Prospective entrepreneursoften ask where theyshould begin the businessplanning process. Puttingideas, strategies and num-bers down on paper isalways a valuable place tostart. Next, understand theresulting business plan’spurpose and set goals tohelp prioritize the develop-ment process. Care shouldbe taken to determine whythe plan is needed and for

what purpose it’s beingwritten.

To Assist with ObtainingMoney – Always addressthe requirements of theparty bringing outside capi-tal to the table. Banks wantto see an entrepreneurwith skin in the game andthe business’s ability to cashflow. Investors are oftenfocused on the return ontheir investment and theirownership stake in thebusiness.

To Develop Ideas intoBusiness Practices, Productsor Services –Commercialization of anidea, technology or inven-tion is the foundation ofmany successful startups.Understanding customerneeds, markets and compe-tition is a good place tostart.

To Provide a Strategy forGrowth – Whether existingor startup, businesses

should have a plan forfuture growth. Start byassessing strengths, weak-nesses, opportunities andthreats.

To Establish Guidelines forBusiness Operations –Managing resources, includ-ing money and people, iskey to the success of anybusiness. Start with a sim-ple management structurethat includes who doeswhat, job descriptions andresources needed to sup-port operations.

1. Forget the Myth. Embrace the Fact. A common myth is that the Chamber of Commerceis a government agency funded by local government. The fact is that Chamber’s lobby for pro-active business legisla-tion. It’s the best of both worlds because we have influence in both sectors, but are geared toward private sector success.

2. Side–Kick. Don’t stand alone, the Schapiro Group says 59% of consumers think being active in a localChamber is an effective business strategy.

3. Help Build the Business.Starting a new business canbe hard, don’t go it alone. Let the Chamber help you with advice, ideas, and

understanding the community.4. Be Seen. Being a member

gives others online access directly to your website viathe Chamber’s Online Business Directory.

6. Calling All Volunteers.Want to see first-hand how your investment in the Chamber makes a dif-ference for your business and the community? Get involved. Whether you have a passion for Government, Networking, etc. there’s a place for you!

7. Know What We Know.Envision the Chamber as a warehouse full of informa-tion on current business trends and public policies.

8. Gain Favor. When con-sumers are aware a local business is a member of a Chamber 63% are more likely to purchase goods from them.
