The Catholic Church in the

United States celebrates National

Vocation Awareness Week, 3-9

November. During this week,

dioceses across the U.S. lead the

effort in parishes and schools to

uphold and encourage the fostering of

vocations among the faithful and to

pray for those currently discerning a

call to marriage, ordained ministry, or

consecrated life.

In his message for the 2019 World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Pope Francis reminded

the faithful that unlike a secular career, a vocation is a gift born from God’s own initiative: “The

Lord’s call is not an intrusion of God into our freedom; it is not a ‘cage’ or burden to be borne.

On the contrary, it is the loving initiative whereby God encounters us and invites us to be a part

of a great undertaking.”

Whereas choosing a career requires much “doing” – such as the accomplishment of

various tasks and goals – vocational discernment requires much “being.” At its core, vocational

discernment is a process of self-discovery. Assisted by divine grace, each person is invited by

the Lord to receive the gift of a specific vocation whereby they manifest God’s love in a

particular way to the outside world. In the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony, the husband and wife

image the Trinity by their communion of love that produces new life; in ordained ministry,

priests and deacons are called to minister in the person of Christ, the High Priest and Servant;

and in consecrated life, each member is called to bear Christ’s love through a particular

charism.

Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA All of us know about the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana! Did you know there is an Archdiocese

for the Military Services (AMS)? The AMS receives no funding from the military for any of its costs. The

National Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is a triennial collection approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2012 and first taken in 2013. This year’s collection is next week-end, 9-10 November.

The first National Collection for the AMS was timed to coincide with Veterans Day November 2013 and raised more than $8.2 million from collections taken by 179 dioceses. While second collections are not allowed in U.S. military chapels, military personnel will have the opportunity to contribute independently by sending in individual donations in response to the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA Appeal.

What is the Mission of the AMS? The AMS worldwide mission is to provide for

the pastoral care of the 1.8 million Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, their family members, students at the Military Academies, patients in VA medical centers and US governmental personnel serving abroad. It is the only agency responsible for endorsing and granting faculties to Catholic chaplains and deacons in service to those populations.

Where is the AMS located? The headquarters' building is located in Washington, DC near the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and The Catholic University of America campus. The building houses the offices of the pastoral and administrative staff and serves as the residence for the AMS clergy. The AMS is the only US diocese without a cathedral, but celebrates its major functions at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

How does the AMS differ from a typical diocese in the USA? Are there other unique aspects of its mission? Unlike a typical diocese the AMS has no territorial borders. Its mission is worldwide and it supports the military members and their families wherever they are assigned or deployed. Also, there are no parishes which provide a weekly source of funds to support the Archdiocese. Solicitation of funds on military installations is severely limited by government mandate. Another unique requirement for the AMS is to maintain faithfully and provide Sacramental Records (baptisms, confirmations, marriages) for anybody receiving the sacraments at a military installation. The AMS stores over 2.5 million records and receives over 10,000 requests for copies of records each year.

As a military archdiocese, does it receive financial support from the military and the Catholic Church? The AMS is a church entity. It is not a part of the Armed Forces and is not funded by the federal government. It is a "home" mission diocese that depends almost entirely on financial support from individual donors including personal donations from its military and VA chaplains, gifts from military communities, gifts from dioceses, charitable bequests, and grants. The military chaplains are members of the Armed Forces and, as such, are paid by the government. The AMS must pay all the considerable travel costs for its clergy to visit military installations around the world. They do not travel on military aircraft. The AMS receives limited support from certain US dioceses and foundations that support Catholic causes.

Is my Donation to the AMS tax deductible? Yes, the AMS is a registered 501(c)(3) not for profit organization under the rules of the IRS, and all donations are fully tax deductible.

†If you are contributing to this endeavor, please use the specific envelopes attached to our

bulletin this week-end. PLEASE make your check payable to your parish. The Business Office

will write one check from each Parish for the total amount of all our generous contributions.

LAZARUS COLLECTION Is it PRIDE? Is it SELF-GLORIFICATION? SELF-ADMIRATION?

Hopefully not! I see this as one the many ways we give thanks to God for His

goodness to us. Also, this is who we are as practicing faithful stewardship of treasure.

No other church organization or individual group can do what our Cluster has accomplished

in the past!!! Once again, the Pulaski County Human services asked our Cluster to donate

Christmas hams for the less fortunate. The request is three hundred (300) hams!

The Business Office is working with Jay & Shawn at Sanders for the best price. We

will use the November and December Lazarus collection…money only. EVERYTHING

will be coordinated through our Business Office. Please make checks payable to St. Peter

(‘hams’ written in the memo line). Tag will be placed on the hams naming all three (3)

Quick one-liners for you:

◼REALM EXPLANATIONS! Several weeks ago there was an

announcement in the bulletin regarding Realm. All parishioners were encouraged to

sign up to be a member of Realm for their tax contribution sheets. Since the article

was printed, the Cluster office has received phone calls regarding the notice. Some

called to sign up and some called with concerns. To clarify any rumors that may be

circulating, TAX SHEETS WILL STILL BE GIVEN LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE

PAST YEARS, regardless if you are a member of Realm or not. In order to receive a

sheet, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR REALM. The Cluster Office will still

be preparing sheets and if you are not signed up for Realm and would like a sheet, we will be taking

requests in the beginning of 2020. If you still have questions or concerns, please call and speak with

Rachel. Thanks.

◼Our thoughts & sympathy are with the family of Wilfred (Will) Chevrette, age 82. Will passed

away on Monday, October 28th. His funeral liturgy was celebrated on Friday, November 1st in

Rensselaer. Please keep the Chevrette Family in your thoughts & prayers as they grieve their

loss.

◼The 2020 calendars have arrived and are available at the entrances to the Church. Thank you

to Jon & Dan Frain for providing our Catholic calendars to our Cluster!

◼St. Francis will host coffee and donuts on Sunday, November 3rd after the 8:00 A.M. Mass.

Please plan to join us for food and fellowship!!

◼UPCOMING ACTIVITIES!!!

1. Our High School RE Classes are organizing a Food Drive on Wednesday,

November 20th. Students will be using their class time on that evening to

walk door to door collecting food donations for the Pulaski County Food

Pantry. Anyone that would like to support them but do not live in town is

encouraged to bring food items to the Parish.

2. Our High School RE Classes will also be placing an Angel Toy Tree in each of our

Cluster Parishes beginning in the next couple of weeks. Tags will be

placed on all the trees indicating a child’s age and a type of toy donation

that the child is wishing for Christmas. The toys will be collected and

given to Human Services, then distributed to the needy families who

signed up. More details will follow up in our bulletin within the next

couple of weeks.
