Jury Verdict for R. J. Reynolds Working jointly with co-trial counsel, Hughes Hubbard successfully defended a Kent filter wrongful death case for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Hollingsworth & Vose Company on Aug. 15 when a New Jersey Superior Court jury rendered a complete defense verdict for our clients. James Berger led the defense team which included Suzanne Teeven.

Appeal Victory for Portigon Hughes Hubbard prevailed for Portigon AG and one of its employees on Aug. 11 when a New York appeals court upheld the dismissal of an $11 million sexual harassment case in a long-fought legal battle. Ned Bassen and Chris Paparella led the HHR team.

HHR Named Litigation Powerhouse Hughes Hubbard was among an elite group of firms named to Law360’s inaugural list of “Litigation Powerhouses.” The winners “leveraged their deep legal talent to score remarkable wins for their clients over the past year,” according to Law360.

WaMu Settlement Hughes Hubbard represented the FDIC in reaching a settlement with JPMorgan Chase Bank and Deutsche Bank National Trust Company of billions of dollars in claims arising from

the collapse of Washington Mutual Bank (WaMu), the largest bank failure in U.S. history. After a seven-year legal battle involving multiple lawsuits over WaMu’s liabilities, JPMorgan will drop more than $1 billion in claims in exchange for $645 million from the WaMu receivership estate, and Deutsche Bank will drop more than $10 billion in claims in exchange for a $3 billion receivership certificate. Bill Stein and Scott Christensen led the HHR team.

Significant Victory for Sinohydro The World Bank’s Sanctions Board sided with Hughes Hubbard when it ruled that a proposed debarment of its client Sinohydro Corporation Limited, a large Chinese construction and engineering company, was unwarranted. Instead, the Sanctions Board applied its mildest form of sanction, a letter of reprimand, and allowed Sinohydro to resume bidding on World Bank-financed projects. Michael Silverman led the HHR team while Kevin Abikoff led the argument for HHR at the hearing.

Another Win for Crystallex Alex Yanos notched another victory for Crystallex International Corp. on July 20 when an Ontario Superior Court Justice granted its petition to enforce the $1.4 billion ICSID arbitral award the Canadian mining company won in April against Venezuela over an

3Q2016 Developmentsinvestment in the Las Cristinas gold mining project. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer served as co-counsel in the matter.

Securities Fraud Suit Dismissal On July 5, Hughes Hubbard won dismissal of all claims asserted against four former outside directors of Corporate Resource Services Inc.— a diversified technology, staffing, recruiting and consulting services firm — when a NY federal judge dismissed the case with prejudice, based on plaintiffs’ failure to allege sufficient facts to support their claim that the outside directors had acted with scienter. Kevin Abikoff led the team that represented the outside directors along with Nicolas Swerdloff and Benjamin Britz.

‘Double Dipping’ Defeated Again On July 6, a Hughes Hubbard team led by Savvas Foukas proved victorious when a New York federal judge rejected the appeal of two former Lehman traders seeking to collect bonuses — one, for more than $83 million — from the Lehman Brothers Inc. bankruptcy estate after being paid those bonuses by Barclays Capital.

New Trial Affirmed on Appeal On Sept. 7, Hughes Hubbard scored a major victory in a wrongful death products liability suit when a three-

judge panel of Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal upheld an earlier decision to order a new trial because of improper statements by the plaintiff’s attorney during closing arguments. Dave Woods and Will Coronato tried the case for Lorillard. Robb Patryk led the argument on the motion for a new trial.

Victory for L.I. Private School On Sept. 7, Hughes Hubbard scored a victory for its client, a Long Island private school, when an administrative law judge affirmed a U.S. Department of Labor’s initial decision disqualifying the school’s accounts payable clerk from receiving unemployment benefits because she was fired for the unauthorized divulgence of the employer’s business records. Ned Bassen and Margot Warhit represented the client in this matter.

#1 on Am Law’s Pro Bono List Hughes Hubbard earned the top spot on The American Lawyer’s list of Big Law firms for U.S. pro bono commitment. In The American Lawyer’s 2016 pro bono special report, published in July, HHR ranked No. 1 nationally for pro bono efforts among Am Law 200 firms with a 113.3 pro bono score. The firm was also named a “Law 360 Pro Bono Firm of the Year.”
