WELCOME
On behalf of the Yarra Ranges Athletics committee we welcome back all our returning
athletes and extend a warm welcome to all our new members to this 2013-2014 season.
Please make them welcome and show them the Yarra Ranges Athletics spirit that makes
us one of the best and friendliest clubs in Little Athletics and senior athletics.
Over the past few years our club has undergone a lot of changes, a brand new all weather
track, facilities upgrade, new clubrooms and the formation of a senior club.
All this would not be possible without the efforts, personal sacrifice, time and visionary
thinking of many members and past members of this club.
We can now offer an allweather track, excellent facilities, and a great team of coaches
covering nearly all events, all this available to junior and senior athletes.
This season is our second full year of senior Athletics, after a great first year we are all
set to grow and aim to hold some meetings at our facilities in the near future.
Parents, remember we need your help to run our events – it takes 86 parents to run a
competition day. Please offer your assistance to help setup, pack up and assist the age
group managers in running events. Should you wish to be more involved or have any
questions please contact the committee.
We are also part of the Inclusion program, and welcome athletes from different cultural
backgrounds and athletes with various skills and ability levels.
Please take time to read this handbook, inside it contains a calendar of events, committee
contacts, rules and regulations, records and results.
To all athletes, try your best, make new friends and most importantly – have FUN.

