Aspirations Study For Year 8 and Year 10 Students Lismore High School is taking part in an Aspirations Study in conjunction with The University of Newcastle and The Department of Education and Communities. This Study runs across four years and allows the research team to an-alyse data on career aspirations of students as they pro-gress through school. Students in Year 8 and Year 10 will be completing a short survey during class time early in Term 3. Attached to the Newsletter you will find a Standing Consent form for each parent to sign and return to school. This form gives consent which includes your approval for your son or daughter to take part in the Aspirations Study. If you could, please spare a few minutes to fill out and sign the form and return with your child to school. Glenn Jeffery Aspirations Research Liaison Officer

The front garden is looking great thanks to the hard work of Kellie McBeath, Brad O‟Reilly, Glenn Jeffery, Robyn Wal-lace, Justine Jacob, Daniela Elford and students of Lismore High. The garden beds are being planted out this week. Mr McInerney‟s snow peas are delicious and his tomotoes were a hit. Thank you for all your hard work.

Chemistry Year 12 Excursion to Rous Water The Year 12 Chemistry class went to the water treat-ment plant to see chemistry used on an industrial scale. They saw how the water we drink is cleaned and disin-fected. After recess, in between rain showers, we saw the catchment where the rain water is collected. On the way home we stopped in at the water laboratories to see the checks made on the water to ensure it is safe. Despite the rain we had a lot of fun, and learned a little chemistry along the way. Science and Engineering Challenge It’s Fundraising Time On the 5th June, 30 students from Lismore High School(25 Year 10 students and five Year 9 students) competed in the Science and Engineering Challenge held at South-ern Cross University. The event was run over two days with a total of 16 schools competing. The winners of each day left with a wheel bur-row filled with $1000 worth of science equipment. Lismore High were the winners on the first day and Woodlawn Col-lege were the winners on the second day. Points were awarded for each activity (12 activities in total) and the school with the most points over the two days, and therefore the overall winners of the regional event was Lis-more High School. Lismore High now has the opportunity to compete at the Super Challenge (State titles) held in Townsville on the 12th of September. Well done guys the school community is very proud of you, now let‟s get Fundraising. Scott Allen Science Teacher

Sponsors Needed As reported above our Year 10 team won the Northern Rivers Challenge. This gave us entry to the State Chal-lenge in Townsville, Queensland and a Wild Card entry to the National Championships at Southern Cross University, Lismore. Unfortunately we have to compete in the Towns-ville competition to be eligible for the Nationals. In the last five years since the Science and Engineering Challenge commenced, Lismore High has achieved at very high levels and placed either first or second in the Northern Rivers competitions. We have also been successful at State levels on a number of occasions. The wild card entry to the Nationals is a big bonus and it would be great for our Lismore High students to attend. If you or your business is able to sponsor our students in any way it would be greatly appreciated and your involve-ment would be acknowledged through our school network. Thankyou Graham Wallace Head Teacher Science

Calves in School As part of the Cows make Careers Program we have been lucky enough to have two calves in school for four weeks. We have been looking after them, feeding milk twice a day, giving them hay and grain to eat as well. Whilst they were here we measured their growth rate by using a tape meas-ure around their belly. We found they had put on 3 cms! They were very cute and loved being patted, but we could-n‟t agree on their names. It was sad when they went as they were getting used to us and starting to grow fast. Numeracy — Study Tips

Your child will be learning to solve number problems using

efficient mental and written methods at school. Help this pro-

cess at home by discussing the method you used to work out

a number problem, so that your child can see how you ap-

proached it. Just giving the answers won't help in the long run.

Science and Maths Exposed On Thursday 30th May, Lismore High School hosted 450 Year 6, 7 and 8 students from 9 local High Schools, includ-ing schools from as far away as Tweed River High and Evans Head High. These numbers included all Lismore High Year 7 and 8 students. The Mathematics interactive, hands on activity was pre-sented in the morning session by Associate Professor Car-mel Coady from the University of Western Sydney. In this session students were engaged in building spaghetti bridg-es and finding mathematical relationships between their handspan and height and other activities. In the afternoon the 450 Year 6, 7 and 8 students were involved in the science interactive program “Fact or Fic-tion”. The program is presented by Rod Dowler, Education Team Leader from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation(ANSTO) from Sydney. During the 90 minute interactive show, students view popular sci-fi movie clips and look at the technology in the movies in-cluding cryogenics, teleportation, light sabres, telekinesis and others. The student audience then voted if they be-lieve it to be fact or fiction! A repeat of the “Fact or Fiction” interactive was held in the Lismore High School Hall in the evening for members of the wider community. It was also well attended and en-joyed by the audience.

