LITTLETON -- Superintendent Kelly Clenchy, Shaker Lane Elementary Principal Michelle Kane and Russell Street Interim Principal Cheryl Temple are pleased to announce that students from both schools will be participating in a virtual art show this month.

Until the end of the summer, students from kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to showcase their artwork and see what their peers have created on the website for the virtual art show. Students spent the last eight weeks putting together their projects during the remote learning period, and were challenged to use items they had available inside or outside of their homes.

“We are so proud of the creativity and effort our artists have demonstrated both in the classroom and throughout remote learning,” said art teacher and Interim Assistant Principal Andrea Romano. “Students created such amazing projects using the resources they had on hand, the help of their family and their own imagination and creativity.”

Projects included fizzy chalk art; geometric and organized shapes based on the style of French artist Henri Matisse; tiny art galleries; animals made out of natural materials; recreations of other famous works of art; and abstract art inspired by French artist Piet Mondrian.

Using the vocabulary they learned in class, students were able to present their artwork and provide feedback on their classmates’ projects. Students will be able to participate in a virtual scavenger hunt as well, an event they usually do each year when the event is held at the elementary schools.

“This was an incredible collaboration between students, their families and our amazing art teachers,” said Superintendent Clenchy. “While we unfortunately won’t be able to showcase students’ projects in the ways we normally do, I applaud the work everyone did to adapt this event so that it could still be held while students are learning remotely.”