Lilydale and Yarra Ranges Little Athletics Centre 43
Presidents Report 2012-2013
Such an eventful year.
A new Name.
A new Constitution.
A new Track.
A new Club format with the introduction of Seniors and Affiliation with both LAVic and Athletics Victoria.
In September we were finally able to access our wonderful new athletics facility and we did it with a bang.
Our Opening day was well attended by athletes and their families as well as local dignitaries and was
brought together by the fantastic efforts of Brendan, Laura, Jamie, Dom and Sophie.
Next season we will also have the benefit of a new pavilion and further works around the venue.
This upgrade to the facility is due in no small part to the tireless work and dedication of Brendan Dixon. He
has continued to lobby for the money to build this great facility. I have seen him refuse to give in at the
many meetings and briefings we have attended over recent years. Brendan continues to seek more funding
so we can continue to develop the Yarra Ranges Regional Athletics Facility at Morrison Reserve for
athletes of all ages and abilities.
Our season started in October and other than a few minor changes to the program to allow for a new venue
layout the weekly competitions went well. We did not have to cancel any days due to bad weather. We only
needed to make slight adjustments to the program.
Numbers were well up on past years and attendance at training has been impressive. It is really great to
have lights so that training does not have to end so early.
During this summer season as a club we were involved in two fun fundraising days for outside organisa-
tions.
The first of these was PINKLETICS in November which was a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation.
Everyone got into the spirit and came decked out in PINK. Prizes to the best dressed and winners of the
raffle.
The second event was RELAYATHON in February.
This day raises funds for the Royal Childrens Hospital (LAVic's nominated charity)
Relayathon was revived by LAVic this year after a break of many years
Our centre kept the baton going around in lane 1 for three hours.
All age groups were scheduled to participate.
Final distance was 122 Laps or 48.8km.
A great effort on both of these special days by everybody
We also started competing in the senior competition held by Athletics Victoria. Although small in
comparison to other very well established clubs, our athletes certainly left their mark on the competition.
Very pleasing was the selection of 5 of our athletes into Victorian Teams for National Championships (you
can read all about that in the seniors report).Well done Lucas, Jack, Riley, Aiden and Molly.
We also had 3 junior athletes selected in the Victorian Primary Schools Team to compete at the National
Championships in Adelaide. Well done Georgia, Nathan and Lateisha.
Once again our centre has had representatives at all State Championship events.
In December we went to Lakeside for Relays and Multi Event.
Top results were:
Relays – U15 Boys Medley Gold, U14 Girls Medley Silver, U11 Boys Medley 4th.
Multi Event - Georgia Laven Silver, Stephanie Durant 7th
, Harrison Van Duuren 8th.
In March we headed to Bendigo for the Track and Field Championships. Once again our athletes performed
very well with medals to:
Ryan Patterson – 400m Gold, 800m Gold, 1500m Gold, including a VBP
Georgia Laven – 400m Gold, 800m Gold, including a VBP
Brayden Woolridge – Shot Put Gold, Discus Gold
Lily Peacock – 800m Bronze
Molly Dixon – Javelin Bronze
Aiden Pace – 400m Bronze
Into the winter season as a centre we again tasted success at both the Road Relay and Cross Country
Championships.
The Road Relays were held in May at Sandown Race Course. Our U11 Girls took home Gold and Our U13
17
Boys won Silver.
State Cross Country was on in July and was again run at Lardner Park near Drouin.
Top Individual Results were:
Ryan Patterson Gold, Georgia Laven Gold, Madeline Laven 4th
, James Laven 6th
, Zachariah Clarke 8th
,
Amy Veenendaal 10th
, Tess Patterson 10th
,
Team Medals went to U9 Girls Silver and U12 Girls Bronze.
The Junior Development Squad (JDS) is run by LAVic for athletes in the U12 -U16 groups who meet the
qualifying standards. This year we were represented by Molly, Lateisha, James, Lee and Emily. We had
athletes at every session as well as attend the live in summer camp. Check your results against the
qualifying standards available on the LAVic website to see if you can join this training squad. Our Coaches
Brendan and Julianne were also part of JDS.
For those who don't qualify for the JDS, there is still the opportunity for further training at the EMR
coaching camp held every year at Crystal Creek near Alexandra. Many of our athletes attend this every
year and always report back on how much fun they have had.
Our centre was also represented at most of the clinics held throughout the season by LAVic. These clinics
for the athletes and courses for the parents are a great way to make new friends as you learn a few more
skills. Keep your eyes open for more in the new season.
A sports club does not run without the work of many volunteers. Firstly there are those on the committee
who do all of the behind the scenes administrative work so that competition can be held each week –
thanks to Brendan, Shannyn, Darren, Jamie, Dave, Rob, Jackie, Andrew, Grant, Dom, Laura, Deb, Sophie,
Geoff, Graeme, Veronica, Jake, Tim.
We also have those parents who help every week around the venue. Thank you, without your help raking,
measuring and recording our kids would not have a sporting event to attend.
At presentation night we thanked those family members who have put in a huge amount of work over a
number of seasons by awarding them a Distinguished Service Award – Congratulations and Thanks to
Clyde Day, Jackie deHaan, Andrew Duncan, Kimm Noonan, Grant Salomon, Paige Sytema, Rob
VanDuuren and Graeme Woolridge.
Finally, each season we farewell our graduating athletes. We hope that now we have senior teams
competing we will still see them around the club.
Farewell from Little Athletics to -
Indiana Beck, Stephanie Bollaart, Charlotte Bystersky, Hayley Coleman, Jordan Gallucci, Aiden Pace,
Ryan Patterson, Ayelen Snow Aguilera, Ellie Trezise, Ella VanDeVelde and Charles Warren.
I look forward to seeing you all around the club next season.

Photography Policy Registered Yarra Ranges Athletes and their families and athletes who register to compete at Yarra Ranges
Athletics events and competitions (and their families) are automatically covered by this policy when
competing at Yarra Ranges Athletics events (including training). The submission of athlete
registration forms includes the athlete(s) and their families acceptance that they may be recorded and/or
photographed in accordance with this policy, specifically for “legitimate interest”. As such permission
from registered athletes and their families to be photographed (whether intentionallyor not) is not required
or sought.
If athletes or families ( or specific family members) do not want to be recorded or photographed whilst
attending Yarra Ranges Athletics events or competitions, an adult member of the family ( or carer) must
notify event officials ( either when registering or prior to the start of a competition) and provide details as
to what athletes/families are not to be recorded/photographed . A brief summary of the reason(s) for not
wanting to be recorded/photographed is required for Centre records and to ensure officials and
photographers take that into account during the actual competition.
Athletes who are not to be recorded/photographed will be identified by the addition of a label on their
competition patch / apparel. This label is to be displayed at all times and events that they are not to be
recorded/photographed in.
Due to the nature of athletics events Yarra Ranges athletics will take steps to prevent the athlete, person
from being photographed , but cannot guarantee and will not be responsible should the athlete / person be
captured on a photograph.

