INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY

We are to take up our cross and follow Jesus each day. Jesus taught throughout his life that to live as his disciples, we must take up our cross each

day and follow him. Doing so requires that we love him above all other people and things in our lives. It also requires a willingness to let go of anything that may hinder us in growing in our love for the Lord. The first reading encourages us to keep our minds on God, not on worldly concerns. In the second reading, Paul sends Onesimus back to his owner Philemon, with the hope that Philemon will take him back not as a slave but as a brother. Today’s Gospel reminds us that faithful discipleship requires taking up our cross each day and following Jesus.

If anyone comes after me, Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel, without hating his father and mother, wife and children,

brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Is that good news? Can Jesus really be serious? In

this passage hating, for Jesus, meant simply detaching oneself from someone or something. What he was really saying

is that the Father must come first. That is how Jesus himself lived. Love for the Lord does not exclude other loves. But

it puts them in the right order. God is not jealous. How could the One who is love, and who in creating us in his image

has given us the ability to love, be jealous of what he has made? Jesus asks everything of us because he has given us

everything. If you want to be my disciple, Jesus says, count the cost. First reflect. Then act. So let’s reflect. If following

Jesus Christ really means putting him first – ahead of money, possessions, success, those we love – which of us could

say with confidence that we had the necessary self-denial and staying power?

ALTAR SERVERS PRACTICE Friday, September 16, 2016 - 03.30 PM

We have a great team of altar servers who serve regularly with energy and enthusiasm. It is important we rehearse from time to time, and learn more about the meaning behind how we serve at the altar; it’s important that we work together as a team, helping each other, understanding each other and learning from each other. This is why from time to time we meet to learn and to share.

MOTHER TERESA (1910 – 1997) WILL BE CANONIZED ON SEPTEMBER 04, 2016 BY POPE FRANCIS

The remarkable woman who would be known as Mother Theresa began life named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, she was the youngest child born to Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, Receiving her First Communion at the age of five, she was confirmed in November 1916. Mother Teresa often said, “Holiness is not the luxury of the few, it is a simple duty for each one of us”. May her example help us to strive for holiness: to love God, to respect and love every human person created by God in His own image and in whom He dwells, and to care for our poor and suffering brethren. May all the sick, the suffering, and those who seek God's help find a friend and intercessor in Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003. She will be canonized on September 4, 2016 by Pope Francis.

CONSIDER SHARING YOUR TIME AND TALENTS IN PARISH MINISTRY

“Volunteering is an opportunity to connect with your community to create a positive impact.” (Volunteer Alberta)

In the Church, every baptized person is called to holiness and ministry. Volunteering in parish ministries is a part of Christian discipleship. Whether it's in the secular or faith community, volunteers are invaluable to building society. For the Christian, it's also an opportunity to be a good steward of God-given gifts. If you are thinking about how you can participate in this call, please call the parish office at 403-845-3457 or contact Parish Volunteer Coordinator Ernie Murias at 403-845-4860 to learn more. Thank you for answering God’s call to serve.
