2efore the formal creation of its Multiverse, DC would use the "imaginary story" label to denote stories that did not fitand were never intended to fit into its canona tradition it would continue even after the creation of the Multiverse.

+lan Moore3s "4hat Ever happened to the Man of Tomorrow5" % Action Comics vol. & (67 and Superman vol. &

(-)' in &*7 was the last pre#Crisis story to use the label.

2y contrast, other stories were clearly intended to be canonical, but various details were wrong or there were storiestold in other media that were never said not to be canonical. +s a result, fans and editors would create other Earthsto eplain things li8e the Super Friends comic %set on what fans referred to as Earth-1A'. +lso there were many "oneshot" Earths %such as the reality shown in "1uperman, 9ou3re Dead, Dead, Dead" in Action Comics vol. & (**',which were never named and for which few details were provided.

+fter the first Crisis, several new universes appeared despite DC3s intentions to the contrary. These included paralleuniverses in the Darstars and Justice League series. :n addition, DC ran a number of crossovers with othercompanies that involved travel between different realities. Technically, none of these worlds were ever part of theMultiverse.

This was until the Infinite Crisis mini#series retroactively labeled the !angent Comics universe and many Elseworlds

as Earths of the Multiverse, even though they had been published long after the Multiverse was destroyed. InfiniteCrisis did the same with many pre#Crisis Imaginar" !a#es.

:n the "4ith + ;engeance$" storyline in Superman$%atman, the Multiverse is visited by 2i<arro and 2at<arro. The=o8er and Mr. My<ptl8 summon 2atmen and 1upermen from various realities, both previously established worldsas well as uneplored ones.>?@

 Deluxe Edition 7#G BKH-2524H42

The ultiversity  is a limited series of interrelated one#shots set in the DC Multiverse in The Bew 6), a collection ofuniverses seen in publications by DC Comics. The one#shots in the series were written by rant Morrison, each witha different artist. !he *u#ti+ersit"  began in +ugust )0&- and ran until +pril )0&6.

Background and creation:n the conclusion to the &*76 comic boo8 crossover , "Crisis on :nfinite Earths", the DC Multiverse collapsed with thehistory of five universes being merged into one single new universe. :n the &**7N&*** series, !he )ingdom, authorMar8 4aid introduced the concept of  /ypertime, co#created by rant Morrison, a super#dimensional construct thatallowed for all publications to be canon or in#continuity somewhere. /ypertime, although infreFuently used, was areplacement and eplanation for the multiple timelines and histories DC had published through the years. >&@

:n the )006N0 crossover, ":nfinite Crisis", the survivors of the first Crisis +leander uthor, =r. from Earth#Three,1uperboy#Grime from Earth#Grime, and al# of Earth#Two had attempted to create a perfect world to replace thecurrent DC Aniverse %DCA', with uthor restoring, merging, and destroying worlds that had once eisted inMultiverse or were featured in Elseworlds publications. uthor failed due to the intervention of the universe3s heroesand inadvertently altered the history of the DC Aniverse. Grior to the publication of Infinite Crisis, editor Dan DiDio revealed that /ypertime no longer eists in the DCA.>)@

!ollowing ":nfinite Crisis", the year#long wee8ly mai#series 52  %)00N)00?' led to the revelation that Multiverse stilleists, in the form of 6) alternate universes. +uthor rant Morrison stated that the return of the Multiverse wasintended to launch new franchises, eplainingL

The parallel Earths you see in issue (6) are not the familiar pre#Crisis versions. :f you thin8 you recogni<e and 8nowany of these worlds from before, you3d be wrong. 4e all wanted to do something new with the multiple Earths sowhat you3ve already seen in 6) is simply the tip of the iceberg N each parallel world now has its own huge newbac8story and characters and each could basically form the foundation for a complete line of new boo8s. :f you li8ethe ongoing soap opera dynamics of Bew Earth, you can watch Mary Marvel turning to the dar8 side as her s8irtgets shorter and shorter, or you can buy the Earth 6 line of boo8s featuring more iconic versions of the Marvel!amily. :f you miss ;ic 1age as the uestion, you should be able to follow the adventures of ;ic3s counterpart on theCharltonP4atchmen world of Earth -.

