Oh, by the way,

Time for the bi-annual reminder! Applicable for ALL Catholic Institutions

and any other IRS 501(c)(3) organizations!

Each election offers an opportunity for Catholics to put their faith into action. “In

the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life

is a moral obligation... The obligation is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow

Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do.” (Forming Consciences for Faithful

Citizenship, 2015)

Too often however politics becomes a contest of powerful interests, partisan

attacks, sound bites and media hype. The Church calls for a different kind of political

engagement that is shaped by moral convictions of a well formed conscience, focused on

the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good and the protection of the weak and

vulnerable

This is a highly technical area of law that involves multiple tests and audit guidelines established by the

IRS. When in doubt as to the propriety of any plan or publication obtain the advice of the diocesan lawyer or the

Indiana Catholic Conference. Additional guidance may be found at

www.usccb.org/about/generalcounsel/political-activity-guidelines.cfm

Prohibited Church Activity Diocesan officials and agencies, clergy, religious, parish councils, parish

organizations, and other Church affiliates must avoid the following:

1. Endorsing or opposing political candidates or parties, or actively engaging in political campaigns for or

against any candidate or party (for example, homily, newsletter, web sites, flyers and so on).

2. Permitting the preparation, collation, or distribution on church premises of any flyers or other printed

materials that favor or oppose a candidate or a party.

3. Using diocesan or parish bulletins or web sites to support, promote, endorse, or oppose any particular

political party or candidate.

4. Evaluating candidates in writing or in speech. Types of objectionable evaluations include the following:

a. Labeling a candidate as “pro-life” or “anti-school choice” removes objectivity by not allowing

readers/listeners to evaluate a candidate’s position for themselves.

b. Using plus (+) or minus (-) signs to rate candidates implies an endorsement or opposition.

c. Rating candidates on a scale of “one to ten,” for example; or otherwise saying, “X is good, Y is

better.”

d. Issuing “marked” sample ballots that tell people how to vote.

5. Giving church money or any monies arising from church-related sources to candidates for elective office or

holders of political office.

6. Using church facilities in any manner that would connote endorsement of a political candidate.

7. Distributing voter education or other campaign materials prepared by any candidate, political party or PAC.

8. Collecting signatures on or encouraging voters to sign petitions to enable any candidate to appear on an

election ballot

includes music led by Catholic artist PJ Anderson, engaging “TED Talk” style presentations,

opportunities for parish group activities, breakouts with interactive prayer experiences, and much more. PJ is a Christian singer-songwriter from Nashville, TN. PJ has a unique ability to connect with his listeners. He can write songs that touch those places deep down in your heart where joy and pain reside in harmony. His heartfelt lyrics strike a chord and draw out those emotions that are waiting to be uncovered. His worship opens hearts to the love of the Lord and helps every worshiper enter into the presence of Our God.

PJ learned to play guitar from a nun, Sister Charita in 5th grade. He landed a role in the high school musical, Grease and started a band in college that opened up doors to writing his own songs. After college, he was a Youth Minister and played in worship bands until he made the move from Chicago to Nashville. PJ now travels the country inspiring youth, playing concerts, leading worship at conferences and retreats and encouraging youth through his prayerful form of worship. Most notably, PJ has led music at Mega Workshops at the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in 2015 and 2013 as well as leading worship at Catholic Heart Work Camp (CHWC) for the past 6 summers. He headlined the Youth Rally and Mass For Life at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC for 30,000 youth in 2016. PJ also played at World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, where 3 million Catholic and Christian youth joined with Pope Francis to grow in faith.

(Above: Playing at 2016 March for Life, Verizon Center, Washington, D.C.) Registration will be available this fall in both English and Spanish. If you have questions, please contact Paul Sifuentes at [email protected] or 765-269-4654.

Fall Break for Students Fall Break for students is this week. (For us old timers, we NEVER had a fall break!)

Well, Rachel, our Cluster Business manager is taking the week with her children. She WILL

NOT be available…in fact she won’t even be in the State. She’ll be 1,000 miles away! No

reason to call her! As usual, I’ll be in and out. I’ll answer the door or phone if

available…otherwise you’ll hear Mac-K patrolling! If not available, please leave a message.

Thanks

Our monthly Lazarus collection is altering the next two (2) months, October and November. The Pulaski County Human Services has asked our Cluster to take a BIG responsibility! Deals are in the works. Rather than collecting specific food, paper products or personal items monthly, our Cluster was asked to provide the hams…and there are many people who need help. Our Cluster can buy in bulk. SO, 20-21 October and 17-18 November, we will be collecting money to help defray the expense of the hams. PLEASE, whatever you do, PLEASE write CHRISTMAS HAMS on your envelopes or MEMO of your checks. Thank you for again participating in this social justice ministry.

The Vatican on Saturday released the message of Pope Francis for this year’s World Mission Sunday, in

which the Pontiff is inviting young men and women who want to follow Christ, to seek, to discover and to

persevere in their vocation. Observed by the Catholic Church on the penultimate Sunday of October

every year, World Mission Sunday in 2018 falls on 21 October. Instituted by Pope

Pius XI in 1926, the annual day encourages prayers, cooperation and help for

missions as well as reminds Christians about the fundamental missionary character

of the Church and of every baptized person.

On this day, we are called – as baptized Catholics – to celebrate and support

local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America

and Europe, an area that covers more than half the territory of the globe. Through the

work and witness of mission priests, religious and lay leaders, the poor receive practical help and experience

God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace.

Next week-end is World Mission Sunday. Please use the envelopes included with your bi-monthly

packets. Thank you for your continued support.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch….fr. K

St. Francis St. Joseph St. Peter

In May, a request was sent out to our Cluster asking for religious items to be donated to Sister Mary

George Kissel, OSB, a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand, IN. Sr.

Mary George sends items to underprivileged schools in the Appalachians. The

Cluster’s response was overwhelming. In August, boxes of items were taken down

to the Monetary. There were rosaries, statues, plaques, prayer cards, medals, etc.

Sister Mary George expresses her appreciation. “ I am amazed and breathless when

I see all the boxes of religious articles and school supplies that you gave me for

those in need. I am going to work longer and harder to reach more people and

children as you have helped me. All the people in your parishes are being prayed

for by me and my Community. I am walking on Cloud 9, not using my cane most of the time, thinking of all

the wonderful things I have to work with and share with others. This and more will all go to the poorest schools

in Appalachia, KY. very soon. I will sing your praises for your work you are doing to help God’s poor”.

We continue to collect religious items for Sr. Mary George’s ministry. Boxes are in the vestibules of the

churches. Please donate any religious items that you are not using. We will be going to see the Sisters of St.

Benedict’s in Ferdinand on November 17 and will be honored to take our Cluster’s donations to Sr. Mary

George. Pictured are Sister Mary Philip and Sister Mary George, who turned 95 in September.

Thank you all for your generous donations.

Diane Kolish, Julie Chapman and Linda Webb

of Gods word, and a heart for His flock, you give of yourself, and you stand on the Rock.

Happy Pastor Appreciation Sunday, Fr. K!
