BREAKING CONVENTIONSLiverpool is unconventional, revolutionary, transformational and sensational. And not just in our spaces and events but through our downtime offering too.

We relish our unconventional spaces, as well as our Three Graces and have all the places you need, from the former Rum Warehouse to the Crypt, Camp and Furnace to Liverpool Cathedral right through to the state of the art ACC Liverpool.

2015 saw Liverpool open its doors to the highly anticipated Exhibition Centre Liverpool a brand new, state-of-the-art, purpose-built exhibition centre - part of the ACC and already welcoming hugely successful exhibitions.

We like to be different - we don’t just offer gala dinners as standard, we offer ‘Dine around the Dock’ experiences to drinks receptions on the 'Ferry 'Cross the Mersey' taking in our beautiful UNESCO listed waterfront. From the smallest meeting places to festival location spaces we make it happen.

This year will be no different as Liverpool once again will host the International Festival for Business. Supported by central government the

unique event will see over 30,000 delegates expected across 70 events held in our city during a three week programme.

We take our sustainability seriously. We have a number of national and internationally accredited venues, our carbon emissions per person are lower than the national average and we have more than 8,000 people employed in the energy and environmental technology sector. It’s fitting then that the city offers some of the greenest conference venues in Europe including ACC Liverpool, Hope Street Hotel, Sefton Park Palm House and St George’s Hall.

But it’s not just about the spaces, it’s our downtime places too. Delegates can immerse themselves in our culture, heritage, and leisure offering including Tate Liverpool, Museum of Liverpool, Everyman & Playhouse Theatres, Liverpool Football Club, Everton Football club as well as countless beautiful parks, stunning restaurants, a world-renown waterfront and even a visit to the beach just 10 minutes away – Liverpool really is the world-class conference destination your delegates won’t stop talking about.

was the key to the perfect partnership between event organiser and convention bureau. The enthusiasm the team have for the City, ability to work with our partners such as our PCO and venue (ACC) and early support were an important part of the decision to bring Intergalva to Liverpool.MURRAY COOK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EUROPEAN GENERAL GALVANIZERS ASSOCIATION

LCB provided an accommodation service for delegates at the Hospice UK annual conference in 2015. We were delighted with the expertise and knowledge of the friendly team, not just in sourcing a wide range of accommodation for all budgets, but also with the helpful suggestions of venues for our conference dinner.RUTH REID, COURSES AND CONFERENCES MANAGER,HOSPICE UK

The Liverpool Convention Bureau were one of the most efficient bureaus I've ever dealt with. They strenuously worked hard to ensure our first event in Liverpool in 2015 ran without a hitch and were well placed to get me the best rates for accommodation for my group due to their excellent relationship with the hotels in the area. I threw a few curveballs at them and they were only too willing to help; nothing was too much trouble! They have fantastic local knowledge and it was a real pleasure to work with Kate, Sarah and the team. I look forward to throwing a few more challenges their way in 2017!SARAH GREENWOOD, EVENTS MANAGER, BRITISH CONTACT LENS ASSOCIATION

Liverpool Convention Bureau played a huge part in making our conference a success. The team made planning our conference so much easier by utilising their local knowledge and bureau services such as accommodation booking, finding venues for social events, and organising walking tours, allowing us more time to develop our conference programme itself and promote attendance. LIVERPOOL WATERFRONTA UNESCO World Heritage SiteCunard’s Three Queens may have got all the headlines when they met in an historic event on the Mersey, but they’re not the only ships that have been getting attention on the river recently.

The Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey has been famous since Gerry and the Pacemakers immortalised it in the heyday of Merseybeat. Sir Peter Blake – the artist behind the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band - was commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool to ‘dazzle’ one of the ferries, Snowdrop. The result is a magnificent psychedelic design that can be seen crossing the river right through the day on the River Explorer cruise, and is a must-do when visiting the city.

The ticket also includes entry to the U-Boat Story attraction at Woodside ferry terminal.

If your appetite for The Beatles has been whet on the ferry, call in to The Beatles Story site at the ferry terminal. This is one of two sites (the other is just along the water at Albert Dock), and your ticket covers entrance to both for a 48-hour period. The Beatles Story is an interactive museum which charts the story of the four lads who changed the world, from the first days through their Hamburg adventures and Beatlemania to the later solo careers. It’s fantastically detailed and accessible for all ages.

The waterfront is also home to some of the city’s enviable collection of national museums. The newest major addition to the Liverpool skyline are the distinctive white lines of the Museum of Liverpool, which was built in 2011 to sit alongside the Three Graces. Inside, the museum explores how the port, its people, their cultural and sporting

significance have shaped the city’s story. You can climb aboard a full-size replica of an old Overhead Railway carriage, sing a city hit on the karaoke or experience life in an 1870 Liverpool house.

Another popular venue is Merseyside Maritime Museum and International Slavery Museum, a former warehouse which has four floors of exhibits looking at the influence the water has had on Liverpool over the last three centuries. And like all of the city’s national museums, they are completely free.

