Skills are the key to sustainable growth

Welcome to the autumn 2013 edition of Liverpool Chamber Magazine.

As we emerge from a glorious summer, we find ourselves at a much improved position than when we entered it. All indications suggest that we are experiencing an upsurge of confidence and expectation that points to a sustained period of economic recovery. Clearly we are not there yet, but we must accentuate the positives and, as a business community, build upon the momentum of these recent months.

At our recent Quarterly Economic Survey breakfast, we focused on the skills agenda and the needs of businesses when they recruit staff, particularly young people. We know that there is a need to overcome a work skills shortage in the city and prepare our youngsters to be capable of entering the workplace when they leave school, college or university.

I believe that apprenticeships are the best way of giving our young people work based skills and experience. Twenty per cent of our workforce now comprises apprentices. They’ve brought life, energy and ambition to the Chamber, and we’re delighted with their contribution. A story in our last issue about Gemma Parkinson, our apprentice of the year, and her achievements at Bridge Street Apartments is indicative of the great contribution apprentices with the right attitude, drive and determination can achieve. We’re delighted that Gemma has just been announced as the Regional Apprentice of the Year in the over-25 category.

Staff skills and engagement are very much to the fore in the Chamber at the moment, as we’ve just launched our employer engagement research programme with youbecome® and the University of

Liverpool. It’s a tremendous opportunity to benchmark the success of your people management practices and find out the views of your staff concerning how good they believe their company is to work for. I hope many members take advantage of this great opportunity.

Last issue, I talked about the International Festival for Business. I am delighted that Liverpool Chamber has its own day at the festival that will celebrate “The Power of the Global Network”. We look forward to welcoming Chambers of Commerce from around the world – and their members – to Liverpool for our programme on Monday 7 July 2014. I’m really excited about the Chamber programme and we’ll be sharing details of our programme shortly.

Prior to the International Festival for Business, I am delighted to have the return of our Annual Dinner to look forward to on 5 December after a break last year. We have a fabulous surprise awaiting guests and a quality speaker in Peter Shanks, the outgoing MD & Chairman of Cunard. Tickets are on sale now and I hope you can join us at the Anglican Cathedral for our biggest event of the year.

Finally, I do hope you look out for our monthly video bulletin beginning in late September called WellconnectedTV featuring news from Liverpool Chamber and its members. We’re sure you will find it a great watch and, if you wish to be featured within it, there is a great opportunity to do so.

Join the Chamber; use the Chamber; support the Chamber.

Chamber COO Steps Up and Stands OutJenny Stewart, Chief Operating Officer at Liverpool Chamber, has praised the work of Cath Daley and her new programme.

Step Up and Stand Out, designed and delivered by Cath Daley Ltd, aims to develop the communication and engagement skills of female leaders, allowing them to make more if an impact when delivering presentations.

Amongst the beneficiaries is Jenny who, despite having a wealth of experience beforehand, found Cath’s programme to be a real eye-opener.

The Chamber COO commented: “It is much more rounded than just a presentation skills course, and I have grown both personally and professionally. I am now 100% confident in coming across as me rather than trying to be someone else. I find that I use the techniques all day, every day.”

The programme will be held at the Novotel on 17 September, 24 September, 8 October, 31 October, 7 November and 14 November 2013.

Chamber launches employee satisfaction project

Liverpool Chamber is involved in a new research project in conjunction with youbecome®, member organisations and the University of Liverpool.

It focuses on how businesses are meeting the challenges presented by a difficult economic environment; how well they are motivating and maintaining employee morale; and what they can do to improve this.

The youbecome® Engagement Survey measures leadership; products and processes;

training; line managers; morale and confidence; and annual performance reviews.

The project is designed to identify what employees are saying, where key areas for improvement are, and which good practice should be celebrated and replicated elsewhere in the organisation.

Through the research project, Chamber members can benchmark their people management success against their peers, locally and nationally.

Big changes afoot in employment law

July is certainly a big month in the world of employment law. Not only will the Employment Tribunals be welcoming in the

introduction of fees, we will have a new set of rules to follow as well.

The new Employment Tribunals Rules of Procedure will come into force on 29 July 2013. Resulting from Mr Justice Underhill’s review of the current Tribunal rules in 2012, the new rules are intended to be easier to understand, particularly for those parties making or defending a claim without legal representation. There is also an increased focus on effective case management.

Substantial changes include the introduction of a ‘sift stage’, whereby an Employment Judge will review the claim form and the response at the start of the process to determine whether the claim has any merit, and the replacement of Pre-Hearing Reviews and Case Management Discussions with ‘Preliminary Hearings’, with the aim of dealing with all preliminary and case management issues at one hearing.

Simultaneously, from 29 July 2013 claimants will be required to pay fees to bring claims in the Employment Tribunals. Starting at £160 to issue a straightforward claim (such as claims for unauthorised deductions from wages), the fees rise to £250 in more complex matters (such as claims for unfair dismissal or discrimination). If the matter proceeds to a hearing, then fees of either £230 for simple cases or £950 for more complex cases are payable prior to the hearing, bringing the total costs to £390 in simple cases or £1200 in complex ones. This is likely to have a profound effect on the number of people who can afford to bring Employment Tribunal claims.

The Liverpool office of Arup has donated Wildflower Seeded Paper to Autism Initiatives’ new Kaleidoscope Resource Centre, ensuring that their gardens will be blooming.

Kaleidoscope is the charity’s first Community Resource Centre in Liverpool to open which supports those with autism, as well as their families and their carers. The Centre, which opened in Kensington just before Christmas 2012, sees the garden as an important focus for the charity, as it provides a therapeutic environment for visitors.

Hilary Hutt, Kaleidoscope Centre Manager, commented: “Since moving in, we’ve been working really hard getting the Centre just right and it’s really coming together now. We’re all really keen now to get on with the gardens but, of course, funding is always a big problem, so we are doubly delighted to be given this Wildflower Seed Paper by Arup. They will certainly bring a lovely splash of colour and start the gardens off beautifully.”