COMPETITION REGULATIONS
The Competition Regulations for the conduct of all Little Athletics Victoria Championships (August 1998)
will be used as a guide for the Centre competition. The instructions to Officials, printed in this Handbook,
will be adhered to where practical for normal competition and will be enforced during Centre
Championships. Any variations made will be due to the age and skill level of the children, time restraints
or lack of Officials.
GENERAL RULES
1. Yarra Ranges Athletics accepts registrations from boys and girls in the age groups of under 6 to
under 16. Ages as at 1st October determine the child’s applicable age group. For example, if you
are 8 on the 1st October you compete in the under 9’s. Children attaining the age of 5 during the
season may register after their 5th birthday.
2. All athletes must be registered with the Centre.
3. Children must wear the approved Club uniform with the current LAV age Registration Patch
attached to the front.
4. Suitable footwear must be worn for all events.
5. Under 12 to under 16 athletes may wear spikes in laned track events and jumps. Spikes should
only be worn during an event.
6. Crouch starts must be used by all athletes from Under 12 upwards in all events up to and
including the 400m, except where it’s physically or medically impossible.
7. Only Officials and competitors are permitted within the arena. The track must be crossed at
designated areas only.
8. All parents, official and athletes are to abide by the LAVic Codes of Behaviour.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OFFICIALS
The following pages outline a general set of rules and instructions for Officials at each event.
These are not a full set of Rules & Regulations, and are subject to change without notice.
(A full set of Rules & Regulations are available on the Australian Athletics web site
www.littleathletics.com.au)
It is very useful for all parents and athletes to read the following guidelines
They are in an easy to read format and will help you enormously in the understanding of athletics
A clearer understanding of the rules, in any sport or discipline, generally leads to greater enjoyment.
Remember if you don’t understand something ask one of our Coaches or Chief Officials.
TIMEKEEPER FUNCTION
To measure the elapsed time between the start and finish of an event.
DEFINITIONS
Start: The first sign of smoke from the Starter’s gun, or visual signal. Finish: When any part of the runner’s torso crosses the plane of the finish line.
Torso: That part of the body between armpits to hips, not including the head, neck, arms and legs.
PREPARATION
Get a watch and have a few practices starting, stopping and resetting it. Clarify which race and what place
you will be timing - and be alert.
POINTS TO WATCH
1. Hold the watch between the thumb and forefinger with forefinger on the button.
2. The watch must always be held still. You should eliminate all waste motion.
3. With about 30 metres of the race still to run note the athlete you are timing and prepare to stop the
watch. Do not anticipate the finish.
4. Always look at your watch prior to starting.
5. Remember to reset watch to zero should a false start occur.
6. Never reset your watch prior to agreement being reached with either the Chief Timekeeper or with
other Timekeepers.
RUNNING WATCH
When timing distance or race walking events it is not necessary or practical to time each runner with an
individual watch but it is required that 2 - 3 Timekeepers be used for recording of first place. One
timekeeper may use two watches (when 3 watches are being used) and as the winner finishes, one watch is
stopped for an accurate measurement of first place. The second watch is kept running and as each other
runner crosses the line; times are called by the Timekeeper and recorded by a person standing with the
Timekeeper. If 3 watches are on first place, the middle time is accepted as the correct time. If 2 watches
are used, the slower time is accepted.
PRINTOUT STOPWATCH
Where a printout stopwatch is used it is required to have two standard type stopwatches recording first
place in case of a record.
DUTIES OF A CHIEF TIMEKEEPER
Ensure that Timekeepers are placed in such a position that they:
1. Know what place they are to time
2. Are in line with the finish line;
3. Have a good view of all lanes; and
4. Have a clear view of the starter.
The above can be achieved by the use of an elevated stand at least 5 metres from the track.
Place Judges are responsible for deciding places in a race - not Timekeepers.

