I want to share the following letter with you:

“Dear Monsignor, Father, and Pastoral Director, Thank you for your faithful ministry to the people in the Diocese of Grand Rapids. Because of your ministry and the prayers of the people, the Catholic Church in West Michi-gan is making steady progress. We have seen three straight years of enrollment growth in our Catholic schools. At Easter, we welcomed nearly 400 candidates and cate-chumens into the Church. We will soon be launching a pas-toral plan for our growing Hispanic ministry. The permanent diaconate program was reintroduced and we have 16 aspir-ants in formation. One of our greatest blessings has been witnessed over the past six years as our number of semi-narians has grown from 18 to 24, with a total enrollment of 34 expected this fall. With great blessings, come financial challenges. One of my greatest challenges as bishop is determining how to fund and sustain these worthwhile initiatives. For example, the cost to educate seminarians has increased from $508,000 six years ago to $1,831,000 for the upcoming fiscal year. While the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) par-tially funds seminarian education, most of the funding has come from our reserve accounts. While funding seminarian education is an important endeavor, I am also aware of your priestly service. There-fore, I am proposing a diocesan-wide capital campaign to more fully fund our priest pension fund, endow a fund to support seminarian and clergy education and formation, and restore the reserve accounts we have being using to fund seminarian education. I have made this decision fol-lowing consultations with my leadership team and the Presbyteral Council. The Steier Group of Omaha, Nebraska has been cho-sen to lead this effort in conjunction with members of our diocesan staff. Our first step will be to conduct a compre-hensive campaign planning study, which will occur this summer. The results of the study will provide me with vital feedback regarding the proposed goals and structure of the campaign. In June, I will send you a preliminary fact sheet that outlines the potential goals for the effort. I will be asking all of you to participate in a confidential one-on-one interview to share your thoughts, concerns, and sugges-tions regarding the potential goals and structure of the campaign. In the meantime, I am asking for your assis-tance with the following:

Please recommend 25 families from your parish that you believe could help shape the goals of the capital campaign.

I thank you in advance for your support and par-ticipation. You are my closest collaborators in ministry. Your guidance and leadership are important to me and essential in planning for the future of our diocese.

Fraternally yours in Christ, Most Rev. David J. Walkowiak

Bishop of Grand Rapids”

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ONE OF THE 25 FAMILIES I RECOMMEND PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANK YOU.

Thank you very much for your gener-ous donations to the fish fry dessert table. Diners of all ages commented that it was hard choosing between the variety of delicious cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and pies, etc.. Once again, Blessed Sacrament Parish has lived up to its reputation for having the best bakers! Thanks again, Marie LeMire.