The seed paper was originally used as stationary at the sustainability focused event

“Water for Life”, held by Arup. This paper will now be planted by Kaleidoscope to grow an area of meadow in their gardens, while also helping to reduce waste produced by the event.

Paul Grover, associate director at Arup, added: “Despite being a global firm, Arup is committed to making a difference locally. The

Kaleidoscope Centre does fantastic work in the local community to support an individual’s needs with autism, and we’re happy to play a small part in supporting this great cause.”

Copplestones thrives with a little help from Friends

Most fans of Friends will remember the episode where Monica fights over her wedding dress in a bridal sale. But to father and son Malcolm and John Sibson, it was the inspiration for them to introduce a new bridal retail concept which is going from strength to strength, named Copplestones Bridal.

Malcolm felt there was a potential for a business which turned the traditional sales model on its head, so he and John sourced a large stock of wedding dresses. Simply displayed on racks as ready to wear and through simple advertising and a website presence, they invited brides to visit their warehouse in Liverpool to view, try on and buy. It was an

immediate success.Copplestones recently moved

into larger premises, close to the MetQuarter. The business now has the feel of a smart wedding store, and provides over 500 wedding dresses in all sizes up to 32. Since the move, sales have doubled.

John intends to open stores in other areas of the UK: “We are looking to set up in London and Birmingham first, as these are easy for us to manage, but ultimately we would like a presence in Glasgow, the Northeast, the Southwest and Wales.”

For now, though, Copplestones is continuing to grow in Merseyside, evidenced by its selection as a Liverpool candidate in the Local Business Accelerator (LBA) campaign.

Commenting on the nomination, Malcolm said: “I am really pleased and excited about the possibilities. I think we have a great future.”

The Anfield Sports Community Centre (ASCC) has won an award for its contributions to national inner-city cricket programme.

The Centre won the Special Recognition Award at the StreetChance Annual Achievement Awards (supported by Barclays Space for Sports), held at Lord’s just one week before the start of the Ashes.

StreetChance was launched at The Centre last October with the help of former footballers Didi Hamann and Nick Barmby and, since then, ASCC employees Marie Rooney and Michelle Taylor have worked tirelessly to make the project a success in the community.

By incorporating StreetChance into school holiday activities and letting kids play a quick game of football before starting the session, Marie and Michelle have transformed cricket into one of the most popular sports at the Centre.

Michelle Taylor, Community Sports Inclusion Officer at the Centre, said: “We were thrilled to be presented with the StreetChance Special Recognition Award. It’s a fantastic project which has allowed us to introduce a new sport to young people in the community.

“We’re really looking forward to the next year of delivering StreetChance.”

Wasim Khan MBE, Chief Executive of the Cricket Foundation, added: “The Centre has gone out of their way to help StreetChance flourish in Anfield. Without their support, the project would have struggled, and it’s thanks to them that their community now boasts a large group of cricket-mad young people in the form of the ‘Merseyside Magic’ team.”

JMP: Forward Thinking Transport Solutions

JMP Consultants Ltd (JMP) were recently successful in obtaining a grant to purchase a pool bike through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF). JMP is one of several local businesses to benefit from Liverpool Chamber’s support to encourage cycling by staff. Through the Business Travel Support Grant, the LSTF provides improvement grants to support more sustainable transport infrastructure for small and medium size companies based in Liverpool.

Recognising that making small changes to travel patterns can reduce carbon emissions and travel costs, they applied for a grant to buy a pool bike for the Liverpool office. As a market leader in sustainable transport and travel behaviour change, as well as an Investor in People employer, they aim to ensure that they have a robust travel plan strategy for the company, which helps to minimise the environmental impact of both commuter and business travel

and, at the same time, encourages a more active approach to business travel.

JMP is thrilled to have the support and assistance of Liverpool Chamber in delivering and practising the sustainable message.

Helen Cumiskey, Principal Transport Planner at JMP, said: “The purchase of the pool bike is highly supportive of our travel plan strategy and will assist our staff in making sustainable, cost effective and efficient business trips. It gives us a further push to practice what we preach!”

Loyal customers and friends of the restaurant had the pleasure of enjoying an evening of Spanish wines and gorgeous tapas whilst relaxing in the new bar area.

It was a fantastic evening, and customers were treated to a Cava reception and samples of the menu, including paella, which was cooked outside for the passing public to enjoy.

To finish off the night, customers enjoyed a flamenco dance by Ramon Arevalo-Garcia, which topped off a truly authentic Spanish feel to the evening in Liverpool.

Hampson expansion defies market fears Hampson Hughes Solicitors are bucking the trend of job creation being threatened by personal injury law changes by appointing 19 new members of staff.

This means that so far this year, Hampson have created 140 new jobs, and 250 new jobs since the company was founded in 2009.

According to Paul Hampson, joint managing director of the organisation, the growth is down to Hampson possessing a different business model to that of a traditional law firm: “This company was established and is used to trading in a tough economic climate, so as many firms are battening down the hatches, we’re continuing to invest to increase our market share.”

This recent recruitment drive forms part of wider plans which Hampson has to expand into new markets over the coming months.

John Hughes, joint managing director for the company, commented: “By investing in the best people, we aim to shake up the legal services sector and establish Hampson Hughes Solicitors as one of the UK’s leading law firms.”

MP joins Wilcocks & Associates as Strategic Advisor

James Duddridge MP has been appointed as a Strategic Advisor to Wilcocks & Associates.

Mr. Duddridge is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East, and was last year Lord Commissioner of the Treasury and Government Whip. In his new role at Wilcocks, he will work with the Shareholding Directors to support the company’s growth and strategic objectives.

