Literaty Pakistan lyceum
Chapter Handbook
Well I for one was willing to
do anything for a certificate
back in my Lyceum years, let
alone my own box of visiting
cards that I can throw on an
interviewer’s desk and say-
Here’s my card. Yes, you’ll get
your own cards. Nuff said.
Your first job, is to conduct
an orientation for the A1s and
then interview people for your
assistant directors. I give you
complete freedom in terms of
who you want. Get as many
people as you want-As long as
the work is done and you're
not messing up the society
image-you’re good to go.
I bid you all good luck for the
future.
Oh and one more thing- dead-
lines mean deadlines! You
don't ask me what if you miss
one. Cause you won't. Profes-
sionalism needs to be main-
tained.
Patron of Literaty Pakistan
Chapter Lyceum
Hamza Ayub
Salutations and congrats to
the literaty Pakistan council
chapter Lyceum. I'm sorry it
took so long but I was ex-
tremely busy.
I apologize for not being there
to remind you guys what
you're doing and why you're
doing it. Just want you to
know one thing before you
start working. Whatever you
do in the next year or so-you
will all be promoting the same
name and the same logo. Both
promote one key component
of your lives-your country!
You're doing this cause you
want to. You're doing this
cause we need to! It's our job
to tell the world who we are.
It's our job to dig buried piec-
es of our history and promote
the places that aren't generally
seen or talked about. We're
utilizing our time to invest
back in our country what it
gave to us! If you're reading
this-it means that you're
smarter than more than 5.5
billion people out there at
least. Time to show that the
world!
People ask me, should we
focus on embellishing our
college profiles or shall we
spend our time in community
service. I say, is it too much to
ask for both?
You're doing a service to the
country that only people of
your intellect can do. They say
that Literaty is only improving
our image. Think of it this
way-if you manage to tell the
white man(excuse my racist
comments) you're all fun and
games- doesn’t matter what's
really happening here-you've
solved half of your problems
already! Why don't they in-
vest? Why no world cups?
Why is the Pakistani dream
changing the color of our
passports? It's cause we've let
the media paint this image in
not only the white man's head,
but also ours! So how do we
change it?
You use our blog! You use
our magazine! Your own lyce-
um newsletter! Our documen-
tary division. You market this
online.
Why is this going to help
'you' (besides the uplift of
your Pakistani image of
course)? Well how many of
you are really competing for
Nobel prizes, changemaker
awards, thousands of dollars
and spreading your little piec-
es of contribution around the
world? How many of you can
actually write that you have a
"real" job?
How many of you are on a
level of hierarchy where you
have those who work for you?

If you're looking for a place to change
Pakistan's image abroad,
Literaty Pakistan is it! With readership
in the U.S., Canada and
Europe, LP is able to offer those out-
side of Pakistan an authentic
picture of what Pakistan really is and
thereby counter misconceptions
portrayed in the media. More than just
a magazine, LP also invites its
readers around the world to join them
in the movement to engage
Pakistani youth in thinking critically
about their country as well as
commit to serving the people of Paki-
stan. It's been exciting working
with the LP team, and I'm looking
forward meeting and working with
some of you, as well!
Sincerely,
Elisa Dun
Literaty Pakistan
USA Chapter Director
Message from Director USA
Integrated within strategic ties is fund-
raising which primarily looks at youth
products because that is our main
target market. This will be in the fields
of:
Telecom
Ptcl and Wateen
Ufone, Jazba, Djuice,
warid
Courier eg. TCS
Airline
University consultants and Tests
e.g. ILETS and AEO Paki-
stan
Food and Beverages (Coke, Lays,
Lipton etc.)
Banks (HBL, MCB)
MNCs (Engro, Unilever, Nestle
etc)
And Local Philanthropy
Foreign Organizations e.g. British
Council
Marketing requires an able team that is
delegated tasks that are updated and
managed remotely, online. Tasks will
be assigned and leads will have to be
followed up with, this field perhaps
opens the opportunity for much expe-
rience and exposure necessary for any
career. The line between landing a deal
and losing it is very thin hence people
who think on their feet are best suited
for the job.
Asad Ayub
Director Marketing
Co-founder of Literaty Pakistan
Marketing is one of the key tasks that
is expected from the Literaty Pakistan
Lyceum chapter, being the first per-
manent chapter in Karachi Pakistan.
The marketing head will be directly in
contact with the Director Marketing,
LUMS and Director Strategic and
International outreach at UC Berkeley
both of whom are the co-founders of
Literaty Pakistan.
Marketing is expected to be updated
on all the current projects that Literaty
Pakistan prime is under taking. This is
necessary for any meetings and corre-
spondence in Karachi, will primarily
be routed through the Lyceum chap-
ter.