LONG JUMP
EQUIPMENT
1. Take off mat or sand U6 - U8 Size : 1.22m x 1.00m U9 - U11 Size : 1.22m x 0.50m
2. Take of board or mat U12 - U16 Size : 1.22m x 0.20m
3. Measuring Tape (20 metres)
4. Rake, broom, shovel, hand brush and spike
5. Place tickets and recording sheet
6. Chalk or indicator markers and Measuring Tape for run-up.
PREPARATION FOR EVENT
1. Ensure sand pit is level with run-up.
2. Sand may need to be dampened if it is dry.
3. Indicator markers shall be distributed to all competitors to mark run-ups.
Sweep run ups and take off area.
3. The front edge of the take-off mat should not be less than
U6 - U11 50cm from the front edge of the pit.
U12-U16 100cm from the front edge of the pit.
BASIC RULES
1. Each athlete is allowed a maximum of 3 trials
2. To be a valid jump the athlete:
(a) Must take-off from one foot
(b) Must place take-off foot on or behind the board/mat. If any part of foot is over the front
edge of board/mat then it is a no jump.
3. No markers may be placed on runway but may be placed alongside runway.
4. No markers in landing area of sand pit.
5. If in running up to take-off an athlete passes the edge of the mat furthest from landing pit, it shall
be called a trial even if the jump is not complete.
6. The run-up may not exceed 40 metres.
7. If after completing the jump an athlete walks back through the landing area towards the jump area
it is a “no jump”.
8. In the course of landing an athlete must not touch the ground outside the landing area nearer to the
take-off point than the nearest break (imprint) in the landing area.
9.
MEASURING THE JUMP
1. Official selects break (imprint) made in sand by foot, hand, etc, which is closest to imprint made
in take-off mat by take-off foot. This point in the pit is marked by spike, the zero end of tape is
held at the spike.
2. The tape is straightened so it lies over and in contact with imprint made by take-off foot on the
take-off mat. The tape is drawn tight and the distance is measured to the nearest cm below
distance jumped. The athlete can baulk at the jump before reaching take off mat.
For U12 - 16 athletes using a take-off board/mat the measurement must be perpendicular to the
take-off line or its extension (i.e. straight back from the imprint in the sand). For U12 – 16 athletes
measurement is taken from the front of the board irrespective of where the athlete jumps from.
3. The competitor who has the longest measured distance from all jumps recorded is the winner. In
the event of a tie then a decision is made on the next best jump recorded. 4. If the athlete takes off before the take-off mat or board, then the jump shall be measured from the
imprint in the sand to the centre back edge of the take-off mat or the front edge of the take-off
board.
OFFICIALS REQUIRED
1. Two Officials at the take-off area to watch for foul jumps and recording measurements.
2. Two Officials at side of pit to measure the jump, rake & leveling sand in pit.
3. One Official for recording the jump.
RECORDING
The best performance for each competitor should be circled or highlighted to simplify placings. The winner
is decided by the longest jump. If a tie occurs then their 2nd best jump is taken into consideration.
23
TRIPLE JUMP
EQUIPMENT
1. Take off mat or sand U8 Size : 1.22m x 1.00m U9 - U11 Size : 1.22m x 0.50m

take-off mat or board.
(b) After completing a jump the athlete walks back through the pit.
(c) In course of landing the athlete touches the ground outside the landing area nearer to the take-off
point than the nearest break in the landing area made by the jump.
N.B. The trailing leg may make contact with the runway during the jump. 4. No markers may be placed on runway but may be placed alongside runway.
5. No markers in landing area of sand pit.
6. If in running up to take-off an athlete passes the edge of the mat furthest from landing pit, it shall
be called a trial even if the jump is not complete.
7. The run-up may not exceed 40 metres.
8. In the event an athlete should land in the pit on their step they should be allowed another trial
after the position of the take-off mat is altered.