James joins other key staff, including Martin Wilcocks, Managing Director, and Robert

Wilcocks, Director.Commenting on his

appointment, Mr. Duddridge said: “I first met Martin when we both worked at Barclays over ten years ago. It is great to be working with him and his team, and I look forward to helping W&A reach out to business owners who are 40+, with 5-20 staff, and are looking to plan the next stage of their business and indeed the rest of their life.”

The addition of James to the team is a coup for Wilcocks, who have grown significantly in the eight years since the formation of the company by Martin.

In 2009, the company secured a long-term lease on its office facilities, in The Plaza on Old Hall Street, and now has over £5m in funds under management with responsibility for a further £30m in commercial property assets.

Optimum Group impressed with the Chamber

Optimum Group hailed the quality of Liverpool Chamber facilities after recently holding a meeting at the Chamber.

The purpose of the meeting was for Optimum to discuss its vision and future plans for the company with 17 store managers. Optimum has 17 Costa stores across the North West, six of which are based in Liverpool.

The company are currently changing from an owner-managed business to a structured, MD-led organisation, and in line with the expected expansion,

Optimum hope to have 30 stores by 2020.

The aforementioned meeting outlined much of this information, and Mark Bryan, managing director at Optimum, was impressed with the Chamber on the day.

Mr. Bryan said: “I was impressed by the professionalism that the facility offers.

“The room really helped present a first class impression and environment for our teams.”

In regards to the future of Optimum, Mark added: “I feel so positive that the time investment will reap dividends within our teams. I’m confident that the messages will go back to our stores more than ever before.”

Interest Rate Swaps

The issue of Interest Rate Swaps (IRS) has been something of a hot topic recently with the recent news that two British Banks had been ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation to customers who claimed that they had been mis-sold the products.

Thousands of individuals, small and medium sized enterprises (SME) and larger companies were sold complex financial derivative products known as Interest Rate Swap Agreements mainly between 2005 and 2009.

It has been revealed that a number of British high street banks have been selling IRSs to thousands of SMEs, despite the IRS being financially inappropriate for most of these businesses. IRSs have proven to be too complex for many businesses and financially dangerous, to the extent that some companies have been forced into administration due to the financial demands that the IRSs placed upon them.

It is imperative that individuals as well as small businesses review their financial products, loans and investments and consider whether they have been properly advised and what, if any, action can be taken. You cannot necessarily rely on your bank to assist you.

If you or your business has been affected by mis-sold IRS please contact a member of the Dispute Resolution team at Gregory Abrams Davidson on 0151 236 5000 or via our website www.gadllp.co.uk.

INTERVIEWS

You’ve come across the Pennines to take the position of Merseytravel CEO. What attracted you to this role?

Merseytravel is a unique travel authority in that it has responsibility for buses, trains, tunnels and ferries. This makes it a great opportunity and a perfect time to come to Merseyside.

How big a challenge is this role for you?

I’ve done a similar job in South Yorkshire, so with the exception of the ferries and the tunnels, I am used to the subject matter. The key challenges are getting to grips with a new area, a new organisation and new people.

What are the key strengths of Merseytravel that you’ve identified?

Our people want to do a brilliant job; there’s clearly a lot of skill and enthusiasm to deliver really good transport solutions for Liverpool City Region. Organisations like the Local Enterprise Partnership, Liverpool Chamber, the local authorities and the bus and train operators really do want to work together.

Are you a hands-on or a more strategic Chief Executive?

I’m both. I made a commitment to go out and try to meet as many of the staff in the first month as I possibly could. I have been to all the bus stations, the train network, tunnels and ferries. I’m a people person, so it suits me.

I’ve also spent a lot of time going out and meeting stakeholders. We are partly funded by the District Councils, so I have been out to ensure I am aware of what their strategic priorities are, and I go out and obtain the views of business.

What have you identified as the critical short-term and long-term goals that you want Merseytravel to achieve while you are CEO?

We have now restructured the majority of the organisation. We want to make sure that we are efficient and offer value for money, so every decision that we make will be transparent within a framework. Delivering this is a critical short term goal.

Our longer term goals consist of delivering

the local transport priorities; making sure we are addressing any business gaps in transport and putting in place the necessary resources to do that. In essence, what we want to do is build on what is a very good transport system, make sure that it continues to improve, and to support and develop the City Region’s economic plans.

Liverpool Chamber is leading a campaign for Liverpool to apply for European Green Capital status. How do you see transport contributing to Liverpool’s green city goals?

Walking and cycling is better for air quality and much healthier. Encouraging more people to walk and cycle is something we want to do.

We will be encouraging transport operators to use new technology such as hybrid vehicles and low emissions vehicles, whilst delivering the likes of electric cars and charging points. In fact, we’ve just found out that we’ve been successful in the bid we led for a share of £5m from DFT’s Clean Bus Technology Fund. This will be used to retro-fit technology to reduce emissions on 59 vehicles on certain routes across the City Region.

Under current Government proposals, businesses are concerned that Liverpool may be the only major northern city not served by an end-to-end, captive High Speed Rail network. What more needs to be done during the Phase II consultation period to secure a competitive level of connectivity

David Brown was recently appointed as Chief Executive of Merseytravel. We caught up with him about his first hundred days in the job.

for Liverpool City Region? The real test for us will be getting one

consolidated Liverpool City Region position that is supported by all the local authorities and the business sector.

That will enable us to have one voice in Government about what we want from HS2, and in negotiating other things that are important to the region, such as better access to the port freight movement; enhancements to the local services; and faster journey times and more trains to and from Liverpool.

For me, there is an opportunity for a new way of working in getting a City Region view, supported and lobbied for by both public sector and Councils, and the business community.

Liverpool Chamber is working closely with partners, including Merseytravel, to support employers under the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF). What are the benefits for business, particularly small companies, in promoting more sustainable travel to their employees?

