A comprehensive workshop on bull selection for cattle producers in the South Central Texas area is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22 at 44 Farms in Cameron. “A bull is responsible for 50 percent of the herd’s calf crop, and a good bull is an investment that certainly can pay dividends,” Cleere said. “The workshop will discuss applied as well as advanced bull selection techniques. Live animals will be used to teach attendees visual selection,” Banta said. Other topics to be discussed include cattle breeds and breeding programs; individual performance data, expected progeny differences and genetic markers; bull fertility and bull-to-cow ratios; and bull management before and after the breeding season.
Cost is $60 per person prior to April 8. Cost is $75 after. There is a money-back guarantee, and registration covers lunch and program materials. To register online, go to https://agriliferegister.tamu.edu or call AgriLife Extension Conference Services at 979-845-2604. For more information, call 903-834-6194. Tax Free Weekend for Emergency Preparation Supplies – April 23 – 25, 2016 You can purchase certain emergency preparation supplies tax free during the 2016 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase, and you do not need to issue an exemption certificate to claim the exemption. This year’s holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 25. These emergency preparation supplies qualify for tax exemption if purchased for a price: Less than $3000 - Portable generators
Less than $300 - Hurricane shutters, Emergency ladders
Less than $75 - Batteries, single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt or 9 volt), First aid kits, Fuel containers, Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits, Hatchets, Axes, Mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers, Nonelectric coolers and ice chests for food storage, Nonelectric can openers, Portable self-powered light sources (hand cranked flashlights), Portable self-powered radios, including two-way and weather band radios, Reusable and artificial ice products, Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors, Tarps and other plastic sheeting
These supplies do not qualify for tax exemption: Batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles, Camping stoves, Camping supplies, Chainsaws, Plywood, Extension ladders, Stepladders, Tents, Repair or replacement parts for emergency preparation supplies, Services performed on, or related to, emergency preparation supplies
Additional Charges Affect Purchase Price Delivery, shipping, handling and transportation charges are part of the sales price. If the emergency preparation supply being purchased is taxable, the delivery charge is also taxable. Consider these charges when determining whether an emergency preparation supply can be purchased tax free during the holiday. For example, you purchase a rescue ladder for $299 with a $10 delivery charge, for a total sales price of $309. Because the total sales price of the ladder is more than $300, tax is due on the $309 sales price.

Report Livestock Losses with Farm Service Agency – Bellville – (979) 865-3138 The Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) provides assistance to eligible producers for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather and attacks by animals reintroduced into the wild by the federal government or protected by federal law. LIP compensates livestock owners and contract growers for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather, including losses due to hurricanes, floods, blizzards, wildfires, extreme heat or extreme cold.
For 2016, eligible losses must occur on or after Jan. 1, 2016, and before December 31, 2016. A notice of loss must be filed with FSA within 30 days of when the loss of livestock is apparent. Participants must provide the following supporting documentation to their local FSA office no later than 30 calendar days after the end of the calendar year for which benefits are requested: • Proof of death documentation • Copy of growers contracts • Proof of normal mortality documentation
USDA has established normal mortality rates for each type and weight range of eligible livestock, i.e. Adult Beef Cow = 1.5% and Non-Adult Beef Cattle (less than 400 pounds) = 3%. These established percentages reflect losses that are considered expected or typical under “normal” conditions. Producers who suffer livestock losses in 2016 must file both of the following: • A notice of loss the earlier of 30 calendar days of when the loss was apparent or by January 30, 2017 • An application for payment by January 30, 2017.
Additional Information about LIP is available at your local FSA office (979) 865-3138 or online at: www.fsa.usda.gov.

This innovative program assists new landowners in understanding the concepts of rural living. Participants in the program are given exposure to ideas on raising livestock and horses, plant identification, fence building, applying pesticides, soil testing, stock pond management, pond construction, fruit and nut production, rain water harvesting, turf management, and much more. The program also serves as a way for new residents of the four counties to network and meet new people in their communities, find out what can be done on their land, what operations can be profitable, and possibly what opportunities they have to serve the community.
The program will be held on the third Friday of the months of January through May and August through November. Each month’s meeting will be held at different locations in one of the four counties. The meetings begin at 1:30 pm and will last between 4 and 5 hours depending on the topic and possible tour stops. The Texas Beef Council (TBC) and Texas A&M AgriLife
Extension Service have teamed up to present a special Beef 706
program, a three-part series of hands-on sessions focusing on
beef quality management and marketing opportunities. This
program is available to beef cattle producers from Austin,
Brazos, Burleson, Fayette, Lee, Waller, and Washington
counties.
The checkoff-funded program is designed to help producers
maximize profits and have a better understanding of the
production process after their cattle enter the feedyard.
Session one will be held January 19, 2016 at Cattlemen’s
Livestock Auction Center in Brenham, TX. Here industry
experts will discuss factors effecting feeder calves. Producers
will then choose a calf to monitor through the production
system at the following two sessions.
Session two will be held May 17, 2016 at the Texas A&M Beef
Cattle Research Farm in College Station, TX. During this
session producers will get an inside look into the feeding
industry and see the progress of their feeder calf chosen in the
first session. Producers will also learn more about factors
impacting feedyard performance.
Session three will be held June 6-7, 2016 at the meats lab at
Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. This two-day
session will allow producers to see their finished cattle and
participate in a hands-on exercise that takes their chosen fed
cattle from session one through the harvest, grading and
fabrication process. In the final session, industry experts will
discuss the cattle’s value highlighting the advantages and
disadvantages of marketing cattle on a grid versus a live basis.
Beef Quality Assurance Credits will be offered over the course
of the program to all interested participants. The cost of the
program will be $50.00/participant and can be paid at the
first session on January 19th.
To RSVP and Register for this program, please contact your
local County Extension Office.
