Canadian contribution

• Canada provided leadership in leading the WP for the VRI since the beginning

• Canada has been supporting the JPIAMR-VRI throughactive and constant in-kind contribution since Jan 2017.

• As of Jan 2019, under the JPIAMR-CIHR’s agreement Canada will be renewing its full commitment to the JPIAMR-VRI by allocating human and financial resourcestowards the global operations management of the JPIAMR-VRI.

• There was no specific WG meetings/activities sincelast MB as main focus was on the JPIAMR-VRI Network call.

Individual mobility programmesShort-Term FellowshipsShort-term fellowships could fund exchanges of up to 3 months between organisations engaged in the JPIAMR-VRIProgramme Networks. The aim is to facilitate valuable collaborations within individual JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks andbetween different JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks engaged in the JPIAMR-VRI. Short-Term Fellowships would be intendedto be for research-related activities rather than consultations. The fellowships could cover travel plus subsistence of thefellow only and not of dependents. Short-Term Fellowships would be awarded for collaborations between organisations inthe JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks in JPIAMR Member States.

Long-term fellowshipsLong-term fellowships could be awarded for a period of 12-24 months to support research, training and capacity buildingvisits to organisations in the JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks in JPIAMR Member States.

SecondmentsSecondments could be awarded for a period of 1-12 months to support research, training and capacity building visits. Theywould be aimed at senior researchers wishing to undertaken secondments in organisations involved in the JPIAMR-VRIProgramme Networks in JPIAMR Member States. The time could be split into several stays not exceeding 12 months in totaland not going beyond the project duration. The splits would need to be justified and be beneficial for the transfer ofknowledge activities.

Travel awardsTravel awards could be awarded to students, postdoctoral fellows, new investigators and knowledge users from the JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks to present their own research at national and international meetings and/or conferences. Coverscosts for travel and accommodation, meals, conference registration fees, printing costs.

Planning and Dissemination GrantsPlanning and Dissemination Grants could be awarded for a period of 1-12 months to support activities such as:• Activities that help potential teams to work together to identify research questions or emerging issues and priorities that

could form the basis of a grant application;• Consultations regarding needs, gaps and opportunities in the AMR One Health research landscape, priority policy issues

and/or priority research questions;• Initial planning and discussion of an AMR research project to assess its viability and the partnership options;• Environmental scan or synthesis of relevant literature, activities or programs;• Planning to assess possible commercial viability of a discovery;• Knowledge exchange involving AMR stakeholder linkages that could lead to submitting to a funding opportunity;• Gatherings of partners and researchers with similar objective to facilitate regional/national and/or international

collaboration among individuals or groups from a variety of backgrounds.• Education of groups such as patients, health professionals, community organisations, policy-makers, the general public;• Knowledge dissemination that will inform practice, clinical care, partnership best practices, policy and decision making;• Dissemination and/or discussion of research findings at scientific meetings, workshops, conferences, congresses or

symposia;• Development and dissemination of knowledge translation products and tools (e.g., written materials in various formats, lay

summaries, decision support tools, educational materials, web sites).

Commercialisation Grants/Proof of Concept GrantsThese grant types could be awarded to advance discoveries/inventions (intellectualproperty on new products or tools) to a state of use suitable for commercialisabletechnologies, with a view to attract new investment, create new science-based businesses,organisations and initiatives, in the private, not-for-profit, or public sectors. Such a fundingmechanism combined with the networking and communication activities within theJPIAMR-VRI could have a profound impact on the translation of basic and pre-clinicalresearch into the R&D pipeline.

Top-up funding mechanismVarious countries have difficulties in participating in the JPIAMR Joint Transnational Callsdue to differences in the way they organise national funding in their funding organisations.As such, some JPIAMR Member States have suggested that they contribute to alreadyfunded projects. One such way would be to include these Member States to provide top-upfunding grants into the already funded and established JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks.This would support inclusion of scientists and experts from these countries and broaden thefunding base of JPIAMR.

International Arrangement funding could be made available via national funding agencies.These funding bodies could be national funding bodies or science ministries. Positions inJPIAMR-funded projects could be advertised and available positions for such postings couldbe opened following JPIAMR calls, so JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks could express aninterest in hosting young non-European/non-JPIAMR Member State scientists.

Research infrastructureMaintain the JPIAMR database of AMR research and infrastructures to promotecollaboration, use and increased trans-national access. Support a programme incollaboration with ESFRI and ERIC for increasing access to, use of, and collaboration betweenAMR research resources and infrastructures. Provide data on academic, SME and inidustryprojects, and a portfolio of AMR research outputs and results for related industries, healthcare institutions and public health decision-makers, to faciltate development of jointtranslational projects.

Educational programmesJPIAMR-VRI Courses & Workshops/Conferences ProgrammeThe JPIAMR-VRI Courses & Workshops Programme could support and encourage the sharing of knowledgeand skills across all career stages and disciplines in the field of AMR, encompassing the needs andrequirements of the JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks. JPIAMR-VRI Courses and Workshops would beorganised by leading scientists and experts engaged in the JPIAMR-VRI Programme Networks.• Workshops are meetings that cover different aspects of AMR related areas, bringing scientists and

experts together to present and discuss their latest findings, or facilitate the exchange of informationrelated to thematic programme areas.

• Practical courses promote the transfer of new methods and emerging techniques in AMR areas. Coursescould enable participants to acquire new techniques that could be implemented in their homelaboratories. Practical courses would have to be limited, for example, to between 20-25 participants(excluding speakers). Courses could last for varied durations, for example, between three and ten days.

An example of an educational programme is the joint programme that is currently under development byJPIAMR is the programme being set up involving JPIAMR, CarbX, GARDP, Novo Holdings and Wellcome Trust.This educational programme will be a series of webinars/meetings/trainings in the area of Therapeutics andDrug Discovery.