Marketing will look into creating stra-
tegic ties with:
Nationwide book shops eg. Lib-
erty Books
Airlines (as an inflight publica-
tion)
Hotels (as a ‘welcome to pakistan’
souvenir for foreigners)
Bus services (Daewoo e.g.)
Courier services for international
and local partnership

you, it is a very important essential
part of their lives. Respect the people
who are safeguarding the natural beau-
ty of Pakistan and remember they are
the ones who are responsible for
maintaining it once you and your cam-
era have left.
The second rule of thumb is to al-
ways remember what your end goal of
this video is. Your video is not about
YOU, unless of course the subject
itself is you. The end goal of your vid-
eo should never have be how you, the
cameraman, are helping your fellow
man by capturing their issues on your
screen. It should be about THEIR
story- the story of the people, the
land, the culture. Your subject is the
most essential part of your video. It is
their chance to be captured on film. If
you are interested in making videos
about communities that are underpriv-
ileged in any way, remember, you are
not talking for someone else. You are
giving them the space to speak for
themselves, a right they should have
had all along.
A third guideline that you should
always keep in mind is to remember
your privilege. Pakistan, like any other
society, is filled with intersecting privi-
leges. Chances are if you are studying
at elite educational institutions, you are
a privileged member of the communi-
ty. Remember that. And check your
privilege at every stage. Understand
that other people have not the same
opportunities as you. This does not
make them lesser than you. They may
have greater reasons to mistrust the
elite community of Pakistan, the gov-
ernment, Western influences as well as
the camera that you are holding more
than you and I could ever understand.
Respect that. Treat them as your equal
and never exploit the power dynamic
that works in your favour to get a
good scene.
And finally the last rule to remem-
ber is to emphasize the positive rather
than the negative. This does not mean
turning a blind eye to the millions of
things that are going wrong in our
country today. By all means, show
what’s wrong but provide constructive
solutions to show how it can be done
right. And there are examples right
here in Pakistan of how it is done
right. Literaty Pakistan is founded on
the principle of counteracting the neg-
atives images of Pakistan that bom-
bard the mainstream media today.
Hi! I am Maham Kirmani- Director
Documentaries of Literaty Pakistan.
And I am just as excited as you are to
embark on this wonderful journey
creating documentaries that show the
world what Pakistan is really about.
And now, we are being handed a plat-
form to make the people of our coun-
try proud for being a part of such a
rich diverse history and tradition.
However, here a few guidelines for
you to remember before you start
shooting your cameras.
The number one rule that you have
to remember is respect. This may
seem like an easy enough rule but very
often, people are so busy wanting to
show the beauty or the plight of a
subject, they forget to respect the sub-
ject themselves. The first corollary of
this rule is that you should make a
video of a person without their con-
sent. A person has every right to not
want to be in front of a camera and
they do not need to give you a reason
to say no. Similarly, if you happen on a
cultural rite of any kind, the members
of the community are reluctant to
have their ritual shot in film, respect
that. Their culture is not a beautiful
aspect of Pakistan for them as it is to
Message from the Director of Documentary (Lyceum Alumnus Maham Kirmani)
Documentaries are a prime way to get
a very academic and well researched
message to a much larger audience
than any written matter can possibly
reach. A certain degree of maturity
needs to exist in this field with regard
to content matter. An artistic eye is
necessary to make it visually impactful.
The documentary division has the
potential to participate in international
film making competitions that take
place all year round. Working closely
with Maham Kirmani, Director Docu-
mentary LUMS chapter, all in this
department have a chance to learn to
understand, document and raise
awareness about some very important
aspects and issues that our country
faces.
The documentary division will have
three main target areas:.
1. Awareness of a unique cultural
aspect
2. Awareness about the need for
social enterprise
3. Awareness with regard to possible
tourist destinations within
Pakistan
The lack of professional documen-
taries in Pakistan in these three target
areas that form the core of Literaty
Pakistan create a wonderful oppor-
tunity for student documentarians to
rise to the occasion and gain acclaim
nationwide and possibly world over.
The best of the documentaries will
additionally be screened in three cities
Trips and Documentary Description
PAGE 4 LITERATY PAKISTAN LYCEUM CHAPTER HANDBOOK
1. There will be one documentary each
month.
2. Deadline is the first of each month.
3. First documentary is due on the
first of October
4. Quality of the documentary should
be HD
5. Documentary shouldn't be longer
than 5 minutes.
6. The documentaries shall have voice
overs and no actual member of the
team roaming around in them.