The LSTF gives the support to get the right people to the right places for the right jobs, and use sustainable modes of travel. It’s healthier for them, and it’s cost-effective; people aren’t spending their wages on

expensive car parking or petrol, they can access work and stay in work, and be a productive employee. The LSTF is a really good example of how we’ve worked with businesses and the Chamber to understand what the issue is, and use Government funding to put in place a solution.

We understand that Merseytravel is attempting to integrate Corporate Social Responsibility within its culture. How important do you think it is for your organisation to be seen as a good corporate citizen?

It’s absolutely essential. We are partly funded by the local taxpayers, and they deserve to know that we are putting in place the proper Corporate Social Responsibility. We employ over 800 people in Liverpool City Region; it is without question that this

philosophy is in the fabric of our organisation.

If we could consider where you would like Merseytravel to be in the coming years, what would constitute a good job for you?

In the short term, it’s making sure that the organisation is offering value for money, that everyone understands the decisions we’re making and why we’re making them, and that we’re offering absolutely excellent professional advice to our stakeholders.

In the medium term, it’s that we are the ‘go-to’ place for transport advice and problem-solving, and that we’re seen as an organisation that really understands what people want and what stakeholders want, and that we actually deliver it.

Long-term, it’s that people of Liverpool City Region can travel on a better, world-class integrated transport system.

The BIg Interview with Butterworth Spengler

Butterworth Spengler have provided insurance for almost 90 years. In that time, the working world has changed dramatically, yet the company has remained a leading insurance provider in Liverpool, and a recent premises move make for a bright future for Butterworth. Liverpool Chamber Magazine recently spoke to Gary Spengler, Chairman of Butterworth Spengler, to learn more about the organisation.

Gary SpenglerChairmanButterworth Spengler

Gary Spengler at the new Butterworth offices.

What services do Butterworth Spengler provide?

We help businesses with their insurance risk

requirements involving property, professional indemnity, liability, fleet and many other policies. We focus on reducing

price, giving appropriate cover and piece of mind and, above all, a face-to-face service for our customers. We act for over 3,000 businesses, and these range from corner shops to PLC’s; these are mostly based in the North West, but we have clients as far as Russia and New Zealand.

Could you tell us how the company was founded back in 1924?

My grandfather worked in an insurance broker’s office prior to the War, and when he returned from the War, he went back to this firm. Having gained the appropriate experience, he set up his own business.

Unlike my predecessors, I came straight into the business with no prior experience, and have grown the business, particularly over the last five years; we have expanded to over 40 staff, and have just moved two offices into one large office space in Wavertree Technology Park.

I and my fellow Directors see this as a

distinct advantage, bringing together business support roles such as claims, accounts and management all under one roof with client-facing staff, so communication and decision-making are improved. It also gives us a platform to expand without needing any more office space.

What makes Butterworth Spengler unique from its competitors?

We are one of the very few independent brokers of our size remaining in the country. Most have sold out, as one generation retires to a “consolidator” who is usually funded by Insurers, or Venture Capitalists whose independence and advice could be questioned. We always put clients’ needs first, not our own.

We employ very senior people, and keep them in client-facing roles rather than management, so our client advice is usually more experienced and knowledgeable than our competitors.

Butterworth Spengler also offer a number of specialist insurance schemes, with a particular emphasis on cycling. Why did Butterworth choose to focus on this method of transport?

We are specialised in many areas, in particular professional indemnity and cycling, to the extent that we are sector leaders. We therefore decided to form in-house divisions with separate specialist staff. Our expertise in cycling has come from over 25 years of involvement with the likes of the Cycling Touring Club and other large cycling bodies. We realised years ago that there was a gap in the insurance market.

We have an international reputation for cycle insurance, which is unusual to most people, and we don’t advertise. We insure the Boris Bike Pedal Cycle Scheme in London, plus many other city schemes. We also cover cycle clubs, cycle shops, cycle mechanics etc. We have partnered with other brokers in Ireland and Spain to use our

knowledge in these countries. We also sponsor the CTC Women’s cycle team, and I myself recently took part in two stages of the Tour de France for fun! The first being the Etape, which is a chosen stage by the French Cycling authority, and over 13,500 cyclists participated in this event, which involves a ride of over 150 km and climbing in excess of 3,500 metres in extreme heat. The second challenge was more interesting: for those that are interested in cycling, I did the iconic Mont Ventoux challenge for the charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, which involved cycling over 270 km (about 170 miles), with a 22 km climb at the end, which was about 3,000 metres. Out of a team of 36 cyclists, only 24 completed the gruelling challenge.

L-R: Peter Spengler, Gary Spengler and Michael Spengler.

We always try to improve and strengthen every area. A good claims experience is all about preparation and planning.

Butterworth moved to Wavertree Technology Park earlier this year.

What are some of the proudest achievements attained by Butterworth Spengler during the course of its 89 year history?

Staying in business and surviving two World Wars is my instinctive answer! Bringing my sons Peter and Michael into the business would be next, as I have achieved what my father Doug had done with me. My role is now custodian of the business; I’m not as involved at the coal face as I used to be, as I have a management team who I trust to do this. The ethos remains the same as it did in 1924, which my grandfather and father have instilled in me, and I have continued to instil this in the generation coming through, which is very important. (We haven’t lost sight of the core values, despite considerable growth).

Recent achievements would include several large clients we look after, but we like to be discreet with who we act for. Some key recruitments, the new office and consecutive growth of over 20% for the last three years all makes me proud. Internally, our structure is such that it should now self-generate trained staff, as the vast majority of the existing staff are professionally qualified to Chartered Status.

Butterworth are a patron member of Liverpool Chamber. How has the organisation benefitted from its working relationship with the Chamber?

