Total Physical Response Vocabulary Practice
• The set of pages with images are the TPR (Total Physical Response) picture pages. They
are available with or without words and in color or grayscale.
• You can use any of these pages with a document camera or create an overhead
transparency of the TPR picture page OR you can project the TPR slide from the
greetings with practice ppt file.
• The TPR practice should be used in conjunction with the vocabulary with practice
presentation PowerPoint or after all of the vocabulary has been presented using the
vocabulary presentation ppt(no practice).
• The pictures on the TPR page correspond to the little pictures that appear next to each
phrase in the vocabulary presentation PowerPoint.
How to use TPR (if you aren’t already familiar with the strategy)
• Students should have the complete TPR picture at their desks.
• Say each phrase in Spanish as you point to the picture, students are just listening. Do not
do more than 7 word chunks at a time.
• Then go through the words again and have students repeat each phrase after you.
• Say a phrase and have students point to the pictures that they have at their desks as you
say them. Repeat each word several times pointing to the picture after you have said
the phrase. Check for student comprehension.
• Point to each picture and ask ¿Qué es? Or ¿Cómo se dice en español?, students should
respond with the correct phrase.
• It is important that you do this process in small chunks of words (no more than 7 at a
time). I would not attempt to do the entire list.
Teacher Tips
• TPR helps students stay focused on learning the vocabulary. It also helps teachers know
when their students are “getting it”.
• As students are pointing, check for comprehension.
• Ask students not to write Spanish words on the TPR page. We want them to associate an image/memory with a Word/phrase (as we did when we learned our first language).
• Print the vocabulary fill in sheet and the TPR page front to back to save paper.
• Use TPR to practice the vocabulary at any time.