7. You are not allowed to feature in
the documentary-we only want the
site, not our team
8. Your facts will need to be checked
by international archaeologist-James
barresford -hence mailed to the LUMS
chapter. [email protected]
9. Each documentary trip shall have at
least one photographer, a writer, a
cameraman and preferably the person
who will edit it.
10. We'll put the logo ourselves on the
documentary.
11. All documentaries shall be sent via
dropbox. Install that on your pcs.
12. The trips/documentary directors
need to coordinate the efforts rather
than do the work themselves. Hire
students who are good at these jobs!
13. We prefer slr and dslr cameras for
footage. But that's not a compulsion.
14. No photos in the documentaries.
Just footage.
15. You can put your names in the
credits.
16. Quality must be exceptional! Else
we'll use your footage and make it
ourselves. Your footage will be a
good enough contribution.
17. Deadlines for documentaries:
1st october, 1st november, 1st Febru-
ary, first march.
(Just 4)
18. The department must go to the
LAC trips and document them!
Important points to remember for the documentary division
being unique is simply half a victory,
the other half is in making sure that all
our products are visually dynamic and
of international standards which will
make sure that the message reaches
out to a much wider target audience. This depart-
ment will work
closely with the
mini-
publication that
the publication
department
makes, along
with giving
support to the
IT division and
lending a hand to the documentary
division if need be. Over all this is a
support division without which the
rest of the departments will not be
able to function optimally. We here at
Literaty Pakistan believe that content
“CONTENT BEING
UNIQUE IS
SIMPLY HALF A
VICTORY…”

having any political motives or
affiliations. Thus references to any
political party, negative or other-
wise, shall not be made anywhere
in the publication. We do not want
any of the publications to be asso-
ciated with any agenda being pur-
sued by any political party or
movement.
2. Literaty content must deal with as-
pects of culture, art, history, cul-
tural criticism (this may deal with
current affairs but no political
party may be mentioned or allud-
ed to) or social enterprise. Pieces
pertaining to science and technol-
ogy in Pakistan are also welcome
and can be published.
It is quite evident that the
Literaty magazine and
newsletter is distinguished
by its content and style
which must adhere to some
basic rules so as to ensure
that these publications stay
true to the basic mission
and idea behind the whole
initiative. It must be clear in
all our minds what can and
cannot go into the publica-
tions so that the thrust of
the initiative is in one uni-
fied direction. Listed below
are some guidelines for the
purpose of choosing con-
tent.
1. Literaty is complete-
ly apolitical i.e not
3. Literaty content must not have in
it pieces on fashion, popular
music, tv shows or popular
cinema. Gossip, slandering and
personality defamation are to
be especially avoided.
4. There must be an emphasis on
dealing with items that popular
media in Pakistan does not
deal with. Little bits of what
Pakistan is all about are being
forgotten and relegated to the
sands of time. It is up to us to
bring them back into the open.
Thus be sure to add pieces on
folk culture and practice or
something amazing about Pa-
kistan that most are not aware
about.
GUIDELINES FOR ADMINISTERING AND PRODUCING
CONTENT IN PUBLICATIONS OF LITERATY PAKISTAN
PAGE 6 LITERATY PAKISTAN LYCEUM CHAPTER HANDBOOK
5. This is NOT a campus
newspaper. Thus lei-
sure events happening
on campus must be
kept out of the publica-
tion.
6. There must not be publi-
cizing of any corpora-
tion unless it is a social
enterprise or has a so-
cial responsibility mes-
sage we want to share.
7. It also falls up to you to
understand what we
aim to achieve with
this initiative and thus
use your best judge-
ment to discern what
should and should not
be published.
GUIDELINES FOR ADMINISTERING AND PRODUCING CONTENT IN
PUBLICATIONS OF LITERATY PAKISTAN continued
Message from an alumnus and our current representative in Mt Holyoke
During my first year at college in
USA, I was struck by the sheer pity
directed towards me because I was
from Pakistan, a state deeply in-
fused with terrorism and religious
extremism. Honestly, I do not regret
having spent 18 years of my life in
Pakistan for I know that contrary to
the depictions on our grim media,
there is more to Pakistan than just
intolerance and injustice. We are,
indeed, a nation with a diverse cul-
ture and cuisine, and our country
has absolutely no shortage of scenic
beauty. In choosing to relegate Pa-
kistan's art, history and aura in favor
of exotic foreign goods, we are ef-
fectively destroying our own unique
identity. Like it or not, it is a costly
mistake that our naive society has
collectively made. Well, I'm now
desperate to refurbish Pakistan's
distorted international image and
hence, I wholeheartedly support
Literaty Pakistan. I hope you will
too!
