Literacy on the MoveFunded by a 2009 TRC

Grant

Presented by Tina Conklin, ELA Teacher and Literacy Coach, Chenango Valley Middle School

Project Description

Using mini computers and a printer to create a Writing Lab would improve student writing by providing time and place to write, guidance while writing, and middle school student “ownership” of their work. Through my work as a Literacy Coach, I can set up opportunities for students to use the Writing Lab to improve their literacy skills as well as achievement across curricular areas.

Activities• Set up a Writing Lab (by assignment or

voluntarily)

• Used to motivate and assist in AIS classrooms

• Use across the curriculum to help students create written work

• “Stations” work

• Collaborative Projects

The Equipment

Acer Aspire One AOD250-1165 10.1" Netbook PC

Linksys (WRT54G2) Wireless-G Broadband Router Canon PIXMA iP3600 Inkjet Photo Printer

Results

From November of 2009 to April of 2010 the Mini Lab was used by students over 40 times.

In addition, they were used for assignments in AIS, English, Literacy Class, and Social Studies, as well as by students with special writing needs

We were, unfortunately, unable to make them as mobile as we wanted, due to the need to use a safe.
