PRESENTATION TOPIC:
IMPROVING LISTENING SKILLS
One can become a good listener by developing a desire to listen.
It can be done by adopting a positive attitude for the speaker and his/her subject.
The verbal and non verbal behaviour of listener will suggest the speaker that he is being properly heard and understood.
A good listener simply paraphrase what the speaker said and enquire from the speaker whether he/she heard it accurately.
Some commonly used phrase are:
1. “So u mean to say that…..”
2. “As I gather, you want to tell…..”
3. “Do u mean that…..”
To reflect implications listener have to go beyond the contents of speaker indicating him the appreciation for his ideas and where the are leading.
Good listener try to empathize or identify himself with the speaker, to experience what he/she feels.
A good listener always prompt the speaker to give more information if he/she haven’t heard or understood enough.
1. “Can you through more light on…..”
2. “It would be great if you expand more on this”
Postures and non-verbal signals like eye contact, body leaning slightly towards listener, head nods, etc are signs of a good listener.
Occasional use of some receptive utterances
as “yes”, “un-hum”, indicates interest.
Suitable expression with natural smile.
Open postures and open palms.
Appropriate distance.
Do not pretend to show interest.
LACK OF PROPER LISTENING CAN LEAD TO EMBARRASING
SITUATIONS BECAUSE OF A GAP IN COORDINATION AND
UNDERSTANDING
