relocating things, startwith anything that isn’t workinghard or earning its keep in itscurrent position, but thinkoutside the box.

“A bed quilt could become achair cover, a tablecloth or even awall hanging. A chair coulddouble as a bedside table, and abench could transform into aconsole table. Get creative!”

RENOVATE AND REVIVEMakeovers don’t have to beconfined to TV programmes andDIY experts. An old piece offurniture can be given a facelifteasily.

“It’s really quite astonishingjust what a difference paint canmake,” Clare says.

“An old-fashioned piece ofbrown furniture that you

wouldn’t look twice at, can beelevated to perfectly chic with acouple of coats of solid colour.”STYLISTTRICKS: You canpaint almostanything you lovethe shape of – thesurface finish andcolour won’tmatter. Simplyapply a specialistprimer to suit it,whether plastic, metal or wood.

“Painting andwallpapering apiece can be trulystylish,” Clare

says. “You can wallpaper drawerfronts, add a coat of varnish toprotect the finish and paint the

frame. Add newhandles and youhave an individual, distinctive featurefor little cost.”

COLOUR MEBEAUTIFUL“Colour has a hugeimpact on the mood

of a home,” says Clare. “It’s apowerful tool and has the abilityto make your heart sing or sink,so repainting a few walls couldbe just the boost your home andwellbeing needs for a new year.”

In a small home, she advisesusing a palette of tonal colours, which are only slightly darker orlighter than each other, to makethe space feel bigger.STYLIST TRICKS: When you’rechoosing the background colourfor a room, usually the wallpaint, consider the amount oflight a room gets.

“If bright light’s the problem, opt for deeper, cooler colourssuch as blues and greens, and

MyFirstHOME

JohnKirby, artistWhere was the family home you grew upin and what was it like?Richland Road, Liverpool 13. A rented, 3 bedsemi-detached, near our church and school, St.Cecilia’s.

What is your clearest memory of thehouse? It was all a bit chaotic. My dear old (and nowdeceased) mother wasn’t the tidiest mosthouse-proud person in the world. There werefour of us besides my parents. We knew almosteveryone in the road and there were very fewparked cars so we played in and around eachother’s houses.

Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost?I bought my first property when I was in my40s, a run-down little house in the West ofIreland for £25,000 in 1992. Previously I’d beenlucky to have a Housing Association flat inBattersea, South London.

What made you want to buy it?My ancestors came from Ireland and I wantedto try living in a rural and remote place. As itturned out I got to know my neighbours betterthere than I ever have in London.

What are the most important featuresyou look for when buying a house? We all know that feeling of belonging when wesettle on a place. It fits us.

Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it tothe experts? When I moved into my flat 11 years ago I had along list of “Things to do” from the surveyor’sreport. It was only when my partner, Alun, moved in last year that we got round to makingthe place more comfortable. There’s still a lotto do and much conflict about how to do it. Ihave accumulated a lot of junk over the years.

What's the one thing you love mostabout your current house? My flat – our flat I should say – is now a properhome, so its most lovable element is thepresence of Alun. Material things aren’t thatimportant in the end.

▼avoid warm colours,” advises Clare.

“If you lack natural light, eitherembrace it and create a den-likespace using moody colours, ormaximise the light by painting withlight neutrals and using reflectivefinishes. By contrast, matt surfacesabsorb light and make colour appeardenser and more intense.”

KILL THE CLUTTERDejunking and decluttering can bepainful, says Clare, but as well asgiving you space, it will also allowyour decorative items to star andearn their place in the home.

“Your mantra should be ‘use it,love it, or lose it’,” she says.

“If you really can’t bear to partwith something and you’ve gotenough storage space, considerhaving winter and summer looks.Just pack things away and bring

them back into use when the seasonchanges.”STYLIST TRICKS: Sacrificing awhole wall to storage may seemexcessive, but once fitted, you’llwonder how you ever managedwithout it, says Clare.

“Don’t overlook the potential oflighting in cupboards. Recessedspotlights in cabinets and striplights under shelves all shed lightjust where you need it,” she says.

“Painting the inside of cupboardshelps too – a bright, zingy shade canturn it into a real feature.”

CLEVER KITCHENKitchens are the hub of a home, butthey can feel overcrowded andunwelcoming unless there’s carefulplanning.

“If you’re going to use the kitchenas a snug, or informal playroom and

TV room as well, furnish it as youwould other rooms,” she advises.

“Bring in decorative elements tosoften its functional kitchen aspects. While lighting needs to be practical, there’s no reason why you can’t havea chandelier or a sculptural floorlamp as well.”STYLIST TRICKS: A calendarpinned to a wall is fine, but achalkboard wall for notes, lists anddates is more effective and can makea focal point.

“Use blackboard paint to paint thearea you want,” says Clare. “Yourchalkboard will look much moreimpressive when it’s wall-to-walland floor-to-ceiling.”

In a small kitchen, replacewall-hung units with rows of openshelves, which will look lessoverpowering than closed cupboardsand ensure everything is easily

visible.“Think outside the box when it

comes to groceries,” she suggests.“Fruit and vegetables makeinstantly gorgeous displays whenstored in cake stands or piled intoclear vases, and even a bunch ofherbs can look as pretty as a bunchof flowers.”

COFFEE TABLE CHICNever overlook the power of thecoffee table, advises Clare, as it’s oneof the most important pieces in aliving room.

“Everything circulates around itand it’s the equivalent of that otheressential – the kitchen table,” shepoints out.