HIGH JUMP
EQUIPMENT
1. 2 x High jump stands
2. Cross bar (circular in cross section)
3. Measuring stick or tape
4. Landing bags (minimum of 60cm thick)
BEFORE COMPETITION
1. The Chief judge shall ensure that all aspects of the landing area and run up are safe.
2. Ensure that the platforms supporting the cross bar are facing the opposite upright.
3. Allow competitors a practice jump(s) to check their run up
4. Set the bar at the correct starting height, measurement shall be checked with the measuring stick
perpendicular to the ground of the lowest point of the cross bar and the top of the bar, that is,
“middle of bar”. Measure outer edges higher so middle of bar is the correct height.
5. Check that there is a clearance of at least 10cm between the uprights and the main landing mat and
landing bags to avoid displacement of the crossbar.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. The bar should be raised in 5cm increments until there are 6 competitors or less, then in
increments of 2cm.
2. The final competitor may continue to jump, at height increments agreed upon by Chief Official
3. An athlete may commence jumping at any height above the starting height. 3 consecutive failures
regardless of the height disqualify the athlete.
4. An athlete may pass on their second or third trial at a particular height (after failing first or second
time) and still jump at a subsequent height.
5. Passing a height is allowable, but three successive failures regardless of height disqualify the
athlete.
6. An athlete may approach the bar from any angle.
7. Diving over the bar is not recommended. Taking off on two feet is not recommended.
8. If the bar falls after an athlete has landed and left the mat it MAY be considered a failure. It is the
decision of the judge if the bar fell because it was touched by the athlete. 9. If an athlete touches the ground or equipment beyond the plane of the uprights and fails to
complete a successful jump, it is considered a failure. At the discretion of the Chief Official, an
athlete has 60 seconds to complete a jump. If an athlete does not complete a jump in the
prescribed time frame, it shall be considered a failure. An athlete may have an unlimited number
of baulks in the prescribed time frame.
RECORDING
1. A tick indicates the bar has been cleared
2. X indicates a failure 3. - indicates did not jump or a pass
DETERMINING THE RESULTS
1. The athlete who jumps the greatest height is the winner.
2. If there is a tie:-
(a) The athlete with the lowest number of jumps at the height at which the tie occurs shall be
awarded the higher place. (b) If the tie still remains, the athlete with the lowest total of failures throughout the
competition up to and including the height last cleared shall be awarded the higher place.
If the tie still remains :-
(a) If it concerns first place, the competitors tying shall have one more jump at the height at
which they failed, and if no decision is reached the bar shall be lowered or raised to the
heights which shall be announced by the Chief Official of the event; they shall then
attempt one jump at each height until the tie is decided
(b) If the tie concerns any other place the competitors shall be awarded equal place in the
competition.
OFFICIALS REQUIRED
1. Two officials to return the cross bar to the uprights
2. One official to judge the jump
3. One official to record
25
SAFETY
The uprights may be moved during the competition only if the Chief Official in consultation with the
Arena Manager/Referee considers that the take-off or landing ground has become unsuitable or dangerous.
The uprights may then be moved to finish off the round. The landing area should be maintained in a safe
condition. If a number of small bags are used then it should be ensured that there are no gaps.