As the Chamber’s own brokers, we are happy to support by reinvesting in local business. The Chamber’s partnership

allows companies who don’t know us to have some comfort, as we often come up with deals for new clients that are seen as too good to be true, such as 20-40% premium savings. So, an external recommendation by a creditable organisation helps.

What are the future ambitions for Butterworth Spengler?

Our ambitions are to maintain our values/ethos: independence, so we can always do what’s best for our clients; continuing to put clients first; clients first (did I mention this?); and everything is a marathon, not a sprint.

We are happy with single premises, which we believe can accommodate us for the next ten years of growth, as we have three-to-four times the space we need at the moment for our number of staff.

We wish to continue to grow, but not at the cost of quality of service or advice. We take the long-term view of generational organic and sustainable growth for our family of clients and staff. We wish to act like an in-house club of friends, all working to help one another.

Catherine said: “Majorettes has been a big part of my life since a friend introduced me to it back in the early 1990s. I tried to use her baton and found that I was pretty good at it, so after loads of moaning at my mum, she finally gave in and let me join a troupe.

Bibby returns to Liverpool city centre

Bibby Travel, the business and marine travel agent that forms part of the Liverpool based Bibby Line Group, has opened back up in the city centre after a 13 year absence.

The company was originally set up in Liverpool in 1997, and provided retail and corporate travel from its city centre location, before moving to the Isle of Man in 1999 to focus on the marine travel requirements of Bibby Ship Management.

Bibby Travel has since set up another location in Mumbai and will retain its Isle of Man operation, but the new location will look to support Bibby Travel’s growing focus on the business travel market. The new operation is based in the Bibby Line Groups head office location

in Duke Street and has brought in a new team to help support the move back to the city.

Sir Michael Bibby, managing director of Bibby Line Group, commented: “I’m delighted that Bibby Travel are back in Liverpool. This will help support the growing business travel market and, through utilising the international diversity of Bibby Line Group, can allow local businesses to connect to a global market place.”

Would you recognise the signs? #BeClearOnCancer tinyurl.com/o6f3rmf @NHSLiverpoolCH HEALTH

This autumn, Liverpool Community Health (LCH) NHS Trust is encouraging organisations across the region to take part in this year’s Movember challenge to help raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Liverpool Community Health currently delivers community-based healthcare service to the 750,000 residents across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and neighbouring areas of Merseyside so it’s a cause that’s close to our hearts, and this is the fourth year running that LCH have supported Movember as a Trust.

Last year’s efforts saw our staff members raising well over £2,000 for male cancer charities, but this year we’re really upping the ante.

Over the coming weeks, we

will be encouraging as many of our male staff members as possible, as well as patients, family members and friends, to

grow a moustache to help raise awareness and funding for prostate cancer. We are also inviting other organisations

across the area to join them in signing up too.

So, why grow a mo? The moustache acts as a catalyst for conversations by creating a talking point about men’s health issues such as prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men in the UK, affecting around 40,000 males who are diagnosed with the disease each year. In fact, about 1 in 8 men will be affected by prostate at some point in their lives.

So, this Movember, we want to encourage males to talk about their health, to find out about any family history of any health conditions, and visit their GP if they have any concerns at all.

For more information about Movember or to register to take part in the campaign now, please visit uk.movember.com.

Meet Shaun Roberts, an A-Level student from St Margaret’s Sixth Form with three A-Levels in English, History and Religious Studies. Having considered University but decided against it due to the costs, he took a chance and attended an Apprenticeship Open Day at Liverpool Chamber.

Shaun takes up the story: “I heard about the Open Day from my mum, who works at the Job Centre. There was a vacancy

being advertised for the Making Business Work (MBW) project, and the Open Day gave me the chance to find out a bit more about it.”

At the Open Day, Shaun met Steven Molyneux and Luke Mythen, both Recruitment Administrators at Liverpool Chamber Training: “Steven talked me through the expectations of the role, the standards expected of the apprentice and the suitable jobs that were available. Luke and I went through the application form together. It was a nice, comfortable environment; Open Days can be daunting!”

After successfully applying for the MBW position, Shaun began working in February and, seven months on, he is enjoying his time at the Chamber: “It’s been really eye-opening. I’ve really developed my communication skills, as well as the level of

professionalism that you need to deal with clients at the Chamber. It’s been great.”

Shaun’s Chamber experience began with the Apprenticeship Open Day, and when asked if he would recommend the drop-in session to others, he replied: “Definitely!

“I think this apprenticeship has opened the door for me to develop and then progress into a position to develop. It’s given me the grounding to be capable and ready, and to strive for more. You gain vital experience at the Chamber, which includes earning the NVQ qualification.”

Liverpool Chamber Training (LCT) holds an Apprenticeship Open Day every Monday, providing drop-in advice and opportunities for aspiring apprentices. It’s the ideal place for young people aged 16-24 to follow in Shaun’s footsteps.

FEATURE LEGAL & FINANCE

Are post termination restrictive covenants seen as a restraint of trade for the employee

or are they there to protect the employer’s business?

For the restrictive covenant to be valid the employer must show that any such contractual term in the employee’s contract is designed to protect a legitimate interest of the employer. The employer cannot simply impose a covenant because he does not want his ex-employee to work for a competitor.

If there is a legitimate interest that requires protection the employer can impose a restriction but it should be no wider than is reasonably necessary to protect that interest. This will mean limiting the covenant not just by reference to the restricted

activities but also the period of time and the geographical extent of the restriction. If the employer fails to consider these then it may well result in the covenant being regarded as too wide and potentially void.

In a recent case where the reasonableness of a restrictive

covenant was considered the High Court said “If the restraint is greater than is reasonably necessary to protect the trade connection, it will not be enforced”.

If the employer wishes to enforce a restrictive covenant he may seek an interim

injunction or alternatively he may seek damages from the employee for breach.

The court would consider whether

The covenant is enforceable• The employee was in breach• The breach caused loss to the • employerIf the employer succeeds in

the above then the loss would be assessed by the court.

