The Small Business Council guests in Aprilwere City of Manhattan Building Official,Brad Claussen, Manhattan Fire Chief, ScottFrench and Representative Tom Phillips.

Mr. Claussen reported he had visited withseveral small businesses in the past monthto discuss their concerns and learn howthe Codes department can play more of arole as a teammate to business. Their goalis not only to enforce the codes but bepart of the solution. One area the Codesdepartment is working on is consistency ofinspections between the different inspec-tors.

Fire Chief Scott French expressed hisappreciation for the opportunity to visitwith small businesses and learn from them.Mr. French said his goal is to build relation-ships with business owners so they canwork together. The fire department wouldlike to do their part in giving back a senseof ownership to business owners by the

fire department being less intrusive whilekeeping safety at the forefront.

Representative Phillips asked for feedbackfrom business owners as too when theyfeel the state is overly burdensome. Onearea of concern for Representative Phillipsis the repercussions of the state incometax cuts and how shifting the tax burdento local governments and property taxeswill affect small business.

The next Small Business Council meeting isMay 8th at 7:15 am in the Chamberboard room. Greg McHenry, RileyCounty Appraiser will be the guest. Allchamber members are welcome to attend. If you have any questions regarding theSmall Business Council, please contactPatrick Lee at N Zone Sportswear (776-3234 ext. 201 or 341-9177) or TrentArmbrust at the Chamber (776-8829).
