• Is a genre of fiction• Involves elements of science – the stories

always involve both partially true and partially fictitious laws or theories of science

• Is almost always set in the future

• Is never completely believable. (If the plot, characters, and setting were completely believable, the genre would be easily confused with fantasy.)