The idea behind the Megaverse is to basically create a number of big new franchise possibilities. :t3s li8e havingseveral comics companies and universes under one umbrella, so, as : say, there could be one boo8 or a whole lineof boo8s spinning out of the new Earth &0 %: handled that particular revamp, so : can tell you that the originalconcept of the !reedom !ighters on a world where the Ba<is won 4orld 4ar ) has been greatly reconsidered, epanded and intensified into something that3s a bit more 4agnerian and apocalyptic and a bit more adult' That3show :3d li8e to see the Megaverse played out as we move forward. +nd no crossovers$ Each of the parallel universesshould eist in its own separate stream with no contact from the others N not until we have a story worthy of bringingthem together.>@

:n )00?N07, as a follow up to 52 , and lead#in to DC3s net line#wide crossover "!inal Crisis", another wee8ly seriesbegan publication, Countdown %later retitled Countdown to Fina# Crisis' and various spin#off titles featured the newMultiverse. The Multiverse plays a large part in the Fina# Crisis %)007N)00*' series, where a team of 1upermen fromacross the Multiverse assemble to defeat a rogue Monitor , Mandra88. The series introduced a new 1uperman from

Earth#), Calvin Ellis, who is the Gresident of the Anited 1tates. rant Morrison based the character on 2arac8Obama.>-@ The character would later appear in rant Morrison3s Action Comics (* %=uly )0&)' and was a centralcharacter in !he *u#ti+ersit" . "!inal Crisis" was described by editor Dan DiDio as the finale in a trilogy of storiesabout the Multiverse, describing each CrisisL "The death of the Multiverse, the rebirth of the Multiverse, and now theultimate story of the multiverse.">6@

4hen as8ed about his future role in epanding the Multiverse following "!inal Crisis", Morrison statedL ":3m in theearly stages of putting together material for a Multiverse series but : want to spend a lot of time getting it eactlyright, so there are currently no deadlines and : don3t anticipate any of this coming out until )0&0." >@ Morrison laterrevealed that he had been wor8ing on a new boo8 set on Earth#-, featuring Charlton Comics characters, butinspired by +lan Moore and Dave ibbons3s &*7 limited series .atchmen, which in turn was proposed initially asbeing based on Charlton Comics characters. >?@

:n .i3ard  ()&) %+pril )00*', Morrison detailed his proQect, !he *u#ti+ersit" , intended for publication in )0&0.Morrison states that the seriesL "will pic8 up a bunch of strands from 52  and Fina# Crisis." /e noted that his wor8would include a one#shot for each of seven different universes, where theyL "all lin8 together as a seven#issue storythat re#imagines the relationship between the DCA and the Multiverse.">7@>*@

Morrison provided =effrey Ienaud of  Comic 2oo8 Iesources with further details, eplaining the reasoning behindthe proQectL "The idea was to do seven boo8s that would be (& issues for seven different teams on seven differentEarths. Each of these would be the bible for what could potentially be an entire comic line for each of these Earths."Originally, his co#writers %eoff =ohns, Mar8 4aid, and reg Iuc8a' on 52  would have had a hand in the proQect.>&0@

4e were all N that3s me and reg >Iuc8a@ and eoff =ohns and Mar8 4aid N going to each do a Multiverse boo8. 4aid was going to do the 1ha<am world. +ndreg was going to do the Earth#-, the 8ind of Charlton world, and : thin8 eoff was going to do Earth#) and : was going to do Earth#&0. +t the end, it didn3t wor8out but : really li8ed the idea so : came bac8 to it and built this story over it.