JAVELIN
A Javelin is a form of spear and as such is a lethal weapon, which can be deflected by gusts of wind.
Officials in the field must watch carefully because as the Javelin comes toward them it may appear to
be a smaller object than it is.
IMPLEMENT WEIGHTS
400G U/11 - U/12 Boys
U/11 - U/14 Girls
500G U15 – U16 Girls
600G U/13 - U/15 Boys
700G U16 Boys
INSTRUCTIONS
Each athlete is entitled to three trials.
To be a valid throw:
1. The Javelin must be held at the grip. It should be thrown over the shoulder or upper part of the
throwing arm, and must never be slung or hurled. Non-orthodox styles are not permitted.
2. At no time during the throw, until the Javelin has been discharged into the air, may the competitor
turn completely around, so that their back is toward the throwing arc.
3. For a valid throw the tip of the Javelin must fall within the inner edges of the landing sector.
4. A throw shall be valid only if the tip of the metal head strikes the ground before any other part of
the Javelin. The Javelin does not have to stick in, but marking is easier if it does. When a Javelin
descends at a very low angle with the ground it may bounce shortly before producing what looked
likely to be a fair landing. This must be carefully watched to see if the point impacts first. 5. The competitor must not leave the runway until the implement has touched the ground. When
leaving the runway the first contact with the parallel lines or the ground outside the runway must
be completely behind the white lines of the arc at right angles to the parallel lines.
6. The athlete may, during the course of each trial, stop and place the Javelin down inside or outside
the runway, leave the runway, then return to begin a fresh trial, providing that occurs only once in
any one trial and that no other infringement has occurred.
METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
1. The measurement of each throw shall be made from where the tip of the metal head first strikes
the ground to the inside edge of the arc along a line from the point of landing to the centre of the
circle of which the arc is part.
2. The tape must be straightened and pulled tight.
3. The distance is measured at the point where the tape crosses the inner edge of the arc.
4. Each measurement is to the nearest whole cm below the distance thrown unless the reading is a
whole cm.
SAFETY
Everyone should stand behind the thrower and the sector should be clear. The Javelin should be carried
back, never thrown.

ON TRACK
On Track is a program formulated for U/6 and U/7 to assist in the development of skills and co-ordination.
Our Centre aims to provide a very caring, friendly environment in which children can participate in
athletics. We hope they enjoy their involvement, make new friends and improve their skills so that they
may develop a life long love of sport through participation in Little Athletics.
This season we are continuing to combine normal competition with our On Track program. Little Athletics
Victoria has designed the On Track program to provide all children with increased instruction, practice
opportunities and motivation. Children will be placed in groups and participate in a range of skills working
through a sequential program designed to encourage participation and move through various stages
appropriate for their ability level.
We are asking parents to ensure children are prepared for the season by providing hats and drink bottles
and making sure their children come in appropriate dress. We look forward to seeing you at the Centre
each week and we invite you to participate in the sessions in support of your child.
ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS
Children competing at Little Athletics are encouraged to compete in ALL events.
Yarra Ranges Athletics has a set of Achievement Level Awards designed to reward children for attaining a
certain performance standard across a range of events. All children automatically compete for
Achievement awards.
The overall aim of this system is to encourage children to take part in all events, and to spread recognition
for achievement over a very large majority of children competing in the Centre.
There are various levels catering for all ability levels.
The five levels are : White
Green
Red
Blue
Gold
The following Tables set out the target times and distances for each age group, colour level and event.
Boys and Girls operate under different Tables.
Certificates are awarded at the end of the season based on the Achievement Level attained.
It is necessary to attain a performance standard in a minimum number of events for a particular level to be
eligible for an award.
For example, U8 Girls are required to reach the standard in a minimum number of 5 events for a particular
colour level, U9 Girls 6 events and so on.
Note : Gold Ribbons are awarded for each event in which a Gold standard is reached.

YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS
TRACK & FIELD RECORDS
AS AT 31ST MARCH 2013
All records are set at our weekly Yarra ranges Athletics competitions
The records shown in italics are those results that are better than our weekly records, and are set at a LAV
sanctioned event (Eg. State Track & Field, Region Track & Field, State Multi Events).
Multi Event Records – the scoring method for this event changed to the “Alberta” system in 2007 / 08. In
general terms this new system gives lower point scores for each event. To calculate whether a new Record
has been set we calculate 1st place in each age group under the old scoring method. Where the old score is
bettered we record this as a Record but we use the Alberta Score. These records are denoted with an (A). Note : The U6,7 & 8 age groups are still using our old / original Centre developed scoring system.

