The session was very informative and an interactive one.
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
The Department of Psychology at Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College For
Women conducted a webinar on Counselling stages - Egan’s Model on 1st April,
2021 at 10 am, and the resource person of the day was Dr. K. Malathi who is
Counselling Psychologist & NLP practitioner.
Dr. Malathi enlightened us on certain counselling techniques and briefed us on the
Egan’s model of Counselling. Egan’s skilled helper model is a 3-stage model or
framework offered by Egan as useful in helping people solve problems and develop
opportunities. The goals of using the model is to help people ‘to manage their
problems in living more effectively and develop unused opportunities more fully’,
and to ‘help people become better at helping themselves in their everyday lives.’
Thus there is an emphasis on empowerment. Also the person’s own agenda is
central, and the model seeks to move the person towards action leading to
outcomes which they choose and value. This model is not based on a particular
theory of personality development, or on a theory of the ways difficulties develop.
It is a framework for conceptualising the helping process, and is best used in
working on issues in the recent past and the present. As with any model, it provides
a map, which can be used in exploring, but which is not the territory itself. The Egan
model and mentoring are not synonymous; the model can be used in many kinds
of helping relationships, and mentoring/co-mentoring can be done using other
models, (or none!). The model can and should be used flexibly. The model works
best if attention is paid to Rogers’ ‘core conditions’, the helpers approach to the
speaker being based on genuineness, respect, and empathy, and if principles of
good active listening are remembered throughout. The Egan model aims to help
the speaker address 3 main questions:
1. ‘What is going on?’
2. ‘What do I want instead?’
3. ‘How might I get to what I want?’
Not everyone needs to address all 3 questions, and at times people may move back
into previously answered ones. For simplicity, we’ll look at the model sequentially.
However, the skilled helper will work with the speaker in all or any of the stages,
and move back and forward, as appropriate. She concluded the talk by stating that
if the end point of producing an action plan has been reached, the experience of
trying it out could be the starting point for a follow-up mentoring/co-mentoring
session. The work would start in stage I again, telling a new story. If an action plan
had not been reached, that’s fine too, and the model can be used over a series of
sessions. She concluded the talk by stating that the key in using the model, as with
any theory or model, is to keep the speakers agenda central, the individual in the
foreground and theory in the background, and to use the model for the person,
rather than vice versa. Followed by an interactive Q&A session with the audience,
the webinar finally came to end.

As we all know the intensity and the level of seriousness of the novel coronavirus or Covid 19 is threatening and as per statistics - the highest number of covid cases seen was on 16 September 2020 with a number of 97,894 new cases. Since then, there has been a gradual decrease in the number of cases but it’s started rising again as of now. It’s surely difficult to distinguish between what is true and what isn’t due to all uncertainty and fake news surrounding it. To combat the various rumors on the application of the vaccine and about its side effects, we, the NSS Unit of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women invited Dr.SindhuKoganti to address us on Covid-19 Vaccination: Acceptance and its Associated Factors. About 100 NSS Volunteers took part in this webinar and learnt many new ideas and information about the novel coronavirus. She has 10 years of experience in her career and is well versed in her field. She works as a consultant Pulmonologist in FORTIS HOSPITALS. She has published many journals which include many case report and comparative studies. Dr Sindhu mentioned how the virus infects the membrane of the alveoli (lungs) where respiration actually occurs and how that’s the main cause of breathlessness due to Covid 19 virus that affects many people throughout the world. Dr Sindhu also spoke on the effects of Covid on the Heart and brain. She mentioned many new precautionary measures and enlightened us of the various companies that produce the vaccines. She stressed on the importance of the getting the vaccine especially to those who are elderly as the chances of them being affected is more. She stressed on the reason behind why it’s not advisable to wear mask while exercising or jogging. Towards the end of the session, Dr Sindhu clarified the doubts posed by both the students and teachers. Everyone learnt a lot of productive information on the recent cases of Covid 19, the various precautionary measures that need to be ensured to stay safe and both the causes and consequences of it.

WHERE IS GOD?
Where is God?
Sounds similar, right?
Ofcourse, we’re the ones who ask
Not knowing, he is inside us.
I saw a Women, feeding people on the streets
I bought some food and joined her,
Looking at the poor people, “where is God”? ,she asked
I looked at her and said , “here she is”!
I saw a man, weeping in front of the emergency ward
There was nobody , I went to comfort him
He said , he saved the boy from drowning
looking at the small boy, “where is God”? He asked
I looked at him and said, “ here he is”!

FLY HIGH, AS THE SKY
Shine blue, like the sky shines,
With the aid of the sun and the moon.
Float as the cloud floats,
Until you reach your destination
soon.
Go as tranquilly as the day goes.
Never letting people know,
How near or far you can go.
As how the day changes into night,
Change your darkness into light.
Go high as you want to go,
With the strength of your will.
Stay colorful like the rainbow.
Let your happiness glow,
And make your desires come true.
Let your success scream loud,
And make your foe cry.
Let your dreams make your troubles blow,
And make you-
Fly high, blue as the sky.