The employer may also decide to sue the employee’s new employer if it can be said that he induced the employee to breach his contract.

It is both important to ensure that any restrictive covenants to be included in contracts of employment are considered carefully for each and every employee. It is not acceptable to have a standard covenant since it is not the case that “one size fits all”

After all, “Cash is King” and cash-flow is the lifeblood of any business, especially during these fiscal days.”

At her firm in Knowsley, Parry & Company Solicitors, who specialise in the area of commercial insolvency and debt recovery many companies had come to Kate asking for help in recovering debts that they themselves had been chasing for a while and getting nowhere. Too

often though these companies were asking for help somewhat after the horse had bolted. So she thought how can we stop this happening? Having noticed that there was a gap in many industries she came up with Debt Healthcheck Limited to fill that void.

SO WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU? After breaking all the

BUSINESS CRIME & SECURITY FEATURE

When I was asked to pen this article for Liverpool Chamber Magazine it got me

thinking about trends in city crime and some that are always there.

When researching the data to compile this editorial piece I was reminded crime falls into patterns that are driven by the economic climate of the day.

Let’s take shoplifting as an example. Shoplifting continues to be a challenge for both retailers and my officers who deal with the fallout of individuals being stopped and found in possession of items they have not paid for.

In Liverpool there appears to be distinct patterns of thought for those who commit this crime. Firstly for individual gain, food for them, their family or indeed clothing. Secondly the organised repeat offenders whose criminal lifestyle is set around shoplifting, stealing high end valuable items for resale, to mass shoplifting of a large number of items in one visit to maximise profit, reducing the risk of being caught at one event. And finally, to the thrill seekers, who have no intent for gain but get a rush of adrenalin committing this crime, or simply a spontaneous reckless spur of

the moment decision, based on some misguided belief that they have the right.

The group that concerns me the most is those that are stealing for necessity.

Food and clothing are the

two commodities that are pre-dominantly stolen and affect particular stores within the city.

I cannot be as accurate as I would like, as I know a lot of retailers do not disclose the

levels of theft and shoplifting within their stores as it is commercially sensitive.

My policing teams continue to work with retailers to point out these levels and to assist them in trying to prevent this crime in the first instance. It has, and will always be the case, that it is much more efficient to prevent crime than investigate a crime that has occurred, true both for the police and retailers.

What could retailers be doing to reduce stock loss through theft?

I would like to encourage each shop or retailer to take up my offer of a free and detailed crime prevention survey of their store where shop theft is an issue or before a store’s planning and design stage.

It is very apparent to me that how items are displayed in a store makes them inviting to would be thieves. Let’s just say that if I were to ask my crime prevention officers to layout the stock of a retail outlet, it would be very different to how a shop designer or store manager would. The reason being is that its looked at from two entirely different perspectives.

That said, I do believe there are significant compromises that could be made on both

sides, that would still allow the best offers and the newest stock / fashion items to be displayed in such a way that it is difficult for a would be thief to steal them.

Moving onto the night time economy in the city, the crime that is most prevalent is mobile phone theft.

When individuals go into the city for a night out the last thing on their minds is thinking about keeping their valuables safe at all times. There are lapses that appear to occur, such as when in a dark club or bar packed with other like-minded people pushed together with loud music playing all consuming alcohol, we forget to be vigilant and aware that criminals operate even in these places.

This is not unique to Liverpool and is an issue for all major cities and towns across the UK. I believe we are ahead of most, if not all of them, by doing some innovative things to reduce and prevent this crime.

I have pro-active teams out in the night time economy working with the clubs and bars to identify phone thieves. They enter premises and identify individuals and sometimes teams,

who are not there to socialise. The teams also patrol the streets advising individuals about phone crime such as pointing out where people have left their bags open, or phones on show.

This activity, along with others I am unable to share, are paying real dividends and we are seeing a fall in phone crime. So much so, we are being asked to share what we do with other cities.

Retail crime from both shoplifting and phone theft is a concern but I am pleased that, working with retailers, pubs, clubs and their staff along the City Central and Business Improvement Districts, Council Licensing and local groups, we are winning.

We also have Purple Flag Status for our fantastic city too. This was awarded to Liverpool for being a safe city having a fantastic night time experience with an offer for all who come to enjoy a good night out. This was not awarded by chance, it was a team effort with lots of hard work by all those involved. I am very proud to be the Chief Inspector Operations for the city of Liverpool and so should all that contribute by working here.

Here are a few tips to help keep the run up the Christmas stress free: Set a date set as soon as possible

Only attempt to ask around for dates if your office or department has under 20 people. Any number above that and you’ll never get an agreement. Just set a date and

inform everyone. The key to getting a full turn out is to give plenty of notice, ideally six weeks. Don’t inform people unless you have confirmed the venue.

If you want a Friday night party in the middle two weeks of December you really do need to book by the beginning of October.

Venue:It’s always best to have your

event at a venue rather than in the office. Christmas parties at your place of work rarely meet the mark. Staff members feel more valued if they are taken out, plus you don’t have to worry about office health and safety issues, not to mention the mess the next day.

Decide whether you want to take over a venue for a private party, or attend a shared party. For easy organisation find a venue that will provide entertainment too.

If you just book a restaurant, find out how many sittings they have per evening, otherwise you could find yourself being rushed to finish to make way for the next guests.

Don’t forget to ask about dress code and what time the party will have to finish.

Choose a venue that is central for everyone and close to transport links, so that the journey home for people is as easy and safe as possible. If it’s not, provide transport back to the office as a central point.

Line-up taxis beforehand.

Everyone else wants a taxi at this time of year.