Year 12 Polymer Chemistry Lecture On Friday 31st May, Associate Professor Gary Dennis from the University of Western Sydney presented a Pol-ymer workshop to Lismore High School Chemistry stu-dents and 40 students from other local high schools. The Polymer workshop links directly to the students Production of Materials unit in the HSC Chemistry Sylla-bus. Students were given expert knowledge on this im-portant unit of work through PowerPoint presentations and practical demonstrations. A second session was held in the afternoon for Maths students by Associate Professor Carmel Coady from the University of Western Sydney. During this session the 40 plus students were engaged in a variety of enrich-ment activities to assist with their Maths courses. Graham Wallace Head Teacher Science

Lismore High School North Coast Sports Representatives 2013 Lismore High School students continue to display talent in the sporting arena, with ten students this year being select-ed on North Coast teams. Many students from Port Mac-quarie through to Tweed Heads trial for selection in a range of sports to make up these teams.

Tim Jeffery (Year 12) has repre-sented the school in Basketball since Year 7. He was selected in the North Coast side and traveled to Maitland in April. His team played six games over three days and were placed eighth overall. Lismore High appreciates the sportsmanship that Tim has displayed over the past six years and his willingness to help out with umpiring and coach-ing.

Leroy Duroux (Year 12) and Tim Jeffery (Year 12) were selected in the North Coast Volleyball team in March. The boys traveled to Minto, coming eighth overall. Both Tim and Leroy were valuable team members displaying a great deal of skill on the Volleyball court. Leroy will also be leaving Lismore High at the end of 2013. He has been an integral part of many sporting teams and he has always shown a great deal of skill and talent.

Joel Wilson (Year 12) has been a member of the North Coast Football team for the past two years. He was co-Captain of the team, when they recently played in Armidale. Joel displayed a great deal of energy and skill throughout the six games played, and the North Coast team placed eighth overall. This is Joel‟s final year in representative sport for Lismore High and we appreciate his efforts in sport over the past six years.

Sam Brown (Year 11) gained selection in the North Coast Hockey team in April. His team traveled to Sydney, where they played five games over three days. North Coast placed sixth overall. Sam has represented Lismore High in Hockey since Year 7 and shows a great deal of passion and energy for his sport.

Katie Burke (Year 7) was selected in the North Coast team after a strong performance in the pool at the Northern Rivers Zone Swimming Carnival. She competed in three Multi-Disability events and was placed 13th in the 50m Freestyle and ninth in 100m Freestyle.

Caitlin Hammond (Year 10), Chloe Jeffery (Year 10) and Kailyn Morris (Year 10) and were members of the North Coast Basketball team, which competed in Terrigal in early May. The girls played five games throughout the competi-tion and North Coast placed tenth overall. All three girls have been members of the Lismore High School Basketball team since Year 7 and display a great deal of flair in their sport. Taholo Renagi (Year 11) and Darcy Ramsay (Year 11) were initially selected in the North Coast Rugby League Northern Division side in April. After a very competitive se-lection process they were then chosen in the North Coast team, which played in Bellingen in early May. The team played a very competitive Hunter side and were defeated 22-20. Taholo showed leadership in directing the play in the forwards and Darcy worked tirelessly in attack, out on the wing. Both students have represented the school in a num-ber of sports this year and show strong leadership skills and talent in the game of Rugby League. Thank you to all the families who have supported Lismore High School Representatives. Penny Graham CHS Sports Co ordinator

