Chocolate 101Truffles, bonbons, chocolate bars, chocolate lava cake, mud pie, chocolate ice cream… Chocolate commonly comes in different formsthat are used to produce these rich concoctions we crave.

DARK CHOCOLATE A more bitter tasting chocolate. Also known as thehealthy chocolate due to the antioxidants it contains, which are said toaid in the reduction of blood pressure.

MILK CHOCOLATE Chocolate liquor with extra cocoa butter, sugar, milkand vanilla added. By far, the most popular form of chocolate. It is forthe most part an eating chocolate.

WHITE CHOCOLATE Technically isn’t really chocolate, according to theFood and Drug Administration, and has no real guidelines for itscomposition. It is primarily made of cocoa butter, sugar, milk, and vanilla.

UNSWEETENED OR BAKING CHOCOLATE This is simply cooled, hardenedchocolate liquor. This is primarily used as an ingredient in recipes. Y ouwould never want to eat this like a candy bar! Semi-sweet chocolate isalso used mostly in recipes, like chocolate chip cookies. It has extracocoa butter and sugar added.

CHOCOLATE LIQUOR All chocolate is derived from the liquid form ofchocolate. It’s what is added to or taken from the liquor that producesthe different forms.

with, we got more space. We started outliving in a 700-square-foot condo, whichcould have been cozy if we could havegotten rid of half the contents. Instead, wegot rid of the condo. We moved to a housethree times the size of our condo, and I’vebeen in heaven ever since.

Now that I have more space, I also havemore patience. A pile is not quite asoverwhelming as it used to be. A box ofchildhood toys can be placed in the atticinstead of a corner of the living room. Ifhe wants to hang onto every T-shirt fromlittle league to his beer league from lastsummer, who am I to argue?

Yeah, right. You think I’m going to let himget off that easy? The attic is filling up fast! And as our family grows, so will ourpossessions. Besides, I understand that noteveryone has the luxury of space so I’mhere to help. But where to begin?

CONFESSIONS OF

A Pack Rat’s Wife

Treasure versus trash — there’s nobetter time to decide what’s what. You’ll make more room, andperhaps even a few dollars.

I meant what I said that sunny November daytwo years ago… through good times and bad, sickness and health, and piles of “memories”everywhere. Okay, so the piles of junk, ahem,I mean, treasures, weren’t part of our vows, but maybe they should have been.

I admit it. I am a neat freak. I like thingssimple, uncluttered, clean. So, how exactlydo you make it work when you’re marriedto someone who thinks the shriveled upboutonniere he wore at a wedding fouryears ago belongs on top of his dresser? This is the same person who dove acrossthe floor to keep me from throwing away apen that was out of ink simply because itwas from one of the colleges he applied to.

These are true stories, I swear. And thereare a hundred more where they came from. The good news is, there is hope. Whetheryou’re the “clutterbug” or the “neat freak,”there is a way to make it work. To start

I love him, I do.

First, pick a part of the house to work on.Are you ready to tackle the attic, or is thecloset a more pressing matter? Once youdecide, be sure to set aside plenty of timefor this project. Depending on the severityof the situation, you may need anywherefrom a few hours to a few days.

Now comes the hard part. How do youknow what to keep? Unfortunately, that’s adecision you have to make. But let me saythis. There’s no reason to throw away thefamily albums, but if it’s the note that Janepassed you in eighth grade asking if you likedDennis, and you don’t remember Dennis, orJane for that matter, why hold onto it?

If, like me, it’s your spouse who can’t partwith anything, try boxing up things they saythey can’t part with and leave them for aperiod of time. If they don’t miss them, aftersay 6 months, do they really need them?Chances are, they’ll be so pleased with theadditional space and organization, they’ll be okay with getting rid of a few things. Now is also a great time to get creative.Remember those T-shirts collected over thelast 30 years? Why not turn them into aquilt? It’s a great way for him to hold ontohis cherished memories, and for you to turn a few boxes of “junk” into somethinguseful. And if you don’t already know howto quilt, it’s a great opportunity to learn.

You can also turn that box ofmiscellaneous pictures into a collage. Or take a box of knick-knacks from anevent and arrange them in a shadow box to display in your living room.

And if all else fails, how about turningthe decluttering into a friendlycompetition? Perhaps you can see whocan get the most money for their things. That way, not only do you end up richer ,but you get bragging rights too.

Not very creative? That’s okay. Certainlyyou appreciate the value of a dollar.Perhaps money is your motivation. Wouldyou or your spouse be more willing to partwith items if you got money in return? How about unloading those mint conditionplatform shoes at a tag sale? If that’ s toomuch work, consider selling some largeritems on an online auction site. You caneven vow to use all the money forsomething you can enjoy together—perhaps that long-overdue vacation you’vebeen saving for.

Keep in mind, donations can be profitablefor you as well. You won’t necessarily getcash in your pocket, but you can get agreat tax deduction—and we can all useone of those. Besides, wouldn’t you ratherpass these things along to someone whocan use them now, rather than hold ontothem just in case you decide you need thema few years down the road? And just thinkof that warm, fuzzy feeling you’ll get fromknowing you’ve helped someone in need.

And if all else fails, how about turning thedecluttering into a friendly competition?

Organizationalsimplicity is aharmonious home

Perhaps you can see who can get the mostmoney for their things. That way, not onlydo you end up richer, but you get braggingrights, too.

Okay, so you’ve found the motivation rightfor you. You’ve determined which items aretrash and which are treasures; now it’s timeto organize. Get yourself to your favorite“everything store” and purchase somesturdy plastic bins in a variety of sizes. Ifthis stuff is worth keeping, it’s worth storingit properly. Get a big roll of masking tapeand a large black marker so you can label

all the containers. If this sounds rathersimple, that’s because it is. The hard part is done. You’ve found your motivation andmade the difficult decisions about what tokeep. Now you just need to add a littlesweat and muscle and you’re done!

Please keep in mind, you can help pack ratsorganize, but you can never change themcompletely. You can beg and plead for themto part with their childhood treasures, butsometimes it’s easier to just pack up thosememories, label the box, and get on withyour life. Good luck!
