1 Corinthians 9:2-12 (Epistle)

If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. My defense to those who examine me is this: Do we have no right to eat and drink? Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working? Who ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock? Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about? Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ.

Matthew 18:23-35 (Gospel)

Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.

The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. ’Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’

And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.

So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.

North American Thebaid Photographic Pil-grimage Project begins 2-year expedition to photograph monasteries across USA and

Canada

After over a year and a half of development and plan-ning, a unique creative endeavor is set to begin actual travel and photography with the Great Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos on September 8, 2016.

Director and photographer Ralph (Zosimas) Sidway reports that his plan for the Thebaid Project is to travel to Orthodox Christian monasteries across the USA and Canada over the next two years, creating fine art photo-graphs of these holy places highlighting the worship, work, and life of the monks and nuns of the new “The-baid” which is taking root here in North America. The plan calls for the finest of these images to be published in a coffee table book in late 2018.

The first two monasteries on the itinerary are Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery, South Canaan, PA, and the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration, Ell-wood City, PA. Scheduling is underway for October and November.

The Thebaid Project has a pan-Orthodox scope and seeks to include monastic communities from various Orthodox jurisdictions. Mr. Sidway is well qualified to bring this project to fruition, with 40 years in profes-sional and fine art photography, experience in web and print publishing, and faithful service to the Orthodox Church. In between his stays at monasteries, Mr. Sidway plans to present the “work in progress” at Orthodox parishes and schools, hoping to plant seeds for future monastic vocations and helping expand the mission of the Ortho-dox Church in North America.

Mr. Sidway is a long-time member of Christ the Savior-Holy Spirit Church, Cincinnati, OH, where he has served as parish web servant since 2004. He has been developing this project since early 2015, and has the blessing of his parish rector, Archpriest Steven Kostoff. The North American Thebaid Project is a registered Non-Profit Organization with several volunteer mem-bers, 501(c)(3) status pending, established with the Blessing of His Grace, Bishop Paul of Chicago and the Midwest of the Orthodox Church in America.

Visit the Thebaid Project web site for more informa-tion.

Sitka cathedral among Alaska’s top ten “most en-dangered historic properties”

Historic Saint Michael the Archangel Cathedral here is one of two Diocese of Alaska churches on this year’s “Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties” list compiled by the Alaska Association for Historic Preservation [AAHP].

Also on this year’s list is the Ascension of Our Lord Church, Karluk, AK, which was built in 1888. Located on the far side of Kodiak Island, the Karluk church is considered the state’s oldest extant Orthodox sanctuary.

Saint Michael Cathedral was constructed between 1844 and 1848. Saint Innocent Veniaminov designed the structure and built the clock that graces its bell tower. He hired skilled Finnish carpenters to build the cathedral, which was made of spruce logs and ceilings with sailcloth-lined walls for insula-tion and improved acoustics. The cathedral was the principal physical representation of the Russian cultural influence in the 19th century in North America. From 1840 to 1872, Sitka was the See of the Diocese that governed all of North America, and thereafter it continued as the See of the Diocese of Alaska. The present cathedral is a faithful reconstruction of the original building which burned to the ground on January 2, 1966. Fortunately, over 95% of the original icons, pieces of Ortho-dox liturgical art and religious objects—including the Sitka Icon of the Mother of God—survived the blaze.

“Even though the cathedral was rebuilt after the fire in 1966, it is once again being threatened by issues related to water damage that continues to plague the building,” said His Grace, Bishop David of Sitka and Alaska. “Efforts are underway by several organizations in Alaska to put together recent studies by engineers to obtain a good overall picture of what is wrong and what is needed to repair the structure.”

The AAHP has compiled this annual list since 1991. It is intended to bring public awareness to Alaska’s threatened historic properties. Heightened awareness often leads to in-creased support for the conservation of endangered historic properties, which are assets important to religious life, tour-ism, economic development and Alaska’s cultural heritage. The nominations for this program are submitted by individuals and organizations throughout Alaska.

The list is the first step to participate in the AAHP’s “Ten Most Endangered Grant Program,” which funds hands-on preservation work on endangered properties and serves as seed money to leverage funding from other sources. Properties listed on the 2016 list will be eligible to apply to AAHP for these matching grants, which are made possible through gen-erous donations to the Grant Program from private individuals and organizations which support these preservation efforts.