“But don’t think it has to be aneat square or rectangle. It doesn’teven have to be a table – a blanketbox, trunk or even a few wine crates

screwed together will work fine.”STYLIST TRICK: If you have theroom, go for an oversizedupholstered ottoman or largefootstool which can double as extraseating.

“Harden and level out the soft, squishy surfaces of upholsteredcoffee tables with a pile of books oran oversized tray,” she suggests.

“Soften a wooden table with athrow. Fold it so it creates a runnerthat you can lay across the middleand it will have the advantage ofhiding any spills or stains.”

Utilise its decorative potential bygrouping treasured items inclusters, but ensure they’re easilyportable by standing them on a tray.

AS THE ideal gardensambassador for thisyear’s Ideal Home Show,TV gardening expertAlan Titchmarsh needs

to stay ahead of the times.Keeping a keen eye on gardening

trends, landscaping designs andwhat the public will be growing in2012 and beyond, he predicts thatthe “grow your own” campaign willbe as strong as ever this year.

“Growing your own will still bepopular,” he says, “and veg can befitted into pockets on the flowerborder as well as on a dedicated vegpatch.

“Climbers on house walls are setto make a resurgence – who needsto look at boring brickwork? Justmake sure that adequate wire ortrellis supports are provided.

“And repeat-flowering rosesshould be in every garden – in andamong border perennials andshrubs – dedicated rose beds arenow out,” he says.

Despite heavy TV commitments,Alan will be out in his Hampshiregarden this winter, preparing it forspring and beyond.

“Getting my garden ready forspring is something that, likeeverybody else, I try to fit in aroundwork. But it’s vital and my gardenis my safety valve as well as mycanvas.

“My garden has good lines.Perspective, proportion and formare every bit as important to me ascolour. There is lots of evergreentopiary – clipped box and yew – butwithin the borders there arebillowing banks of perennials, shrubs and roses.

“I also have a wild flower meadowand a wildlife pond, providing greatentertainment and a really goodway of doing my bit forconservation. My garden is mysanctuary.”

Winter offers time for planningnew borders and allows gardenerstime to do jobs little by little, hesays.

“The great thing about winter isthat things move slowly in thegarden and we have a chance tocatch up. It’s not all about tidying, though there is some of that to do –border perennials to cut back (I liketo leave some old foliage on inwinter to help insects and birds),the last of the leaves to clear up andcompost.

“I lightly fork over the earth

between plants in early spring, working in a sprinkling of blood, fish and bone and then, amongshrubs in particular, I mulch withchipped bark to seal in moistureand keep down weeds.”

Winter is a great time to take along, hard look at the garden andwork out where there are gaps interms of interest, he reflects.

Deciduous trees and shrubs arebest planted now (provided the soilis not waterlogged or frozen) to givethem a head start in spring, whileperennials should be ordered now

for planting in early spring so thatthe year can get off to a flying start.

If the ground’s too hard or wet towork on, curl up on a winter’sevening with some seed cataloguesand work out what you want togrow this year, making your orderquickly for the best selection, hesuggests.

If you’re creating a new veg plot, decide what you like eating andhow much space such crops willtake up.

Then take time to work outsowing and harvesting times so that

the best use is made of your vegpatch.

“Order your seeds early and storethem in a shoe box in order ofsowing times,” he advises.

“Don’t sow too much ofquick-maturing crops such aslettuce and radish at the same time, but make smaller sowings every fewweeks to ensure a succession oftender young crops.”

Indoors in January and February, you can sow geranium(pelargonium) seeds early – theytake a long while to grow and will

Mahonia will grow happily inshade, providing not only scentbut good architectural value andsome of the upright varieties, such as M. x media “Charity”,which bears vivid yellow flowerspikes in winter, make goodbarriers against intruders.

BUYERS are most concernedabout the safety of theneighbourhood and whether theirclose neighbours are noisy yetneither of these factors is reallycovered by official documents, anew survey says.

According to the survey fromconveyancer 1st PropertyLawyers, more than nine in 10buyers (93%) would likeinformation which is notnormally revealed by an estateagent, property survey orproperty searches before they signon the dotted line.

The survey of 1,220 homeownersfound the number one concernwas a safe neighbourhood, with87% keen to learn about the safetyof the area before they move.

In second place, 82% of peoplewanted to know whether theywould have noisy neighbours,

while 81% wanted to hear aboutdifficulties with the plumbing andelectrics of their new home.

All these factors could make orbreak a sale and might causeconsiderable stress if buyers onlyfind out about them after movingin, yet estate agents rarely revealthis information during viewings.

Problems relating toenvironmental concerns, such asnoise and air pollution, and trafficand parking, also ranked highly.

Buyers were least interested inissues of appearance and tidiness, such as nearby homes putting upgarish Christmas lights (13%),frequent mess from foxes oranimals (32%) and unkemptproperties (46%).

Mark Montgomery, commercialdirector at 1st Property Lawyers, says: “Buying a house is one of thebiggest and most expensive

decisions that people ever have tomake and they want as muchinformation as possible to makethat choice.

“But our research found thatmuch of the information whichbuyers really value may not bereadily available because it rarelyvolunteered by agents.

“The buyer may discover badnews too late, causingunnecessary stress.

“We think agents should bemore proactive in providing moredetailed information to buyers oninitial viewings.

“They could help further bysuggesting a buyer visits theproperty at different times of theday, as well as at weekends, to helpgauge the levels of noise, trafficand any other activity in thelocality which they can expectwere they to move in.” HOUSE HUNT: But is your dream home in a nightmare location?
