Epiphany of the Lord | January 5, 20203
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK | Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.
January 4-5
his weekend, we celebrate The Solemnity of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus
Christ. After the Sunday 6:00 p.m. Mass next weekend, we will invite our parishioners to take home a poinsettia plant. On Monday we will begin to take down all the Christmas decorations. Anyone who wants to help, please come after the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Monday. Maintenance will be happy to have you help them.
This Solemnity of the Epiphany is one of the oldest Christian feasts, though, throughout the centuries, it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany comes from a Greek verb meaning "to reveal," and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man.
New Priest Arriving Next MonthFr. Kenneth Letoile, O.P., the Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph, has named Fr. Ignatius Schweitzer, O.P. as a Parochial Vicar for St. Gertrude Church. Fr. Ignatius was ordained in 2011. Fr. Ignatius will be arriving here in early January of 2020. Fr. Ignatius will be replacing Fr. Henry Stephan, O.P. who will be leaving us in June of 2020 to pursue DoctoralStudies.Forsixmonths,wewillbeblessedwithfourfriarsonstaff:Fr. André-Joseph, Pastor and Prior, and three Parochial Vicars, Frs. Clement, Henry, and Ignatius. We look forward to his presence with us. Please warmly welcome him when he arrives.
Like many of the most ancient Christian feasts, Epiphanywas first celebrated in theEast.Today, amongboth Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, the feast is known as Theophany – the revelation of God to man.
Epiphany originally celebrated four different events,in the following order of importance: the Baptism of the Lord; Christ's firstmiracle of the changing of water intowine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to man: At Christ's Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God the Father is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ's divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ's divinity is revealed to the Gentiles – the other nations of the earth.
Eventually, the celebration of the Nativity was separated out, in the West, into Christmas; and shortly thereafter, Epiphany, still later celebrating the Baptism of the Lord which marks the end of the Christmas Season.
Next weekend after the 6:00 p.m. Sunday Mass, we will invite parishioners to take home the poinsettia plants in the sanctuary. Any leftover plants can be taken on Monday. Christmas decorations will be taken down on January 13th.
A blessed Christmas Week to all,
Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P., Pastor/Prior

HOLY TEACHING
January 5:Salvation made known to the whole worldSt. Leo the Great, Sermons
The loving providence of God determined that in the last days He would aid the world, set on its course to destruction. He decreed that all nations should be saved in Christ.
A promise had been made to the holy patriarch Abraham in regard to these nations. He was to have a countless progeny, born not from his body but from the seed of faith. His descendants are therefore compared with the array of the stars. The father of all nations was to hope not in an earthly progeny but in a progeny from above.
Let the full number of the nations now take their place in the family of the patriarchs. Let the children of the promise now receive the blessing in the seed of Abraham, the blessing renounced by thechildrenofhisflesh.InthepersonsoftheMagilet all people adore the Creator of the universe; let God be known, not in Judea only, but in the whole world, so that His name may be great in all Israel.
Dear friends, now that we have received instruction in this revelation of God’s grace, let us celebrate with spiritual joy the dayofourfirstharvesting, ofthefirstcallingoftheGentiles.LetusgivethankstothemercifulGod,whohasmadeusworthy,in the words of the Apostle, to share the position of the saints in light; who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. As Isaiah prophesied: The people of the Gentiles, who sat in darkness, have seen a great light, and for those who dwelt in the region of the shadow of death a light has dawned. He spoke of them to the Lord: The Gentiles, who do not know You, will invoke You, and the peoples, who knew You not, will take refuge in You.
This is the day that Abraham saw, and rejoiced to see, when he knew that the sons born of his faith would be blessed in his seed, that is, in Christ. Believing that he would be the father of the nations, he looked into the future, giving glory to God, in full awareness that God is able to do what He has promised.
This is the day that David prophesied in the psalms, when he said: All the nations that you have brought into being will come and fall down in adoration in your presence, Lord, and glorify your name. Again, the Lord has made known His salvation; in the sight of the nations He has revealed His justice.
Thiscametobefulfilled, asweknow, fromthetimewhenthestarbeckonedthethreewisemenoutoftheirdistantcountryand led them to recognize and adore the King of heaven and earth. The obedience of the star calls us to imitate its humble service;tobeservants, asbestwecan, ofthegracethatinvitesallmentofindChrist.
Dear friends, you must have the same zeal to be of help to one another; then, in the kingdom of God, to which faith and good works are the way, you will shine as children of the light: through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with God the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