AWARDS & STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
There are a number of Awards in both the Track & Field and Cross Country seasons.
The Centre recognises performances across a wide range of criteria.
Recognition is also given to the hard working parents who have dedicated their time over a long period.
The discretionary Awards are selected by the Executive Committee of the Centre – their decision is final
and no correspondence will be entered into.
The Executive Committee also reserves its right to :-
(a) not give out an award if it feels that there is no athlete meeting the criteria
(b) add in additional awards
A large number of our athletes compete at State Championship events for Relays, Multi Events and Track
& Field. It is a wonderful achievement to qualify for these events and their performances are recognised
under the various categories on the following pages.
TRACK & FIELD
AWARD CRITERIA
The following sets out a summary of our Awards for the upcoming 2013 / 14 season.
AGE GROUP CHAMPIONS
Champion athlete for each age group for Girls & Boys
In summary we have a points system based on an athletes best 3 performances in each event. These best 3
performances are ranked against the performances from other athletes. Points are then awarded as 1st to
3rd places – 6 points, 4th to 6th place – 5 points, 7th to 9th place – 4 points, 10th to 12th place – 3 points,
13th to 15th place – 2 points and 16th to 18th place – 1 point. This calculation is carried out for each event.
1 point is then awarded in every event competed in for the season
Centre records – an extra 5 points (maximum of 5 Centre Records per event). All athletes who meet a
minimum attendance criteria of 50% will be eligible for trophies. All athletes, who meet the attendance
criteria, will receive a trophy
PERSONAL BEST CHAMPIONS
Will be awarded for each age group for Girls & Boys
The winner in each age group will be the athlete with the highest number of PB’s for the season.
Attendance criteria of 50%. There may not be a PB Award for Age Groups with low numbers of athletes
48
ATTENDANCE AWARDS

Athletes are encouraged to compete in all events on the program.
1) An athlete is considered to have attended if he / she competes in at least 3 events of the Program
for the week, unless an injury was incurred during the running of the program. 2) Meetings that count for attendance are: - regular Friday night and Saturday morning meetings.

3) Gold attendance will be given for attending 100% of meetings less 1. A Silver award will be

MULTI EVENTS Multi events are where an athlete competes at a program consisting of 5 events; 100m, Hurdles, Long
Jump, Discus and 800m.
Points are awarded based on the performance in each event. The points tables for each event can be found
on our web site.
The number of points accumulated in each event determines the final result. The athlete with the greater
number of points at the completion of the 5 events is the winner.
Yarra Ranges Athletics holds a Multi Event day. Certificates are awarded to all competing athletes.
STATE MULTI EVENT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The State Multi Championships are open to all athletes (U/9 - U/16). The venue for the State Multi is
always a country Centre. Competition is held over a weekend - Saturday U/9 - U12 and Sunday U/13 -
U/15. Competition begins at 8.30 am each morning.
Traditionally this weekend is a huge “social” weekend for our Centre. We generally “book out” a motel
and have a fantastic family weekend away. A BBQ is organised for the Saturday night and the whole
weekend is a great opportunity to meet the other families at Little Aths and for the kids to play together.
Details about the weekend and entry details to State Multis will be available later in the year.
STATE MULTI EVENT RESULTS Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park
The State Multi Event was held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park in December. Congratulations to our
athletes for their efforts over the weekend.

CROSS COUNTRY Yarra Ranges Athletics has a fantastic Cross Country season. We are one of the few clubs in the Eastern
Region still holding their own weekly events. This year there was a slight drop in the number of athletes,
and it would be great for the club to have more participating
Cross Country competition runs from April to the beginning of August (approx. 16 weeks) and forms part
of our yearly program and registration – insurance is included in your child’s summer season registration.
A small charge ($1 for LAVic registered athletes and $2 for non-registered) per week attended helps to
cover our centres costs.
We run weekly meetings on Saturday mornings commencing at 8.45 am and finishing by 10.30am. We run
at 3 separate locations on a rotating basis. Our opening meeting is at Morrison Reserve, followed by (in no
particular order) Lilydale Lake and Margaret Lewis Reserve at Coldstream (off Ingram Rd).
All athletes have the opportunity to compete at the Regional Championships, and at State Championships
or at Open Days conducted at other Centres. We also compete as a team at the Knox Open Day.
Each week athletes and parents are welcome to compete.
The season concludes with a Presentation day BBQ – to qualify for major awards at least 50% of the
‘home’ meetings must be completed. All are welcome.
Cross Country is fantastic for your fitness (kids and parents alike) and is a perfect compliment to
other winter sports such as footy and netball or to keep your fitness level. We have a large group of
kids and parents that run every week. We are one of the few clubs that encourages parents to have a
run.