Farewell To Our International Girls

As we move toward the end of Term 2 2013, we are get-ting closer to the time when our three lovely international students, Emelie Hansen, Angela Voegeli and Alison Winandy, must leave us and return home. In fact, Emelie has already left our shores and returned to her homeland of Sweden. Angela will leave us at the end of the term to return to Switzerland and Alison will return at the same time to France. It has been a great pleasure and honour to have the girls at our school for a large part of 2012 and 2013. They have been active members of the year group and have added richness and vitality to the group as a whole. I will certainly miss their smiles, goodwill and their humour and commend the girls for their wonderful conduct and excellent participa-tion in all activities connected with the school and outside activities which Lismore High School participates in. I would also like to thank and congratulate their host fami-lies for how well the girls have adapted themselves to Lis-more High School community. Their care and support of the girls has made the time spent away from home all that much smoother. I‟m sure I am speaking for Year 12 in general when I say that the memories of the girls‟ time at Lismore High School leaves us all with many happy memo-ries and the possibility of continued friendships in the fu-ture. Julia Dignan Year Advisor

The following is a transcript of the speech Emelie and Ange-la delivered to the school at an assembly. Hey Guys! Some of you, primarily Year 12, know who we are and for those who do not know us, here is an introduction: Hi, I‟m Emelie and I‟m from Sweden. Hi, I‟m Angela and I‟m from Switzerland. (For those who are confused, it‟s not the same country.) For the past nine months we have been enrolled as ex-change students at Lismore High. These amazing months are unfortunately now coming to an end. Em leaves this Sunday and Angela leaves in nearly a month. As we came with the same organisation we decided to have our „thank you speech‟ together whilst we both are still present. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Kitching and Mr Brito, as well as our previous principals Mr Solomon and Ms Grieves, for their patience with us and their constant support. We also want to thank the office ladies for dealing with us at all times, for always being there to listen and al-ways offering a helping hand. We would also like to thank the teachers at LHS, especially our class teachers for an-swering our sometimes extremely stupid questions and for making sense of our English grammar and language barri-ers when no one else could. Also we want to thank all the students, especially Year 12, for all the memories, friend-ships created and all the laughs that we have shared. You all should be very proud of yourselves; you are a great group of people. The biggest thank you goes to our host sisters Hannah Sky, Samantha Carter and Joanne Budd for everything you and your families have done for us. Without you our year would not have been the same. We have something we would like to present to the school, as a thank you gift to show how much we appreciate every little thing you have done for us. We will miss you Lismore High.

CHS Knockout Tennis Competition

On Wednesday June 5th, the Open Boys Tennis Team, consisting of Cory Edmonstone, Blake Lancaster, Tali

Hooper and Josh Eckersley travelled to Kyogle to play

Round 4 in the CHS Knockout Tennis Competition. The Kyogle Team had beaten our adversaries, McLean High

School, who eliminated us last year in the third round. But on Wednesday the four boys fought valiantly

against a marginally superior team, going down narrow-

ly to Kyogle, 6-2.

In future years, any students who would like to repre-sent LHS in Tennis should register their interest at the

earliest opportunity with Mr Withers.

Open Girls Basketball Last week the Open Girls Basketball team embarked on an eight hour car trip to Terrigal on the Central Coast to play Terrigal High School in the Combined High Schools Girls Basketball knockout. The venue was Scholastic Stadium in Terrigal, and our girls turned up to a cold stadium ready to play. After a great warm up the game got underway and Lismore High started well, but during the first half the height advantage that the Terrigal team had, proved to be the difference. We had many great attacking opportunities but our shots seemed to rim out and once again possession would go to Terrigal. The girls spent much of the half defending, which they did a superb job of. By half time Terrigal had a 16 point lead but the Lismore girls were upbeat and still confident of their ability to win. Unfortunately the gap at half time was just too hard to claw back but the girls did outplay Terrigal in the final quarter, which was fantastic! Terrigal had too much height and had some excellent players which in the end proved the differ-ence. All of the girls played strongly but the final score was 47 -25 in favour of Terrigal High. The Lismore High girls played the game in the right spirit, encouraged each other, never gave up and did our school proud. It has been my pleasure to be associated with the girls and I look forward to continuing the association with the team in the future. A big thanks goes to Ms McLean who travelled with and helped organise the girls and to Monica Hammond who drove to Terrigal, provided excellent directions to every-where, and did our bench duty at the game. Without these two ladies the girls would not have been able to play this game. The team was: Amelia Lister, Caitlin Duroux, Hannah Sky, Chloe Jeffery, Caitlin Hammond, Olivia Wood, Kailyn Mor-ris, Tahlecia Gallagher and Mullaya Murphy