Food and drink

Do provide food and not just drink! As most problems occur due to excess alcohol. Be aware that your company may be held responsible for the actions of staff

CORPORATE CHRISTMAS FEATURE

at Christmas/end-of-year parties.Providing food doesn’t have to

be expensive. Most venues have a set Christmas menu selection and a range of budgets. If the Christmas party is in the office, party platters from good sandwich

companies or supermarkets are very cost effective.

Decide on a drinks policy beforehand. Will the company pay for a welcome drink or the first few drinks only, the whole lot or nothing at all? Make sure staff

know well in advance what drinks will or won’t be provided.

Guest list and invitationsIf you’re organising a very large

party or inviting guests from outside the company, a formal

invitation is required. If not, an all-staff email will suffice. Follow up with reminders a week before and two days before the event.

Make sure you include an RSVP and menu confirmation deadline. Give people an email reminder a day before the deadline to cut down on chasing staff.

Let client or customer facing staff such as reception and customer care know well in advance if they have to organise cover for their jobs so they can attend the party and which department will cover the cost! Build it up and make it fun

Every company has its ‘Scrooges’; so try and create some extra interest as you approach the work Christmas party date. Organise a secret Santa, set a theme, and ask people to come in fancy dress or run an award on the night for the best dressed or most festive looking person. Put disposable cameras on the tables and get them developed the next day and up on the notice board or company intranet.

@CBC _ Liverpool Thank you to @LpoolChamber for their networking event this afternoon at the Radisson Blu. We made some great connections. See you next time!EVENTS

Find out about upcoming events at www.liverpoolchamber.org.uk/events.aspx

The premier Well Connected event on 20 June was a huge success, as delegates met and heard from Mayor Anderson.

The Mayor discussed key issues within the city and upcoming developments for Liverpool City Region. In addition, he was interviewed by Steve Dickson, CEO of Sefton Chamber, covering such topics as transportation, HS2, and the 2014 International Festival of Business.

Over 60 members enjoyed having the opportunity to bring along marketing material and network with other businesses.

The second instalment of the Well Connected series will be held on 18 September at the Novotel, with Bernard Molloy FCILT, Global Industrial Logistics Director of Unipart, as key speaker. Steve Dickson, CEO of Sefton Chamber; Jenny Stewart, COO of Liverpool Chamber; and Mayor Anderson.

Mayor Anderson well connected at Chamber event

Our monthly Meet & Eat has always been a must-attend event for members, but recent numbers prove that the concept has never been more popular.

June’s Meet & Eat at Anfield attracted 65 attendees, and the July edition at the Radisson Blu was attended by 80 delegates. This growth has coincided with Chamber member ImagePlay being on hand to record video footage of the events, some of which can now be viewed on the Chamber website.

Our members have told us that Meet & Eat is a social and relaxing way to meet other people, and that it covers the very best about networking. The combination of discussion, fine food and unusual networking games have allowed Meet & Eat to become an essential part of the Chamber events package.

So, look out for the next Meet & Eat event because, as our members have told us, when it comes to networking events, Meet & Eat is hard to beat!

Sixty Really Useful Seconds with . . .Phil BlythingDirector for GLOW New Media

To readers who may be unfamiliar with GLOW New Media, can you describe what services your organisation provides?

GLOW New Media is a digital agency – we craft great websites, mobile apps, SEO and email campaigns.

Can you explain the role GLOW New Media played in the 60 Really Useful Minutes session on making the most of the Liverpool Chamber website?

We rebooted the Liverpool Chamber website to make it simple for users and, while we were at it, we created some really useful, powerful new tools to allow members to promote their own businesses. So, 60 Really Useful Minutes allowed us to explain how members can use these free tools to win new customers, get a free website and grow awareness of their brand.

Did the organisation benefit from the role it played in the 60 RUM seminar?

I always enjoy the 60 Really Useful Minutes seminars. It’s a great format, I always get interesting questions and, more often than not, we receive enquiries.

Would 1st Choice Health and Safety Ltd consider holding future 60 RUM seminars?

They’re already in the pipeline!

adept4 to provide guidance on Cloud technologyadept4 is hosting a 60 Really Useful Minutes seminar in October based on Cloud technology.

How Cloud technology can boost your business will provide an in-depth look at how organisations can upgrade their systems to cater for the latest Cloud technology.

The Cloud is a recent addition to adept4’s services, which is connected to the company’s full service solution to support the Microsoft Office 365 package.

Peter Birkett, adept4 CEO, said: “With the need for greater mobility and flexibility in the workplace increasing, more and more companies are exploring the benefits of Cloud computing.

“We want to help businesses to understand how to maximise the potential of cloud-based services and show them how our effective full-service package creates an accessible, effective and easy-to-use platform with 24/7 support.”

The 60 RUM will be held at Liverpool Chamber at 09.00 on Friday 18 October.

A Closer Look – Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner 2013

Liverpool Chamber is preparing for its biggest event of the year, the Annual Dinner, which will be held at the Anglican Cathedral on Thursday 5 December. Hundreds of members will be on hand, along with a variety of influential businessmen and women. To find out more, Liverpool Chamber Magazine spoke to Jenny Stewart, Chief Operating Officer at Liverpool Chamber.

Jenny StewartChief Operating Officer Liverpool Chamber

What is the significance of the Annual Dinner within the local business community?

The Annual Dinner is the largest and most prestigious dinner of the year within the city. It’s a great opportunity to welcome our members to a brilliant evening with a top speaker at a stunning venue. The Dinner puts our members first, thanking them for their support and contribution to the Chamber in the past year, and ensuring they have the best time they possibly can have.

Can you tell us when the first Annual Dinner was held, and how it has grown in prestige over the years?

The Chamber has held Annual Dinners intermittently for a hundred years; we know of occasions early in the 20th century of dinners at the Adelphi in honour of the Russian Tsar! In regards to the modern era, the Annual Dinner has been a mainstay of our events calendar since 2005, and the calibre of speakers has been exceptional in the subsequent years.