Tate Liverpool has a permanent collection boasting artwork from names such as Picasso, Matisse and Cezanne. It has also built a reputation for outstanding exhibitions, with its recent Chagall, Pollock and Warhol shows winning widespread critical acclaim, Tate Liverpool stages a Francis Bacon show in the summer. With a constantly changing events programme as well, a visit is strongly recommended.

As well as its cultural attractions, there are restaurants and bars to suit every taste, as well as stunning hotels which have seamlessly integrated into the waterfront such as Malmaison, Jurys Inn and Titanic Hotel. All of which makes it a destination in itself, before you even venture inland!

Liverpool is a truly cultural city, bustling with impressive architecture, galleries, museums, concerts, performances and festivals for your delegates to enjoy. Liverpool Convention Bureau can provide advice and offers to help your delegates make the most of their ‘downtime’ and experience the city’s cultural attractions. For regularly updated details and listings see www.visitliverpool.com/downtime.One of the absolute best ways to see the city is aboard the famous Mersey Ferry on the River Explorer Cruise. Sir Peter Blake – of Sgt. Pepper album cover fame, has ‘dazzled’ one of the ferries, Snowdrop, with a brilliantly bright paint-job following a commission by Tate Liverpool, Liverpool Biennial and 14-18 Now.

A little further up the coast, on Crosby Beach, is Antony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’ where you can watch 100 life-sized, weather-worn, iron statues disappear and re-emerge as the tide changes. The city centre is also peppered with public art and sculpture, including the curious Superlambanana.

Visual arts lovers should also head for Tate Liverpool, home to the North’s contemporary art permanent collection, which boasts artwork from world-famous names such as Picasso, Matisse and Cezanne. Its temporary exhibitions are also critically acclaimed, with recent highlights including Chagall, Pollock and Warhol. The current exhibition is Works to Know by Heart: An Imagined Museum which runs until May 2016, followed by a Francis Bacon show in the summer. With a constantly changing events programme, and a popular café and shop, a visit is strongly recommended.

Close to Tate Liverpool is the Open Eye Gallery which offers thought-provoking photography exhibitions, whilst FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) in the city centre is an über-cool multi-media space with art exhibitions, workshops, cinema (screenings in The Box are recommended for the more intimate feel and comfy sofas), relaxed bar and cafe.

Bluecoat is the oldest building in the city centre and boasts contemporary art exhibitions, artists’ ateliers, a rich heritage and even a secret garden, perfect for escaping with a refreshing cuppa. 2017 will see the institution celebrate its 300th year, and there is already an extensive cultural programme taking place in the build up to this important milestone.

Liverpool was recently recognised by UNESCO as a City of Music, so why not explore our musical heritage by attending a performance by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the beautifully refurbished Philharmonic Hall, a stunning art deco building, or catch a more intimate concert at the brand new Music Room, which regularly features folk, jazz, and blues artists.

Liverpool’s theatres and concert halls offer performances most nights so there’s something for everyone. The Empire Theatre attracts large, touring West End productions as well as dance performances and operas, whilst the Royal Court immerses you in locally-written productions and very Liverpudlian humour!

The RIBA-award winning Everyman Theatre, and its sister venue the Liverpool Playhouse, produce their own brand new plays as well as hosting well known

touring companies, often with an adventurous, edgy or sometimes irreverent feel. Many of the UK’s most famous actors began their careers at the Everyman, which has always been a truly inclusive organisation, welcoming visitors and local alike. For those seeking alternative theatre and comedy, the Unity, Epstein and Lantern Theatres are ideal.

Gaze up from pretty much anywhere in Liverpool and you will see the red sandstone Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Be inspired by its awesome scale and enjoy the Cathedral’s highlights such as the beautiful Lady Chapel, the incredible view from the top of the tower, the quirky ‘whispering arches’, and the neon art installation by Tracey Emin (yes, really). The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King’s circular architecture features a central altar, and a vast coloured glass lantern above. The Cathedral’s stunning Crypt is an impressive space and gives an idea of the original, but uncompleted, design by Edwin Lutyens.

The grand, neo-classical St George’s Hall, opposite Lime Street Station, is Liverpool’s original multi-purpose civic building, complete with law courts, prison holding cells, concert

hall (a favourite of Charles Dickens), terrace, and stunning Minton-tiled Great Hall. Self-guided tours begin at the Heritage Entrance.

Liverpool hosts a huge range of city-wide events and it is clear to see that our city loves its dancing, parades, music, street art, theatre, culture and comedy. Festivals take place throughout the year and many are free to attend, such as: Liverpool International Music Festival (22-24 July 16); Africa Oyé (18–19 June 16), Europe’s largest free festival showcasing the best in African and Caribbean music and culture; and Liverpool Biennial (9 Jul to 16 Oct 16), the UK’s Festival of Contemporary Art which showcases newly commissioned art from around the world.

Liverpool is a city unlike any other, and there are some experiences that just can’t be found anywhere else. Make your event stand out with something delegates won’t have seen before. The staff at Liverpool Convention Bureau can help with outside-the-box thinking.

