Call to Worship Psalm 85One: Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet.

Righteousness and peace will embrace. All: Faithfulness will spring up from the ground and

righteousness will look down from the sky. One: The Lord will give what is good and our land will

yield its increase. All: Righteousness will go before and will make

a path for God’s steps. One: Prepare the way for the Lord!

Prayer of ConfessionGod of fierce compassion, you call us to make our ways straight, yet we get lost down crooked roads of selfish concern. We are to prepare the way for your reign of justice, but we choose easier paths of comfort.Have mercy on us. Forgive us and set us back to work, clearing paths of justice, building highways of peace, and preparing the world for your return.

Call to Worship One: The people who walked in darkness have seen

a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them has light shined.

All: Praise the Lord! Give thanks for the Light! Let us worship God.

Prayer of ConfessionHoly Lord, as we wait and watch and yearn and ache, we look for signs of your coming. You enter our world to bring your unconditional love. You call us to love you, to love our neighbors, to love

even our enemies. We confess that often love is not in our hearts and we lack courage to show love in our actions. We need your mercy; we long for the coming of your

Light. We wait, but we also pray, come quickly, Lord.

Call to Worship Isaiah 52One: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet

of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation!

All: Your sentinels lift up their voices; together they sing for joy as they see the return of the Lord to Zion!

One: Break forth into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord has comforted and redeemed Jerusalem.

All: And all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God!

Prayer of ConfessionO Heavenly Light, on this day the Word became flesh

and moved into our neighborhood. We rise to greet you, but do not offer hospitality to all

of your children. We are eager to sing praises to you, but slow to serve

you by serving others.Draw us into your abundant mercy, and grant us

your grace, that we might share your love with our neighborsand welcome the strangers in our midst.

Call to Worship Matt. 2:1-12One: The wise men came from far in the east to see this

child. All: We have come from east and west, north and

south to see again the Christ who has been born. One: They brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and

myrrh. All: We bring the gift of our very selves, offering our

lives to the one whose light shines in the darkness. One: They bowed down and worshiped him,

recognizing God in human flesh. All: We worship the Christ-child, giving thanks to

God for coming into our world. God is with us! Let us worship God!

Prayer of ConfessionMerciful God, we give thanks that you have come to us and that your light shines around us. We acknowledge that there is still darkness in us and

in our world. We confess that we have seen the light of your star and yet do not always follow where it leads. We want to offer our gifts to you and the world, but often we are reluctant to give. We confess that we have treasured that which is not

precious in your sight and turned away from your most gracious gift. Lead us again by your guiding light into the light and

love of Christ,in whose name we pray.

Lectionary ReadingsGenesis 1:1–5 Before creating light and darkness, the wind/breath/spirit of God moves over the waters of

Call to Worship Psalm 29One: The voice of the Lord calls out to us as we gather

this day. All: This is the voice of power; a voice that breaks

cedars and shakes the wilderness.One: This is a voice that flashes forth with flames of fire;

a voice that causes the oaks to whirl. All: This voice is the voice of our Lord who calls us to

worship in splendor and glory.

Prayer of ConfessionGenesis 1When you began to create, O God, you separated thelight from the darkness and called it good.We come to you this day, praying that you mightseparate the darkness in which we hide from thelight to which you call us. We want to be light, or at least we know deep inside that you want us to be light. Too often we live in darkness because it is easier even though we know it is not what you demand of us. Create us again. Start us over.Separate us from that which keeps us from livingas you intend. Hold us up to Christ the Light.

Call to WorshipIsaiah 40One: Come, all who are weary and are carrying heavy

burdens, for the Lord will give you rest. All: The Lord is our refuge and strength, a very

present help in times of trouble. One: Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their

strength,All: They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they

shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

One: God consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction.

All: For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our healing is abundant through Christ.

Prayer of ConfessionMerciful God, we come to you not because we have it

all together, but because we are not perfect. We want to be more like your Son, who lived his

whole life in love. Our love is most often reserved for those who are

close to us and those who love us in return. Our forgiveness is most often conditional. Fairness is more important to us than grace. We cannot live up to the way Jesus leads us. Forgive us, and make us more like Christin all we say and do.

Call to WorshipOne: Thanks be to God for this new day! All: Thanks be to God for the creation that surrounds

us, for the gift of God’s presence as we worship, for strength to live boldly for the Lord. Thanks be to God for this new day!

Prayer of Confession Psalm 30Our words are feeble as we come to you in prayer. Even though you are faithful to us, we too often

forget you. You have lifted us up when we have fallen into

despair. You have turned our tears into laughter and joy. You have protected us when we have been in danger. You will never move. Yet we move away from you. We turn away from your presence to seek the fleeting

affirmation of others. We forget your name to clamor after prosperity at

all costs. Turn us around again, that we might see your face, and receive your mercy.
