This time, let’s take a look at the work of a painter who also- like R. L. Stevenson- moved to a

Polynesian island.

Painting and Literature

His name is : Paul Gauguin

Biographical note Paul Gauguin was born in Paris, (7 June 1848 – 8 May 1903) France to

journalist Clovis Gauguin and half-Peruvian Aline Maria Chazal, the daughter of proto-socialist leader Flora Tristan.

In 1851 the family left Paris for Peru, motivated by the political climate of the period. Clovis died on the voyage, leaving three-year old Paul, his mother and his sister to fend for themselves.

They lived for four years in Lima, Peru with Paul's uncle and his family. The imagery of Peru would later influence Paul in his art.

Biographical note

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist who was not well appreciated until after his death.

Gauguin was later recognized for his experimental use of colors and synthetist style that were distinguishably different from Impressionism.

His work was influential to the French avant-garde and many modern artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

In Tahiti –French Polynesia

In 1891, Gauguin sailed to French Polynesia to escape European civilization and "everything that is artificial and conventional". He wrote a book titled Noa Noa describing his experiences in Tahiti.

There have been allegations by modern critics that the contents of the book were fantasized and plagiarized