FERRY ‘CROSS THE MERSEYLiverpool boasts a truly iconic, UNESCO World Heritage Waterfront and skyline, and what better way to experience it than aboard a Mersey Ferry? You can even hold receptions on board as you cruise up and down the river to the strains of Gerry and the Pacemakers’ famous song. For best effect, hold a drinks party at sundown.

FORE-MOST FOR GOLFThe Liverpool City Region is home to England’s Golf Coast - 12 of the finest golf courses in Britain, including two Open Championship venues, Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool at Hoylake –the venue for the Claret Jug returning in 2017.

Playing a round is perfect for incentives or downtime between conference appointments, and can be arranged through www.englandsgolfcoast.com.

STATELY GLAMOURIndulge your inner lord or lady of the manor at the magnificent mansion Knowsley Hall. Enjoy croquet on the lawns and elegant afternoon tea. For something a bit more energetic, Knowsley also offers acres of outdoor space for team-building activities such as archery, quad biking or paintballing, plus, personal tours of Knowsley Safari Park. A great option for incentive trips.

MAJESTIC SPACES“If you want a cathedral, we’ve got one to spare…” so goes the Liverpool folk song. Liverpool Cathedral (Anglican), the largest in Britain, is truly magnificent in scale and architecture, whilst the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (Catholic) has vast swathes of coloured glass which produce wonderful light inside the building. Both are inspirational venues for gala dinners and receptions.

CITY OF MUSICMusic is integral to the city’s DNA, with more UK number one records than any other city. It’s no wonder then that we are a UNESCO City of Music too. Explore our musical heritage by hosting a 60s party in the Beatles Story, hiring the world-famous Cavern Club, or hearing the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at their beautiful art deco home, the Philharmonic Hall.

GOOD SPORTSSport is a very serious matter in Liverpool, and is one of the factors that has made it world famous. With two Premier League football clubs in Liverpool and Everton, it is the most decorated footballing city in England. With the world’s most famous steeplechase at Aintree and rugby league giants St Helens – as well as those championship golf courses - the City Region offers something for all sports fans.

DINING OUTLiverpool is home to a wealth of restaurants and bars with cuisines and tipples around the globe. Whether it’s the elegance of fine dining, a traditional afternoon tea, the spices of the Middle East and Asia, all the meat you can eat steakhouses, the flavours of the Caribbean or trying out our traditional ‘scouse’ with crusty bread Liverpool will not disappoint you. Look out for our locally sourced produce, with many venues serving Knowsley lamb, Wirral asparagus or regionally-brewed beer.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIESLiverpool has the largest collection of museums in the country outside London. National Museums Liverpool runs seven venues, including the new Museum of Liverpool, housed in a landmark waterfront building. Visual art lovers are well catered for, with Tate Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery, FACT, Open Eye Gallery and the Bluecoat offering impressive collections and thought-provoking exhibitions, as well as the Liverpool Biennial which showcases newly commissioned contemporary art from around the world. (More info on our culture on P14-15)

SHOWTIMECatch a Beatles band at the famous Cavern Club, listen to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the beautiful art deco Philharmonic Hall, or catch some of the world’s biggest acts at the Echo Arena. The Empire Theatre hosts all the big musicals, whilst the Playhouse and the recently refurbished Everyman produce a wideranging programme of acclaimed and adventurous theatre.

FRESH AIRTake a break from city life in one of the region’s many green spaces - Liverpool has more municipal parks than any city in the UK and even more than Paris! Calderstones, Croxteth, Sefton and Wavertree are just a few of our favourites. A short trip outside the city centre to the Wirral peninsula and Sefton and you’ll find plenty of beautiful countryside, great for walks or bike rides including Formby Pinewoods, Hilbre Island, and the beautiful historic garden village of Port Sunlight.

TITANIC HOTEL LIVERPOOLwww.titanichotelliverpool.com

The Titanic Hotel Liverpool is all about the restoration of one of the city’s most historic and iconic buildings. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it forms part of the Stanley Dock development which has been a catalyst for change in the north of the city.

Having retained the original brick and iron features of the warehouse, and an open plan design, all 153 bedrooms make the best use of the building’s grandeur and vaulted brick ceilings.

Stanley’s Bar & Grill will be a place you want to be, a place you want to meet with friends and colleagues, a place for business and to relax. The guest service comes with a smile and the food offering gives diners a truly theatrical experience with its show kitchen.

Sip coffee or a cocktail at the Rum Bar overlooking the water with floor-to-ceiling windows or, when the sun is shining, enjoy alfresco dining along the colonnades.

Events take place in the adjoining Rum Warehouse with capacities of up to 1,000 delegates. When hosting grand receptions and large conferences, Stanley Dock provides the ideal backdrop for your event.

Downstairs amid the red brick arches and beautiful cool stone floors, more Roman Bath than city spa, lies the warm waters of the spa. Tranquil yet atmospheric, the spa offers an experience rather than a facility, with thermal pool, sauna, steam room, sanarium, experience showers, pedicure stations and five luxury treatment rooms, as well as a fully equipped Technogym®.