Cross Country report 2013 Well another Cross Country season has been run and won and this seasons conditions would be described
as fine and mostly dry so I guess it made PBs a bit more attainable. We ran at each of our venues 4 times
each plus two more special events and two away runs so that works out to be 16 runs for the oldies and a
total of 18 runs for the kids, most of our runners achieved a high number of the possible runs so well done
on your commitment. Our first extra event was the handicap day which was held at Margret Lewis Reserve
for this run we sent the athletes around the course in the opposite way than what they were used to, this
made things a little interesting, also the handicappers were right on target as there were some close margins
on the finish line, the day was very successful. Our next special event was the Championship Day which
saw the first three athletes in their respective groups across the line receive placegetter medals this also was
a fantastic day we even managed to have our very own finish line made by our president Darren Ford. We
had two away runs this season the first was the Knox Open Day at Norton’s Park. We always have fantastic
numbers to this event and this year was just as good but we did get pipped at the post by Croydon LAC
who took out the club Trophy but full credit to all that made the commitment to run the taxing course. The
second away run was The Hills Challenge at Cockatoo this is an event we love to go to, it’s a wonderfully
challenging course and the people are so warm and friendly and this year we just got beaten by Casey and
finished Second in the clubs by 7 points, a great day was had by all.
A handful of our athletes went on to represent the club at Region and State Cross Country, there are too
many to mention so I will say congratulations to all of you for representing us in such fine fashion and
giving your all, and to those who got medals you will remember your achievement for the rest of your life.
So in summary it has been a very competitive season that brought improved performances and also it was a
really fun and energetic time thank you to all the runners for giving all you had.
The Cross Country season takes a fair few people to run it so I would like to thank a number of them now,
firstly to Ged Thrall you are a backbone and a rock you are always reliable and committed and do an
amazing job, words can’t do justice to the contribution you make so not only do I value your input I also
value your friendship, to Conner Thrall never have I seen a young guy so committed to helping others
when there’s nothing in it for him that makes him truly special and we appreciate all he does up early every
week.
To our Recorders led by Veronica Brown and Jackie Dehaan we are so thankful for your efforts your
smiling faces when we come in from a gruelling run make it all worthwhile. To our timers Kim Noonan,
Rob Van Duuren and Ron Veenendaal and to those others who jumped into help when needed thank you so
much. To the Team managers Rob and Kate Van Duuren thank you for keeping the peace and creating a
well organized outfit. To John Townshend for picking up and running with the BBQ idea it was a great
success and very much looked forward to each time. To Jamie Strudley for his enormous contribution to all
areas of the cross country scene this included getting the senior AV team up and running and also his
Tuesday night cross country training runs a massive thank you. To Erika Bedyn for those wonderful photos
she took each week and then spending many hours downloading them onto the website it was all worth it
and thank you so much, also to Phill Russell for his contributing many fine photos and advice thanks Phill .
To Jake Brown and Erika for keeping the website up to date and very informative great job guys.To Darren
Ford our wonderful Leader and President thank you for all you do and your advice. To Rob Belli who is
the heart of Cross Country, without Rob it wouldn’t be the same we love his knowledge and his love for
our club is infectious and long may it live on thank you Rob for giving us this wonderful pastime which
we can all share with our family’s. To everyone else who helped out along the way, to you I say thank you
so much.
I for one have thoroughly enjoyed this season and can’t wait for the new one to begin so I will see you all
in April.
