    Writer’s Block

    Waiting for the break of day

    Searching for something to say

    Counting lights against the sky

    Giving up I close my eyes

    With the voice of Terry Kath booming throughout the large automobile flying down Reche Road, I depart the lush green hills of Fallbrook once again. I was making the twenty minute drive to Escondido that was within the half day’s ride that I have been railing about for the past five years in these constrictive, yet freeing pages. Tonight I would be dining at Vinz in southern River Diego. I had sampled the fare there before. Small tastes to entice the buds of my tongue, but this would be my first full meal there.

    Along the way, I picked up my good friends Richard, Kurt and Matthew. I would be dropping them off at The Comstock for Karaoke, but promised no return ride in case my dinner date went well. Very well.

    My entourage was giving me endless advice as we made our way down Historic Route U.S. 395 as it wound it’s way south. There’s no way to describe how much I appreciate people telling me how to write and run this magazine, because I don’t. But since the aver-age I.Q. in the Town Car was relatively high, for a change I decided to listen to them.

    Matthew suggested that I should take a page from one of the greatest sports radio personalities of our time, Jim Rome. More you, less me. You being my readers, me being me. I told him about my story “The Perris Review” from an earlier issue, and how I had tried that before to no avail. Kurt chimed in with “Maybe they’re ready now.” I told them that I would try again next issue, and that seemed to satisfy them. As we pulled into The Comstock’s parking lot and the guys got out, Richard left me with one last piece of wisdom. He said, “Have a good time, all the time.” I would never forget that statement.

    ADVENTURES IN PARADISE

    So here we go again. Five minutes after the Comstock drop. I’m sitting outside of Vinz, in the patio dining area, waiting for my date to arrive. There’s a vast selection of craft beers available here, and I had gone inside earlier to examine each and every artistic and elaborate new beer pull that tries to attract my attention by outdoing the knob on either side of it. When there is a beautiful woman tend-ing the bar, my choice is easy. “Goose me beautiful.” Then I look into her eyes to see if my choice amuses, shocks or otherwise makes some sort of impression on the young lady. Since Josh was behind the bar on this particular night, I got the beer that I actually enjoy the most. I took it outside and started watching the interesting cast of char-acters strolling down Grand Avenue.

    The dinner crowd had started to fill the seats around me, so by watching jaws drop on the gentlemen at the nearby tables, I could tell that Tracy had arrived and was ap-proaching from behind me. I rose and pulled out her chair for her. Tracy wasn’t raised by wolves, so she knew how to accept the courtesy. Our server was instantly at her side and soon thereafter we were both enjoying a good beer and an appetizer. Her’s was a bread dish, mine oyster shooters.

    We ate a great meal. Next month I’ll ask Jennifer Hernandez to come down here so that this publication can give the food we ate the justice it deserves. Meanwhile, I was entranced by every word from Tracy’s mouth. I actually was listening to what she was saying without having to put any effort into the task. Intelligence and beauty has always been a lethal combination for me, and since my date had to work the next day at a job that matters to so many, we parted ways. Take a wild guess at who gets my;

    BEST DINNER - Vinz in Escondido. Check out this month’s “The Cactus Calendar” for next month’s lock for BEST ROCK & ROLL SHOW, as I will be joining Satelite at Vinz on New Year’s Eve for a night that will live in infamy for years to come. Vinz is in a historic old building that ghosts like to inhabit, so it was no surprise that Richard, Kurt and Matthew were waiting patiently by the Silver Streak parked promi-nently out front. We all climbed in and headed west, where we found the;

  • I am a California native who grew up just south of River Diego. The memories of that area’s diversity in its foods, as well as the locations serving those foods, has remained with me as I moved north, along with the endless flavors associated with that region. Having such a wide variety of places to choose from was great, but I soon found out that it was the simple beach style, grab it to go deli shops, that seemed to have the best tasting sandwiches. This, along with the convenience I craved when I was heading out to the next local event.It was the mid 90’s when I happened to stumble across one such