In recent years, we’ve been fortunate

enough to welcome Michael O’Leary of Ryanair, Mark Thompson (then Director-General of the BBC), Sir Stuart Rose (then Executive Chairman of Marks & Spencer) and Lord Heseltine.

Our members seem to thoroughly enjoy the occasion; the opportunity to enjoy a black-tie evening of socialising and business is always welcome, but we always manage to do something a bit different, whether it’s a theme, entertainment or something different. We’ll have a surprise or two at this year’s event.

The Annual Dinner is the Chamber’s biggest event of the year.

Thanks to @PIP_Promotions for booking on the #AnnualDinner @LivCathedral, we look forward to seeing you there! @LpoolChamber EVENTS

The Anglican Cathedral previously hosted the Annual Dinner in 2011.

In line with Peter Shanks as keynote speaker, this year’s Dinner will have a Maritime theme. How important is it to mark Liverpool’s Maritime success at the Dinner?

This city was largely built upon the strength, prestige and entrepreneurial spirit of our maritime sector. Our docklands were the beating heart of Liverpool throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century, transforming the place into the second city of the British Empire and a global hub of international trade activity.

Today, the maritime industry is thriving once again; the port is once again a major hub of trade and investment, and the investment of companies like Peel into Liverpool and Wirral Waters demonstrates that the maritime industry remains a major force in our industrial fabric.

Our Annual Dinner certainly has a maritime theme and a prominent speaker from within the industry, but it certainly cannot be pigeon-holed as a sector-specific event; this is a dinner for all members in all segments of our business membership.

The Anglican Cathedral has been chosen as host, having previously hosted several Dinners. How do you feel that the Cathedral makes such a prestigious event even more special?

We are incredibly fortunate to have a choice of magnificent venues in Liverpool, but for an event as big as our Annual Dinner, we have to say that the Anglican Cathedral provides the most incredible setting.

We’ve had some excellent dinners at Aintree Racecourse, and of course the Arena and Convention Centre, but the Cathedral has a particular aura about it that was irresistible to us, and we had to go there.

What key Chamber accomplishments in 2013 will be reflected upon at the Dinner?

I think 2013 was the start of a genuine renaissance of our Chamber of Commerce, as we reasserted our core values of being a private sector membership organisation, and really focusing on being a network that enables members to be “well connected”.

The Chamber has been through a rough few years, but there is a spirit and determination growing in the Chamber community that we are becoming a relevant and proactive organisation, which embraces technology and provides a service to members that is once again valued. This is surely worth celebrating.

The Dinner has attracted 500 members each year. What, in your opinion, makes the Dinner so appealing from a member’s standpoint?

I think our dinner has a real element of class and sophistication about it. It’s a great social night for everyone, and we all enjoy a drink with a fabulous meal, but there’s a clear business edge to the evening which elevates it above many other similar dinners taking place through the year. The venue and speaker also play a massive part in the appeal to members, and this year is no different.

In addition to Peter Shanks, which other special guests can delegates expect to see on 5 December?

We have one or two surprises for guests on the night. We really don’t want to give too much away for the time being, but guests can look forward to a really good night and one that they will remember!

Can you summarise why the Annual Dinner is essential for Chamber members to attend?

The Annual Dinner is the biggest and most prestigious event in the Chamber’s calendar of events. More than 500 people come to the Anglican Cathedral to enjoy a wonderful meal and a great night of entertainment, food, drink and networking. Everyone seems to love the Annual Dinner, and our surprises this year are going to make it better than ever.

Top Business Venues

The growth of any organisation is something to cherish. In the case of

SuitYourselfSuits, however, the rapid expansion of the business is made all the more remarkable given that it is barely a year into operations, and given just how much the company has grown.

SuitYourselfSuits, directed and co-founded by Phil Hunt, is designed to combine streamlined sourcing processes with a personal service so that customers can purchase suits and shirts which are stylish, comfortable and affordable.

Phil explained his company’s philosophy to Liverpool Chamber Magazine, which is based on customer satisfaction: “We tell our customers that the suit comes with a guarantee of satisfaction. If there is a problem, we either make it right, or if all else fails, refund your money.” The ideology of the company is also based on emphasising attire, along with personal expression, as being key ingredients for both career and social success.

Starting in Liverpool, which remains the base of the business, SuitYourselfSuits has now expanded to have sales representatives covering various parts of the UK, as well as international locations such as New York. Further growth is expected as the business expands operations even more.

Its global reach is also evidenced by the suit-making process: tailors cut and stitch suits in Thailand, led by Phil’s business partner David Hoard.

As anyone who has ordered a custom, made-to-measure suit would know, tailoring is not an exact science. As Phil described, people have different body shapes and wear their clothes differently: “One of the biggest challenges we face is trying to get the order right, the first time, all the time. But when it comes to suits, this goal is not always reached, 100% of the time. So, part of our business model is to have a process in place whereby we can make amends, literally, to suits and trousers through either shipping it back for adjustments, or working with local craftsmen and women to make minor adjustments. This process is part of our business model, which helps to make our delivery time even faster than some local tailors, and also helps us to make high quality suits accessible to customers at all career levels.”

Since its inception, Phil’s business has grown to nearly 200 suits per month, and he is now in the process of expanding the sales team to include nine people. He has already received support from an investor, along with the aforementioned team in Bangkok, plus two online marketing and promotions professionals.

Phil is also enthusiastic about the new website suityourselfshirts.co.uk: “We recently completed a full revamp of our website, and have just begun taking orders from the new website. This site is the creation of Gary, our web developer, who has done a great job working with us and putting together an absolutely outstanding online presence.”

In addition, students are

offered an affordable payment plan through PayPal to allow them to receive a tailor made suit for when they graduate or for their first job interview or job.

Phil concluded: “Suityourselfsuits are here to get you suited for the future and to make you the best dressed man or woman in the room.”