    family owned sub shop. It was located near the ocean, and it was there that I first met my fate with the Chicken Pesto on Sourdough. It was divine! As the years rolled past and my location changed, my love for that sandwich continued. While no other Chicken Pesto on Sourdough could compare, I continued searching. Then out of the blue, fate and I met again! This time around it was with a Turkey Pesto Wrap, made by “Downtown Deli and Coffee Company” located on Harvard Street in Historic Downtown Hemet.It had been a while since I had ventured into an atmosphere that

    offered a Deli / Coffee Shop combined in one, which I found to be very pleasant. In fact, the urban modern decor style is set up with the express intention of allowing anyone to feel right at home. The comfy couch, cushy pillows, sofa chairs and table booths, along with the eclectic mix of home decor accessories, allow one to gaze leisurely around the space. Time stops, and worries disappear Not to mention, that a few of the interior walls are dedicated to inde-pendent artists who want to display their works with dignity.

    Despite the awesome atmosphere to vedge in, it was their Turkey Pesto Wrap that had won my attention in a delightful manner. Be-fore I get into the details, some foodies may question; Is there is a proper way to construct a sandwich wrap? According to the general public, the proper construction doesn’t matter. It’s the overall taste that conquers, overshadowing the mere presentation. Though this may be true, I’d say that the architecture of my sandwich wrap was well designed, and assembled with great care. I was able to eat it joyfully, as opposed to wearing it. The object of my indulgence was nothing less than I expected it to

    be in it’s overall flavor. The sliced turkey breast, crispy bacon and slightly melted jack cheese made up the body of the beast, while the Romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions blended those three main ingredients to near perfection. Then it is smothered in a superb pesto sauce and served in your choice of wrap. The combi-nation was a “Heavenly Feast” of flavors and ingredients that had brought this Turkey Pesto Wrap to life! Ultimately, after I had devoured every inch of the tasty wrap, I sat

    for a while in food overload mode. I was pleased with the overall venture of the day that I had spent at the “Downtown Deli & Cof-fee Company”. The atmosphere there is inviting, and the customer service is professional. Also, the menu is quite exciting in that one is able to choose from a wide variety of cold cut classics, hot sandwiches, home made soups and salads. Of course, the drink section offers a wide variety of coffees, teas and smoothies. What’s your favorite? As they say; “Life is like a sandwich. You have to fill it with the

    best ingredients.” I tend to agree. Regarding the Turkey Pesto Wrap at the “Downtown Deli & Coffee Company” in Historic Downtown Hemet, I would have to say; “Now That’s a Wrap!”

    ADVENTURES IN PARADISEfeeling that the smile will be the same on their twenty fourth anniversary.

    After closing down Dani P’s and most of the other bars along the highways and byways of this paradise we live in, I some-how made it home and sat down to write. Only then, as the block took over, did I realize what Mr. Kath had been vocal-izing all night long as I drove through the night.

    The ensuing guitar solo reminded me of the licks Tad regu-larly lays down every Sunday at P.K.’s Roadhouse in Lake Elsinore. It’s not capitalized as Best Open Mic only because of a Thursday last month that will be. The open mic phenome-non is sweeping the country, and River Diego is no exception to the rule. Check out the Open Mic schedule on page && for the one’s I know about, and call me with the ones I don’t. I’ll try to get them in. I was at P.K.’s for the last Sunday Open Mic in November. It was Ted Staak’s birthday and the place was packed to the gills with performers. I didn’t get a chance to play that day, and I didn’t see Tad there either. He’s proba-bly back in Spain again, livin’ the dream. I hope he gets back soon, as my famous shyness makes meeting gorgeous women more difficult than when he’s on stage. P.K.’s did have the;

    BEST OPEN MIC NIGHT - The Acoustic Jam at P.K.’s hosted by Byron Abel. It’s on Thursday nights from 7:00pm til the cows come home. I won’t miss Byron Abel and the Outlaws’ show on December 17th at the Ponderosa Bar & Grill, and neither should you. Now I’ve played with some of the best musicians in the world. Just ask them. Humility isn’t usually involved. Since they were so very good, I’d strap on the Bass Guitar and lay down the bottom. No big deal, the girls were just as pretty. Byron gave me the chance to play my twelve string. I was louder than anybody else there, and everyone commented that they had never heard anything like it before. Those of you who take advantage of the “Cactus Calendar” herein, might notice that I’ll be hosting my own Open Mic at Little Louie’s in Hemet on December 13th. Come on down and join the fun. Hemet is becoming the rival of Cleveland for the title of Rock & Roll capital of the world. In fact, that’s where I found the;

    BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE - SOLO GUITARIST - Dave Weaver at Sweet Baby Jane’s in Hemet. All the tunes I needed to hear that night, and some that I didn’t want to hear because of the painful memories Dave’s heartfelt per-formance brought back. I thought I’d be safer there if I went back at 3:00pm on a Saturday afternoon, but I ran smack dab into the;

    Heaven, Hotel California and Bohemian Rhapsody performed on Ukulele before. I doubt I’ll ever hear it done better again. He’s got a guitar that looks like one of those “Guitar Hero” toy controllers that can make piano notes appear out of thin air too. Check the Cactus Calendar and see and hear for yourself. It was just around the corner that I found the hardest category that I try to fill every month in the form of the:

    PRETTIEST SMILE - REDHEAD - Amy at Michelada Factory Sports Bar in Hemet. Without knowing who I think I am, she treated me just like any other customer who wandered in off the street. Wander in sometime yourself and you’ll know what I’m talking about. They have live music Friday and Saturday nights that entrances even the most jaded listener. Since I took French class back in junior high school, the extent my knowl-edge of Spanish is “Uno mas por favor seniorita,” and “Eres hermosa”. Not the most proficient multilingual person you’ll ever meet, yet when I cross the international border to the south of us, it’s all I need. At Michelada, the songs were sung in spanish. Music is universal, so I understood every word. The French class back at Brookhurst Junior High School had the prettiest girls at that school attending, so I still stand by that long ago decision. I’ve heard that the french are the fast-est growing minority in California, so speaking fluent french will be very useful in all facets of life. Unfortunately, I hear what I want to hear and disregard the rest.

    Staring blindly into space

    Getting up to splash my face

    Wanting just to stay awake

    Wondering how much I can take

    I’m up against my monthly deadline to get this thing finished and words are hard to come by. I glance at the clock, and telling time is becoming harder and harder. So many great things are happening around River Diego that it’s very dif-ficult to single out the cream of the crop. This next category was an exception.

    BEST COUNTRY WESTERN SHOW - SOLO PERFORMER - Bob Wayne at Red Room Music Bar in Lake Elsinore. Since Country Music isn’t my favorite flavor to listen to, I had not heard of him before that night. The proprietor of the Red Room walked over to the jukebox and played a few of his songs for me. I actually liked “Love Songs Suck” and when Justin played “The Working Man’s Song” with his next dollar, he commented that Hank Williams III had recorded it for one of his records. I mentioned that Hank III was a name I was familiar with since my band had opened for him when he played at The Doll Hut right there in the shadow of The Mat-terhorn on the other side of The Insurmountable Mountains to the West of River Diego. Chux Myth was sitting nearby and said “Hank Williams III never played The Doll Hut” or some-thing to that effect, to which I replied that it was a long time ago, but yes he did and I was there. Bob Wayne was flying to Brazil right after the show that night at Red Room Music Bar, but would be returning with his full band to play another venue in River Diego in December. Now that’s a show I’d like to see.

    It’s pretty cool to watch a performer sing and play his songs after listening to the songs he wrote on the jukebox earlier in the day. That’s what I did that night at The Red Room. If Bob Wayne is still in contact with Hank III, we could try to confirm the Doll Hut story since there was a memorable party after the gig that night. Hank III would definitely remember me. Alas, that will never come to be. When I used to play, back before the turn of the century, my stage name wasn’t Cactus Bob. It was either Bobnoxious or B.L.Z.Bob, depending on the folks I was playing with at the time.

    PRETTIEST SMILE BRUNETTE - Darian at Idyll-A-While in Idyllwild.

    I can see by the hands on my clock that it’s nearly four o’clock in the morning and I have to wrap things up now and put this issue to bed. My vision is starting to blur, and I can’t tell if it’s twenty five minutes to four, or twenty six minutes to four. I guess I’ll just leave that up to you to figure out next time I see you. Meanwhile, I’ll let Terry Kath of the band Chicago play me out.

    Should I try do some more
